    Alone
    Season 4
    Episode 7
    Hooked
    In Alone, ten men are left in solitude, and separated from each other, in the harsh Vancouver Island wilderness. With no camera crews or producers, they have to survive using only what they can stuff into a backpack. They will hunt, build shelters and fend off predators as they face extreme isolation, psychological distress and the terrifying plunge into the unknown.

    The physical and psychological benefits of having a strong hut/ barrier are worth the effort of construction. A place to truly relax and let your guard down is important for long term survival.

    • @donrussell8889
      @donrussell8889 6 лет назад +8

      wrong. Not if doing so takes calories and time that you can instead use to set up to feed yourself properly. A tarp shelter sufices until that point, cause it rarely freezes on the shores of Vancouver Island. You've only got about 6 weeks before the winter shuts down nearly all of your foraging, so you need to make lots of netting, set it as fish weirs, and average catching 20 lbs of fish per day (per person) You also need to juice the kelp, with a big wooden mortar and pestle.

    • @susanolson3611
      @susanolson3611 6 лет назад +11

      Don Russell, I agree with you and most people would be fine with a tarp. I guess I am a little phobic of bears, I would not be able to rest if I didn't have some barrier that would at least slow them down enough for me to grab the bear spray. I would love to compete on Alone if there were no big predators. Yes, I am a chicken 🙂

      take one of Chief Aj's slingbows, and that bears flesh and fat will win you a clear 1/4 million $. So do everything that you can to attract them! :-) The second day, you can find a tree with a big, horizontal fork, where you can lay a few saplings across it, have a platform to sleep upon. TIE your ladder to the tree while up there! :-)

    • @susanolson3611
      @susanolson3611 6 лет назад

      Don Russell, Up a tree sounds awesome and I suppose a platform could be built faster and easier than a hut. I just watched your Chief Aj's slingbow video, cool idea! I can see how that would be a great advantage!

    • @donrussell8889
      @donrussell8889 6 лет назад +1

      there's a couple of things that make it better. One is the ability to use baked clay balls at targets that are not worth the risk of damaging or losing an arrow. Rocks never fly straight, so all they do is waste an opportunity. The other thing is that you can take 4 of the 6 arrows as 4-tined fishing heads. Each tine can be made into 2 fishhooks in just a few minutes. This lets you take the slingbow "for free", since you get the fishhooks and the slingbow, for the "price" of not taking the 25 fishhooks and line. The 2 person hammock, made of paracord, is 1500 ft of paracord, once you unravel it. So it's silly to take the 20m of paracord and the fishhooks and line. The 9-strand, 750 paracord can have its outer sheathing peeled off and you'll have lots of strands out of which to make plenty of netting, which will feed you quite wel, or to hang fishhooks from, if you like. . The outer sheathing can be used to do any lashing that you need to do, too. It's far better to shred and roast some cambium for bait, and use the hooks, small log rafts, and drowning rocks to catch 3 lb gulls and ducks, than to have your bait dissolve in the water, be nibbled off by minnows, or catch 3 oz fish. The birds are going to migrate soon, and they have fat, which the fish do not. So catching 20 or more of them should be a top priority your first month on the Island.

    This cabin was dope. Major props to them for building this.
    When initially watching this season, I wondered if building this cabin would be their demise due to the amount of energy they had to burn to build it... I don’t think that was the case, though. I think they lasted as long as they did because of their cabin.

    Why did they build that second cabin? Brooke had already made an easy, long lasting functional, water proof and heated shelter with plenty of space for two by the time Dave got there - of a quality that was among the best in the show already. Why they demolished it to rebuild another bigger heavy duty cabin, up a hill, further away from food and water, costing them over a week or two of calories and time to build... it is a pretty dumb thing to do. So what, you have a cabin. Now you're starving.
    Brook got completely exhausted, and they never gained back the energy deficit because a cabin doesn't feed you. That time and energy could have been useful for foraging, and food supplies from fishing etc and finding places to fish. They would have had such an easier time IMO, were it not for building cabin they didn't need.

Also where they were is technically a rain forest so putting clay in any area that had access to the outside would turn it to mud. Also a guy in the first season which was also based in the same area actually found a clay deposit and tested it with heat (hoping to build an oven) and it didnt work at all. Different climates. Quite a waste of energy building such an elaborate cabin. They could even built a super shelter with all the tarps they have. Also a teepee would have been a rather easy but effective idea but still very impressive

      I agree. The amount of energy / calories that went into the cabin was ridiculous and obviously a poor strategy. I think they decided they wern't going to win but thought it would be cool to build the cabin. Why else would they do it ? I don't buy the Psychology argument. You have to prioritize not starving first.

    burn up 30,000 calories building this, then starve out. :-) Same time and effort, could have a portable tarp shelter and 3000 sq ft of 2" mesh netting, set up as baited weirs. You have to know, tho, to take a gillnet and 2-person hammock, both made out of 9-strand 750 paracord. Guess which way provides lots of calories to give you the means to stay longer? :-) Move the shelter to wear the squaw wood is. Break off dead branches with your bodyweight or a bat-sized baton, or use your saw or the E tool. get them on a rack, under their own "roof" of a chunk of the 20x20 tarp, so that they can dry out.

      The Gil nets stopped working for like ALL of the people there. They had to worry about shifting tides so constantly. A lot od times low tode came at night. And when the weather dropped and fishes metabolism slowed down and they stopped feeding as much the Gil nets were pretty useless for everyone there.
