This video is a strong argument for becoming a patreon. I love the helpful tid bits from shorter videos, but nothing beats watching someone pain stakingly work through 'the ugly layers' in real-ish time. It's not only more helpful, but a huge morale boost. I'm gonna go sign up, like a gym membership for art skills. Thank you Lisa!
This is so interesting, I was just going to buy the powder blender but after watching this I have all the products in my cart LOL! Stunning work Lisa! Great info too!
You prolly dont care but does anyone know of a way to log back into an instagram account?? I was dumb forgot the login password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me!
@Cairo Yehuda thanks so much for your reply. I found the site thru google and im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
This is one of your best tutorials ever, Lisa. You answered so many of my questions regarding cp and the powder blender kit. A great project to try too, just to get acquainted with the process. It seems to take all the stress out of creating a piece of work that you can always correct mistakes or simply just change your mind. Thank You.
I'm glad you liked it! It really is a lot less stressful working with powder blender. I love the ability to fix things or just completely change my mind and make big changes :D
I'm so glad you always remind people that getting the values right is so much more important than colour-matching. My fiance is always getting on me, saying things like "oh you didn't do that lantern the right shade of blue". I always tell her it really isn't that important and that values are what really create realism but she thinks I'm just totally wrong on that. Also I like how you tell us about all your mistakes so we don't have to make the same ones. Most artists on youtube don't do that, they'll do things like cut the part out of the video where they made the mistake, and they definitely don't list the mistakes they make on each project. Thanks for your honesty and your helpfulness! :-)
Outstanding video Lisa, Alyona sent me a set of the powder blender kit after I done a job for her and I have been trying lots of different combinations with UART paper from 400 - 800 papers and various pencils from Pablos, ProColour, Polychromos and Derwent Artists, which I know a lot of people hate but with this method, the Derwent Artist pencils are amazing because they are such a hard core and not packed with pigment so layering is a dream. However, as I am an idiot, I have been doing lots of things wrong and not getting the results as I hoped for. I have to say, I find it difficult using sanded paper, especially if I am working in the living room and my wife is trying to watch TV, I swear she is going to ninja snap my neck one night because of the noise from the pencil on the sanded paper, lol. Any way excellent excellent video and I have certainly picked up so many tips and ideas from you thank you.
Lachri Fine Art thank you Lisa, I now have apple juice running out of my nose from taking a drink just as your reply came in and laughing my head off. I just pictured me behind a fence making as much noise as I like with my wife losing her mind and not being able to get to me lol. I have to say my wife is actually really placid, I’m making her out to be a mad lunatic, which she becomes when I start using sanded paper, but any other time she is the most gentle soul, which makes it all the more funny. Thank you Lisa, I’ve not had a good laugh in ages, now I’m drowning in apple juice.
I work a summer job that my pay cut is dependent on how much we sell in the 2 weeks we are open - this year, for the first time in 50 years, we sold out. Of everything. All items. I have a bigger than normal pay cut this year and so far I've spent so much on just art supplies! A big portion of it is due to your videos! I already had mostly everything I needed for watercolor and oil but I wanted to get into colored pencils and I've ordered a 60 set of Prismacolor, 120 set of Polychromos, and even a 120set of faber-castell watercolor pencils(more because I like watercolor haha)...I ordered the blended set to try it out since you were saying it's more like oil or pastels and I feel like that may be more up my alley than prismacolor. I'm so glad this year worked out for me money wise others I'd be itching to try these without being able to! This video is SO HELPFUL.
I have used this product and pan pastel with the Spectrafix fixative. They’re both VERY good, but I find pan pastel even simpler and faster. For anyone that’s new to this, Archival Lux paper has just come out and was designed to use with the brush and pencil products. It is the very best paper to use with colored pencil. The colors come out incredibly vibrant.
Fantastic video! Well explained with this medium. I have just purchased the Polychromos, sanded paper, powder and textured spray, as yet not used them. It wasn’t easy to get the spray here in Australia but eventually I have it. You have inspired me to start a project after watching this. Thank you so much
Thank you for such an in-depth tutorial. I love how you reiterate that color is not as important as tone or value of color. Thanks for sharing this video 😁💖💖👏👏.
Lisa, this was a great video to cover the work with the Powder Blender product. Thank you for taking the time to go through all this. Thanks for what you do. . . . .You do great. . Glad it has warmed up a little in our part of the country.
I’ve never heard of powder blender. I’m loving your videos. I’m wishing my art instructor almost 30 years ago had a teaching style like yours. You are not condescending, nor are you rigid. I might have stayed in art school. But I’m getting back into it now, and your vids are so helpful! I would love to know what you seal your colored pencil art with, I’m not sure I’ve heard on any vids yet. Thank you so much for sharing with us.
I recently bought the powder blender kit, intending to use gessoed paper, since I was going to use the product for illustration and continually buying sanded paper is just not an option for my budget right now. However I'm having trouble getting the consistency and layers of gesso right, so I decided I would buy a pack of UART500 papers, and get a feel for the blender on them, and then go back to my experiments with the gesso.
THIS is so helpful......I have about giving up on liking powder blender, but I used the wrong pencils right off the bat. Going to try ONE more time ...Thank you!!
I love the tracing paper method to transfer the sketch. If you don't mind the image being backwards... a bone tool or blunt tool can be used to rub the image straight from the tracing paper to the final without the second round of tracing. It only works once, till the graphite is gone.
Hi Lisa! I hope your move into your new home is going well. Yep, this is the first time I've ever watched this video of yours. Thanks SO much for doing it! I just ordered some powdered blender and look forward to trying it out. I also ordered some of the Uart sanded paper you suggested. I've got my new Polychromos pencils too! So, I'm looking forward to diving into a new medium (for me)! I haven't been doing much painting at all for like 6 months. I haven't been into it at all, since my little shih tzu, Merlin, got really sick and died a few months ago. I'm just heart-broken over it. You probably don't remember, but you critiqued a painting I did of him, I think it was last year. Anyway, I am finally starting to feel a bit like creating art again. I really appreciate having your videos to help me learn how to use colored pencils.
I love your channel and you have inspired me to reach my full potential and to switch from cartoons to realistic. Not only have you helped be tremendouslay but you have helped me learn how to teach my friends. I love how fast you talk because you are the one RUclipsr that I can understand :D Love ur channel!
Wow...respect for your patience, I think I had already caught the pan pastels for the background whaha but i understand (think) that this is a advertisement video for this product? I have ordered the texture fixative yesterday and will try this myself . Thanx for your explanation about it. Greetings from Julia The Netherlands
Pan pastels were not used. She used oil based polychromos pencils with a powdered blender you will need more than just the workable fixative. You need the powder blender as well.
I finely got thru the video, not that it was too long, just that it covered so much needed info. Can't wait for my Power blender supplies to arrive so that I can give it a go. Many thanks for the amazing video and also for your wonderful responses to the questions from all of us.
Lisa, you're an amazingly talented artist! I can't tell you how excited I am about the new Powder Blender products. You have inspired me so dramatically I can't wait to get started. I ordered all the components for the Powder Blender techniques. I ordered about 15 sheets of sanded paper before hearing you talk about ProPanels. When you were talking about the ProPanels you quickly mentioned that you used to permanently affix your sanded paper to a board. So, how do you adhere the single sheets to a board? Would you please explain how you did this? What kind of adhesive (liquid, dry, film) and what kind of board (type, density, etc)? I'm going to have to do this with the sanded paper I already purchased. Thanks,Beth Ross PS. I've joined your Patreon; so looking forward to watching you work....A lot!! YAY!
The tape I used was given to me to try by the creator of this product. If you contact Brushandpencil.com they can tell you what they recommend for that :) It didn't have a label on it so I have no idea which one I used.
Great video, but I don't think I will start up another hobby with colored pencils lol. Acrylic painting is enough for me. I do enjoy watching the process. Beautiful work!
Amazing video... I didn't know powder blender existed. It looks like a revolutionary product for pencils. I want to experiment with acrylic gesso'ed paper and see how it behaves.
hello, thank you for your video. I use Spectrafix with Pastel, can I use it instead of the texture fixative when using powder blender? Thanks for letting me know.
When I plan on using transfer paper, I draw the original in one color, then use a different color for the transfer, so I can tell what lines I've already done.
How beautiful this is…I would like to try this too. I’m looking for the reference photo but I can’t find it through the link in the info. How can I find this?
Loving this, Also have you made changes to your style and layout of the program it feels, fresh and your engaging on a new level. i love the lights in the background to. Awesome work and your advise is so upbeat . thank you
Thank you for this!!! I’m so glad your back! I missed you!! I learn so much from you!! I started my first project with powder blender a few days ago - a sea turtle - this video is really helpful!! 😊👍
Lachri, have you thought to try using the powder blender with a soft fluffy brush, maybe like the mop brush you use to blend acrylics? I'm just curious what kind of effect that would give.
Hello Lisa... thank you for this video! Its very helpfull. I have a question. Can you use the texture fixative on its own, just to ad texture to a project on normal paper for colored pencil?
I've actually not tried that yet. I have used just the touch up texture (the one in the little nail polish bottle) on other projects though and it was amazing :D
This is stunningly beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing your talent and time. I have a question about watercolor pencils vs oil based ones. Since the watercolor pencils can be blended with water without need for special powders or harmful mineral spirits... is there a reason that you prefer to use oil based pencils instead of watercolor pencils?
I just saw a video where someone is using this product on untreated color book paper, is this feasible, or a waste of product and money? Thank you for an answer from anyone.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS!!! I'm basically an acrylic painter so this approach to colored pencils really resonates with me! Thank you so much! I'm not a patreon (yet) and would like this reference picture. Can't get it on your patreon page, so would you please direct me to where I can get it? Thank you sooooo much!
Hi Lisa. This is such a great tutorial. I've done a really detailed Splended wren in Luminance on Fabriano artistico. I Really want to do a bokeh backround but my practice piece was a disaster! What would you suggest for the background please? Thank goodness I watched this again. Thank you so much.
Very interesting! Do you think these products would work well for wildlife and pet portraits? If so, would you consider doing a tutorial on a big cat or a dog?
i know the video is older but i wonder if i can replace the powder blender by using the colorless blender pan pastel? am i way off? let me know. thanks!
This is an awesome video. Just 1 question. If I want to teach a kid and want to get the same effect of blending background and sharp painting in the foreground. If I only use powder blender and not seal it as a kid won’t have patience to set the layers. Can I use only polychrome pencils and powder blender?
New subscriber through Frugal Crafter. This is cool. That background would be amazing for an undersea subject like a lion fish or something bright. Clownfish and anemone. Maybe a jellyfish or seahorse.
Amazing video Lisa I absolutely loved it. Learned so much I am defiantly more interested in this product by the way I think I would want to use it more for smaller pieces just because of the fact its not flexible. That leads me to a question I have been seriously pondering doesn't the fact that its not flexible make it less archival?
I bought sanded paper from dick Blick art. But it’s soooo rough. I mean I can sand wood with it lol. They said it would work with the colorless blender. It works terrible. So many creases showing through and eating up my pencils super fast. I even used my oil based pencils. Should I spray the texture fixative first?
Oh, one more question. I know you say you don’t like pastels, but have you ever tried the pan pastels for background, since you use those tools with it? I’ve been thinking of this since I have little patience. I’ve seen another artist do this and would love other feedback of it!
I got the Uart sanded paper and a small set of polychromos. I watched the tutorial by Alyona and following all the directions, all the blending powder does is to erase the color. What am I doing wrong? Edit, just to let you know, I followed what Lisa said and not Alyona and it works! The issue I was having was that I put down blender first (what Alyona says), I put down color first and it worked.
No way I can say without seeing. If you would like to record a video of yourself working with it so I can see what's wrong, I can make a video showing you how to solve the problem. Email me Lisa at lachri.com if you're interested in doing that.
@@Lachri Thank you foir the offer, but I figured out what I was doing wrong. I was using way too much blending powder and effectively erasig the color pencil rather than blending it. Also Alyona say to put do blending powder firsst, but as you state in this video, you only do that with wax based pencils. I also discovered that you can use any oil based colored pencils (you don't have to use polychromos), you may want to express that in a future video.
@@justjerry1078 oh that's awesome! For the oil based pencils, I've only personally liked the results with polychromos which is why you don't hear me recommending other brands with this product. Can you use others? Sure, but the results aren't equal.
@@Lachri yah, the problem is $200 for colored pencil, it is just not in the budget; getting a pack of the special paper was really stretching it and I have a set of 12 for poloychromos. You may want to do a demo with less expensive products for those who cannot afford the high priced items. I use H&B oil based pencils from Amazon, they are only $40 for a set of 120 and i like the results.
I really do like your art Channel. I am a adult colorist and now I'm thinking about starting to draw what do you think about a beginner using a light box? I like birds and flowers and I don't know how to draw at all I heard about the light box and I thought it was interesting to try it that's inexpensive and it would be like new toy. But I do respect your opinion about the Arts and tell me what do you think about a beginner getting a light box to trace art to learn how to draw?
I've been curious about this stuff. Just recently discovered how fun sanded paper is in general, but I've been just blending with a blending stump. I was wondering what it is you like about the UArt 500 compared to other weights? I got a pack of all the different weights to try them and so far I've tried the 400 and the 800. I liked the 800 a LOT more, felt I could get more detail with the finer grit. I will try the others, just curious what differences you noticed that made you settle on the 500.
Does it matter the type of gesso (acrylic vs regular) you use to prepare your paper? Also do you happen to know if acrylic gloss would work with color pencil? I want to try doing a spray paint color pencil mix media but for spray paint you would use a mixture of gesso and acrylic gloss.
I used liquitex gesso. If you want to do a mixed media with acrylic the acrylic needs to go down first. Its water based, water based cannot be put on top of oil/wax based pencils (or paint) and stay archival. The problem with acrylics though is they are a form of plastic and depending on which type you use or how thick you put the paint down, the surface will be too slick for the colored pencil to stick to. You will have to experiment with that, just remember acrylics can not go on top of the pencils if you're trying to create archival work :D
What type of spray did you use in this video. You didn’t mention it in the name. For your light issue play with your light balance and make sure it’s set to your light type.
Laura, why Pablo pencils at the end? They're oil-based (& yes, great pencils, fantastic blues) Edit: well said about values & color. I would add... Work in charcoal, if you are having coloring issues! If you can't make black & white look good, your coloring won't look good.
I have a question about blending. Why is it you do not mention blending with markers? like grey scale or non color markers for blending? does it change the quality in a bad way? are markers not lightfast? just very curious about your opinion.
Lisa, thank you so much for your videos. Is there a brand name to the texture fixative? (I don’t see it in the list.). It sounds fantastic. I love the idea of the blending powder with the paper and fixative-very exciting.
Hi Lisa. I’m just getting started with colored pencils and have some polychromos. I usually do pastel paintings. I would love to give this a go but cant seem to find the reference you mention that is accessible on your patreon page even if your not a member. Also I have 400 grit uart. Will this work or should I go to a 500? Thanks so much for all the great vids! Love your work. 🥰 PJ
Lisa I love your videos. Question! Do you blow away the Pencil dust before spraying with texture fixative? I didn’t have a good outcome on my first attempt. Trying to figure out where I went wrong. I used 400 grade paper so that could have had something to do with it.
If it's bad I do, but I don't get too much since I work upright. If you're working flat, yes blow off the excess for sure :) They different paper grit will also make a difference :)

Ok no jokes here, this is just an amazing video, the lights, the transitions, just WOW. I don't know what to say, Respect.

Oh I bet that looks really pretty!

Can you use the Pablo pencils with the Polychromos? Aren’t they also oil based pencils? Thanks 😊
How beautiful this is…I would like to try this too. I’m looking for the reference photo but I can’t find it through the link in the info. How can I find this?
Great info and fantastic results. Thank you.
Now if you carry prismacolor or Caranche Luminance, do you a video where you put the blender first?
your videos are so good and in depth!
OOH! I looove sea turtles :D
I love your videos Lisa. I tried the Uart paper with the blender powder. I can't stand working on the rough sanded paper.
Does the blender work on drafting film? Do you have any videos showing what happens when it's used with the Luminance?
Lachri, have you thought to try using the powder blender with a soft fluffy brush, maybe like the mop brush you use to blend acrylics? I'm just curious what kind of effect that would give.
You can for different texture effects, but when I did it I mostly just knocked the pencil pigment off the paper.
Thanks for the video Lisa, looking forward to my supplies arriving so I can give it a try :)
OH! Please post what you create in our group on FB so I can see :D
11:49 okay cool, now it looks like something I would draw
LOL
Hahaha :P why not XD
What is the name of the texture fixative did you use?
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS!!! I'm basically an acrylic painter so this approach to colored pencils really resonates with me! Thank you so much! I'm not a patreon (yet) and would like this reference picture. Can't get it on your patreon page, so would you please direct me to where I can get it? Thank you sooooo much!
Very nice and informative, question can this powder blender be used with oil paint?
It's The Best ever seen video ! Thank you for sharing your knowledge, tips and tricks!!
Just started drawing ,, great videos!!
But what's the name of the fixative it's not linked that I could see
Can you manipulate the blending powder with a stump?
i know the video is older but i wonder if i can replace the powder blender by using the colorless blender pan pastel? am i way off? let me know. thanks!
No, it won't work the same at all :)
"I couldn't decide if I wanted tea or coffee, so I got both." Gold. 😂
:P Mmmm...tea
Agreed, both works for me
I need to know exactly what the powder blender is and what to look for in the shop please
I don't know what it's made out of, but you can get more info at brushandpencil.com :)
Look here for more.

Thank you so much Lisa it was so informative and extremely helpful
Can you use the fixative for layering with the inktense pencils?
How does powdered blender work with LyraRembrandt polycolor pencils?
I bought sanded paper from dick Blick art. But it’s soooo rough. I mean I can sand wood with it lol. They said it would work with the colorless blender. It works terrible. So many creases showing through and eating up my pencils super fast. I even used my oil based pencils. Should I spray the texture fixative first?
Oh, one more question. I know you say you don’t like pastels, but have you ever tried the pan pastels for background, since you use those tools with it? I’ve been thinking of this since I have little patience. I’ve seen another artist do this and would love other feedback of it!
Thanks Lisa for being you! How long did this painting take you?
Wow !! That was wonderful ❤️❤️
TFS
Thanks :D
Love thisss!! Colors are so vibrant!!
Having a real hard time finding that transfer paper. Have you gotten any recently? Or you just have a stash? My stash be runnin' low 🥺
I've been using the same paper for years. Royal langnickle I've also used recently and it's been nice.
Lisa do you ever use a paper stump to smooth?
Allô Lisa, what brandy of sanded paper are you using?
What type of spray did you use in this video. You didn’t mention it in the name. For your light issue play with your light balance and make sure it’s set to your light type.
Laura, why Pablo pencils at the end? They're oil-based (& yes, great pencils, fantastic blues)
Edit: well said about values & color.
Lisa is Pastelmat ok with this product?
do you not use pan pastels for background ? or do you not like it
