Fluidity on the drum set is absolutely crucial in order to reach quicker speeds and maintain proper, relaxed technique in the process. This includes choreographing some basic movements and utilizing our anatomy to serve us in the most natural way.
In today's lesson, Bruce Becker will take the single paradiddle and demonstrate how to use it around the kit in an easy and efficient manner. Once you practice these motions and let them sink in, many new avenues will open up in your playing.
Let Bruce help you find the flow.

Having him play fast and then slowing down the footage was a genius idea! It really demonstrates that his perfect technique at faster speeds is the exact same is at slow speeds. This is developed from years and years of practice. I have never seen that before in a video lesson. Thank you drumeo for continuing to innovate!!
Before digital video they used to slow down the frame rate manually on film to create the same effect but there was little control at the time over the audio so it came out lower pitched, was equally effective and sounded out of this world LoL
instaBlaster...
@@Obscure_Oddities hahahaha nice one
Fluidity: my new drumming goal for 2018. Thank U Sir
Rod Chaverri Great game for the Wii, amazing soundtrack.
Rod Chaverri same! I play at my church and there are some things I'll do in practice that I won't do in a service because I'm nervous I'll be too tense
Something that I always work on..fluidity and paradiddles..this is how i put it in any music fill..Doesn't care how the song is,but paradiddle for me is the most important rudiment of all time.Greetings from Malaysia.
I love the bloopers part at the end!! I could not tell at all throughout this video that Bruce had the camera-nerves. The final product was so perfect!! Good work all!
I'm watching on 4k OLED with a sound system. I just have to say Drumeo's production value is sick. This looks amazing.
Your bad techniques sound better than mine good techniques😂
Wow that looseness in his movement was amazing!!! It’s been a while since I’ve seen such technical proficiency in basic drum patterns. That’s a skilled instructor. Much respect sir. Subscribed.
love the bloopers at the end. Hello darkness my old friend... :)
it's hard to make it look easy
That was pretty funny. That is why he left it in there. He thought it was funny when he said "sucked". I totally get it. Loved it!👍👍
Cuz sometimes I leave mine running and catch a few "ramblings" after a jam. Lol
I can't thank you enough for what just happened for me........ this has been a real eye-opener, and now, within minutes of taking your advice, I've amazed myself. Thank you Bruce Becker and Drumeo!
Thank you! I’ve been lookin for lessons like these for months. All I’m really concerned with right now as a drummer is this, having a better ‘feel’ on the drums.
“Here’s a slow paradiddle”
Okay, dude. Way too damn fast.
Of all your many many brilliant videos, this is one of my absolute favorites !!! Bravo!
Your video on fixing bad technique plus this video gave me soooo much fluidity I was in disbelief! Thank you for the simple explanation of this that so many self taught drummers like myself never hear- You are awesome sir.
Another lightbulb went off... Thank you sir .you make things easier to SEE and understand
Bruce Becker - font of knowledge and a great man.
An "aha" moment I just had: this way of playing is very similar to the way that Matt Halpern plays his cymbals. By playing in a more diagonal slice when hitting cymbals (as opposed to how most drummers, myself included, hit the cymbals by hitting them vertically), there's a significant gain in economy of motion. It's the same principle when playing an upstroke for the second stroke of the paradiddle. Why play a downstroke there if you need to immediately bring that stick back up to hit something else? Brilliantly explained, Mr. Becker! Thank you so much!
Thank you professor!!! This was much needed at 21 years old... thankful for you, Drumeo
Love this lesson! many people they'll get fluid just by playing over and over, but it's good to be concious about it! Thanks!
A couple years ago I told drumeo I wanted to improve my fluidity. They responded as if they had never heard that term before. Now they are using it 🤔
This is the problem with the electronic / e-mail / internet age - years ago you would have had a face to face discussion with a group of people and they would understand what you are getting at because you would be able to demonstrate etc. I'm really surprised and grateful this video popped up in my feed. I guess there's an upside to having Google spy on us.
Always great information from Drumeo, I use the videos for practice almost everyday! Keep up the great work.
Thanks for the lesson. As I play more it is important to be efficient to reduce injury and fatigue. Thanks again
OMG!!! Drumeo Bloopers!!! More of that PLEASE!!!
steve jobs got chops :D
I said that same shit
Dude doesn’t even look like jobs yo
Steve chops
Still funny af XD
Hahahahah
Love the outtakes at the end, and the sad reflection with Simon and/or Garfunkle.
Many thanks great advice I'll give it a go.
What a great lesson! Thanks Bruce :D
Man this guy is amazing! It's the little things like this that make drumming what it is.
Very good! Thank you!
Great video. It's always important to think about sticking and exploiting positions around the kit
awesome video my fluidity has improved everyday thx a lot!
I just found your channel and I'm a seasoned drummer (which means I'm getting on in my years hahaha). I also teach and your techniques are perfect for my students. Great videos on your channel.
Off the chibble lesson chill attitude and style easily one of the best
Bought myself an electric drum set last week. Haven't played drums in 20 years, I'm starting from scratch (well, not really). This video appears first to the "drums exercises" query and loved the lesson. Instant subscriber to your channel. Thank you!
Thanks bud for this fascinating technique
😂 cheers Bruce Becker, here up here a drum teacher up from los Angeles, appreciate ya. Starting my drumming journey. Stoked. Gratitude dudes!🥁
Bruce, thank you so much for this lesson. You really nailed the mistake I making. I'm going to practice your method of fluidity!
Thanks!!
You need to apply these techniques to your introduction ;)
Thanks for the vid!
That was awesome it seems like he was using a little bit of Moeller technique on the lateral from the Tom's to the snare bravo bravo
this video has been helpful
Excellent ❤️
dis is wat i needed!!!!
Wow i didnt know u taught Mr David Garibaldi...... Nice lesson Sir..... 😊
This was excellent and a great insight for someone like me - a novice hungry to get better.
With all due respect, your good technique slow movie part was next level. Thank you for your help sir.
Thank you for this great demonstration. The good and bad examples are a very fine way to display this fluidity matter. Still I have to say after teaching drums quite a long time too that you have to be careful with your right hand going to floor tom. Maybe it is only in my hands but I have to at all times concetrate on keeping my wrist at the same position as when hitting the snare.
Wow nice drumming tip(s)..
THANK YOUUU SIRRR
Muito bom!!
Great lesson ... thanks ... and don't forget the traditional grip players!!!!
i live in the middle of no where so i had to teach myself. i love it that a person can watch free videos online.
Thank you ☺👍
Great lesson. Great gag reel.
Nice!
great video excellent ending
The slowed down section at 03:22 really reminds me of Scooby Snacks by Fun Lovin Criminals.
Great lesson Drumeo, especially for a metal drummer like me, because you don't relax as Much when you play fast... 👍🏼
I've found on every instrument that I've learned thus far that in order to get to near max speed one has to be as relaxed as can be.
thats why I am always fascinated watching Gene Hoglan destroy a kit as it looks like he is just gently making a sandwhich on a lazy Saturday ..haha
Yeah there is one gig by Opeth in Shepherds Bush in London where I was watching the drummer play masters apprentice, and i swear he was actually just thinking about what will be on the table for dinner :D
Haha the last part “hello darkness my old friend sniff ” lol
Watched this... Learned it in 10 minutes wasted 6 years of my life on personal lessons lol been playing 10 years next month thanks for fixing up my technique
Him:
Hello darkness my old friend.
Darkness:
I have a boyfriend.
Lol. I love vids with bloopers included in the end. Hahahaha
Epic slow mo
SO SHWEEEETTT...much love Tee with LIONS NAMED LEO.[the music worldwide}
soooo cool...GREAT VIDEO..!!
Thanks again Bruce and thank you DRUMEOOOOO!wish I had this this when I started playing years ago . Did you say you're in L.A.I thought DRUMEO was in Vancouver?
Thank u
Grandmaster bruce
How do you break the bad habit that you’re demonstrating? I have it bad! And I am a drumeo student. Is there any videos you can recommend. Or personal advice you can recommend? Thank you!
lmao that didn't suck! I liked the peace at the end :)
before this year ends, I challenged myself.
my paradiddle has become way faster and even sounds better using this technique.
I love the bloopers HAHAHA
Would love to take lesson from you!
Nice job Bruce .LOL funny but nice
When I'm jamming with my cousin I usually just stick to what I can rely on to make the music pop and I save complicated stuff for when we're gonna transition into another part of the song
The finish on those drums tho.... BOING!
Prince of Drumeo: The Drums of Time 😂
A good lesson, although I, as a drum teacher, never believed in the method of showing what not to do. I think it may be a bit destructive. The display of what is right to do is good and in my opinion it is quite sufficient. Wondering what Bruce's position on the subject.
What size are the toms?
Pretty much you're guiding the drumstick bounce from one tom to another. Trigger fingers and wrist movement over arm?
This is similar to golf. Holding the club to tight can make a shot not travel as far. Have to be loose.
EL DOCENTE QUIERE TOCAR MAL A PROPOSITO, PERO NO PUEDE COMPLETAMENTE, PORQUE LA BUENA TECNICA EDUCADA CON AÑOS DE PRACTICA ES DIFICIL DE QUITAR.
Can I play d drums if my wrist has minimal movement in it due to artiritis. Please please please reply
You can still play, but I encourage you to find some therapy and/or stretch that minimizes the inflammation.
@ 2:15 I thought chariots of fire was going be played as background music. 😁
Thanks for the video!
Does it mean that you are 'any good' if you can quad your bass pedal at 120 bpm metro?
ha Bruce, let the drums speak!
One of my current students is David Garabaldi .... enough said
Can you get Gabe from Drumbeatsonline to come on for a lesson?
Yes but what if you don't have any accents? Because in the example the accents actually contribute to the increased fluidity because you can use Moeller.
its like paradidle
Lesson: LIFT!!
Freddie Gruber method
He’s TEACHING Dave Garibaldi??? That’s crazy
I'd say maybe he's tweaking instead of teaching..
No use traditional grip.
Even his bad technique looks good...
One another thing Ive learned is that sigmun freud is drummer!!!! Keep study!!
Sounds cool when slowed down. (To my speed). Lol
5:56 hahahahaaha
As I am getting up there in years now, the phrase ‘letting go of your anatomy’ sounds problematic. That aside, great lesson!
I can't do it either way
He's teaching Garibaldi?
Im here for taiko no tatsujin
