- Why Did Both The Jedi and Sith Really Hate This Lightsaber Variant?
Lightsabers came in all different shapes and sizes, from the spinning dual-bladed saber used by the inquisitors to the light whip found in legends. Yet, the Jedi and most Sith seldom deviated from the single-bladed lightsaber, nor did they attempt to master more creative lightsaber fighting styles. The Jedi reasoned that lightsabers that gave an unfair advantage mitigated the need for perseverance in the light side, while the Sith believed their use showed weakness. But of all the lightsaber variants, the Jedi and Sith hated one most of all, hence why it was so uncommon. Although extremely hard to master, this lightsaber was almost impossible to defend against. Known as the flicker phase blade, this lightsaber was similar to the lightsaber form Trakata. It ignited and extinguished at random intervals, preventing opponents from effectively blocking or entering into a saber lock; disorienting and defeating often confused opponents.

Using a blade that randomly stops existing sounds like a great way to miss a killing blow or get killed when it fails to parry or lock another blade.
Pause mid fight. "Oh damnit not again hold on man this does this often"
Indeed
I’m assuming skilled force users could feel or even control the changes. I don’t have anything to base this off of other than the fact that the force is used to connect with your light saber as if it were just an extension of your arm.
Oh but not if say you made the flicker phase lightsaber with a ghost fire crystal and the flickering a pattern only the wielder is aware of. Try defending against a blade that flickers in and out, is hardly visible and makes absolutely no sound. That right there is the weapon of a force wielding bounty hunter or assassin.
iirc they chose when to ignite and turn it off, correct me if im wrong
Jedi:It's unprofessional and unsportsmanlike😊
Sith:Tell yo mama that you a b*tch🤬
Why would the sith care anyway, they use their lightsabers in unfair ways anyway 🤦♂️

This is probably the best way to think about it. Everyone in comments is saying how it seems bad to have your blade randomly disappear but they've never tried playing against a lagging player in an FPS.
This man is a goddamn genius
@@plasmakitten4261 if the lagging one is the weapon only, then I don't want it, but if the person also lagging, then I will be a nightmare for my enemies 😈
Imagine tryna block and your Sword turns off
for me that technique is stupidly dangerous for the holder, a defensive block can quickly become a parry, so it is highly possible for an attack to become a interchange, meaning the injury for both contenders.
you wouldn't block with that blade, you would block with another blade. That blade would be for attacking.
@@jfast8256
What you are basically saying is that you need a normal lightsaber in order to make this one viable. You’d have to exclusively block with one hand, which limits you and makes you extremely predictable. It’s not a good weapon. At that point, just use two regular lightsabers that can attack and block/parry equally.

I figure that one side would have raised the concern of "Doesn't this also make it almost impossible to block with?"
Fighting without blocking is probably part of the difficult technique?
Dodge
Gotta dodge roll only
Yes, which makes it worthless since most real world swordsmanship techniques attack and defend in the same move. The best you could hope for would be a double.
@alphastronghold715 this just in, star wars isn't the real world, and if we had swords which can turn off, we might have developed different fighting styles for them which focus on dodging for defense.

Seems useless and just more of a hassle when u can literally just press the on/off button on an regular lightsabers.
Is that not what the video is referring to? Seems like a huge design flaw for the weapon to randomly turn itself off without the wielded knowledge.
@@MoistOwlettes I believe the point is that when dueling a fellow force-sensitive, they will be able to sense your decision to turn it off and react accordingly. The whole point of the weapon is that it surprises both the wielder and the opponent, so neither side can use their force powers in anticipation.
@@jarowanthat's some fantasy nonsense right there. If you're surprised too it's not really an advantage. And even knowing without controlling is still a disadvantage
Especially since its not even a one sided benefit. Its not that your opponent's can't block it, it just cannot block or be blocked resulting in your enemy haveing the same advantage you do. This thing would be a death trap.
@@Sirperfluousthat’s real though, force users can see into the near future. With some methods allowing users to see into potential futures.
It does sound like a way of cheating in a duel. Surprising that there was something Jedi and Sith could agree on
Look at it this way: if the blades can't interact, the most likely outcome is two corpses.
They’ve also agreed on not using specific force techniques due to inherent dangers that they pose
The Jedi and Sith both agree on certain things with inverse reasoning. Takata and the Flickersaber are two of several examples of things that Jedi view as cheap and Sith view as weak.
So it’s basically that meme “will it work?” “50/50”
i’m glad both Jedi and Sith agreed this was extremely dumb
Exar Kun had a lightsaber similar to what you describe. It didn't flicker on and off randomly, but he was able to directly change the length of the blades by manipulating a control on the handles, so he could partially retract and extend the blade during a fight, causing his opponents to attempt a block or parry of a blade that was no longer there. They would miss and overextend, leaving them open to a finishing blow. An interesting fighting style.
A dual phase lightsaber.
A. Darth vader also had the ability to change the length of his lightsbaer.
B. For those techniques (trakata) a saber with the ability to change blade length just isn't necessary.
That flicker could also get the user killed since it was a random intervals. You go to block a swing, your blade turns off just long enough for you to get hit and your opponent is left baffled wondering how they won.
I love how whenever the Jedi and sith agree to dislike something, it is usually that the Jedi think it is unsportsmanlike and the sith just think it’s for chickens
Darth Bane would have no problem with this lightsaber "Treachery and Cunning are the tools of the Dark Side"
May the rng be with you.
They really thought "Skill issue"
Meanwhile the wielders probably summarized it with "Haters gonna hate" whilst killing everyone effortlessly.
until it turned off on them at a critical moment and they died looking like an idiot.
"Why did both sides hate this lightsaber varient" *goes on to talk about a lightsaber fighting form and not a model*
Well he did talk about the saber model, he just compared it to the Trakata form of combat
Imagine cutting through a blast door with that thing and it just randomly decided to make you faceplant into the floor because it turned off.
😂 imagining Kylo doing this and getting progressively pissed off
Reminds me of the time Cal Kestis turned off his lightsaber when fighting against Trilla while they were crossing their lightsabers only to confuse Trilla and force push her lol
That was basically an accidental use of a trakata techique wich is pretty cool.
I feel like certain sabers would take MORE skill to use. Like a whip lightsaber. You would have to learn how to not cut your own limbs off; and you wouldn't be able to block at all. Not to mention dealing with your whip wrapping around and gettint stuck to your opponents saber as lightsabers attract eachother
Wouldn't be too different from just a regular whip considering actual whip users never have a problem with their whips wrapping around themselves or tangling on their limbs to begin with. It'd also be impossible to block because if they tried to block it their lightsaber would just pull it in causing it to swing around even harder and "wrapping" around them as well as the blade when it makes its U-turn... Try to block it and it'll just behead you and turn you into patties as it wraps back around. The main challenge would be trying to block blaster shots with it and if you're standing on a roof you'd also have to worry about it destroying your footing and collapsing the roof in so you'd mainly have to adapt to a swirling technique like hula-hooping it when you're not on solid ground.
That's actual expectation given for why so few use the lightwhip. It has no defense, so if your opponent knows how to get around it, or if you can't overwhelm/reach them, you're screwed.
For people that don’t know, trakata is a form where you use the advantage of being able to turn the lightsaber on and off to exit clashes and gain the upper hand
Im surprised we never saw someone turn off their blade and then reignite it at a lower angle after a sabre lock. You could literally do lightspeed thrusts
It takes time to turn on/off. Considering how fast fights in close quarters can be it's a bad idea.
Practically speaking the common lightsaber is this most effective weapon.
Better than the Grievous' variant of four lightsabers at a time.
"Can't do it? Sounds like a limb issue."
False. With four lightsabers, you could effectively guard and attack at the same time even against multiple opponents (which is apparent if you’ve ever seen the 2003 clone wars). This asinine piece of scrap only lets you attack and removes any threat space you control since it can just shut off in the middle of the bind, resulting in you dying instantly, or while you’re trying to parry, resulting at best in you both killing each other at the same time.

I'm glad to see here Githany, one of the most underrated female characters in Star Wars. For those who know her, this light whip master was a fellow student and lover of Darth Bane, being the main guide that the founder of the Rule of Two had on his journey to the Dark Side. Ironically, she was also the last sentimental link Bane had before he turned into a monster and murdered her with the thought bomb after failing to make her his apprentice.
Yeah, Githany was cool, but she'll never be Darth Zannah cool.

I think it would have been better If Bane killed her directly. She was weak anyway.
@@woodpecker8116He didn't need to. she killed herself with her weakness
The lightsaber Chrystal makes a distinctive sound when it discharges to power down . It can’t “flicker’ off and on without going through its normal startup and shutdown sequence, about 1/2 to 3/4 of a second. This sound is warning that the blade is about to decompose, preventing the opponent from making a mistake.
Imagine trying to block a repeating blaster with this, much less regular fire.
This thing was a near-guaranteed way to get yourself killed.
Just dodge :skull: stop blocking, just dodge and attack.
Not everyone has the luxury of being able to dodge. What if you get outnumbered and backed into a corner? What then? "I'll just use my saber to defle-" and you've been shot dead.
@@magnusthevaliant if you get surrounded and outnumbered, no way you’re able to deflect them. 3 or 5 people i can see, if you’re the most experienced jedi master, but if you’d surrounded 360 degrees with no backup, you might as well give up.
@@magnusthevaliant think about it, the only reason blaster fire never hits is because of plot armor, rebels is especially guilty of this. 1000 shots from a army of drones are fired at them from a pretty far distance, and the main characters just close the gap in 2 seconds, the drones not even hitting a single shot.
@@-w-8429 Yes, 360 fire's pretty much an execution, but most Knights would be able to fight their way out of a corner if they had a stable saber.

The light whip really strains suspension of disbelief in regards to how most people accept that lightsabers work.
Imagine using it to block blaster bolts

I don't understand why Light Whip is considered a Lighsaber... it's only a metal whip that generate a cutting field around it... that is not a Lightsaber.
It has a killing potential of one but it's not a actual Lightsaber.

According to Legends lore. Dual phase was actually quite popular ABY. It utilized two crystals instead of one. One crystal made a shorter blade for fighting in small spaces. One was standard length. With the right timing, you could cycle between blades and back causing that "random" shut off. You could also ignite both at the same time to extend the blade beyond it's normal reach for a brief period of time. In one case, an extra meter.
the jedi also believed that having any sort of unorthodox lightsaber ruins their image as peacekeepers. in the same token they didn’t like dual wielding, because it was one more lightsaber than a jedi should have, and two more than they should need.

Funny how in the battle with the Second Sister in Fallen Order, Cal actually used trakata to win the battle. Then in Survivor the lightsaber wielding raiders use it aswell.
Random intervals sounds dangerous for the wielder as well
I have often wondered why turning one's sabre on and off was not a larger part of lightsabre dueling
Had an idea for a lightsaber, though I dunno if its as cool as it sounds to me. Basically a free floating dial on the side of the handle, preferably out of the grip, could spin and wouldnt increase or decrease the length of the blade. If it went too far it would 'bounce back' the blade making it do a really fast in and out motion. Then as a final touch, this dial could be pressed in to lock it at a chosen length.

Imagine you come to a stalemate with another force user in Lightsaber Combat. Both of you are near-equally matched and your blows meet the others saber no matter what you try to do.
In the heat of it all, as you slam your saber against your opponents, you stare deep into their eyes; Showing your true feelings toward them. The anger slips in, you are at your wits end, you just want the fight to be over already.
Then it happens. Your opponent side-steps and their saber turns off; In a single moment you slipped up and became distracted in thought and that’s all that is needed.
.
Your enemy’s blade switches off for but a second, you stumble forward as they side step, turn the blade back on and pierce you right through the back. The fight is over; You have died.

Rear Jadi 🤝 Sith Moment
I love how the answer to pretty much any, "Why don't they do this?" tactic is always that the Jedi thinks it's dishonorable and the Sith say you look like a b**** 😂
I have feeling that there are mixed two different concepts. One is type of lightsaber, like wimp, dual etc. And second is way of combat with lightsabers, style, school of fighting etc. Jedi and Sith have 7 main forms/styles/philosophies of fighting. (There were fancy names, I can't remember) If I remember right, one Jedi created 8. form, that use main advantage that lightsaber has against other blades, fact it can be activated and deactivated and created tricky style, that use this effect. This style focus on quick end of fight. It didn't become popular, because Jedi found it dishonorable way of fighting and Siths prefer long fights, that allows them to draw power of dark side during it. Elements of this style still exist as special tricks, that Jedi and Sith use in fight, but I don't know actual user of this style. Which is pity, because this style is most light side style of fighting of them all, at least for me.
You are correct, and the style, though never an official Form, was called Trákata.
I also hate it when my opponent lag-switches their lightsaber.
So some people learned to turn their lightsaber off at times and almost cheat in a duel. Real genius
Light whip is about to be in canon too
I can just imagine someone blocking and their opponents blade disappears and they fall on yours😂
Seems like a good way to also get the user killed. Get them in an overhead saber lock so that if the saber goes out, yours plunges into their body. Trakata being stigmatized really seems more like a narrative cop out to avoid having to actually address why such an insanely effective aspect of saber use is never depicted on film. Otherwise it would be a standard move.

Have you ever watched The Phantom Menace?
Do you remember Qui-gon saying "He can see things before they happen...that's why he appears to have such unnaturally quick reflexes"?
Force users have borderline precognition. They would know when their lightsaber would flicker, and be able to act acordingly, so that they could inconvenience their opponent, instead of themselves, when it did.
The cycle speed would have to be very fast to avoid swinging and just missing. Effectively it becomes something that is impossible to reliably block or block with while in flicker-mode. Not an incredible upgrade if it catches on, but as a rare trick it would be quite disorienting. And unless you're fighting a merciful opponent, you only get once chance to adapt.

It doesn't go on and off at random. The user does it in certain situations making it like magic, but if i was a jedi or sith id definitely use it. Its op
