Love the Lyrics in this song, the first verse always hits me hard. "Time to change has come and gone. Watched your fears become your God. It's your decision."
I love that part too. It seems to be about the way the industry chews people up & spits them out. Been seeing more videos about how the Hollywood elite crowd is really a depraved soul-sucking death cult. Robin Martyr goes in depth about this stuff in his videos.
These guys have been song writing machines for many decades. I find myself so addicted to their formula, cars pass me while I'm singing their songs without me stopping and feeling embarrassed . We get this one shot to live. I'm going to live it open-hearted, wide open. "Its really just a question of your honesty, yeah your honesty".
Any band that can endure the loss of someone like Layne - and still thrive and put out great music - is simply amazing. (no offense to VH but they were never the same after DLR)
I’ll just never forget the first time I heard Layne belting it out when the Man in the Box video came out back in like 92 was it? I was hooked from then on & they STILL rock.
I know I might be in the minority but this song is one of my absolute favorite songs and one of my favorite AIC songs.. It just sounds so good and perfect
This is one of those songs you have to listen to more than a few times before it hooks you in. As far as light rock is concerned, which is what this is, light rock, this song is a masterpiece. cheers!!
Jerry was the mind behind this band. Not Layne. Layne just made the bands unique vocal sound. Jerry created this band and made the amazing AIC sound. I'm not hating on Layne at all, I love what he did for this band but Jerry never gets the credit for anything. Much respect to him. R.I.P. Layne Staley
I think he is saying no one plans on taking the path that brings you lower, not (nowhere) it actually makes more sense that he says lower. Smart line but maybe too forgiving. Some people don't care.
10:23 corinthians “I have the right to do anything,” you say-but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”-but not everything is constructive.
Videos like this are one of the things that makes me love this band. I was curious about the symbolism in the video. So I took a look at the card that the woman dropped. "1023 Corinthians Drive". Not a great leap to connect that with a passage in Corinthians 10:23 , which reads (depending on which translation you choose) "Everything is permitted, but everything isn't beneficial. Everything is permitted, but everything doesn't build others up.". That passage seems to fit well with the theme of the video. Very thoughtful and creative. "it is your Decision to do whatever you wish, but that choice may not be the best for you or others". AIC has always had great videos.
Love this song. I like most loved Layne Staley. He can't ever be replaced but how amazing is it that we have this incarnation of the band with Jerry and William writing some amazing songs whilst holding that flame for Layne and Mike Starr with dignity and, respect. AIC are one special band.
Both versions of AIC are awesome!! With Layne or without!! They are still with us after 20+ years, and still putting out absolute kick-ass music! regardless of line up changes. Enjoy them! IMO You can't dismiss how great they were with Layne, BUT they are still INCREDIBLE now with William DuVall! If you are a true AIC fan, it doesn't matter. Enjoy the awesomeness! OH and ALICE IN CHAINS, PLEASE COME TO ALBERTA !! ;)
@Jerry Cantrell you shouldnt be impersonating someone your not you gave yourself away by saying I bet your surprised to hear from me...I dont think jerry has that big of an ego...later
The reason why this sounds like the OG is because of Jerry's unique ability to harmonize with Layne. His creativity and amazing voice enhanced and elevated Layne's vocals. Not just with his guitar but his voice as well. Even the new lead singer blends amazingly well with Jerry in the background. You still get that AIC feeling every time. I couldn't be happier that they have reformed (even though it's been many years now). I got to meet Layne back in 1992. They had just wrapped up the Dirt album and were playing it at this house party before it was even released. He was an amazing guy and gave me his time without hesitation even though I was a nobody Montana boy.. I still remember every word. My buddy introduced us and I said I just moved from Billing Montana. He said, "It's that by Kalispell??? I said "Close enough! It's an honor to meet you. We listen to you all the time and I'm in love with the Sap album. He just said "right on". Thanks man. That's all I can remember but he was just chill. FYI... Kalispell is nowhere near Billings lol. I guarantee he would be honored for Jerry to continue on the legacy that is Alice in Chains. I promise you he has realized his addiction was a crutch for the band and he has learned the true value of life. I embrace every member of this band because they still produce quality music and always pay homage to Layne in the lyrics. Jerry again goes above and beyond in his ability to honor and reproduce the sound that we have all grown to love. If you can't appreciate the fact that we still get to listen to AIC music then kindly fuck off. That's all I gotta say about that...
"The paradox of trauma is that it has both the power to destroy and the power to transform and resurrect. " Hence It's "your Decision" Got you in there Hommie! Thanks for having my back
The one thing you have to realize with the new line up for AiC is that Jerry is singing a lot more which is why the songs sound very similar to the original line up with Layne. The new singer has talent but Jerry is what pulls the two versions together.
Jerry C is the man!!! I put my hat down to the guy and his musical style captures me....he song wrote majority for AIC, his signature rhythms are fricken out of this world!! especially when he creates those dark sounding string bending riffs. The guy is a legend!!! And at this present, is still representing. He ain't no sell out that's for sure. And you can tell when he heavily implements his style in some tracks.
+KalarniaTamila Yeah, as it is with just about everything associated with Alice In Chains, Jerry Cantrell is among the most overlooked & underrated guitarists & songwriters of his era. Alice always had that extra dimension of blues & classic Southern rock in their arsenal that was every bit as mindblowing as their crunchy, monster riffs and fist pumping headbangers.
The whole album is a masterpiece but when I found this song, it blew my mind into space and visualised an image of Layne Staley looking down and smiling.
I first heard Alice in Chains when I was hired to work for an Active Rock station in 2001. Loved every song we ever played by Alice In Chains. Can't get enough of their music. This video must be about Hotel California. You can check out but you can never leave.
Hardcore AIC fans dont hate Duvall, its the newbies who think its cool to hate a new singer after the original died or left. I have seen it to other bands
And this is where it all started for me. I remember listening to this song on the radio back then. Never heard of AIC before but i liked the song very much. Great song. Thank you Lane for all the inspiration. Thank you Jerry for keeping it going. Thank you Alice in Chains for coming back and keeping this alive.
or even now if they had chris cornell as lead vocals ..the emotion would return in the music there's just no emotion in this band anymore at least that's how it seems to me
+Rick and it sounds like that because the true pain and misery of art died. thats the epitomy of creation,,,pain and misery with whats bared before your life, the creation of art off of misery is a form of trying to create something interesting something that doesnt make u want to pull ur hair out and gouge out on eye just for fun.h he became bored becoming commercialized and ended the artistic misery he felt. plus withdraws a btch.
Most of the bands that release a new album after a long time use to make it according the new sounds and they don't seem the same band, specially if the main singer is different. However, this song is like time never went by and Layne Staley was still alive: same groove, same vocal armonies... it's like it was 1994 again.
I saw Aic first tour/show with William in Portland, M.E. Jerry opened saying we love and miss you every day Layne, almost brought a tear to my eye. Then they rocked.Wish I had been a little older so I could’ve seen Layne play in 90’s.
Call me crazy but this track is probably my favorite by AIC both new and old lineup. It’s got the classic harmonies but it’s groove is just awesome with heartfelt and heartbreaking lyrics

I haven't listened to a full album from AIC in the 2000's era so I started with Black Gives Way To Blue and always come back to this song. I agree with one of the comments saying this could be off Jar Of Flies. Beautiful song!
The majority of the ones that complain about AiC post Layne Staley fail to realize that if it wasn't for Jerry 85% of the songs in the entire AiC catalog wouldn't exist. This is def the album that divided the fan base but shit give it a rest. Jerry Cantrell is the mind behind most of the songs. Enjoy it while we still have them around.
I was SO happy when AIC released this album. Layne is sorely missed but Jerry has written some of his best stuff over the last 3 albums. AIC for life!!
I think this is a visually stylized version of a cyber-funeral for Layne that includes a lot of metaphor. The mood is dark, everyone's wearing black, and no one is smiling. Layne's body wasn't found until 1 - 2 weeks after he deceased, so perhaps this is Alice In Chains' tribute to their legendary friend & fellow musician who felt he deserved a better sendoff. There's a lot of obvious debauchery & hedonism in this video ... some that's befitting to Layne's legacy, and some that's metaphorical. One thing that strikes me is the overweight & gluttonous man, the only one not wearing black, who is feasting with greasy fingers on the cannibalistic delicacies at his table. He is obviously the record label exec who is happily banking on the money he's going to make when record sales inevitably soar after the death of a legend on his label.
Makes sense. Layne made his 'decision' to continue using. 'The path that leads to nowhere....' The rest of the guys come to terms with it in this song and video.

Jerry always had a great voice. He has developed it leaps and bounds in the years since Layne passed, though.
Chain's are one of the most talented rock band ever produced in our human history.
2021 who is still listening ?
I think most of our true Rock lovers those who are fond of 80's &90's old school classic rock bands .
Love from India, Kolkata.
love right back to ya, from america. rock on, brother
Chains ,STP and Soundgarden. The 90s was great.
2023! AIC for life!
2023 and still..
14 years after it was released, and I still seek this song for the comfort it provides...
I totally hear you Erika I’m doing the exact same thing at 7:14 am here in Pennsylvania.
Never gets old.
Consistently repeat for me
Guys, here's a wild idea. If you can't enjoy the song because Layne isn't in the band anymore, don't listen to it
Idk man... that’s a pretty abstract concept.
Damn I hate the William haters.
I miss Layne too but damn... the man died... what they hell are they supposed to do? It took me a while to warm up to Alice in Chains without him but the music is good so just sit back and enjoy!
And we’ll still enjoy this great band
That just makes too much sense. In all honesty, I still miss Layne, but you can't deny the right choice was made moving forward.
X allthatremains I get what you mean but I wish they’d used a new band name and leave Alice in chains as a legendary band. And I think it’s because Alice without Layne is very different to Alice with William there will always be a conflict here.
I love Jerry’s guitar solo in this🖤
Katie Jo same im in love with it i listen to it alot i always wanted to play a guitar growin up
Yeah 😁😎
Perfectly written for this song. One of their best solos in my opinion.
▶️🎧🎸👩🎤🇫🇷
Love the Lyrics in this song, the first verse always hits me hard. "Time to change has come and gone. Watched your fears become your God. It's your decision."
I love that part too. It seems to be about the way the industry chews people up & spits them out. Been seeing more videos about how the Hollywood elite crowd is really a depraved soul-sucking death cult. Robin Martyr goes in depth about this stuff in his videos.
Miss you Layne. :( and you rock William Duvall don't listen to the haters man!
mike stanberry Duvall is doing a kick-ass job in AIC.
mike stanberry Saw them Live last year and they were absolutely perfect. William did the Layne songs mad justice. I absolutely love the new music.
yep in my opinion will duvall kills it as good as any of the previous guys! but soundgarden is still the best! and will always be.
dmaxhd1 nahh
mike stanberry I bet they lost allot of REAL AIC fans when he joined. I can't beileve they hired him as lead singer instead of backing vocals.
This song needs more air time on the radio. So good.
It was played nonstop on the radio when it first came out in 2009. I bought the album on CD.
Absolutely love the laid back vibes of AIC. Jerry's voice perfectly compliments that.
Not to mention he's the pillar that makes them sound so great .
This band is incredible
Your right!
Yes it is
@@Anonimo1770 agreed
Fav band ever
Any band that can endure the loss of someone like Layne - and still thrive and put out great music - is simply amazing. (no offense to VH but they were never the same after DLR)
Cantrell is one of the best songwriters ever. A true musical genius
VH SUCKED BALLS after DLR, to say the least!
These men are living legends and deserve way more kudos than they get.
I never got into them when Layne was alive but loving it all.
They get the kudos from us, the fans. Not some bullshit "club". I'm sure they prefer it that way, I know I would
I’ll just never forget the first time I heard Layne belting it out when the Man in the Box video came out back in like 92 was it? I was hooked from then on & they STILL rock.
I have always felt that this song is a testament as to how Hollywood or fame consumes someone...
Damn this song is so good and so underrated.
What I love about alice n chains guitarist is he takes simple ass chords and makes creative emotional and unique shit with them. Amazing.
I know I might be in the minority but this song is one of my absolute favorite songs and one of my favorite AIC songs..
It just sounds so good and perfect
Same here.
Nutshell ....
It really has that old school aic feel to it
This is one of those songs you have to listen to more than a few times before it hooks you in. As far as light rock is concerned, which is what this is, light rock, this song is a masterpiece. cheers!!
@@BeyondOurSolarSystem hey can you explain this song meaning?
The lyrics and the video, tell a story,.. great interpretation, a true work of art...for those who can "see" it. Michael.
I agree
fact
Although, Layne had the deep growl, Jerry had the high, powerful vocal. Both are key players in this iconic group.
I'm with you Bro and just glad Jerry is still Rocking.
Steve, I'm just glad, Alice in Chains, is still rocking. ;)
No one plans to take a path that brings you nowhere...
Man that line hit like a ton of bricks. Genious.
Yeah, you don't plan it but it happens anyway.
When i noticed that biblical reference i thought ... "ok this is not a coincidence..."
Corinthians??????????
It's 1st Corinthians. There are 2.
Corinthians 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
Corinthians 🤩🖤
It’s kind of nostalgic and strange that I can hear Layne’s voice throughout the song. I don’t know if this happens to anybody else.
They're all still mourning the loss of Layne.
I hear layne in almost all the songs they put out since 2002
It's the background
All the time
Absolutely. Jerry and Layne were like brothers
This song and those guitars give me chills
Love this song. I like most loved Layne Staley. He can't ever be replaced but how amazing is it that we have this incarnation of the band with Jerry and William writing some amazing songs whilst holding that flame for Layne and Mike Starr with dignity and, respect. AIC are one special band.
Layne is dead, God rest his soul. The 90's, have passed on as well. I've loved AIC from the start and still do.
OH and ALICE IN CHAINS, PLEASE COME TO ALBERTA !! ;)
Wow, 6 years ago I posted this, and it still rings true.
Jerry Cantrell has an amazing voice. Underrated singer.
I am 67 this song turned me on to Alice in Chains. Love it 😊
The most beautiful music that's been produced in a long time
yo solamente escuchaba los álbumes de Layne... pero esta canción es hermosa... ❤
@Jerry Cantrell thank you very much for responding I'm good hope you are too .
@Jerry Cantrell you shouldnt be impersonating someone your not you gave yourself away by saying I bet your surprised to hear from me...I dont think jerry has that big of an ego...later
It’s 2020 and this song hasn’t aged a bit!
I got into all these songs in 2020, off black gives way to blue and dinosaurs, really amazing stuff
Amen brother
"The paradox of trauma is that it has both the power to destroy and the power to transform and resurrect. "
Hence
It's "your Decision"
Got you in there Hommie!
Alice always had that extra dimension of blues & classic Southern rock in their arsenal that was every bit as mindblowing as their crunchy, monster riffs and fist pumping headbangers.
as well as the old dark hymnal sounds....very heavily influenced in all aic music as well as jerry's solo's
Um, obviously? He's the link between the two eras???? I mean, what kind of observation was that???
+Kwest well said
The whole album is a masterpiece but when I found this song, it blew my mind into space and visualised an image of Layne Staley looking down and smiling.
One of the most beautiful songs ever, Jerry is a goddamn genius
I first heard Alice in Chains when I was hired to work for an Active Rock station in 2001. Loved every song we ever played by Alice In Chains. Can't get enough of their music. This video must be about Hotel California. You can check out but you can never leave.
Hardcore AIC fans dont hate Duvall, its the newbies who think its cool to hate a new singer after the original died or left. I have seen it to other bands
And this is where it all started for me. I remember listening to this song on the radio back then. Never heard of AIC before but i liked the song very much. After a couple of years i finally got internet to my house, i still remembered this song so i decided to search the band. Yep, i discovered a fucking treasure. Little did i know it was only the introduction to my most loved band to this day!
This is the greatest band ever brother. I'm in some deep depression right now and this is the only band that picks me up so I can function.
@@xxxtenksxxx8748 We all got our demons and good music is a strong medicine. I love listening to "Get born again" when im in my dark moods. Just keep listening to anything that makes you feel strong and no matter what remember that you are not alone!
I've loved AIC since the very beginning and I can definitely say there's no other band out there with the real raw emotion and truth that this band sings about. It resonates with so many of us. It's why I've always loved them. I miss Layne dearly, but William isn't too bad.
Rock 'N Roll True Stories brought me here. GREAT channel.
I'm dumb, I stopped listening to AIC when Layne passed. They are still great with DuVall. Just was set in my ways, gotta keep an open mind.
Great song. Thank you Lane for all the inspiration. Thank you Jerry for keeping it going. Thank you Alice in Chains for coming back and keeping this alive.
Can you imagine if this was released back in '92 at the height of the Seattle scene? This song would've been huge.
Eh, it would be on the same level as Heaven Beside You
or even now if they had chris cornell as lead vocals ..the emotion would return in the music there's just no emotion in this band anymore at least that's how it seems to me
+Rick it's just as if they're doing it because they have to....... not because they want to
+Rick 4:13
+Rick and it sounds like that because the true pain and misery of art died. thats the epitomy of creation,,,pain and misery with whats bared before your life, the creation of art off of misery is a form of trying to create something interesting something that doesnt make u want to pull ur hair out and gouge out on eye just for fun.h he became bored becoming commercialized and ended the artistic misery he felt. plus withdraws a btch.
This never gets old , it still rocks today even after all these years.
Most of the bands that release a new album after a long time use to make it according the new sounds and they don't seem the same band, specially if the main singer is different. However, this song is like time never went by and Layne Staley was still alive: same groove, same vocal armonies... it's like it was 1994 again.
carajillodwsq Yep...always thought this tune would fit on Jar Of Flies as well as any of the new albums...timeless...
I saw Aic first tour/show with William in Portland, M.E. Jerry opened saying we love and miss you every day Layne, almost brought a tear to my eye. Then they rocked.Wish I had been a little older so I could’ve seen Layne play in 90’s.
Tasteful guitar! Jerry is a monster! Love the lead licks and bits and the various tones he uses!
I love how when you hear the first few strums on the guitar, you can kinda tell it's Jerry Cantrell.
Or Polly by Nirvana 🤣
Jerry is such an underrated vocalist.
And guitarist
Call me crazy but this track is probably my favorite by AIC both new and old lineup. It’s got the classic harmonies but it’s groove is just awesome with heartfelt and heartbreaking lyrics
In my mind, I can almost hear Layne singing from heaven as well. The BEST band EVER
Jerry Cantrell is amazing! I love this song. (July 2019-Oregon)
Agreed😃
In the beginning, I was having those nostalgic 'nutshell' feelings. Amazing!
no one could ever replace layne but william duvall sure is doing an amazing job
I really think this is right up there with one of their best songs.
This song is beautiful live..Heard it last night, such a great show.
WoW 12M views! Layne would be So proud of Jerry and the band.
I miss him SO much.
Addiction is hard. 😔😔
#Feb2019 still going strong
Right
Seven Durham hey Supp
Yes, it is and keep on keeping on!!!!
Stay strong you can do it!
Don't stop fighting. It can be done.
Durante algun tiempo me renege a escuchar los ultimos albums de la banda, me arrepiento tanto. Esto es hermoso
Badass Tune...Cantrell Is Masterful.
This video taps into the evil behind the entertainment industry that I am sure the musicians in Alice in Chains have seen all too well.
Jerry Cantrell and William DeVall are
pure "magic". Add a whole new dimension to this already amazing
band. Love it ❤️❤❤
@Jerrycantrell_12 Thank you , you have just made my life ❤️
WOW !!! I am so much admiration for what you do!!! When I pick myself up off the floor I will get back to you!! OMG
I am 9 years old i love this whole band so much rest in peace layne you lived such a good life making such kick-ass music
I haven't listened to a full album from AIC in the 2000's era so I started with Black Gives Way To Blue and always come back to this song. I agree with one of the comments saying this could be off Jar Of Flies. Beautiful song!
I may have said that. This song definitely sounds like it could have been on Jar of Flies or Sap.
If I ever got a chance to meet Jerry Cantrell, all I m gonna say to him is
"THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING"
I was SO happy when AIC released this album. Layne is sorely missed but Jerry has written some of his best stuff over the last 3 albums. AIC for life!!
Jerry wrote nearly everything
This song never gets old great video
Jerry carries on the band, I watch the video all the time
I think this is a visually stylized version of a cyber-funeral for Layne that includes a lot of metaphor.
Love your analogy Kate!
Makes sense. Layne made his 'decision' to continue using. 'The path that leads to nowhere....' The rest of the guys come to terms with it in this song and video.
Matt Brewster
Very nicely and succinctly put, Matt.
+Kate Nelson just left an Alice in chains concert. ;-)
so sad but true my friend.........we all a number in the world. and Layne's number was up.
William Duvall is a great musician. He doesn't want to be the new Layne, he just wants to play and sing
Can't believe it's been 11yrs already since this release. Seems like yesterday.
One of the best tribute songs ever
Such a great song, Jerry has a fantastic set of pipes himself! I absolutely have to say THANK YOU to each band member for carrying on, and for doing such a beautiful job in bringing us some of the greatest music ever made!!! Thanks again AIC!!! We love you guys and wish you only the best!!!
▶️🎧🎸👩🎤🌟
@Jerry Cantrell I'm good, can't complainin. What about you, how are you doing?? Hope that everything is going good with you!!
@Jerry Cantrell Holy shit man, you're hilarious!!!! You must have forgotten that you tried this lie once before, then remembered after the fact, lmao!!!! Is he aware that you're impersonating him? That's fucked up man, c'mon..
This video reminded me of the 7 deadly sins. Life lesson: Don't let temptation fool you.
GREAT VIDEO!!!
