Coming from 3DS Max/Vray, I was so surpirsed that Blender didn't have this feature. Awesome to see it finally got added.
Me too i work with 3ds max abd vray since 2010 , and light exclud/includ options with specular reflection refraction shadow crusual to mee happy to see it in blender
yeah, blender is a bit behind on a lot of useful features. something that i find mindblowing is that adaptive displacement ( like V-Ray displacement mod) is still an experimental feature ?!?!?!?!?!?! that should have been the most importnat thing to refine for cycles if it's aim is to be production ready. And if we compare it to Fstorm for example, where render time displacement generated billions of poly's for almost no memory footprint at all it's just ridiculous.
literally the only thing I was missing from Lightwave was this type of lighting setup. happy.
The feature itself is not insane. The fact that it wasn't available in Blender for so long is insane.
Very true, i used in maya for 20+ years :)
They add a new simple feature in Blender and these zealots act like it's the best thing since sliced bread. Meanwhile other applications have it. The overhyping of blender on social media is super cringe.
I always found both pro and anti blender users very annoying, they lack any form of objectivism. Some consider blender the coming of Christ, others go NPC mode "industry standard and blablabla", even denying the giant steps blender made since 2.8. Blender vs Maya or quads Vs ngons are both cancer topics, some people base their whole identity on a software or a specific workflow.
If you're not into geo nodes, light linking has got to be the most groundbreaking Blender change since forever. I've already used it in two projects, and the effects you can get with it are night & day compared to the way things were before. Diffuse and glossy are so much better now too!
Ryu, as someone with extensive photography skills, I'd love to see your take on AgX. Have you started using it when rendering? Do you prefer it to Filmic now, or are there still situations where you find Filmic better?
Being a photographer this is probably one of the most game changing settings in blender to really fine tune the lighting in a scene man, thanks for the tip cheers
Yes, this is a god send. No more complex compositor+scene setups to achieve this.
Thanks man, that was very informational.
interesting way to make a plane for the rover
thank you very handy feature, you can sort of do this in 3dsmax, I am 50% through your free Hard surface Tutorial also, it is awesome, thanks for your help guys
Wow. Thank xo much 🎉
Like the Light Exclude feature in other programs, I remember needing a similar feature for Vray when using Cinema 4D and 3dsmax. I thought this feature was previously available in Blender. But since I started using Blender I haven't needed it. This video reminded me of a tip I forgot, thank you.
I don’t think people will watch your video if you don’t give a hint in the title or thumbnail, to what the topic is about..
I would have skipped it, if you wasn’t in my subscriptions.. Just saying to help out.. Mysterious titles are fine, and they are necessary. But give a hint. Is it for animation? Modeling? Rendering? Something. I need to know if it’s relevant for me before clicking and spending my very limited amount of time I have.
I’m not negative, and sorry if I sound that way.. Since I have subscribed to you, I KNOW, that you make good content, so I will watch the video later on.. 🙂
It is good that blender finally added light and shadow linking, but it bothers me greatly that the HDRIs can not be controlled in the same way
Dope!
Cool!!
its true. Light linking is a very nice and pow. tool.
Cool!)
I'm going to get an insane amouint of hate for this, but this is another example of modern Blender's absolutely idiotic idea of what constitutes Good UI design. Panels within panels within panels within panels. There are panels and subpanels all over the place that only have one checkbox in it. Why? In this example, we have a light linking sub panel and a shadow linking sub panel. There should be one sub panel that has two checkboxes per object. One checkbox to turn the lights on and off, and one for the shadows.
The amount of time I spend opening and closing panels looking for the option I want is driving me nuts, and I can't even add a principled shader without having to constantly open and close panels to get to features I want.
truth
No, you're right. Light linking is AWESOME, but the implementation is too convoluted. It should be a one-click command or something and definitely not hidden in the object property tab of all places.
2.8+ UI is simple as hell, you just need to know what to ignore, watch our free course linked in the vid description - it will teach you whats essential
Writing light linking is not trivial for a gpu pathtracer
