As mentioned by other viewers ,Lyra Rembrandt are great ! It was my first choice when I was on a budget .As I got more advanced ,I added Polychromos and axpected them to be better but there are just different.I love the more muted color palette they are also great for blending with solvent .They lay down easily and are very smooth. They are oil based but behave in some kind like wax based ones( if it makes sense ).Last but not least ; they are cheaper here in Germany than FC Polys .Prismas are hard to get and CD and Derwent's are expensive.I buyed afew open stock and the Luminance are great but im still using only the Portrait set of 20 combined with my Lyra which creates a beautiful color palette for portraits and animals without breaking the bank.I really appreciate your videos.I've learned a lot.Youre my favourite teacher for cp on youtube. Thanks a lot
Hey! I still haven't tried the Lyra Rembrandts … maybe a goal for 2024 :) If you love muted palettes you might love the Derwent drawing pencils? Have you tried those? Try lyra Rembrandt polycolor, i have a 36 and 72 set , I also use kohinoor polycolor brown line ,they're oil based and I also have a stabilo original 38 set maxium they're semi-watercolour something like caran d'ache supracolour, I'd like a review on them
I love your approach to creating realistic artwork in colored pencils. I agree with how important it is to freehand the drawing as well. You're a great teacher and I'm thankful for your videos.
Thank you so so much! I got an email this morning that you signed up for my course! I can’t tell you how happy I was to see students enrolling so quickly. You made my day. I’m so excited to get to know you better!
@@LanaGloschatArt aw thank you. Yes, just signed up and can't wait to be your beta tester:) I really want to learn your method as I haven't used this way before on a sanded surface. I'm looking forward meeting you as well.

This was so interesting Lana, Thank you🤗. Colored Pencils are my favorite medium. But wow! I have only tried pastels a couple of times. Now, after watching your video, I'm ready to try again with a much better knowledge base and use my colored pencils with the pastels. THANK YOU! I love your original painting more than the cropped piece. I find the colors you use in the background intriguing so the open space does not bother me.
Thanks so much! I am happy that you found and watched my video! Please let me know how your pastel experimentation goes, and if you are interested in some feedback you can always post it over in my critique group! (Free group to join and fun to check out other artists’ work)

I was worried for you since a lot of people like to argue and fight over the Pablos being a wax or oil based pencil. I am glad it didnt happen. I like using polychromos regularly on Arches hot press watercolor paper but i prefer pablos as an oil based pencil on sanded paper like pastelmat. For wax based white please try the soft white Holbein pencil. It is the softest, most opaque white pencil, i have ever tried.
Isn’t it funny how we begin to notice all these subtle differences between different colored pencils over time!! I’ll have to try Holbein pencils soon… haven’t had a chance yet! :)
@@LanaGloschatArt Holbeiins are a bit costly and questionable lightfast since they dont use standard testing. However, the Soft White pencil alone is worth a buy.
Defenetly, this video are very important to biginners like me!!!, it's have a lot information! You're so right, I try the Derwent Lightfast, and they're in the middle of the oil base and wax. I'm going to save this awesome video! Wow!! Many thanks!!!😍😊🥰👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Brilliant idea putting these on a spectrum! Thankyou! Holbein has a set of 150 that is fabulous. It can be hard to get though…Its softer than Derwent lightfast….
That’s good to know. I still use a few prismacolor pencils but there are so many other pencils I enjoy using more… so I don’t end up replacing them with hen they wear out anymore.
Hey! This video is older and I probably just hadn't tried them yet… but if you are talking about the Derwent lightfast pencils I have tried them on this surface and I prefer the combo of polychromos and luminance. Have you tried the Holbein Artist Colored Pencils yet? I find them firmer than Luminance and Derwent Lightfast but softer than Polychromos. Very blendable, in my limited experience.
I haven’t tried them but I would like to! I’ll look into tracking down a set! Are they your go to pencils or do you tend to use them in combination with other pencils?
@@LanaGloschatArt I'm still playing around with them, but I feel like they could become my go-to pencils. I need to try blending them out with OMS before I'm certain. 150 colors. They're kinda pricy, but available in open stock on Blick's website.

@@LanaGloschatArt Yes, I have both sets of 72 colors. I believe the watercolor version costs more than the regular ones. They can be found on Amazon and Blicks who also carry open stock. They are a decent midrange pencil but certainly not in league with Derwent Lightfast or F-C Polychromos. But, are the best choice if you can’t afford the higher tier. There is a Lyra blender pencil, also. Also, I want to thank you for your well researched videos. You cover material that others omit.

They would probably work just fine on sanded paper, but I believe those are pastel pencils rather than traditional colored pencils. I don’t use pastel pencils a ton and can’t speak much about them.
I will blend with gamsol or eco house neutral thin solvent. If you are new to solvent be sure to check out my solvent video so you are sure to use it safely. I use these solvents with all of my pencils including the lightfast pencils.
I would say that caran d’ache luminance are a great pencil! They are a little waxier/creamier than lightfast pencils, but they are comparable quality. Both very well made and very lightfast!
When I say oil based I just mean that it isn’t as waxy and that the % of oil is higher. In my experience pablos are less waxy and I would call them an oil-based, but the certain,up aren’t the consistency of an oil pastel or something like that.
