The song appeared on their debut album Against the Grain (retitled Sweet City Woman in the U.S.). The song features a banjo as a primary instrument, which is also mentioned in the lyrics: "The banjo and me, we got a feel for singing." The single spent four weeks as a #1 hit in Canada, and reached #8 in the U.S. charts. It also climbed to #1 on the Canadian country music and Adult contemporary charts. The band and song won numerous Juno Awards in 1972, including Best Single, Songwriter of the Year (guitarist Rich Dodson), Record Producer of the Year (Mel Shaw), and the band was named Canada's Top Group.
Lyrics:
Sweet City Woman (R. Dodson / Bell Records)
Well, I'm on my way
To the city lights
To the pretty face that shines her light
On the city nights
And I gotta catch a noon train
I gotta be there on time
Oh it feels so good to know she waits
At the end of the line
Sweet, sweet city woman
I can see your face, I can hear your voice
I can almost touch you
Sweet, sweet city woman
Oh my banjo and me
We got a feel for singing, yeah, yeah
Bon, ci bon, bon, bon, ci bon, bon
Bon, ci bon, bon, bon, bon, bon
Bon, ci bon, bon, bon, ci bon, bon
Bon, ci bon, bon, bon, bon, bon
So long Ma, so long Pa
So long neighbours and friends
Like a country morning
All smothered in dew
She's got a way to make a man
Feel shiny and new
And she'll sing in the evening
Old familiar tunes
And she feeds me love and tenderness
And macaroons
Sweet, sweet city woman
Oh my sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet city woman
Sweet, sweet city woman
Oh my sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet city woman - Видеоклипы
When this song first came out my baby brother used to play it over and over it drove me nuts........he passed last year and I would give anything to see his big grin playing this one more time. I love you Buck RIP

It sounds way better in heaven.
Great song good ,taste RIP Buck!!
Great song I'll gladly play it for your brother 😊RiP""
Awww. so sorry to hear that, my friend. He's still listening when you play it and still grinning from ear to ear. I'm sure you have great memories.
In 1971 I was raising my two toddlers by myself. And I remember singing this song right along with them. I'm 70 years old now and still remember every word!❤❤
I was 65 when this came out in 1971. I'm 115 now and still listening and loving it. Song never gets old.
LoL. Wait until you are 65, you'll be saying the same about what you listened to as a teenager. It's not the music, it's the memories the music brings back.
Are you the oldest man in the world?
Edit: Save your energy! I just checked, and you ARE the oldest man in the world. And you only have to get to 116 years and 55 days and you'll be the oldest man of all time.

Got me beat. I turned 103 late last May.
@@macyr2216 AMEN! It's great when the memories come flooding back when you hear an oldie but a goodie.
Oh, my god. I was 19 in 1971. Not an ache or a pain anywhere; just the firm belief that I would literally be young forever. Such a wonderful memory from a time when the world was very different.
I was 3. I grew up with this music. Thank the gods... today's "music" is crap!
Ahh; the sweet illusions of youth....

Awesome song. I was 18 when this came out. Had my brand new 71 super b with 383 magnum with 4 speed hurst pistol grip. Cruising with the windows open n tunes cranked lol. We had the best cars, best hair, best music of any generation. Plus the freedom. Awesome times
Generation X kid here, born June 18 1967. Loved the 1970's! Hello from Tyler Texas U.S.A.
The best of everything..amen brothers...
"And she feeds me love and tenderness and macaroons..." I love those lyrics. Such a great song. Way to represent Canada!
Ah, so *that's* why I hear a bit of French in the "bom si bom, bom-bom-si bom bom... ? 😊
Never realized those were the lyrics! I always sang it ".. tenderness all the night through" 😅
But in my defense I wouldn't be introduced to macaroons for another 30 yrs.
Sad the PM is communist.
Canada always rocks 🤘

He is so good he is playing the banjo and lead guitar parts simultaneously. Without a banjo no less.
Yeah, I hear a tenor banjo, but . . .
One of his guitars must be tuned to banjo.
Amazing how he sneaks that lead lick, deee deedledeedle dee in while he swats rhythm too I love the song anyway. From way back when I could get away with running down the street wearing nothing but a grin and all the ladies called it cute, Dee deedle deedle dee!
The hidden banjo foot peddle, pure showmanship mastery
I love it!
I was 10 yrs. old when this debuted, still not tired of it, still gives me shivers... miss those times & the music.

Just another great 3 piece Canadian band bringing that sweet city woman swag. Beautiful time to be alive!
My how quickly time passes. I was 16 years old when this song came out and now I’m 68 and getting ready to retire. We had the best music in the 60s and 70s.
Same as me wonder where the years have gone. 68 years old now same age my dad passed. Even after all these years still miss him also my mum who passed later.
Reminder of a kinder, gentler era. So full of hope and possibilities.

These guys are still touring Canada on the strength of this hit. I kid you not.
They had a few hits, but this was their bread and butter.
Richard Thorpe this whole album is great! I have it and play it often.
Richard Thorpe, good for them.
All you need is one hit if you do it well and it’s big enough you are set

These guys harmonize so good! Brings back memories for sure!
Seriously one of the greatest pop songs ever. Still sounds fresh and unique after all this time. And with wonderful, simple, yet deeply personal and touching lyrics - "and she feeds me love and tenderness and macaroons". Beautiful. And I don't even like macaroons.
84 now and still playing this song that brings nostapgia of all the things I could do then, physically, mentally, my workplace and all my friends....Ahh the memories the song provokes!
I agree. This is a gem. Back in '71 I was in high school and there was a girl I was going around with who became, for me, the sweet city woman they were singing about. She still is that, in my memory, although she and I both went our separate ways.

I was going to community college back in ‘73 in Bridgewater ,Nova Scotia when the Stampeders did a concert. It was amazing that 3 men could make such great music with none of the electronic trickery that bands use today. You don’t have to be talented, just have the right audio equipment. Long live pure music.
My heart and my memories thank you!!!

Oh yeah, a great old tune. I have a lot of songs they could use in those movies, the 70's were just awesome.
I remember this playing on the radio way back in 1971 I will always love this tune I was just a tot
One of the best and most overlooked bands. Very few have ever even heard of them.
I know a lot of music particularly from then completely forgot their name was The Stampeders wouldn't of guessed for a million dollars and I can name obscure songs no one has heard of or remembers and one hit wonders.
They played at my high school in Barrie Ontario I’m glad I was able to go see it I love that song and many of their other songs long ago and not forgotten
That's because they haven't been on the scene for decades; it kinda stands to reason, don't you think? Also; they only had one song that was good enough for radio play. It's all very elementary.
@@ToyotaGuy1971 Wild Eyes, Ramona, Carry Me, Devil You, to name a few more, and Hit the Road Jack. It wasn’t theirs but like all the others it got radio play too.
Never heard of them because they didn't get much mainstream-airplay as I basically said.

Yes, and continuing through high school and a 20-year military career being airborne, it's felt at times. However, I'm extremely healthy after the fact.
I FRICKIN' love the banjo in this song. Fell in love instantly.
Love it; can't see it.
Actually there's no banjo in the band at all. He so good with his guitar, a double neck that he can pull off the banjo sound. Not bad at all.
Just another GREAT song from the 70's what a time to be alive and live it all.
While my family was down at my Aunt & Uncle's home in Virginia. All of us were having a barbecue
and getting into some AWESOME music. One of my uncle's friends came over with his family and was
having a great time with us. My uncle played a few songs and we were watching him and his family
dance in which they were very good!!! He asked my uncle and aunt if we could dance. They Replied
" You haven't seen anything YET"!!! I had my uncle play this and my mother's eyes lit up and she started
to cry!! Then my sisters all got FIRED UP!!! My aunt Rose then said, " Watch this family in ACTION"!!!
All of us got up and got in the middle of the patio and DESTROYED IT!!!! My aunt Rose soon had tears
in her eyes as well!! My energy level went TOTALLY NUCLEAR!!! It felt so GOOD!!! My girlfriend Debbie
started to cry and SCREAMED in delight!!!!! Everyone else was in shock watching us BLOW UP the Patio
and put on a dance CLINIC!!!! We got done and my mother kissed and hugged us, so did my Aunt Rose
Then she thanked me for playing this song. My uncle told his friend, " My sister& her family can dance like
no one ELSE!!! My nieces and my nephew put their hearts and souls into their dancing!!! These kids are the
REAL DEAL!!!! My aunt said, " Every time I see these kids dance, I see nothing but LOVE and INTENSITY"!!
especially out of my nephew!!! My aunt Rose then said, " These kids show so much love for each other
when they dance together. That kind of love shows how much they LOVE me and their mother!!! We are
SO PROUD of these Kids!!! They are TRULY SPECIAL!!!!

Pretty cool how the dude can play the banjo and electric guitar at the same time. That's talent right there.
its all lip synced. what we hear is the studio song. its not a live performance
KRUSTYskates right, a live version probably would sound like crap. The studio version is always better.
+davejss You'd be amazed at how many RUclips viewers who think this they are actually singing this live.
+scdevon I'm awash with memories of Merv Griffin, Mike Douglas and bands playing electric instruments without being plugged in. Funny how the song on TV always sounds like the record (oh yes, record). I think live performance was limited to Don Kirshner's Rock Concert and occasionally on the short-lived Wolfman Jack's Midnite Special.

Ain't that the truth, my friend!
This was a great song I've love and miss the 70's
You can pick any decade prior to this one and it would be much better.
This is one of my "Summer songs"; ie - songs that remind me of summer and I like to hear during summertime for that "feel good" feeling.
In the warm, sunny, summer of '71, borrowed my dad's '67 blue, convertible, Mustang with the top down. Picked up my girlfriend, she was wearing jean shorts, a breezy top, and sandals. We drove around all afternoon just to drive under the sun. Visiting the parks, friends, and the ice cream stand.
She loved to have the breeze blowing through her blonde hair and the sun on her face.
Finally, we headed to A&W for Papa burger, Mama burger, onion rings, and icy cold frosty A&W root beer. We sat and ate our food, this song playing on the car radio, Laura standing up in the car, singing at the top of her voice until other people in their cars couldn't help but join in with her infectious nature. Loved Laura.
