- Picking a final paint color has been extremely hard! Paint isn't cheap and the wrong color car really ruin the look of an old hot rod. In my head I wanted a bright red 1957 Chevy convertible. How hard can that be? VERY HARD, there are so many shades of red!
At the end of the day I found a color the will work (I hope). Let me know what you guys think the the comments.

Hey dan if you think a color is almost the shade you want make a test panel up with good coverage coats of white, grey, red, and black primers lightly sand and shoot your color of choice then drag it out in the sun and see if you get a color closer to what you have in mind. The color shift will be noticeable . We also used to get a fish eye reducer in little plastic bulbs you mixed in to help eliminate it, you can up the amount of reducer in your mix and use a little more hardener with not too many issues. On the primers try from left to right go white then grey , red followed by black your finished color will be lightest on left gradually getting deeper colored as you go to the right, the color shift will be subtle but it will be there you may get exactly what you are looking for good luck Doug
Best paint tip I’ve heard in a while.
Correct Doug, going from a red primer to a white primer can really change the look of red paint in the sun. Also how many coats of wax you put on top will bring out the red deeper if you don't like to much orange. I was amazed that multiple coats of wax over red will make the red darker. ( until the wax fades then the orange comes back) And your right, you can double up on the hardener, plus the last 2 coats of paint, reduce the heck out of it to get the peel to lay out smooth. If you get a few runs, no big deal, that's what wet sanding is for.
Thanks for the tip man.
@@DDSpeedShop If you want a brighter red than what you have, just add some yellow to the mix. I did a budget paint job on a VW 30 years ago & I used mixed one gallon of red Canadian Tire Red to one quart of Canadian Tire yellow. Then I cleared the car. It looked great then & still looks pretty good now................yeah, I still own the car : )
P
I think it would look a pile different on grey primer compared to red oxide
Look for Chevy Bel-Air cherry red is what it's called
The front looks way better than the rear. The rear improved after a couple coats of clear. However, the front red is the "Clear" winner!! Lol!! Cheers!!
Paint it white paint cheaper
You donot or a oranges color
When spraying reds. Always use a white or light grey base so you don’t need that much paint.
The tractor red is by far way nicer, can’t wait to see the car that color.
Totally agree
Don't forget it is way cheaper.
Hey Dan! Looks good... Nice to see you're well-stocked with parts for the next car as well! Cheers from Alberta...
Never have to many parts haha
So, the orignal "matador red" looks very similar to the red paint you have already spryed on the car days ago...
Definitely go with the bright look. That 57 needs to stand out and shine. ✌️😎👍
Dad used to spray alot of Tractor / Industrial paint on cars and trucks in the 1970`s.....Much cheaper and always looked good.....My F-150 looked great in IH Fleet Red...
i use RUSTOLEUM SAFETY RED Gallon can size IT is BRIGHT RED color !!
I'm trying to decide on a color for my old F150 and I'm actually digging the ugly Matador red... for my pickup, not for a topless '57.
Yellow does a good job of hiding sketchy bodywork.
Also, thank you for NOT painting it yellow. Uugh.
The coating store on line whole paint kits clear, coats, reducers, Hardner's 298.00 gm colors
WOW I would like to get matador red for 700.00. I just bought a gallon of PPG base coat Matador red and it cost 1300.00 here in California. The clear was 726.34. for my 57 . Price for materials here in California is crazy high.
Hahahahaha, the red toner I used on my firewall and wheels cost $250.00 a quart, plus catalist and reducer another $200.00. That was in 1997. You got off cheap at $700.00
Gotta love the Tremclad, living on these Manitoba gravel roads I’ve paint many trucks/cars with it!! Lol
Smoke grey or black. Sick to death of resale red! My truck is red. Im painting it anthracite grey. New mustang color.
I’m sure it’s too late, but if you want a great red red not orange red, I highly advise a SAAB color called Imola Red… I had my 72 Buick Sprayed that color and it was perfect.
Hey Dan, fellow Canadian here. where are you getting the implement paint from? doing a 65 f100 and trying to get some Allis Chalmers Persian orange #2
Either way suits
That tractor colour makes me
think of old Ford Poppy Red
jus sayin I like it
Boyd Coddinton added some brown I think.Should be a buck a drop!Lol
Hopefully this ole girl won’t have anyone saying DD speed shop 200 times a video 😂 oh I love the Albertans
Least you can get cheap paint that looks good, we pay 300 for 4 litres off car paint but red is always more expensive here in New Zealand, so I will look for a new place to buy it from when I'm ready to do a project car, I got my Rav4 painted with rattle can paint lol but it turned out okay, as a dayley driver and will get damaged on the way, now fixings the power steering pump, then get it back on the road to drive 😀🤙🏼
That implement is a great eye catcher . Wander what the suv rate is to the factory paint. Bet its pretty good, being implement paint..I'm a big fan of implement paint.👍👍
Ferrari tractor red.....definitely my choice.....
Back in the day I painted a VW with Massey Furgeson red from Tractor Supply. I wish I had put some hardener in it. It looked great but it faded. Red is the most expensive color there is.
Back in 69 a friend of mine had new Nova, 350 4 speed, it was dark green and he didn't like it he had a friend who worked for the Michigan county road commission, and got a gallon of paint from him when they finished painting the Nova it looked real sharp, so your not the first to paint something with paint you wouldn't rely think of using paint like that.' and i forgot to say it was orange like the county trucks.
Clear doesn't really protect the paint. You can more easily rub out the red when it fades if you rub on the color and not clear.
So the red on the front of the fender. Will you clear on top of that? I ask cause I have painted with tractor paint in the past and it would always fade to almost a mat finish. So just wondering if clearing it would be the fix for that. Thanks buddy and keep up the good work. You are starting to inspire me to get the paint gun back out. Been about 20 years lol.
Wrong respirator still.
Pink for particles, charcoal for chemicals
I painted my tractor with tractor paint 15 years ago added hardner it still looks great now. The tractor spends a fair amount off time in the sun and hasn't faded yet
lotta chevy guys used "competition orange"..looked like that orangie/red color you got there.
Also, when you paint a vehicle, Dani should match her nails and hair to it lol
Or nails and lipstick. 🤷🏻♀️
Tractor paint looks awesome
It was a good Idea I was in to Tractor store last week And saw this paint And surprised the price difference So i will try the Black on a camaro Black is Black right
new holland red is a real nice red.....tractor supply is where i get it...looks real nice with clear coat
The only problem with cheap Amazon paint and tractor paint it chips easy
How many gallon compressor are you using? What cfm is your gun?
That orange color if you put it over red primer will backing it a little or on grey primer will give you that color you have now...
I agree with your choice. If your driving a 57 "Ragtop", you want it to be seen a mile away.
With reds, yellows, always use white primer to achieve the best color you want.
Always use a white sealer under red if you want a brighter color when finished so much shows through red paint it almost like a base coat clear even if single stage, try it out sometimes .
Okay go with tractor paint change the color to John Deere green with the yellow gold pinstriping and make sure you wear overalls and a straw hat when you drive it hahahaha
Keystone cops in the helicopter must be investigating a chop shop in the area. ;-)
After reading/watching a lot of internet “experts” I ended up with a 5-2-1 mix of implement paint, acetone, hardener and then added a cap full of Japan drier. It sprayed great through a HF cheap gun, slowed together smooth and shiny and dried quick.
hey dan, only my opion andaddvice, if you do not clear coat the massy or IH reds, they will fade really bad in the first 3 years. and will affect the colours you seem to desire. go drive by massy lot and IH lots and see the paints in their natural inviroments. the Case IH red is a deeper so say rich red? as massy in my eyes is just here i am red, red.? being a farm girl i see alot of farm stuff and can tell you i like case IH red better than most.
💯 definitely otherwise it turns chalky white
Clear keep the paint from fading as much on tractor paint . Painted many a tractor and all have clear coats on them .
62 corvette red or viper red may be close to what you are looking for. but the tractor paint looks pretty good.
Try the tractor paint on different color primers. You might get closer to the color shade your looking for 👌🏻👌🏻
I'll just wing it haha
Good choice...now hurry up and paint the whole car!!😎
Love the tractor paint!!! Just be sure to clear it or it’ll fade.
grey primer or white is best for red paint red oxide will bleed thru and change color
ford out sold Chevy in 57, where are all the 57 Fords now?
Have you tried TCP Global for the paint your looking for. I painted my 66 ford f100 torch red and white and people always stop and give me the thumbs up.
That rattle can red might look better with gray primer under it.
I used Implement paint on my 2000 Silverado. It was so close to the Factory Red that it blended very nicely. Keep up the good work Dan.
I believe the mixture of matador red you have is not a cross match to matador red lacquer.
It indicates the formulation your paint supplier has may not be ccorrect
I worked for a trucking company that tried to keep all our rolling stock white. The guy who did the painting used anything and everything; house paint, implement, automotive. He didn't care, whatever was cheap, and the results showed. Mismatched shades of white, improperly applied paint, incompatible paint for surface, you name it. We had some used freight box trucks that came with yellow FRP boxes. He painted it with white latex house paint without any prep other than pressure washing. End result, white paint peeled off in a year. We ended up sanding it off, prepping with deglosser and sprayed it with implement paint with hardener. Result, a good paint job that stayed.
I would have gone with the Case-IH red. It comes out a darker, more "Fire Engine" red.
I used the implement paint on my truck and I did use clear on it and I like it
Du hast eine komische personlichkeit, du guter Mann.
Fresh blood / dried blood .....go with the bright red
Speedkote automotive paint supplies
Try mixing the colors together you might be suprised with the results
💯 I’ve had good luck mixing Rustoleum colors for a custom color
The tractor paint (synthetic enamel) is subject to chalking/oxidizing and can take significant time to dry/harden. Definitely use the hardener because it improves gloss, reduces oxidation, and dries/hardens much quicker. Even with hardener, the paint will oxidize however. On a car, indoor storage and keeping car waxed is key. My experience with clear over synthetic enamel is they tend to peel off... but, I just may have not been using a high enough quality clear.
Clear coat makes all the difference in longevity.
Totally
your rust repair on the truck is already in need of attention... or not.
Is that bright red/orange D747 from T and T Nail Salon? It looks just like my manicure! 🤣 Love it!
Hahaha I like your style!
The Matador red looks like red oxide primer.
that massey ferguson paint is the ticket
Hey Dan! I actually like the dark red! Sunlight makes a big difference on the colors from the 50s! Catch you next time 👍
You could dump a little IH red in there to counter the orange.
I would say if u put the red over gray primer it would change it somewhat.
That's AMC Matador red....
Pile on 5-6 coats of paint, let it dry for a week, wet sand with 400 and clear. Done, good as it'll get.
Agreed
Put some metallic in the clear and it will pop
mada dor red GM w as a ma roon
Having done many implement paint jobs on cars, go 50% reduction and many coats
Do stands for dirty Dan or dangerous dan?
go the cheaper route its just a daily street car anyhow and it looked good to me 👍👍👍👍
That Matador Red is the colour I remember on those old Chevy's. Maybe not the '57 colour exactly. Any whos I do like the other red better is you're looking for the colour to pop. Be safe and stay well.
Massey Ferguson red really looks good. . I've use tractor paint a lot on truck frames. I add a little more reducer to it about 5% more than it calls for and use a paint strainer to fill the spray gun. And if you have access to paint shaker use that it mixes up very well.
ConFERGable?
that color sucks
I’ve found to mix it closer to 4:3:1. Better to be too thin than thick. Also make sure the paint materials are at inside room temperature
You can call it Lamborghini red, they started building farm tractors......
LV THE FIRE-RED PAINT. MY '56 CHEVY BEL AIRE 2 DOOR HARDTOP WAS VERMILLION RED, FACTORY TWO-TONE STYLE WITH REFRIGERATOR WHITE -- A STRIKING AND BOLD GREAT LOOKER!!!
Due to the high co$t of auto paint, oil enamal is becoming more appealing. You be amazed what kind of AMAZING colors can happen when you mix in some rustolem "aluminum" paint. John deere green mixed with aluminum made my dash look AMAZING. Obviously with a urethane clear over it
The cheap paint looks better
Almost 64.5 mustang high performance orange
Go cheaper it just looks better
Sorry Dan, but that does not look like 1957 Chevy Matador red. Maybe it's modern day Matador red, but whatever it is, it's not my choice.
I'm voting for the Tractor Red!!!!
My old boss had a Steiner green mustang . I had a Camaro with maroon emeron paint it was painted by the green river killer smh
Painted my '66 Ford F100 IH Red and my '40 Ford Coupe Satin Black Rust Oleum-
NOTE.. look at colors choices outside under natural light... not inside under light bulbs
Tractor paint has no depth, it's for tractors.
Ffs just buy a kit from eastwood, $400, you actually have a bc/cc situation far better than hardened enamel.
Maybe you like doing things twice...
So is it the Massey Ferguson red that you ended up liking? After the introduction you called what you actually tried "tractor" every time so it's not clear.
As I mentioned a couple of videos ago, have you tried Rustoleum (up there Tremclad) "safety red?" It might only be available in gallons, but it's worth it, it's sort of like the Massey but "classier," or richer colored.
I think tractor paint belongs on a car that has plaid flannel seat covers.
Am I the only one that thinks the fender looks like a cyclops with is mouth open 🤣🤨🤨😆. Natural light, even overcast is much better than Fluro or LED...
I would go with neither of those colours. Needs a shade in between. The tractor paint looks a bit too orange.
No primer????
Try Volvo BM red. Believe it’s RAL 3500. Really deep dark red. This one bill not sun fade like the more brighter reds will.
Didn’t you just get that Chevy pickup in the driveway? It’s rusting already? I have color chip charts for ‘57 Chevy’s and Matador Red is the proper paint name. That other red really pops, though.
I've seen some guys mix that stuff 50/50. They say it sprays like regular stuff..... down side is it takes longer to dry in colder weather
Something between the two would be more acceptable. The Chev red is kinda nasty, the implement red is kind too orange. Maybe is should be the Picador red ? Or perhaps the flame red U-502) would work. Then there's the Cardinal red, the Seminole red, the Bonneville red, the Rio red, the Festival red, and Tartan red. You could match the interior. Paint it tartan red in a real tartan pattern. The red would look redder against the black...😁😁
