I did some research and got more info on the school and why it closed: It was built in 1952, when segregation in schools were common. It was the most prestigious black schools in the state, and attending there meant that you had to have high scores and lots of etiquette. Even when schools were required to desegregate, this school's population remained mostly black, up until its closing in 2013. Around its closing, the student body had been shrinking tremendously, which was an issue that wasnt faced in the 50s-60s during its prime. Along with this, academic skills were falling and failing, which also wasn't an issue in its prime in 1950s-60s. In 2011, the school announced that it would be closing due to the low performance (one of the lowest in the district -- only 1out of 7 students met the required math and reading skills) and failing student population, and also closed to save the district money. It leaves behind one of the best sport (primarily basketball) legacies of a high school in the state, and has many famous and well-known alumni in sports and government who reflect back on the school with warm memories. The school closed for good in July 2013.

The funding could had dried up during the Obama Democrat era out of it obviously being traditionally a Republican interest or agenda locally in DC. The whole political scene flipped upside down, reversed, and fractured on both sides since late 2015 so no one really knows what's going on now other than tax cuts for the rich, bull stock market, and the Tweeting comedian in chief. It's all so odd today showing all the exact same characteristics of old Europe in eras before the wars with the very same narratives. I'd guess there were great schools like this one back when freedom, liberty, and unity were embraced as the ideals America stood for which no longer is quite the case.
I'm guessing it is more likely with the aging population there aren't as many school age kids in that area, so they are closing some of the schools to save money. If the schools were full, no way they could close them and just shift everyone to other schools. With the post WW-II baby boom lots of new schools opened - but now some are surplus to requirements. That school was huge. Kind of sad to see it all abandoned now when once it was full of students with hopes and dreams.

This was a great explore! What an incredible school! I've never seen one with literally everything like this one! They must have had an incredible selection of electives there. There's a lot of the equipment and teaching aids that could still be used. Too bad it was just left there, and if the building is demolished someday it will all likely go into rolloff dumpsters to be thrown away. Really sad. I'm glad you got there while it's still there. I would love to explore some abandoned places here where I live but this city isnt safe alot of homeless people & drug addicts and the ones left are in bad shape or have been knocked down..
I think this is a vacational school, it has CTE programs for people who want a license in something before they graduate and regular classes for people who have trouble in regular school.
I love untouched abandond places I also love the decayed look where everything is still inside and untouched and the paint is flaking in the hallways and rooms .

I bet that high school was a regular high school and a vocational trade school put together. Ours vocational school was separate in another location then the regular school was. Our vacation school also covered 3 different school districts this the separation.

This makes me think of my old elementary school which closed about two years ago because of district funding along with a few others. The way a school can be there and then just not be there is sad. All my best memories are from that elementary school.

I hope you made some practical jokes with that doll after you were done with him. :P I was exploring an abandoned theme park 3 years ago and me and my friend found mannequin parts that we re-ensembled in an unnatural way. Then we put it in a steel container that was just standing around and we finally covered it up with a tarp and left it there for the next explorers. :)
