- In today's Chinese food adventure, I'm taking dad to try his first ever Roujiamo, which literally translates to 'meat sandwiched between bread'. It's one of China's most popular street food snacks - and for good reason! It's CRAZY GOOD!

I have noticed that most China vloggers have the greatest parents, bless you Amy and your family.
cuz like most western parents have bad stereotypes about China, only the wide opened parents will educate their children with an opened opinion that the children can abandon the stereotypes to come to China and accept the greatness of china truly

Every Chinese culture vlogger eventually will become Chinese food vlogger.
Because everybody loves Chinese food.
Food is actually the essence of culture, learning about the food is learning about the history and heritage of the people. This is applicable not just to chinese culture.

Awww ❤️ So when Amy was a little girl, dad took her to Chinese restaurants and taught her how to use 🥢. Now she is taking dad to try new food and explore the world. 🥰 This is how family members take care of each other! So sweet!
You are a tribute to your upbringing. Your folks seem to be much involved with your life as an adult. What amazing parents they must be. Cherish the time you have with them.

I was born and raised in Xi’an. And now I am in US and watching an Australian eating Roujiamo on RUclips while eating my McDonald’s Big Mac. How amazing😂
7:10 "....they never eaten garlic before...."
That's crazy to me, garlic is not just an eastern thing, it's an essential ingredient in a lot of French and Italian dishes too, some people really need to expand their palate a bit.
But the Chinese eat raw garlic. Just bite it as an apple. With noodles you get raw garlic.
Some people may have special reasons. I personally know some people (not me) who can not tolerate the taste of onion, ginger and garlic. Very rare but these people do exist and they are perfectly normal otherwise.
In my region we eat raw garlic with 拌面 (a soup-less noddle dish) hahahahah I just love spicy food
Yeah, of course we will respect everyone's preference. But it's difinitely a pity or loss. Garlic, cilantro and most important chili.
walter kooy I think just northern Chinese bite raw garlic. Southern Chinese rarely eat. I never try.
Omg your dad is so adorable together with you!!!
I get so frustrated when I see foreigners here complain about Chinese food! I never understood it... Not liking a few dishes is okay but rejecting the entirety of Chinese cuisine is silly!
I am enjoying your food vlog videos, it stands out from the rest fake ones - where i just hear moaning and OMGs.

In Chinese, if a menu just says "meat 肉", and doesn't specifically state it's "beef", "lamb", "fish" or "chicken" etc., then it usually means pork.
That's what I recently learned, even I'm a native Chinese.
To be precise, Roujiamo is a snack of the Han nationality. The bread of the Muslim version of Roujiamo is relatively ordinary. The bread is delicious with beef, but the bread has no taste. The bread of the Han people's Roujiamo is very different. It has Many layers and crispy, only pork has this unique spice flavor.
its 大肉 in Xian
Oh really ? I think that depends on the region, 肉 for me could be any sort of meat , and I’m from Ürümqi,Xinjiang China . It is true that in traditional Chinese cuisine pork is the main choice of meat . In my family it’s mainly beef though
Because in China pork is the most common meat in most provinces, so 肉 usually means pork.
Every great daughter has a great dad...and mum of course.

Amy's enthusiasm and energy are infectious. She would be an outstanding tour guide! Plus the benefit in speaking fluent Mandarin is being offered off-menu items.
Jeez, even with the tension between China and Australia government and all those racism against Chinese my friends in Australia told me about, there is still new duo language video about Chinese food made by cute Aussie lady who actually travelled to China before...
I start to believe peace still might come in the end...
Don’t say anything related to political stuff. It’s just a food culture vlog. Have you noticed that no political comments were liked by Amy?
There are a couple of different roujiamo肉夹馍 in Xi'an, cured beef roujiamo腊牛肉夹馍, and preserved pork roujiamo腊汁肉夹馍. The beef roujiamo is made by Muslims, and pork roujiamo is made by Han. And there are two common types of bread also, the crispy Tongguan Roujiamo老潼关肉夹馍, and the slightly softer half-raised bread called Baijimo白吉馍.
the bread is actually called Naan and is from India.
Your videos are awesome and your relationship with your dad is awesome. Looking forward to your family trying new stuff!

老外 is a derogatory term for Caucasians. I'm actually disappointed the lady use that term. Seems like more can be done to educate the Chinese on racial equality.
@@edededmw7016 老外 is just a more casual and neutral way to say 外国人 "foreigner". We like to add 老 to any noun and it is nothing bad, like 老哥dude 老姐sis 老弟bro 老爹oldman(father) 老表homie. 老+surname like 老李 老张 老白 is just casual calling without any negative emotion, actually most old couples like to use 老+surname to call their spose. And the term 老外 doesn't make anything horrible historically

Fun Fact: Muslim ROUJIAMO is made by beef but the one you ate was actually pork.
yes. two totally different ROUJIAMO. PORK vs BEEF.
the traditional 肉夹馍 is made by pork, and its the best tasted
@@kennethlew4341 There isn't only one traditional 肉夹馍 ... as there are many Muslim people in Xi An, for more than a thousand year, and they don't eat pork. That's why beef or lamb 肉夹馍 may be as traditional as pork 肉夹馍, even if you find it less tasty 😉
@@happylobsterpatatas As a Xi'anese, I never ate lamb ROUJIAMO. XD.
@@darrensun4432 Indeed beef, and especially pork, 肉夹馍 are the most common... I don't know about lamb version, I just saw someone mentioning it higher in the comments (maybe it's his own personal recipe 😆). Traditionally speaking, it's a very simple recipe, meat and bread, the name 肉夹馍 doesn't specify any kind of particular meat. I believe you can do it with whatever meat you have or whatever you can eat if you cannot eat pork... my parents are chinese, when cooking they would swap a kind of meat with another one from time to time depending on what they have in the fridge. The muslim (Hui) community which is quite big in Xi'an have eating this dish for so long, they have been eating beef or other kind meats instead of pork because of their religion, that's why I believe pork is not the only possible meat for a "traditional 肉夹馍", even if it may be the most common and the tastiest to fit with the dish.
Amy you got the characteristic of Chinese people: modest 😂

Your whole family are joyful and positive
Hi Amy, just ran into your videos today and I have watched 4 of them by now. Love your works, and this clip you made with your dad to eat 肉夹馍 particularly touched my heart. My dad passed away quickly last June with a cancer diagnosis for 45 days. I managed to get a visa and ticket back to Beijing from Singapore and went through quarantine in Shanghai for 14 days (loved your recent work about quarantine in Guangzhou, by the way). I got 10 days with my dad which I am so grateful to, cooked his favorite food which he taught me through all these years. We used to have a two-week family trip each year to different provinces in China as well as to other countries. Trying different food is the major fun of ours. Food is never simply food. It's a story of our lives. Wish you a great time in Guangdong through the last few days home quarantine in your friend's mansion. Wish your family members all the best as well.
What bothers me constantly: how to like a video multiple times?
don't say "a yi" to a girl who'salmost the same age as yours xD. Just say "xie xie ni" is fine. "a yi" means someone much older than you basically your mom's age.
But that lady does look like an aunty? Amy is what, 26?
Jimmy Y nah that girl looks the same age
@@Surstromming22 Even if they look middle aged you should never call them a yi until they have grey hairs. It's like a politeness thing, even if they look old enough to be your aunt you should flatter them by calling them sis instead of aunty.
