How to change broken oil cap with broken tabs on Toyota Rav 4 2012

  • In this video we are taking an oil cap off a Toyota Rav 4. The problem that made it so hard to take off was, it was stuck and the tabs broke off because it was so tight. What we did to take it off was to cut it and melt it off. A very long and tedious process where we used a dremel and a torch to take it off. The dremel did the cutting and the torch heated a flat head screw driver to melt the plastic. As the plastic melted down and became brittle. It made it easier to break the rest of the oil cap off.
We have affiliate links listed below which are the tools we used to take the oil caps off. We do make commissions off these links from Amazon.

Hey guys, thanks for the inspiration - I came up with a different, easier solution (YMMV) in my case.
Just had this miserable experience with the oil filter housing over the weekend right before a road trip. Despite torquing to the correct spec last time +-5 ftlb, my filter wrench (with proper teeth) broke 2 plastic tabs on our '17 Highlander. We were supposed to leave on a road trip the following day. I put some oil in and confirmed that the tab breakage caused a micro-crack which was letting oil drip.
    My solution was:
1> Align filter wrench on the filter housing
2> Marked a spot on the *side* of the wrench where I could get a more or less straight line with a drill from underneath the truck
3> Put filter wrench on its side, drilled a 1/8" pilot hole for self-tapping screw
4> Put filter wrench on the filter housing and drilled a 1" self-tapping screw through pilot hole into filter housing (it was a goner anyway)
After the screw was tightened down and sunk into the plastic oil filter housing, the thing was ANCHORED to the wrench. The next pull with a 1/2" breaker bar broke it loose easily.
Replaced with aluminum Dorman unit from O'Reilly until Toyota aluminum housing can be ordered.
Hope my solution can work for someone out there too.

This comment was a lifesaver. I have been fighting with this cap for over 2 hours, and in the process broke the cap and the cap wrench. After reading this I welded the nut back onto the cap wrench, screwed it to the cap and it came off like nothing. Thank you sir

Don’t use those aluminum filter caps- they are not specked properly-the spring is an important very fined tuned spring & can not be duplicated for oil flow regulations like the original

All you need to do is drill a hole through both sides of the plastic oil filter housing at mid point of cap, use a long 1/4 drill bit, run 6 " - 8" screw driver thru both holes, and s[pin it off counter clock wise, took me 7 min...had same issue. These guys were smart to replace with better aluminum housing, I did as well....

I'm glad I found your video and read the comments, Toyota fail in my opinion by overthinking on oil filter cap. It really doesn't need to be this complicated to change your own oil but for the sake of improving things they makes a simple job hard to do now. Thanks a lot Toyota!!! 🙄🙄🙄🙄

Usually only ⅛ of a turn after it bottoms out is all it takes for 18 ft.lbs. Then the drainbolt on the oil filter cap should only be 9 ft.lbs.

Be careful when your cutting it, you need to have a steady hand to not mess up the threads. Good luck I actually like the aftermarket part better than the original part on this one, they really didn’t think this one through.

For all of you INSTALLING the oil filter cap - The WORST part of all of this is that the O-ring is installed in what is called a "static radial seal" which achieves full sealing as soon as the o-ring is fully engaged with the mating bore. any further tightening does NOTHING other than seat the housing to prevent it from unscrewing. Toyota even included a metal tab to prevent this (on intact housings 😛 so anything more than hand tight is totally unnecessary.

I tried doing the hole through the wrench/screw, and the screwdiver through it too and basically just ended up doing what yall did, minus the dremel tool. Mine just started breaking apart. Shame that the aluminum aftermarket filter cover says toyotas/lexus 05-17. Damn how long do they need to know this plastic ish is garbage?

turn more on this one is a mistake . . When the rim of filter housing touching the engine block that's it ,there's no gasket to absorb any more further tightening .

  • @garyesada5766

I'm thinking that when you lube the treads that it goes on too far when torqueing. You know like lug nuts. If you put ant seize then when you torque it it goes on farther. The oil makes it go on further so maybe you need less torque. Something to think about.

Everyone who has this system should be prepared for a worse case scenario especially if this is the first time you're doing this.
In case of a Stuck Oil Filter
Make sure you have the following...
    1. The proper Motivx* oil filter cap wrench. Item #MX2320 is for all Toyota/Lexus/Scion engines 2.0 liters and larger using a cartridge style oil filter or item #MX2321 is for all engines smaller than 2.0 liters using a cartridge style filter.
    2. A 27 mm ½ inch drive socket
    3. A ½ drive breaker bar (18 inches or longer in length. An extension may be needed for some models.)
If an oil filter cap seems difficult to remove, only the above items should be used (or equivalent tools). Do not simply use a ⅜ inch drive ratchet or ratchet with extension as these will sometimes result in breakage of the oil filter cap wrench or the oil filter cap.
Always make sure the teeth on the wrench are properly engaged with the tabs on the oil filter cap.
To prevent reoccurrence of the problem
•Make sure new o-rings are properly lubricated before installing.
    •Use a torque wrench to install the oil filter cap to no more than 18 ft.lbs (25 N•m). Oil filter drainplug = 9 ft.lbs. (12.5 N•m)
    * If you think the Motivx tools are too expensive at least consider the following... Do not buy an oil filter cap wrench that is made from cast aluminum. Only buy one that is forged. Do not buy one that is strictly a cap wrench that does not have teeth. Do not buy one that claims to fit all models or even all four cylinders. The 2.0 and 2.5 liter four cylinder engines use the same oil filter cap wrenches as the six and eight cylinder engines use. Only the 1.8 and 1.3 liter engines use a different size oil filter cap and oil filter cap wrench. If the oil filter for your four cylinder vehicle comes with one o-ring instead of two then your vehicle takes the same wrench as a Prius or Corolla (unless it's a six cylinder). If your oil filter comes with two o-rings & a service pipe for draining the filter then your oil filter cap takes the same wrench as the six and eight cylinder engines. Some companies claim their wrench works for all four cylinders but on the 2.5 liter engines that smaller wrench does not engage the teeth on the wrench to the tabs on the oil filter cap. It may work if your oil filter cap is not stuck but it is a poor choice. They are mislead.
For those that don't believe this is a problem...

The 2nd gen Motivx tool doesn’t use slots for the teeth, they say it can break them off. It just depends on the flutes to remove the housing.
