You’re lucky, changing my brother in laws it split at the top when I tried taking it off after dealer did his first ever change. I could barely move it with a 1/2 bar and a socket over the filter tool. Ive been changing oil in my families cars for 3 years now and never broken a Toyota filter housing until now.
Do your own oil changes people. Just bought a 2016 4Runner from a Toyota dealership. They were the last one to do an oil change in it before I bought it. Filter housing was leaking and so was the drain pan bolt. The couldn’t even pour the oil in the engine straight. Amsoil signature is the best oil money can buy, and beyond worth it.
Nice review, I us AMSOIL in my 2023 Tacoma. I took my Tacoma to the dealership for its first oil change and the technician stripped the screw on my skid plate. So from that time I change my oil in my Tacoma. I will always use AMSOIL, it’s just great oil. Cheers
I solved the problem once and for all. I got the Baxter performance kit and now I use the Mobile M1-102A spin on filter. For the next ten years my oil changes will be quick and easy.
Had the same problem changing the oil in my 2015 SR5. Had to take it to a shop and they broke some of the plastic fins off of the sides trying to get it off...they eventually had to use a breaker bar. I'll be changing out the plastic housing for a metal one the next time I need to change the oil...Thanks for the video!

2:27 Little shortcut I just found while front on jack stands, just taking those 2 first 10mm bolt and the middle pin only and that will allow you to swing the skid plate down enough to access the oil filter. Mad props doing this on rocky surface
I would never take my vehicle to a dealer for anything. I bought a new 2019 Tacoma and have done all the maintenance myself. They offer 2yr 24 thousand free oil change. No thanks. This is a good video why you should never use the dealer. Also I was told by a mechanic who worked at a Toyota dealership that they get their oil in bulk and it is recycled oil not new oil. I want new fresh oil in my 45 thousand dollar vehicle.
Had a FJ with the metal filter on top. Took 10 minutes to change the oil. Got my 2016 TRD PRO 4Runner, and have to battle the 30lb skid plate, and that stupid cartridge filter. First change required a pipe for leverage, to break it loose. I use Amsoil in my 350z, but mobile 1 in the Toyota, but I do use the Amsoil oil filter for extended intervals. Super quality oil filter. BTW, your filter housing was so tight, you were moving the whole truck, trying to break it loose.
Had the same issue this past weekend (06 IS350) it has an aluminum filter cap. Sucker was overtightened and broke one of the teeth on this same exact tool you have but it still grabbed the flutes on the cap at least. Noticed it's just a hair too big but used a sheet of paper in between the tool and the cap to get it to "grab". After a bit more of struggling I finally broke it loose.
Nice video, I to use AMSOIL in my cars you should really consider using the AMSOIL Filter too. It's more expensive but well worth the money for the extented drain intervals
Dealerships typically assign the newer or lower seniority guys to do oil changes. You might even get a "newby". If shop manager has trained his people right AND goes behind them on a regular basis, and asks questions then shop will be trust worthy. I have found if one department of a dealership is sub par chances are the rest are too.
I love my 4Runner, but god it's annoying to change the oil compared to my truck ... I just bought this 4Runner a couple weeks ago, used with 115,000kms. Did an oil change right away and some of the bolts to the skid plate were on the rusty side so they stripped on the way out. Ah well, still holds the skid plate in but I'll have to tap new threads in soon before the next oil change. It was a hassle getting to the oil filter because I couldn't actually get the skid plate off fully!
I had a dealership not change my oil after saying they did. I got curious changed it myself after 50 miles after dealership changed it it was pitch black no way they changed it. Needless to say I’ll never take it back to them.
When your oil filter cap is stuck on like that instead of using just the ⅜ extension it would be better to use a ½ inch drive socket to fit over the oil filter cap wrench with a breaker bar. Otherwise those wrenches (believe it or not) have been known to break especially if they are made out of cast metal.
I ran into the same issue with the filter so I replaced it with a metal alum housing because that plastic broke when I tried to loosen it. Another thing I do on o rings is petroleum jelly. I used it on airplanes oil, fuel, air, and hydraulic parts through out my career.
I'd be careful using petroleum jelly on rubber o-rings. The petroleum jelly will cause the o-ring to expand and can lock up a tapered fittings. I worked in the water pumping and filtration world for years and it never failed that anyone who used petroleum jelly was going to need big wrenches and a lot of yelling when they needed to take it apart. We learned from the o-ring manufacturers the reason and anyone who cared used a silicone based lubricant.
I'll add to the comment to NEVER let the dealer change your oil. I mistakenly took advantage of the Toyota "Care" 24K free oil changes from the dealer. My 2019 Sienna has a similar housing for the filter, made of plastic. The drain plug and filter housing were WAY over-torqued, with the housing at easily 100 ft/lbs and needed an 18" breaker bar and all my strength to remove it. What I didn't know was that the force cracked one of the fins on the housing so when I was finished and started it up, 6 quarts of 0W-20 Mobil 1 was sprayed all over the floor of my garage. When I complained to the dealer, they basically denied they did anything wrong. So definitely check your housing before reinstalling it, especially if the dealer just probably used an impact wrench to install it. It's why dealerships get such a bad name. It would have taken 5-seconds longer to just do it right and saved me time, money, and a huge headache!
Had the same grossly over-tightened housing (bought used '18 SR5 Premium with 15K miles off a lease).... had three dealership changes in that time. Took everything I had to break it loose. Replaced it with the aluminum Toyota version....and tightened to specs, should be cake next time.

I tried changing oil in my 2018 Prius and whoever installed the filter put so much force they put a huge dent in it 😂 I have up and went to the dealership if I have same issue again I’m calling them up oil changes are simple
One of the reasons I started changing my own oil, the dealer stripped two of the bolts holding the skid plate on. Second reason 3rg gen Tacoma 3.5 takes 6.2 quarts of oil, they would charge me for 7 quarts. When I requested the 0.8 balance of oil they charged me for they made light of the situation and would not give me the balance of oil nor will they only put an even 6 quarts of oil in the Tacoma because it requires 6.2 quarts of oil. Funny when dealing with greedy businesses of how it will change the outcome. Enjoy your 0.8 quarts of oil.
Also a very wise choice to use the best oil ever made. You should use the Amsoil SS oil next change. I am running it in my new GM crate engine in my Chevy and its the bomb!
Mine is stuck as well. I just used a 3 foot breaker bar and it broke the tool instead of the housing. It’s still stuck on there and I am dumbfounded on what to do 😂

Only buy one that is forged. Do not buy one that is strictly a cap wrench that does not have teeth. Do not buy one that claims to fit all models or even all four cylinders. The 2.0 and 2.5 liter four cylinder engines use the same oil filter cap wrenches as the six and eight cylinder engines use. If your oil filter comes with two o-rings & a drain tool then your oil filter cap takes the same wrench as the six and eight cylinder engines. Some companies claim their wrench works for all four cylinders but on the 2.5 liter engines that smaller wrench does not engage the teeth on the wrench to the tabs on the oil filter cap. It may work if your oil filter cap is not stuck but it is a poor choice. They are mislead.

Always make sure the teeth on the wrench are properly engaged with the tabs on the oil filter cap.

•Make sure new o-rings are properly lubricated before installing.
•Use a torque wrench to install the oil filter cap to no more than 18 ft.lbs (25 N•m). Oil filter drainplug = 10 ft.lbs. (13 N•m)

Some companies claim their wrench works for all four cylinders but on the 2.5 liter engines that smaller wrench does not engage the teeth on the wrench to the tabs on the oil filter cap. It may work if your oil filter cap is not stuck but it is a poor choice. They are mislead.
