    Derek's blastbeat is a proper machine gun. Not some wimpy tapping like some of the other guys that are fast but can't get enough power to the strokes.

      Dude. My favorite death metal has the soft taps, they literally make the whole song for that.

    I remember seeing him play live with Hate Eternal back around 2001-ish(?), when he'd laid down the drums for Nile's second album, "Black Seeds of Vengeance". I got to talk to him after that insane set, and he was super cool. Even laughed out loud when I told him what my GF at the time thought of his drumming ("This drummer is an ATHLETE!!!" were her exact words). Good times!

    My biggest issue with my blast attempts is that my left arm tenses up a lot. So much to the point that my wrists/fingers just shut down.

    • @A7xTheRev98
      @A7xTheRev98 5 лет назад +2

      I’ve had this same issue. One thing I’ve started doing to remedy this is something I got from my personal teacher. Take a practice pad and set a tempo where you’re comfortable (right now for me it’s 150bpm). Set a timer for say 5 minutes and do the strokes emphasizing the motion of the wrists. Over-exaggerating the motion will help to develop all the muscles needed to play at higher tempos much faster. Think of it like lifting weights - to build the muscle properly you have to go through the full range of motion. My teacher emphasizes that full range of motion concept constantly. Hope this can help you like it has for me :)

  • @Phlfwlr

    Maybe it's just hard to hear and see lol but while watching his blast beats in slow motion it seems like they aren't synchronized

    • @derekkinney2277
      @derekkinney2277 7 лет назад +7

      I've yet to see anyone's blast beats stand up to that kind of scrutiny. The difficulty of hearing the 32nd note off beat combined with the endurance challenge means that most blast beats performed by a human will end up being kind of flammy. Almost all recorded drums are edited these days though, so it gives the illusion that everyone out there is blasting perfectly.

    Playing from the shoulders sounds like asking for an injury no?

    • @blackmetalden

      Not at all, why would you think that?

    • @heldertiago124
      @heldertiago124 7 лет назад +2

      It takes more energy than using the wrists, but not sure it will cause an injury.

    • @Flakum
      @Flakum 3 года назад

      For me, it sure felt like asking for an injury. A short period when i was between techniques, my left shoulder was always sore and my back was so tired from pushing the ultra fast speeds. After each song, It felt like one step closer to a back injury. I definitely do not advise using anything else but wrists and fingers. The switch grip technique gives you lots of speed, power and endurance and all from just the hand and fingers. Highly recommend learning that one properly if you're into finger and wrist blasting.

    Hey guys, next time you record in slow motion maybe it would be wiser to post a 30 fps video instead of 60 fps so that you can slow everything down even more

    • @BananaManPL
      @BananaManPL 7 лет назад +1

      you don't know how frames per second work, do you?

    • @mihaifalcusan824
      @mihaifalcusan824 7 лет назад +3

      Wojtyła I was just trying to help, my English isn't the greatest tho.. I was referring to it like the slow mo guys said - if you record something at 120 fps and view it at 30, it's 4 times slower instead of viewing it at 60 where it's only 2 times slower.

    • @BananaManPL
      @BananaManPL 7 лет назад

      While it is correct, just posting a video in 30 FPS will result in skipped frames and not slo-mo. Altering the frame count to achieve slow motion is available in editing software - not posting options - so you could've just said "next time please slow it down twice as much".

    • @BananaManPL
      @BananaManPL 7 лет назад +1

      Also I may have sounded too passive-aggressive, sorry for that, it was unnecessary.

    • @mihaifalcusan824

      Wojtyła thanks for the heads up! also I'm glad we could settle this in a peaceful manner.

    Not a huge fan of blast beats. I feel increasing the speeds requires the drummer to decrease power so much that they just feel like a washed out slog. Instead of increasing intensity they do the opposite for me. I like a metal drummer to hit hard as balls. The sound speaks for itself.

      Why choose? Play fast and good at the same time! All you're saying is that you don't like and don't understand why someone would play fast. Maybe secretly would want to be able to play fast and don't know it yet. A closeted metal drummer, if you will.
