STUNNING Presentation. How I SEAL, MOUNT and VARNISH my COLORED PENCIL Artwork.
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 27 дек 2021
- In this video I share my complete process for sealing, mounting, and varnishing my colored pencil paintings. I share why I choose to present several of my pieces without glass, what products I use to keep my pieces safe from environmental and light damage, and some safety tips for working with toxic fixatives.
This is an approach that I adopted from Ester Roi. You can read her process on her blog here:

One suggestion I would make is to substitute taping the paper to acid free foam board instead of cardboard. I didn't realize until a few years ago that if paper even touches something like cardboard it can become vulnerable to yellowing in those areas. If you're going to use cardboard maybe put a sheet of glassine over it and tape it to that.
I didn't think about that either. Thanks for the advice! Also, sorry for the super late response. I took an extended RUclips break, but Im back and just posted a new video today if you are interested:

Happy New Year!!
Oh this is music to my ears, I have painted on canvas for many years, then started doing charcoal and pastel which I love, it hurts my heart to put behind glass :(
It’s a lot of work but makes for a beautiful presentation!
Beautiful process Lana!! and your paintings are so awesome
Thanks so much!
Wow…what an informative video. Rushing right over to check out your courses!

This was extremely helpful thank you
You're welcome! Thanks for being here!
i love it !
Thanks!!
i truly cant thank you enough
You are so welcome! Glad to hear it was helpful.
wow! i never thought about any other way to present my paintings beside behind glass. i really have to try this out!
I love this presentation … but prepare yourself… it’s time consuming!
I would like to learn more techniques depending on brands and presenting styles are always a great lesson! Thanks for all your videos. They are great to learn from!
You are so welcome!
I've been using colored pencils for a very long time. Listening to your videos helps me learn how to put that final glo to it.
Thanks so much! I am so glad you watch my videos and I always love your comments!
Thank you so much for a very informative video on the process of finishing our artworks.
I always wondered how to do this. Now i know.
Just recently started using colored pencils. Im happy now ive found this information to complete the process. Thank you.
So happy to have you here. glad to hear it was helpful!
Thank you soooo much!💓💓💓💓💓
You're welcome 😊
I've been using colored pencils for years, but just ordered sanded paper and powder blender for the first time. I'd love to take your course to learn how to use them properly. I'm excited to try powder blender because brunishing hurts my hand/wrist, and I like to avoid solvents in the winter when I can't open the window. Also interested in improving my drawing skills and values.
My course would be a great fit for you! Thanks for reaching out and entering the giveaway!
Awesome
Thanks. Let me know if you give it a try! Sorry for the super late response. I took an extended RUclips break, but Im back and just posted a new video today if you are interested:

Happy New Year!!
I love your work, it simply glows! I would like very much to learn your techniques. I have the supplies, but lack the confidence to get started, and depression and other medical issues greatly affect my energy. Having a course laid out for me, with support, would really help with motivation and accountability! 😊
Thanks for being willing to share you excitement and struggles. I am the same way with accountability!
interesting video, someday, maybe my pencil work would merit that much protection :) , meanwhile lots of good information
Thanks. It’s nice to have options when it comes to presentation… but I hear you, this method t ales a long time and it needs to be something you are committed to.
How do you feel about spray adhesive vs graphix? Also, what are your thoughts about spray painting sides prior to affixing the art?
Awesome video. Thanks! In your opinion do you think the UV protection of the varnish can offset the risk of using a less light-fast color pencil? I'm sure it depends but curious if you have an opinion.
Hey! Glad you like the video. I am honestly not sure. I use the Uv protection to replace glass… and I typically use “Uv protective glass” and lightfast pencils. The protective glass/varnish are considered “museum “ conditions for lightfast ratings… so if you have a really low lightfast rating I feel that you are going to notice deterioration of color/saturation… I have never tested this though… it’s just speculation :)
@@LanaGloschatArt makes sense. I think I'm going to test it out one day. Either way. Glad I found your channel.
I wish I had known this before I ruined one of my pieces by gluing it down. Thanks for this video!
Glad I could help!
I keep hearing great things about it. Apparently, it seals very well (waterproof) and with no hassle and the fact they are using it for gouache, means a wax painting is not required.
Interesting!
Thank you for this video. Does this sealing technique work for pan pastels, soft pastels, as well as pencil? thank you
I have done some pieces that have pastel + colored pencil and they look great. If you are doing a piece that is 100% pastel I would check first on a test sheet but honestly I do think it would work well
I absolutely loved this video! I have been wanting to mount my colour pencil pieces on a panel without a frame and now I know how! I love the shine! Is it necessary to use the archival spray as well as the gloss polymer varnish? Or are they both the same thing? Can’t wait to get going 🤗
I would use them both. One seals the work and one varnishes. Glad this video was helpful!
@@LanaGloschatArt Thanks 🤗
@@LanaGloschatArt Lana, I can see that brushing on a varnish without first using a fixative could easily mess things up, but could a spray on (aerosol) varnish act as an all in one sealer? PS, your video is great!
@@oldigger7060 the varnish I use has been MIA for months. It was a pandemic shortage victim. So I have been wondering too. I think it’s a possibility, h by it the paintin varnish helps seal everything in and gives it that polished sheen that you can’t get just with sorays
I'm not sure where to place this question....and if you've addressed this in a video I missed, I apologize. I want to know how you decide to use powder blender or OMS. What determines your choice and do you use them on the same artwork? Tks in advance....so much love your videos and plan to take your course soon!
Hey! I use powder blender in my introductory layers with my oil based colored pencils and OMS with wax pencils in later layers. I show this process and these techniques in detail in the course. Excited to see you over there soon!
Is this where I tell you why I want to take your course? I want to learn the techniques you teach using brush and pencil products this will benefit me by making my art more painterly, a style I love…and to show me techniques that will improve my work and also speed it up. I am a beginner trying to learn all I can from various artists in order to develop my own style.
Yes it is! Thanks for entering. This course will 100% help with a painterly approach. Do you have many of the supplies already or would you be able to purchase those you don’t have?
Lana…I have them all, but may need to purchase more Luxarchival in another size 🙂
@@joanwells2769 awesome!
do you do this if you have pan pastel as your base? Thanks!
yes I have done this with a pan pastel base and it worked great!

Happy New Year!!
Thank you for your videos. I paint purely with only pan pastel, then I spray with fixatives, do I need to seal it with spray varnish again?
I depends on how you want to present your piece. I do all this work so I can present them without glass... but if you plan to frame behind glass, which is fairly typical for pastel pieces, then a few coats of spray fixative will usually suffice.
Watching this 2 years after posting, but great video, thank you!
Whenever I spray my colorpencil drawings, it darkens the whole image. I have been struggling with this for a while now as I make bright color drawings.
Would varnishing after spraying bring back the brightness again?
What spray do you use? the spays I mention in this video have never darkened my work but I know some definitely can. Only spray your drawings if you are planning to frame without glass, otherwise you don't really need it. And always test your sprays first.
is the winsor and newton profesional matt spray varnish a good option for colored pencil works?
I'm sorry. I haven't used that one. Best bet would be to test on a scrap or a "throw away drawing"
When spraying do you worry about the paper bubbling or warping?
Sometimes, after many coats the. Paper will bow a tiny bit but I have never had issues with this impacting my ability to mount the paper. This spray isn’t a “bubbling” spray like textured fixative. It applies really smooth
Curious - is it possible to mount the piece onto the board first and then spray it? Or is there a disadvantage to doing it in that order instead?
Also, any recommendations for alternative options? Golden archival seems to always be out of stock and I can’t find the varnishes anywhere around me either! 😩
Yes you could spray on the board... I just find it easier to do several at a time if I can tape them to cardboard.
I honestly have had issues with the producst being out of stock for the last couple years! and I haven't done this technique for a long time. When I find some alternatives I will make a video. Sorry to not be more help.
after the spray varnish I got blobs.....I used Winsor Newton satin varnish not the golden maybe the golden is better......!
oh no. I haven't had issue with this with the golden. I would also check your nozzle and make sure there isn't a clog
Amazing! I feel the same about my pastel art...hate it behind glass so I spend a fortune on artglass....My question is will this work with pastel?!
It has worked for me, but I have only tried on pastel mixed with colored pencil, never 100% pastel. If you try it out, please let me know how it goes!
@@LanaGloschatArt first layer was fine but then i did a second spray and it messed the painting up :P i will try again tho
I do have a question, I looked up the golden company and they no longer carry the varnish you recommended at the end, but I did see they have another water based polymer varnish called waterborne varnish that also has UVLs in it. Would that work as well?
Yes this was so frustrating for me. I haven't been able to get this product since the pandemic and unfortunately I just haven't been doing this any more. But I think its possible for other materials to work to. I just haven't tried. If you try it out, would you please share your results on this video chat? Thanks so much
I tried your process with the Natural Glass varnish and after the piece had been finished and hanging in my living room for a few months, I noticed there were a few spots of the varnish that were "glazing over" and peeling off. Have you ever experienced this issue? If so, do you have any recommendations to avoid this? I really love the final outcome of this process and would love to mount all of my artwork this way. Thank you for all of the information :)
Oh no. The natural glass isn't my first choice, but that darn golden varnish has been out of stock for over a year . (Its supposed to be in soon!) The pieces I did try the natural glass varnish on are not peeling though... I wonder if you applied it really thick? I definitely watered mine down and applied 6+ coats. I cant think of any other reasons... I am so sorry. Check on the golden varnish in a few months... they assured me it would be back in stock!
Do you use this method on pieces with Pan Pastel underpainting?
Yes I have used this process with a panpastel underpainting! I haven’t used this on a piece that was 100% pastel, but those pieces that are panpastel/colored pencil do great with this process. If you try it be sure to let me know how it goes!
This process is too long! The finish process are so beautiful!! Inovating!!! At this time, I cannot invest in something awesome like this, that in my Country, later, they cannot pay, because they do not support the Artists. But, this process that you have done, gives me a slightly simpler idea, to assemble my art work! thanks for this tutorial!
I am totally a process person so I love these kinds of things. I totally understand that they aren’t for everyone though. Ha ha. Glad you found it helpful and that it sparked some new ideas!!!
@@LanaGloschatArt yes, exactly, It's not for everyone, but it looks so beautiful!!!... I would like to do this fabulous idea...but, my people don't appreciate arts...😔
Would this work for soft or pan pastels?
I have used it on pieces with a panpastel base and colored pencils over the top… I think it could work on pieces 100% pastel, but Not sure. I would definitely experiment first!
Do you use matte or gloss or semi gloss varnish?
typically gloss or semi gloss. Never matte or satin
Do you have a link for the boards you use please
Yes! Here it is. sorry for the delay

That Dorland's wax medium isn't appropriate for colored pencils (oil/wax/watercolor)? It is for gouache, as far as I know..
I’m not sure what product you are referring to. I don’t use a wax medium in this project and haven’t used one since college…
Have you ever used a glue instead of a sticky? Can that be done?
I haven’t. But maybe you could try a spray adhesive? I would definitely experiment around with different methods with samples and scratch paper before trying it on your art work
I’m having trouble finding the varnish. Is Golden MSA Varnish with ulvs the same?
No they are not the same. This is a Mineral spirit varnish that is going to have much more aggressive fumes and is often trickier to work with safely. The polymer varnish I use has been out of stock for months ... I think this is a result of the pandemic. This is a possible substitute: tinyurl.com/28ka3hk6 This link will take you to a product called "natural glass" which can be used in place of the UVLS polymer varnish.
Thank you Lana. I wanted to check first before I ordered it. Your work is amazing and you are so easy to understand. You truly are a gifted artist and teacher. Thank you for your willingness to share all of your techniques so openly.
why no draw or paint directly on the wooden canvas? i want to do color pencil on a wooden canvas but would that be a bad idea?
It’s a texture thing. Most wooden panels wouldn’t have the right texture for my colored pencil techniques, but I’m sure some techniques would be great.
so a simple no shading just lines and coloring in the lines would be good ya think?@@LanaGloschatArt
can this varnish be used on graphite?
I haven't personally used it that way but I imagine it would do a great job. It's always best to do a test first.
Thank you very much i appreciate you😊
I honestly have never created any art with colored pencils since I left school. All I have now are 3 sample pencils from Derwent. Not sure if curiosity is a good enough reasons to join your giveaway 😅
Curiosity is totally welcome, but I do want to make sure you would have access to all the supplies you need. Have you checked out the supply list and would you be able to purchase the necessary supplies? (If you only have 3 pencils there will be quite a bit to acquire)
@@LanaGloschatArt I would love to get some colored pencils but I have no clue which to choose - so many jargons 😅 I’ve also been told not to get a set but that makes it even harder. I have only been doing watercolor painting and want to incorporate color pencils into my watercolor journey and urban sketching. Any chance you already have a video on this topic? 😄
@@butacrafts I don’t have a video specifically on urban sketching, but I have several review videos including on that is all about how to pick out the best pencils for sanded paper. I would recommend buying a set vs individual pencils because it’s a better value per pencil. the panpastel underneath doesn’t smudge?
Nope! I sealed it with textured fixative before adding colored pencils over the top.
The one by brush and pencil?
I got the Final fixative by B&P and it sputter like crazy, ruining my artwork.
