  • RV LIFE and there is going to be mistakes. This Jeep Wrangler flat tow mistake cost us 4 new tires. If you flat tow your Jeep watch the video and do the research.
    Our Jeep Wrangler flat tow mistake, we have been flat towing a vehicle behind our RV since we started our RV LIFE almost 2 years ago. The Jeep Wrangler is a new to us Jeep. We researched how to flat tow a Jeep Wrangler but it didn’t work for us and we destroyed all our tires.
    After called around and watching some RUclips videos we decided to get our tires at Discount Tire. They were great and even though we didn’t have an appointment they got us in replaced the tires and got us back on the road.
    RV LIFE is great and next time we will do more research so we don’t have a Jeep Wrangler flat tow mistake again.

    You literally just saved us from ruining my Jeep today. Everything we read said neutral/park/keys out. Even though all the Jeep club members said neutral/neutral/ keys in, we chose RUclips over their knowledge. Even watched the same videos y’all did. Got the hitch installed today and only made it a mile away when we knew something was horribly wrong. The tires were literally like hot lava cuz we didn’t have the sensors installed yet and the RV was pulling like crazy. After finding your video, we did exactly what you ( and the club members) suggested and no problem what’s so ever after that. RV towed smoothly, the wheels were a good temp and the Jeep stayed in the lines. Thank you for posting this.

    All front wheels have "caster" similar to grocery shopping carts that allow them to turn left and right as needed to harmlessly follow the tow vehicle, but if (and only if) the steering wheel is able to rotate which is why a steering wheel lock must be disengaged with the key if equipped with that anti-theft feature which not all vehicle have.
    Towing with the steering wheel locked will NOT prevent the front wheels from rotating normally, but will quickly wear off the tread all the way around the front tires as shown due to being dragged sideways during curves and corners which doesn't happen when "caster" is allowed to do it's job.

      Thank you for providing the clarity on this. My hope is people can learn from our mistakes.

    • @JoeBlowski
      @JoeBlowski 21 день назад +1

      @@ExploringThroughOurLens You're welcome. I'll add that without "caster" (and with the steering wheel not locked) the front wheels would quickly turn all the way left or right and get dragged in that position, because "caster" is what causes the wheels to stay pointed toward the tow vehicle.

    I just bought a 2000 Wrangler TJ Sahara. The seller said it had brand new tires and it did, but the spare looked like it had skidded down the road, so I asked, he said," I forgot to turn the key onto ignition."

    Transfer case in neutral...steering wheel able to free wheel (not locked)...toad brake in place and tested (Blue Ox, or other brand)... runaway tether in place...umbilical in place(for brake lights and turn signals AND wired properly to pass 12 volts to toad to keep toad battery charged)..check for lights operation (EVERY TIME )... . All this is in the Blue Ox manual. A basic understanding of what you are doing, and what is going on is required. Let's be safe out there, but we're only as safe as the weakest link...don't be that link.

    uhmm if you ever question if your ignition locks just jack up the front wheels (makes it alot easier to turn with no weight) and try to turn the wheel with no keys heck jack up each side and just grab a tire and try to turn if you can turn it then its not locked it it suddenly goes NOPE and stops it means its locked.. its actually quicker then searching up endless idiots who have heavily modified jeeps that dont have factory steering wheels as most offroaders REMOVE the wheel lock gear from the column and forget they even did that... as a mechanic ive facedesked so many times at how much WRONG info you get off alot of people "do not get me wrong there are alot out there that give the correct info" but its sifting though a haystack sometimes.. ex mechanic here that used to tow crs on the side many years ago... had to always double and triple check to see if 1 its front wheel drive rear wheel drive or in some cases all time all wheel drive and if its rear wheel we had to make sure the front tires are locked if not we have to put the car on wheel dollies..1 wrong mistake can cost us many nights of pay if our insurance didnt cover it.

      To this point, a little bit of practical experimentation would have went a long way. E.g., asking the question, "does the wheel on my vehicle lock up if I remove the key..?" this is not a hard experiment and takes about ten seconds to do. But I think the lesson here is when using the Internet to support your research efforts, practical experimentation helps prove or disprove the assumptions. Boo on the tires. Thanks for the video.
