  • Monique and her manager (also her husband) released a video wherein they compare the box office numbers of 'Almost Christmas' (Mo'nique's More Recent Comedic Film) and 'Snatched' (Amy Schumer's most recent Comedic Film). In this video I discuss this argument and also discuss her comments made on Sway In The Morning.

This is and has been from the start clearly a NEGOTIATION issue with Mo’Nique’s team. They offered her $500K she counters back with $10M. Huh??? What??? So Netflix rightly said “we aren’t going to see eye to eye” and called it a day. Is Monique worth $500,000? No she’s clearly worth more but is she worth $10 million? Hell no! Personally I don’t even think Amy Schumer was worth that $13 million that she negotiated but guess what? *she negotiated it* . Monique made the mistake of asking for too much right out of the gate and shutting the negotiation down prematurely. Box office success, social media following, consistent work in comedy, mainstream appeal. Relevance, reputation, and relevance are all factors that go into the final offer, and she’s not looking at all of the variables that went into this decision.

Exactly! She's funny and talented she just has to get back in the game (not doing immoral things for fame but engaging in modern platforms).
Thanks again for your insightful comment Girl!

I also find it interesting that, by Mo'Nique's own admission, she's never been offered much money for anything. If the whole cast of Almost Christmas made less than one million, then I don't understand why she keeps turning her nose up at offers in the hundreds of thousands?! I understand she wants millions, but she may have to work her way up to those salaries. She was paid $50K for Precious, but turned down $300K for that Richard Pryor flick and now turned down $500K from Netflix! It doesn't make sense. Does she want jobs or not?

Yea I noticed that as well. She said many of her offers were low. I think she does a lot of "favors" and "solids" which hurts her in the end. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment !

Amy Schumer's Deal was negotiated before Snatched was released. Therefore, we would need to compare Trainwreck and Almost Christmas (in terms of box office) in order to ascertain whether the offer was reasonable.
There were many other deal options that could've been worked out her.
However, I think 500,000 was so insulting to her team that they refused to negotiate further.
Now, there's a great opportunity for those high profile entertainers who are supporting her vocally to do so financially. Perhaps if they do that all of this controversy will work in Mo'nique's favor to hype up the project even more and make it an even bigger success.
    What do you guys think?
*Correction* Deray Davis has almost 4x the amount of IG followers as Mo'nique

Good video! My opinion has not changed. Monique is hurting herself at this point. She needs a real manager - one who knows the business and knows how to negotiate. As a lawyer, you learn about negotiating, and countering a $500K offer with $10 million is outrageous! No wonder the talks immediately shut down. Netflix was probably authorized to go as high as $3 million, and she might have been able to negotiate $5 million, but her husband doesn't know what he's doing.

I agree! They probably could've done 5 million but there were a lot of hurt feelings which ultimately held the negotiations back.

I don’t think she could have gotten $5 mill. She is still not that big of a draw. None of her past specials have pulled in big numbers. As funny as she is, she ain’t selling out anything but clubs. Comedians that sell out large theaters rarely get those big deals and Monique isn’t currently on that level.
And as bad as Amy Schumer’s last special did, I doubt anyone but Chapelle, Rock, Seinfeld and Kevin Hart will get 8 figure offers. The reason Netflix talked about their budget was they can’t gamble the way they did with Schumer.
Still, I think having a completely inexperienced manager is a huge liability. After the Oscar, she should have been signed to a shark of a manager or firm. With the way Hollywood is, a 50 year old, plus sized, Black woman ain’t who they are writing vehicles for. She needed a team of highly connected managers.

hhtmadaisy That's great! I heard she did great in the film too! It's just hard to quantify her individual impact within a negotiation in my opinion. Thank you for watching and commenting!

Train Wreck came out in 2015? Her special was in 2017 ?

She and her husband are delusional. She was so fortunate that Daniels gave her a breakout role in Precious. And by the way $50,000 is not chump change for an actor with a thin resume .
She received an Oscar for Precious. That has nothing to do with negotiating a COMEDY special.
I would also submit that you're using the word "legend" loosely. She had a successful comedy career but she hasn't been working. She won an Oscar 9 years ago and has been hired twice since. How that qualifies as a "legend " I'm not quite sure.

tony head thank you for your well-written comment! I think Monique is a legend in her niche which is primarily the African-American community. Before she stopped working, I think she was the most recognizable black female comedian in our community. I believe this is why she was given a show on BET. However you are correct in saying that she has taken a long break (very possibly an involuntary one) and that her influence doesn't extend far in other demographics. Anyway, my point is you're not wrong per se. I think term is relative. Thanks for watching and subscribing!!

I would say Monique is a legend but you can say that about a lot of Def Comedy Jam and Comic View comedians. VERY FEW of them are packing stadiums and doing the numbers Amy Schumer, Chris Rock or Chapelle are doing.
Monique isn’t even in the top tier of that lot and her specials have never had the viewership/ratings that command 8 figure offers. If the demand was there for Monique’s stand up networks would be fighting for her and she’d be able to finance her own stadium tour. SHE knows she can’t do that kind of tour, if she could she most definitely would. She doesn’t believe in herself enough to set up a big tour but she wants the same pay as comedians who have successfully done big tours.

    Amy - Snatched Grossed $45 mil with a $42mil budget = $3 mil profit.
    Played in 3511 theaters
    Monique - Almost Xmas Grossed $42mil with a $17mil budget = $25 mil profit.
    Played in 2379 theaters
Solved: Monique you’re looking at this the wrong way but imma make sense of
It for you. Amys movie played in 3511 theaters. Your movie played in 2379 theaters.
Thats a difference of 1132 theaters in Amys favor. The average movie theater (look it up) has a capacity of 200-300 people. Lets do the math. 1132 (theaters) x 200 (people) = 226400 more people Amy potentially reached than you. Lets do 300. 1132 (theaters) x 300 (people) = 339600 more people Amy potentially reached than you. Tickets for Amy at MSG were anywhere from $41.60 to $118.90. lets do the math. 226400 (people/tickets) x $41.60 per ticket = $9,418,240. 226400 x $118.90 = $26,918,960. I don’t even need to do the math on 339600 people. This is how much MORE money Amy could potentially earn than Monique. Men lie women lie… but numbers don’t. She said “please make it make sense”… done.
Look at the movie covers for both Snatched and Almost Christmas and you'll see the difference. Snatched cover has just 2 people Amy and Goldie. Almost Christmas cover has 14 different people and I had to really LOOK to see that Monique was one of them. Monique needs a new attitude and new management.

She was promoted as the star of the movie. You kind of don't understand the movie business. Also you need to check facts off of imdb and off the internet there are plenty of books and magazines where the only state factual events people change pick and choose what a on the internet there also just straight lies on the internet.

hhtmadaisy which portion of the video are you referring to when you said I don't understand? And I did get information from IMDb and several box office websites when comparing the histories of the people involved. That's the best source I have as to each project people have been involved in. Thanks for commenting!

Helen Belen the part about references I'm saying online people chip away at history and make up stuff. You made your point fine I'm just saying be careful with imdb Wikipedia etc I work in that field even when it comes to biographies people make up there own truths even with hugh hefner according to him he is the greatest guy on earth who loves Marilyn Monroe but according to her she never met him or even received a thank you note for the millions of dollars he made off of a picture she took several years ago ... Variety 1 is a trusted source but can be swayed

hhtmadaisy oh ok! Yes, I agree Wikipedia and other editable sources must always be taken with a grain of salt. I think in this case their use is okay since the major facts I'm presenting aren't in dispute. For example, no one is disputing that Monique's biggest film after precious was 'Almost Christmas' and that movie did well at the box office. I just wanted give you guys a visual by using those web pages.
But if I were to concede that Mo'nique was the star of Almost Christmas and we removed 'Snatched' out of the equation (due to fact it's profits were not known when Amy Schumer negotiated her deal with Netflix) do you believe that Mo'nique's argument still stands and she should've be offered 10 million initially? Interested in your perspective. Thanks!
