As a 51 year old woman with stage 4 breast cancer, I don't know how much time I have left on this earth. But I can leave this world listening to all of Alice In Chains absolutely beautiful music. Layne Staley is without a doubt the best vocalist to ever grace this earth in my opinion. His voice sends shivers down my spine. Love you, Layne. Wish you could have beaten your demons and stayed with us longer! 😢😭
Luv2You from Bristol,UK. ; ) We are, regardless of outcome, still the luckiest of the lucky to have our given existence during this very short, yet extremely forfilled point on the map of Human output... In all areas, music, art, tech etc etc . Much Love2YOU !
Lyrics Bury me softly in this womb I give this part of me for you Sand rains down and here I sit Holding rare flowers in a tomb, in bloom Down in a hole And I don't know if I can be saved See my heart, I decorate it like a grave You don't understand who they thought I was supposed to be Look at me now a man Who won't let himself be Down in a hole, feelin' so small Down in a hole, losin' my soul I'd like to fly But my wings have been so denied Down in a hole And they've put all the stones in their place I've eaten the sun so my tongue Has been burned of the taste I have been guilty of kicking myself in the teeth I will speak no more of my feelings beneath Down in a hole, feelin' so small Down in a hole, losin' my soul I'd like to fly But my wings have been so denied Bury me softly in this womb (oh I wanna be inside of you) I give this part of me for you (oh I wanna be inside of you) Sand rains down and here I sit (oh I wanna be inside of you) Holding rare flowers in a tomb (oh I wanna be inside) Down in a hole, feelin' so small Down in a hole, losin' my soul Down in a hole, feelin' so small Down in a hole, out of control I'd like to fly But my wings have been so denied
I'm 44. I suffer from depression and schizophrenia since i'm 19. I continue to live for my mother. I listen to Alice in chains every day, their songs makes me feel better. Edit: Just a message to thank all the the good persons who wrote nice comments to me. English is not my first language and it took me a certain time to have learned it by myself. It's not perfect but i think it's understandable. I m still alive but i also still suffer everyday. I live in Belgium and i speak french. It makes me happy that so much people oversea are nicer to me than the majority of my family. Thank you, stay human and even if i never see you, i love you, bye.
I just read that you have pretty severe mental illness. Dang, brings tears to my eyes. My brother was diagnosed with the same illness as you, and also the age of 19. I cried every night for a year or more. You want to help them soooo bad! You can’t! It’s takes a good doctor, and the right medication. A great thing is he gets better with age. I would have guessed progressively worse. He’s now 56, will have a birthday next month. : ) I love him so much! He lives 4 hours away. He wants to come visit for his Bday. I can’t wait to see him!!!Oh my, gotta get a gift! Lol Btw he liked and listened to AIC to. U guys have a lot in common! Lol. He love love loves to eat at really good restaurants. One of his fav’s to do. Our sister will be driving him down. They will be here on the 22nd of this month. Ok then, You take really good care of yourself. I’m glad that you care so deeply for your mother. That’s sweet! Love yourself, you have got to love yourself! Have you heard Voices by AIC? Good song, Jerry Cantrell sings and prob wrote it also. Play it soon. Prayers for you, and sending love -
As a guy suffering from phases of depression and low sef-esteem, this song brings me to tears. And as ironic as it sounds: It's a damn great feeling and it helps a lot.
People with depression can relate to the feelings and phrases these songs bring to us . It's a weird feeling having music that can depress you but uplift or at least help you understand your not alone
Sending you hugs. I’m 64 & from a large family. It’s a painful position having to experience the elder siblings leaving. I feel like I’m being cornered. There’s 2 brothers under me & one has MS. I’ve already lost one elder brother & one elder sister. Hang in there! X
Because it soothes your heart and soul with expressions, undertones and understandings of pain. I'm also a Good Guy who lives with the Pain of My Life Experiences and Daily Stress, Anxiety and Depression. I'm a Rock Singer as well and I'm learning to sing as much AIC as I can. Its SUCH a RELEASE!☠🇺🇸🦅🔥
This is a true story: When I was 18, we said goodbye to Layne, and I was really sad. I read that layne had a foundation made in his name. I wrote a small letter to them, explaining how much Layne meant to all of us, and a lot of our youth struggles with drugs, depression, etc. I wrote that I was an addict too. Since I was 15. I also sent $1. I was definitely not expecting a letter written back to me from Layne's mom. Her name is Nancy McCullum, and she runs the foundation. She sent me a poster of aic from the Moore Theater, some stickers, and in solemn disbelief, the program from Laynes celebration of life (or funeral) The program had the names Chris Cornell, Mark Lanagan from Screaming Trees, and Nancy and Ann Wilson from Heart. Chris Cornell and Heart did a cover of "Ring them Bells" written by Bob Dylan, and Mark Lanagan read a poem Layne had written. Anyway, I never thought that sending $1 to Laynes foundation would merit anything! Nancy, Laynes mom said encouraging words to me in regards to my opiate dependency. After years of on again off again substance abuse, I'm finally 150 days sober. It gets better. Thank you Nancy, Laynes mom, for the awesome keepsakes, and for giving birth and raising my favorite singer. God bless and take life one day at a time.
Michael comazzi I’m so proud of you. I’m sure Layne would be too. What an honor to get a letter back from his mom. Good good people is what that is. Stay strong, drink water!
Michael comazzi this made me tear up. It’s her way of saying don’t give up man. Keep fighting to live. There is something in you that reminds her of her son. That’s beautiful.
My son passed 3 yrs ago on the 19th of Aug. He turned me on to this music and we bonded even more from it. It's all I listen to now. Rock On Eric Crawford RIP
@@LaleP That's the only thing that it can be. I've played guitar for years and simply can't approach writing something as deep and amazing as this, and it's really just a simple song structure. But that's the point alot of people miss...it's not about technical ability with these types of songs, it's just *_real_* authentic feeling, and some people have these gifts naturally and when they form a band to make songs as great as this, destiny is the only way to explain it. I've seen guys in person who can shred like nobody's business, but that doesn't mean anything if there is no soul, which is totally unique and instantly recognizable. There is a BIG difference between a player and a musician.
@@jordandedomusic I totally agree. Hendrix was another one I really admire for his ability to channel feelings into his playing. Many people have described his live playing as a force of nature when he was on top of his game.
It’s what sets them apart. They do their own vocals and harmonies; they bring in no ringers. So amazing. It’s one of Layne’s best performances imo. It’s one of their very best songs.
I wish you the best of luck with everything! Hate that C word, lost my husband and my dad both in 2018 to this dreadful disease. I hope all in all you are doing ok. I just saw where Jerry Cantrell texted you! Now that’s a mood uplifter! He’s so cute! Now, and then! Lol. U take care and may God bless you always!-Joy*
I discovered Alice In Chains a few months ago, (I’m 14 and have been blind to grunge most of my life) and I asked my dad if he likes them. He pulls out their entire discography and we have a lengthy discussion of the 90s and how awesome grunge was.
Great! I went to college when AIC was getting big and loved their music. I'm glad you are opening you mind up to their great music, but also check out some of the other great bands of that Grunge era...the last best rock era.
@@Praise___YaH I'm all for sharing the Lord's word & all (as long as it's not forced/unwanted), but what does this have to do with this comment thread? It's just completely random & unrelated...
Down in a hole is indeed a song by Jerry Cantrell to his long-time love Courtney Clarke. One of the greatest things in music is the fact that a song can change his meanings and basically tell a new story, based on the person singing it. Whenever layne sang Down in a hole, it Immediately took you to his long-time battle against heroin which sadly... he eventually lost. Music is an incredible thing, lets just enjoy it in every possible way, RIP Layne ♥ forever missed ♥
Koby Meidam, perfectly said man. I’m battling heroin addiction myself and let me tell you it’s really hard and difficult drug and just to think about how I’m going to fight this battle for the rest of my life makes me sad. It was the perfect drug to numb my pain at the time. AiC has always been my top favorite band of all time. I’m thankfulI was born in 1985 and my older brothers introduced me to grunge and all of the amazing music of the 90’s when I was a kid. I wish music was still as badass as it used to be. RIP LANE, and thank you AiC for all of your amazing music that you blessed us with!!!
This is “art” rock to me, everything about this song is pure musical genius. From lyrical content, harmonies, melodies, transitions this is one of the most artistically composed songs from the grunge era. This band was something special.
When I hear this Im driving across Canada in my 89 Chevy truck 20 years ago. I played this on a Discmen with the cassette tape attachment plugged into my truck. No cell phone just music and 6000 miles of open road . That’s nostalgia right there
Are you for real time don't stop for no one maybe u should go one tour to a moargue how do u see it like that I dont know feel sad for your lack of heart Carma Carma ?
@@andrewpoteet2231 haha that’s pretty cool man Alaska is a beautiful place it reminds me and lot like Newfoundland with the fishing, wilderness and lots of snow in the winter
I did the same in my 93' s-10 4 banger back in 1999 from Florida to Seattle via St. Louis... this music with ALOT of Redbull and many packs of smokes got me thru... Something you can never recreate...
I'm 56 and going through new depression therapy. I started listening to Alice and Cains again, as well as Mad Season. Layne and Jerry's vocals ,along with the lyrics make me cry almost uncontrollably. It's so beautiful, perfect.
I'm 60 years old and Layne is the most moving, loved artist I listen to. He was so amazing. I'm 10 months into my sobriety and somehow I find this music encouraging. Weird but true.

I'm a drug addict in rehab... I recently relapsed after years without heroin. I discovered Alice in Chains a year ago. I've been playing the guitar since I was 13 and I learned to love it thanks to the blues and mainly thanks to classic rock from the 60s and 70s (Hendrix is my hero). I can't explain in words what attracts me to Alice in Chains' music, perhaps because Layne and I went through the same thick fog of heroin. I suffer from severe depression but when I listen to this music I feel understood, heartened, alive. I dedicate this song to all those who have faced and are facing the battle against that terrible evil that is addiction. Now Layne and Jerry have become my friends, yes I consider them just like old friends who keep me company in bad times. Now I'm going through withdrawal and I feel hopeless, I'm tired of suffering like this... perhaps this is also why I fell back into the substance. I am writing to you from Italy and sending you a warm and affectionate hug... sorry for my poorly articulated English. I've eaten the sun so my tongue has been burn of the taste This line send me chills up and down mi body
I really feel touched reading your comment, you know, this kind of honesty is what i find lacking in this world right now. I hope you can get to the end of your addiction :). This song is absolutely beautiful and sincere. My favorite line is 'I have been guilty of kicking myself in the teeth'. I think you would like the music of Rowland S. Howard, he was a terrific guitarist and also went through addiction. I send you a hug from Colombia.
Jimi Hendrix is also my hero and been playing guitar since I was 12 Alice in Chains has an intangible quality like no other Act and the more you hear them the more unworldly they appear... all this being said I have to include I have been making my living playing old school country music for decades but this is what happens in the car on the way to the gig.....
Hi guys, thank you all for your messages of affection, which have arrived like caresses all the way here... knowing that there are people so distant who dedicate even a minute of their lives to you brings me to tears. Now I'm under methadone treatment. At the beginning it was a maintenance dose to get through the withdrawal. Now I've raised the dosage a bit..Methadone gives me a bit of an antidepressant boost in the morning but then when darkness falls, darkness comes and the pain, the awful pain... I had a recent benzodiazepine intoxication which was almost fatal. The pain was too much and I couldn't even play Guitar anymore. Something that has never happened to me in my life because music is my "everything". I will have to have a visit in a few weeks to see why all the antidepressants I have used up to now have not worked and therefore it is a way to also analyze the relapses and the reason why I chose heroin. it seems that my brain only finds peace with opiates and opioids and at most benzodiazepines. wish me good luck dear friends of music and you Layne protect me from above. ❤️
This band never fails to comfort me, even though Layne is far gone. AIC is the only thing which comforts my inner conflict. One day I hope to succeed, when my demons are no more, and when something meaningful exists that makes me want to strive for more. I thank you, for making me feel less alone in the darkest times.
Narred Darr No, I am launching a website called ourtimealone.com so I think I get it, but it's impossible for me to truly get your intent with such an ambiguous statement. It will be in memory of Tesla, do you get that ?
This song made me tear up as I'm writing this. I think about Layne and how he couldn't beat drug addiction and how empty, sad and alone he must have felt isolating himself and not really having contact with anyone who was close to him in the last years of his life and then dying alone. I think of all of the people who are going through this right at this moment and it makes me sad, and shed tears, I know that there is always a way to help others. You are never alone in this world, ever. People care more than you could ever realize and we want to see and hear about you getting better. RIP Layne. Love and support to all the fallen angels out there who are struggling right now.
Breaks my heart ☮️ Layne was & is so very much loved 💜 if it only could of been enough ☮️ ( I’ve been begging my daughters to name the next baby Layne boy or girl!! I’m still begging no replies have been given yet )
Unfortunately you can't save those who don't want to be saved. My family tried for years to help me. I'd usually oblige when they would send me to rehabs and counseling but deep down i never wanted to quit so I didn't. Month and a half sober now. Longest time ever for me. There's always hope for you but you have to crave sobriety far more than that high.
I live where he's from, and I still tear up about him from time to time. He was so sad after the love of his life passed. I wish I could have seen AIC live with Layne at least once. I moved to the area in 1994 though, within weeks of Kurt's passing. In 1996 when AIC did their unplugged they mentioned it was their first show in 3 years, sadly it would be one of Layne's last before he went into seclusion.
Cuz they were fuck-heads at the time, they had everything but abused it all, to me thats not their fault as they came from nothing to the big stage with money, drugs, booze, woman, they were never prepared for the big time, out of the band only jerry had no issues in the limelight but deep down who knows if he took a shot, or had a lot of lines, this we will never know as he is getting on a bit he aint going to say what happened to the original A,I,C, but he is still alive, wish they all were, William DuVall does his best and credit to him but he is no Layne, to me he really cant pull off what Layne and Jerry did with the vocal harmonies with both the Jar Of Flies and SAP ep's.
It’s actually about Jerry leaving the love of his life…In the liner notes of 1999's Music Bank box set, Jerry Cantrell dedicated the song to Courtney Clarke, his "long-time love." He wrote: "It's the reality of my life, the path I've chosen and in a weird way it kind of foretold where we are right now. It's hard for us to both understand... that this life is not conducive to much success with long-term relationships.
I'd say if anything were gonna go even further in the opposite direction. Cuz nowadays most music has no emotion or depth to it at all. But I guess that's to b expected when 20 ppl work on one song and musicians don't even write their own lyrics😥
This song is so fucking good. Huge soundgarden fan, but this song is the best song I have ever heard. Depression ain't no joke. These lyrics have so much truth. "I'd like to fly, but my wings have been so denied". That's fantastic
Layne died 19 years ago today, I started getting into Alice in Chains last year and they are now personally one of my all time favorite bands and Layne one of my personally favorite singers. RIP Layne you were one of the greatest singers to ever live, I wish you were still making music and making us smile.
Same here, just now catching up on all this great music. And I'm 67!! Where the hell was I when all this was every day and we hadn't lost so many of these awesome artists? MTV was on in my home a LOT, radios, kids cds, road trips, etc... and NOW I hear what was being said. I'm just grateful I'm finally here, didn't miss out completely.
the magic of this song is that it's about a romantic relationship, yet anyone who has ever felt lost in their depression can grasp and truly understand the feeling this song emits. i've never been that emotionally damaged by a romance, but i have been really low and that's where i connect with this song
Right there with you (also 60+ woman) I go through phases--obviously I posted on this video a few years ago, but lately (thanks to depression--yet again) I RE-rediscovered AIC in Feb of 2022, and have been quite 'immersively obsessed' with them ever since. Their lyrics, while dark as a moonless night and disturbing at times, speak to me much more than anything 'lighter' could (at least for now). This time around I've tangentially discovered amazing stuff like Jerry Cantrell's solo stuff, Mad Season, Mark Lanegan, and others, as I try to wean myself somewhat from listening to AIC 24/7...
It’s crazy to me to think this band is still so underrated. People that say they listen to rock barely listen to these guys it seems like and they’re the best band of all time. Will forever be grateful for this band especially Layne Staley
Soundgarden, STP, Filter, and Alice in Chains are my go to for the beginning of a rocking night out. I can give a shit less what others think because we all know what real talent sounds like.
Why do people ignore the actual definitions of words these days? The word underrated now means a million things. But basically it means "I like this band". That's it. No one ever rated Alice in Chains low. They are one of the greatest bands from the grunge era. 's so moronic to pretend they weren't one of the biggest bands in the world. Just dumb.
I wouldn't really call them underrated. They got enough airplay on the MTV and the radio back in the day. And they were one of the 4 most prominent acts during the Grunge fad. They're fondly remembered by those of us who ACTUALLY grew up in the 90s (like myself. I was born in '88 and thus I'm a real 90s Kid with real 90s Childhood Experience). Maybe where you live they didn't gain much popularity, but where I live, you couldn't go anywhere without hearing AIC
Grew up hearing Alice In Chains in the background of my childhood, as a man early in my 20s I’m truly listening and gauging the lyrics on a whole different level. Especially listening to this traveling across the country from Minnesota to Virginia. What an incredible voice and band and even more so, the song. Just a capsule of emotion and cadence u can truly feel to the core. RIP Layne I wish I lived in a world where I could have seen him flourish in person, he’s easily one of the best of all time.
It will mean something else when you are 30, 40 and 50 too. Music does that at different times of your life. I’m 53 and bought this 30 years ago and have got something different from their tracks (and other music) as I’ve aged.
Thank you, Alice In Chains, for helping me get through my grandfather’s recent death. Your music is medicine to my soul. Your lyrics echo the pain I’m feeling and make me feel less alone. I don’t have to sit and dwell in my own thoughts, I can sit and listen to my thoughts being echoed back to me in the form of music. I don’t know if I’m explaining it right but … it’s certainly helping me through. Thank you 🙏🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
Recently lost my best friend (who was 33). AIC was his favorite band (and one of mine too), and this song in particular has helped me a lot too. Hope you're doing well.
Every once in awhile I need a dose of Layne. Tears right now for him. Miss this band so fucking much! This guy got me through my Heroin addiction. Will always be grateful.
Cameron Rice A recovering addict as well. i think laynes life and story has probaly saved alot of lives. in that way he will live on forever. stay strong and know there are millions of addicts out here that have your back.
Connor Phebus I hope his story has saved lives, but a lot of kids out there see great artists like him, Lou Reed, and man others and think it's cool. They don't realize that these great people would have given up everything to rid themselves of their vice.
At some point in my life I was depressed. Taking lot's of drugs, and my soul was completely lost. I used to listen to this song often times then. It always brought me to tears in such a way that the floodgates opened. Nowadays I'm good, and when I listen to it now, it still brings a tear to my eye, I guess because the song is very loaded to me or something. And I realize that I'm doing so much better as I was back then, so these are good tears.
When I feel like ending it all I put on their music. When I'm on top of the world I play their music. When I'm anywhere in between I am listening to this still today in 2023 and since day 1. And on days like today, it's the only thing keeping me going. Thank you AIC. It's the only music I can feel all the way to my soul and have it radiate throughout. I hope when we die, there's eternal AIC music...
Layne will keep on singing up there.Alice in chains will never be forgotten as well as the Grunge genre.this is the music i listn to when i feel like taking off the steam
Hearing them play this live in Tulsa last week literally brought me to tears. This song has given me chills since I was 12 & now I'm 35 and nothing has changed there.
I come here everyday since I lost my dad 2 months ago from suicide. He was 52 n battling cancer and it was taking over. I had to watch my dad fade away more n more everyday. I try not to be mad for the way he wanted to be set free. It just hurts knowing I cant talk to my best friend. I feel like I lost a big part of my soul that day. I dont know what I'm doing anymore n dont know how to deal with it. Everyday just leads to more questions for myself with no answers I wish we could have done more together but I'll cherish our memories I miss you dad n I love you.
Sorry to hear that. Chin up bud, I bet you have some great memories and he does too. Answers are tough to find by yourself, talk and speak out to people you know as much as you can, you're gonna be fine 🤘
I recommend Alan Watts. Random quote: Give me the release of death and I'll give u the joy of life. When we die we tend to realize too late what life is. It's a ride. We can get anything we want out of it. So get the most u can while it lasts. Death gives life meaning. There's no life without death. No pain without pleasure. Up, down, black, white, etc, come into existence mutually and aren't as separate as one may think. It's like a yin yang symbol. It's all one thing with many features. Death implies life and vice versa. Good luck with everything and I'm sorry u lost someone so close to u. Peace.
Everything thing leads to more questions bud. The only question I have for you is did you enjoy the time you had with him? You can let the past destroy your present and future. I know I have from shit that I was unable to control, but I'm finally starting to realize nothing is cut n dry. It hits the hardest when you lose someone important, but you can be proud of him for going out on his own terms. And for that I say hey man nice shot. Life is pain and the people we love r never around long enough
Everything you need to get through this can be found in the Bible. Find chapters that speak to you and read everyday. I hope that you find the peace of God that surpasses all understanding.
RIP the two members of Alice in Chains Mike Starr (April 4, 1966 - March 8, 2011), aged 44 Layne Staley (August 22, 1967 - April 5, 2002), aged 34 You both will be remembered as legends.
It's not even him in this video I don't think. This is Mike Inez. Starr was fired for selling tix in the parking lot at the van Halen tour to support his habit. Poor guy made a horrible mistake.
I owe everything to this song. It helped pull me out of depression twice. One of the deepest and heartfelt songs I've ever heard and I can completely relate to this.
Layne lost his life to his demons in 2002 and Mike ultimately lost his life as well a decade later in 2011. But they have left behind some awesome music.
No Layne lost his life because he did a speedball, very dangerous combo. He did to much for his body to handle and he died. His death was an overdose, but an accidental overdose.
This song, and nutshell will always be my favorites. His voice singing lyrics that sounded like a script of my life, reminded me I wasn't alone going through these things. Lanes voice was and always will be one of the voices that got me through my worst days, and a voice that was like a familiar friend I unfortunately never got to meet. That's what his music was to me. Anybody else?
Layne Staley. You will always have a special place in my heart. I can’t stop thinking about the tragic way you left this world it’s absolutely haunting. Such an extraordinary man and I will always love you and how amazing you were. I’m sorry you had to leave us
There is an interview where Mike McCready talks about how powerful and resonant his voice was. His voice really boomed from his chest and could be heard over all the noise backstage (apparently backstage is very noisy due to equipment).
He is the definition of ICON. Mr Layne Staley.....RIP u will forever be missed and never forgotten through days in which we celebrate our special and oh so talented friend and lest not we forget how powerful his gifts were!!
I just can't get how AIC finds direct way into my soul. I'm from totaly different country, with totally different environment - there are no certain points in my life that their music can relate to. I've never been an addict and I can't say that there was something in my past that broke me. Though life is a hard thing even without dramatic moments in it. It just amazes me how every AIC song echoes in my soul, so I can see the whole picture, the real meaning they wanted to deliver (I want to believe in that). Usually you're hooked with the music you used to listen they you were a teen (13-20yo). I've discovered AIC later (around 24-25) and they stroke me really deep so I can't compare to any other band who influenced me more. I truely believe Layne is the most significan vocalist at least in rock/metal music, the whole band itself sadly is most underrated - AIC deserves way more respect and attention. Their legacy is invaluable, their music is true masterpiece.
I read your first sentence only, It's because music is internal. Origin and , damn I want so much to speak about this but my mind won't allow me . Music rules , will sum it up
Didn't get into the hall of fame this year! Yes, totally under appreciated. They never mentioned Layne at the Grammy's the year after he died. Such bullshit!
If you're experiencing any darkness right now, please understand. It CAN get better than this. You can crawl out of this hole. There are services available, and people who would miss you! Don't give up.
@@Archangel82 bro stay strong. My story is somewhat similar. I came from a dope house as a kid and was given all kinds of stuff when I was too young and have been a addict for 3/4 my life. Frankly I hate myself and want to die and don't know how I made it this far. I only stick around now for my son. Life's a bitch but it has it's good moments. I hope the best for you man just keep your chin up and if you need someone to talk to I can listen. You aren't alone.
+JA SL Wow !!!so amazing 14 years ago. So amazing howtime flashes by. Life is what it is enjoy it while you have it. Past present and future. Amazing crazy shit happens. I chose to smile. Enjoy it while you have it. Be kind to others . Go out with a smile. When it is your natural time to go. Until then enjoy life to the fkn MAX!!. Be WELL BE FINE Be KIND .
So next year will be 15 years and also Layne's 50th! It would be a good time to visit Seattle... I bet a lot of tributes and parties in Layne's memory. Gotta fine a friend who will make the trip with me.
Laynes vocals are haunting. His voice is soothing yet theres a strong sense of dispair it imparts on the listener. It always makes me feel a strong sadness but in a good way. RIP Layne
Sometimes I get out of myself and feel a little better like at least I'm not alone in my pain and morbid feelings. But then again they're all almost gone now and I kinda wanna go too sometimes,... sometimes I do😔 I've been clean for quite some time now but I'm also in a great deal of pain for quite a few years & wondering how much more I can actually take❣🕊🥀😢Love u Layne Thank You for giving me a sense of belonging in my young adult life not sure where I'd be otherwise❤ R.I.P. Legend😘
Sean did a really good job with the drums on this song. This is one of my favorite performances of his. Incredibly underrated drummer, and probably overshadowed by a once in a generation guitarist and a once in a lifetime singer.
Listening to Alice in chains in 2022 gives me flashbacks to the 90'S as a teenager, man i miss the 90's! truely was the best decade for grunge and all music genres

Bury me softly in this womb
I give this part of me for you
Sand rains down and here I sit
Holding rare flowers in a tomb, in bloom
Down in a hole
And I don't know if I can be saved
See my heart, I decorate it like a grave
You don't understand who they thought
I was supposed to be
Look at me now a man
Who won't let himself be
Down in a hole, feelin' so small
Down in a hole, losin' my soul
I'd like to fly
But my wings have been so denied
Down in a hole
And they've put all the stones in their place
I've eaten the sun so my tongue
Has been burned of the taste
I have been guilty of kicking myself in the teeth
I will speak no more of my feelings beneath
Down in a hole, feelin' so small
Down in a hole, losin' my soul
I'd like to fly
But my wings have been so denied
Bury me softly in this womb (oh I wanna be inside of you)
I give this part of me for you (oh I wanna be inside of you)
Sand rains down and here I sit (oh I wanna be inside of you)
Holding rare flowers in a tomb (oh I wanna be inside)
Down in a hole, feelin' so small

Down in a hole, feelin' so small
Down in a hole, out of control
I'd like to fly
But my wings have been so denied

What I love about Alice In Chains is that they transcend the metal, grunge and alt rock genres. Truly an amazing band.
Alice In Chains is the metal of grunge
I love that 30 years later we’re all still here talking about how amazing they are. It’s time they get inducted into the RRHOF. Legends.
Alice ln Chains 💜💜💜💜☺️

Because they actually had real talent.
The best grunge band ever. I miss Layne Staley's voice. This song was about Layne's Heroin addiction.
Layne is a lost treasure for sure. I just wish he knew how much his words, his voice and his talent meant and still means to the world.
não compare AIC com esse lixo vazio que é o gojira

It’s good to take care of your loved ones. Absolutely. However, live for yourself. Get out there bro!
Prayers for you, and sending love -
Bless your mother
I don’t think people realize how much Jerry Cantrell’s singing harmonies makes Alice In Chains work so hard-core vocally
Agreed!
Also co-wrote songs, such as down in a hole. About a break up Jerry had
True. I still only like hearing them sing together though.
Together without a doubt ..best ever
Underrated Foreal this makes me nostalgic
As a guy suffering from phases of depression and low sef-esteem, this song brings me to tears. And as ironic as it sounds: It's a damn great feeling and it helps a lot.
jerry wrote this about his x girlfriend at the time
People with depression can relate to the feelings and phrases these songs bring to us . It's a weird feeling having music that can depress you but uplift or at least help you understand your not alone

How can something be so heavy, so dark, yet so beautiful at the same time?
Because its played by masters
Because it soothes your heart and soul with expressions, undertones and understandings of pain. I'm also a Good Guy who lives with the Pain of My Life Experiences and Daily Stress, Anxiety and Depression. I'm a Rock Singer as well and I'm learning to sing as much AIC as I can. Because of Layne,Jerry,Sean and Mike
Perhaps because it's relatable. This song always felt like a long, warm hug to me.
Very well said. I wonder the same things. River of deceit makes me think this too.
This is a true story:
When I was 18, we said goodbye to Layne, and I was really sad.
Thats awesome. Stay strong man.
That's awesome! I got clean at 19. I am 52 with many grandchildren now. You can do it! You deserve a beautiful life!!! 🤗

There is a BIG difference between a player and a musician.
yearginclarke this kind of stuff channels through from somewhere else. Absolutely amazing
@@jordandedomusic I totally agree. Hendrix was another one I really admire for his ability to channel feelings into his playing. Many people have described his live playing as a force of nature when he was on top of his game.
The vocal harmonies are INSANELY GOOD
I honestly think Alice In Chains have the best vocal harmonies since the Beatles. They're that good.
@@robwalsh9843 I think after aic for harmonies soad is pretty cool
I know. They meld into a single voice it seems at times but at other times you can hear them distinctly apart. The best in a long time.
Vocal harmonies??
It’s what sets them apart. They do their own vocals and harmonies; they bring in no ringers. So amazing. It’s one of Layne’s best performances imo. It’s one of their very best songs.

This is “art” rock to me, everything about this song is pure musical genius. From lyrical content, harmonies, melodies, transitions this is one of the most artistically composed songs from the grunge era. This band was something special.

Well put
You are not lying. There is something transcendent about this song. A beautiful combination of things I can't explain.

I've eaten the sun so my tongue has been burn of the taste
This line send me chills up and down mi body
I really feel touched reading your comment, you know, this kind of honesty is what i find lacking in this world right now. I hope you can get to the end of your addiction :).
This song is absolutely beautiful and sincere. My favorite line is 'I have been guilty of kicking myself in the teeth'.
I think you would like the music of Rowland S. Howard, he was a terrific guitarist and also went through addiction.
I send you a hug from Colombia.
Wish u the best bro 🤗
Jimi Hendrix is also my hero and been playing guitar since I was 12 Alice in Chains has an intangible quality like no other Act and the more you hear them the more unworldly they appear... all this being said I have to include I have been making my living playing old school country music for decades but this is what happens in the car on the way to the gig.....
Me to brother,you are stronger

Celine Martin so was kurt
Every year they hold a tribute to AIC at the Showbox. It's pretty cool.
Layne is so beautiful in this video. The melodies are otherworldly.
I feel like this most times loneliness is so bad for a person and I cannot deal with it most days...
We were brought into this world alone and we will die the same way. Sad that it is that way but maybe we can change it
Breaks my heart ☮️ Layne was & is so very much loved 💜 if it only could of been enough ☮️
( I’ve been begging my daughters to name the next baby Layne boy or girl!!
Sad to think that half of these guys are no longer with us. RIP Layne Staley and Mike Starr.
The dog probably bit the dust too. RIP Doggy.
+DerKacktopf really wow
+patrick MURPHY sorry xD
It really breaks my heart! They were taking away so soon and so young!! RIP
The perfect song about depression and self hate, it's so difficult to escape.
perfect way to describe it.
I can feel it. I have depression and anxiety and it's so hard... AIC describes perfectly how I feel right now.

One of the best rock bands of all time.
Nobody...and I mean NOBODY harmonized better than Jerry and Layne. Truly incredible sounds that still hold up over the years and always will....
Geoff Adam to this day it still gives me chills
Thats a true statement...people in the rick community knew that too😊
Serj Tankian and Daron Malakian.
They are like Lennon & McCartney harmonics wise ;))
It's lower 5th harmonies. First used in pop music by John Lennon and The Beatles
the magic of this song is that it's about a romantic relationship, yet anyone who has ever felt lost in their depression can grasp and truly understand the feeling this song emits. i've never been that emotionally damaged by a romance, but i have been really low and that's where i connect with this song
Same brother
If you see someone hearing this song, please, give him/her a hug.
It's 2022... I'm a 60 Year old woman...how did I let this group pass me by....I can't get enough of listening to them 💯
Awesome!
Welcome🤘🏼
Better late than never
I’m 71 and just discovered them about 3 years ago... I feel ya...
Underrated? lol they were big in the 90s lmao
@@BeanerMoney went on tour with metallica...
Thank you 🙏🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
That's good hope it helps you😊
Recently lost my best friend (who was 33). AIC was his favorite band (and one of mine too), and this song in particular has helped me a lot too. Hope you're doing well.
This is music from the heart. Rest in peace Layne.
Every once in awhile I need a dose of Layne. Tears right now for him. Miss this band so fucking much! This guy got me through my Heroin addiction. Will always be grateful.
Cameron Rice my heroin addiction and mom's death. My stillborn son that I actually named Layne
This song was written by Cantrell not Layne. It's not about addiction.
01EvangelionUnit I don't believe anyone actually said it was. We were just talking about Layne and our relatable struggles.
This is one of the best Alice In Chains songs, no doubt about it
At some point in my life I was depressed.
Same for me and wake up
2021 is already here and this song still stood the test of time!🤘🏼
Right on! Their music is phenomenal and nothing compares! My all time favorite band!

There are good songs, then there are songs like this. Written from pure pain and emotion. This will never, ever get old.
You took the words right out of my mouth. I listen to this song at least 2-3 times every week.
Wow good stuff now this is comment worth 4k likes
It's humans being human. Life.

Old.
Keep on rocking Shelley the world needs you and soon your wings won't be denied!!
Layne will keep on singing up there.Alice in chains will never be forgotten as well as the Grunge genre.this is the music i listn to when i feel like taking off the steam
Haven’t heard a voice like his since! So unique. So much emotion. Still can’t stop listening at 43!! Over 25 years!!

Oh yeah
Same here. So glad I grew up when I did and got to be a part of this generation.
@@CarolinaFarming Oh fudge right off
Jerry's lyrics and guitar with laynes voice....masterpiece
language in general is unusual
Was that meant to be passive aggressive?? You do know that Layne wrote most of the lyrics?? He wrote a few songs but he's not JUST A VOCALIST
No doubt ...Favourite Chains song
RIP the two members of Alice in Chains
Mike Starr (April 4, 1966 - March 8, 2011), aged 44
Layne Staley (August 22, 1967 - April 5, 2002), aged 34
You both will be remembered as legends.
This is a good depression song love I'm always emotional this is my escape 🤘✌️🌻🔥
I love Layne Staley
I almost thought Mike made it out. Sadly I was wrong.
It's not even him in this video I don't think. This is Mike Inez. Starr was fired for selling tix in the parking lot at the van Halen tour to support his habit. Poor guy made a horrible mistake.
RIP 🙏 you missed 🙏
20 years of listening Alice in chains and i still cant get enough. Every day, one song at least...
Jerry Cantrell Afterglow.. new song. Sounds like hes in the u district in seattle.
I only recently found alice in chains and I've genuinely fallen in love. Such amazing music

Layne's voice is angelical in this one. Plus Layne and Jerry's harmony 🙌. Thanks AIC.
I owe everything to this song. It helped pull me out of depression twice. One of the deepest and heartfelt songs I've ever heard and I can completely relate to this.

Passando para te parabenizar pela pró-atividade e pelos seus resultados. Que Deus continue te abençoando.

Layne Staley. You will always have a special place in my heart. I can’t stop thinking about the tragic way you left this world it’s absolutely haunting. Such an extraordinary man and I will always love you and how amazing you were. I’m sorry you had to leave us
I've never heard a voice like this before it's like his voice echoes even when he's not singing, he was truly one of a kind.
Kane C yeah, he was.
There is an interview where Mike McCready talks about how powerful and resonant his voice was. His voice really boomed from his chest and could be heard over all the noise backstage (apparently backstage is very noisy due to equipment).

Lane Staley will forever be missed. And iconic musician with an iconic sound.
An Icon darling...he's the meaning of the word, iTs why old people get mad when youngsters use the word Icon..now it's lost its meaning lol
He is the definition of ICON. Mr Layne Staley.....RIP u will forever be missed and never forgotten through days in which we celebrate our special and oh so talented friend and lest not we forget how powerful his gifts were!!
Jarass?
Layne's voice was blessed to touch people. He shared his talent and we embraced it. He was truly a special gift to us all.🌹
I read your first sentence only, It's because music is internal. Origin and , damn I want so much to speak about this but my mind won't allow me . Music rules , will sum it up

Not really, this band has a lot of fans and they were one of the most appreciated bands from the 90's.
Didn't get into the hall of fame this year! Yes, totally under appreciated. They never mentioned Layne at the Grammy's the year after he died. Such bullshit!
One of the most unique voices to ever be on this planet.
