That's what Bootsy and Catfish brought to P-Funk. When those guys joined George, that's when P-Funk started sounding that way, with the 9th chords. (Let's Take It To The Stage is a great example)
Eric. James Brown was a rhythmic genius, I don't care what anybody says. He's unpredictable, his rhythm style is unpredictable like Miles Davis is to jazz. That's because he doesn't want you predicting what he's gonna do. James Brown can ride on one chord, or tone, and it's like the bass player and drummer have an impossible task of getting into the tightest spot there is and still be smooth. AND he has the uncanny ability to throw is lyrics and singing, just quickies right out at the right time on that difficult beat. People take what he did for granted. I DON'T. It ain't easy by any means. It's hard tellin' how many R&B artists, pop groups, singers, or whoever, copied James Brown or certainly his motif.

Thank you for this lesson, Eric. I always enjoy all of your lessons you seem to have professional insight into whatever youre teaching . One question I have is, well I don't know, it's a strange thing but I hate using a pick. I mean I know how to tuck it into my hand and use it almost like a hybrid thing, and sometimes I do practice with the pick. But most of the time I just prefer to play without the pick, like finger style. Well,I'm curious about your opinion, do you think someone can play funk with just fingers and no pick? I'm pretty sure that some people do it but it's not that common I don't see it that often. Thank you!

I mean there's no question that a pic does give a certain clackity clack, kind of like a small amplifier. But I've seen people do some amazing things with the fingers as well I'll keep working at it. I don't know if this is already a thing, but is it possible to give your point of view camera shot of the fingering on the frets? All lesson videos I've seen show it like someone is watching another person play. In my mind it would be less abstract and easier if I could watch from the player's perspective. Excellent instruction. Back in the day, when I was going to use a dominant 9th chord on and on exclusively, I would sometimes tune the D string down to C#, for an open 9th tuning. Also, a little less reverb would be my preference for this video.

Jimmy Nolan is one of my heroes and listening to him was one of the reasons I started playing. Him and Sugar Bonner and Curtis Mayfield. However, isn't it Phelps "Catfish" Collins playing that? I'm thought he cut Sex Machine with Catfish and Bootsy and those guys after the first band quit.

I really like how you break down so simple. You said it’s a movable chord, which note is the root.
The root is implied on this chord. The root is really on the on the D string. The D9 implied chord is really an Am6 or F#m7b5. Since the key is D we use the implied name.

One question I have is, well I don't know, it's a strange thing but I hate using a pick. I mean I know how to tuck it into my hand and use it almost like a hybrid thing, and sometimes I do practice with the pick.
But most of the time I just prefer to play without the pick, like finger style. Well,I'm curious about your opinion, do you think someone can play funk with just fingers and no pick? I'm pretty sure that some people do it but it's not that common I don't see it that often. Thank you!
Sure you can! I do it all the time. I play with a pick, my thumb or my fingers to get the sound and feel that I want.

I mean there's no question that a pic does give a certain clackity clack, kind of like a small amplifier. But I've seen people do some amazing things with the fingers as well I'll keep working at it. I don't know if this is already a thing, but is it possible to give your point of view camera shot of the fingering on the frets?
All lesson videos I've seen show it like someone is watching another person play.
In my mind it would be less abstract and easier if I could watch from the player's perspective.

Some channels have tried that, but it did not work out so well for most, because the guitar appears to be upside down to the viewer. Besides what you see in videos is what you would see sitting with a real teacher. Thanks so much for watching!

Excellent instruction. Back in the day, when I was going to use a dominant 9th chord on and on exclusively, I would sometimes tune the D string down to C#, for an open 9th tuning. Also, a little less reverb would be my preference for this video.

Jimmy Nolan is one of my heroes and listening to him was one of the reasons I started playing. Him and Sugar Bonner and Curtis Mayfield. However, isn't it Phelps "Catfish" Collins playing that? I'm thought he cut Sex Machine with Catfish and Bootsy and those guys after the first band quit.
I know Bootsy and Catfish played on some of Brown's recordings, just not sure about which ones. They both played on Superbad for sure. Thanks so much for watching!

Mr Eric which is the correct for D9 chord, we should have to barre EBGD strings or only press D string on fourth fret?
You have to play the D string 4th fret. If you press all(EBGD) at the 5th fret you get Am7 or C6(same thing). Thanks for watching!
