    • @LanaGloschatArt

      I have used lots of pencils effectively with pan pastels. More than anything I think it’s important to pay attention to the kind of paper and the type of mark you want. I know your comment is quite old and has been answered by Lisa already, but I wanted to add this observation because I never see it mentioned anywhere:
      Polychromos and Pablos stand out to me when used with PanPastel because they seem to blend together with the PanPastel. Very reminiscent of the powder blender. Waxy pencils like Prismacolors, on the other hand, create a bit of a resist.

    Do you need to spray or set the pastels so they won’t smear when you use Colored Pencils over them? How heavily do you lay in the pans on underpainting?

    • @LanaGloschatArt
      @LanaGloschatArt  3 года назад

      Hey Doris! I usually do a couple light coats of textured fixative before applying the colored pencil but it isn’t 100% necessary. The PanPastels are applied fairly lightly… so there is still a reasonable tooth left to the paper.

    Hi Lana! I love your work. You are a natural instructor. I’m enjoying your videos. Do you use “zest it” or any other solvent to allow the pans to glide onto the sanded paper more smoothly, and glide further?

    • @LanaGloschatArt
      @LanaGloschatArt  2 года назад +3

      Hey there! I don’t use any solvent with my pans. There are some powder blenders sold by brush and pencil and by panpastel that you could try but I probably wouldn’t use any liquid solvents… in fact I typically fix my pans with a spray before adding colored pencil so the solvent doesn’t really get to that layer if I use solvent with my pencils.
      Zest it is probably pretty similar to the solvents I use (gamsol and eco house)

      It’s hard to know without seeing it… it could be the amount of pressure? I usually add a lot of pressure wirh the pencils… more than on regular white paper. Could also be that you need to keep building layers… it can take a while to fill in the grain on this paper. What’s your subject?

      my recommendation is to try a smaller set or just purchase a few open stock. You could get a black and white and do a value drawing, or you could get a smaller set with a few more colors (I have a few good ones linked in the notes of this video... some are less than $40 I believe) and you can work with just a few colors. These mix well, so you don't necessarily need every single color to create beautiful work.
