Andy Cunningham: I think Steve Jobs fired me about 5 times. I’m Andy Cunningham and I run a marketing consulting company called Cunningham Collective and I've just written a book about positioning, which is a big practice in the marketing field. It's called "Get to Aha!"
The first time Steve fired me was actually probably the most traumatic because I thought it was going to be the last time I would ever work with him and he called me into his office, or into a conference room I should say, and his CFO was sitting there and he looked at me and he said, "I'm going to cut off my contract with you. I think the work you're doing is terrible and we’re just going to stop it right now so that's it, you're fired."
And of course I was taken- you know I was emotional. I was much younger. I didn't cry but I was on the verge of it and I didn't really know what to do so I said, "Okay, well you know you owe me $35,000 and so I’ll arrange you know for you to-" he goes, "I'm not going to pay you that because your work wasn't worth it." And I was just kind of taken aback so I left the room and I called my mentor who is a man named Regis McKenna and Regis said to me, "Well, if you want to get paid by Steve Jobs you’re going to have to have something over him." And I said, "I don't have anything over Steve Jobs, you know that Regis. And he said, "No, you do." And I said, "What is that?" He goes, "In your relationships with the business press." And I said, "Oh I get it."
So I went back and I got in a meeting with Steve because I was friendly with his CFO- she got me a meeting. I walked in there to the meeting, which he took, which was amazing, and I said, "Steve you owe me $35,000. I need that money. I have a start-up company. I need to make payroll and I want you to give me a check for what you owe me." And he said, "I'm not going to do that." And I said, I said, "You have to do that," and he said, "Why?"
And I said, "Well, just so you know Steve I get about 30 or 40 phone calls a week from the business press that we've made relationships over the last couple of years asking me what kind of a guy you are to work with and I currently tell them very nice things." And he wrote me a check immediately and then he hired me back.
Steve got angry with everybody that worked with him. He was very impatient. He had a vision of what it was that you were supposed to be accomplishing and if you didn't do it fast enough or you didn't do it right enough, he definitely got angry. He threw things at people, nothing heavy, but he threw wads of paper at people, swore at people, criticized their clothing. He did all those things. So what it did to certain people is it caused us to push even harder and try to be even better, but for some people it destroyed them. Fortunately for me, I was one of the first types and I am forever grateful to him actually for the experience because now I am so much better at what I do than I would have been without him.

I always thought this line was ironic, because NOBODY kept Steve in check (except when Markkula fired him), and stories like this are legion. Steve was driven by results, true, but he also was an utter asshole and tyrant to his employees. Even when it wasn't called for.
Something I despised was how managers saw Steve's abrasive and cruel management style as valid, because Steve Jobs was the most successful CEO in the world. Insulting, abusing subordinates and filling them with resentment isn't healthy, even when it does achieve milestones.
In this story it sounds like she kept him in check, and that's why he hired her back later.

A lot of chefs in the restaurant industry are like this. They are kind of dillusional and justify their bosses tantrums all the time. I think part of it is a coping mechanism since I noticed myself doing this around them sometimes as well.

Steve Jobs would get mad when people wouldn’t work how he wanted so he’s yell at them but he doesn’t hate them.

To cope with it/endure it, I used amphetamines to lift me up because my spirit was always being destroyed on that job.
Jobs was a perfectionist early on and became more patient with time from what I’ve read. To say this is difficult is an understatement. But you do get better faster.

Steve sounds like that one teacher that always annoyed you and that seemingly always hated you but afterwards, as you think back to those times you realize that you have actually benefited from it. Even if that wasn’t his primary goal.
Ohh I actually had that kind of a teacher in once. She used to teach physics and would be really really tough on us. She would yell at us for the smallest of mistakes and everyone kind of hated her. But now when we look back at it, we actually feel very good about it(Well, not everyone. There are always some exceptions). She actually made us work so hard that we stopped making a lot of mistakes which helped us a lot in future grades.

Steve Jobs was a total failure up to the point he was re-hired by apple in 1997 at the age of 42, every project he was involved in at apple went WAY over budget, didn't produce a product that was usable (underpowered and technically inferior to the competition) and was a total market failure, it wasn't until he returned to apple that he got his act together and produced any products that made money, his time running next computers and Pixar marked a change or maturing that turned him into the person everyone loves but everyone forgets how bad he was up until the age of 43.....

I've read almost every book on Jobs going back 25 years. He was a smart guy but a total @sshole. 100%. But apparently that's what it takes to succeed in business. Steve Wozniak was the opposite.. a great guy who gave part of his Apple shares to people who were screwed by Jobs from getting a stake in the company.

Post 1997 Mr. Jobs was a little more affable. After the second demo of something my team designed, which was better than the first but not quite there, he came out of the lab and said something very much like "It is not so bad, I hear that better guys are working on it now." After that my group referred to itself as "The better guys". A rather gentle push compared to stories I had heard earlier.
Apple is a good product but Steve Jobs not so much.

Yeah Steve became angry on his employees from time to time. He wanted his products to be perfect and ahead of time so if the product didnt satisfy him then it is quite usual for him to become angry. And for the firing case...she gave only 1 of 5 causes. And that 1 of it made Steve look bad. What if the rest of the 4 were all her fault and what if Steve knew that she wasn't going to do the work properly that's why he fired her at the first place. This is the only video on RUclips that tells about this anger management issues of steve....so we also don't know the authenticity of the story. Yeah there are videos on RUclips which clearly shows him becoming angry..and that also for a good reason...but no on yet said that anything bad about him(except for some dumbasses in this comment section).
When iPhone x was being released the guy with the phone couldn't open it with face ID when he was on stage. It made him and apple look like a complete fool. Now he is not the founder of the company...he didnt sell his van to make a computer nor did he make a computer in his garage. If Steve was on the stage he would've thrown the iPhone x in anger and humiliation. Steve worked really hard to make his dreams come true and if someone prevented it from becoming true then being angry on that person is normal. Each device steve made was a part of his dream. He dreamt it...he wanted to achieve it..but if it didn't turn out the way it was supposed to..then he became angry.
For example: no one can make fun on steve's device because they are perfect in every way. But after he died apple's devices were full of flaws and apple became a laughing stock. If steve was alive other companies wouldn't have come near apple and we prolly would've gotten phones under 1000. With a wireless airpod and charger in the box.

He knew how to push people to Thier maximum limits...He knew how to sync his own vison into others heads... He was the best marketer born indeed.... This guy made up Pixar when he was fired from apple.... He knew how to express, bring out the best of makers, and make people buy it... Thats what visionaries do psychologically he made Apple a brand...and that's tougher cause so many people and sit down and make a program but making it in the direction where it fits right and of course making the person know he can do better is what a CEO does... get it He might not have made it He designed it same as musicians play music in the orchestra but the main person is the one who runs it....
and no you know how to build the flying car you know the concept to build it the hardware needed... Steve had great hardware intelligence.... you know how to get people to work for this and understand what you're trying to say you make the best one push to thier maximum limits.... And finally sell to people even if it dosmet work well and hope to upgrade it well the next time ..... Thats real work babe... Working with complex people Thier demands, satisfying what they want I'd what a CEO does and he did that perfectly.... He did the technological revolution and if he was yet alive trust me you'd be surprised on what it wouldve become

Good manager doesn't mean he or she being "laid-back". I rather want a manager that acts like a leader rather than one who throws tantrum without you knowing what your mistake was. If that's the type of manager you're looking, then you likely won't progress much. His/her employees would probably already plan escape route from such manager
