Oh yes definitely my walls would be covered in reminders signs if I had the space. It’s easy to overheat links when annealing but you can’t over do it by annealing too many times. I tend to err on the side of caution and put them through the process as often as possible … N
Cheers Tenebrae, that’s good to hear. hard to know sometimes if my videos are understandable without a bit of feedback from people like you … thanks … Nick
Hi Nick, hope all is well... Wanted to pick your brain if possible. I've made 0.7 mm 925 wire with 3mm diameter. I've been using hard little chips of hard solder on the initial jump rings, then medium paste when attaching multiple sets of rings. I've found when I've attempted to pull a chain through a rolling mill, some links always break. Im thinking about buying some 8mm or less hard solder wire and using instead, as I've heard always use hard solder. Still very new to the craft and would appreciate any advice on how not to break links and which is the best solder on small ump rings/links. Also purchased the Parkside torch on your recommendation, which works great and learnt a lot skills from your videos favourite being byzantine chain 👍🏾
The all-time dilemma … why do links break? I use a lot of solder paste when chain making because it’s so quick, easy and convenient to use. A lot of people say they don’t use it because it’s forms a brittle joint, however I’ve had great success stretching links to there absolute limit after using paste. that’s not to say I haven’t had a lot of links break. but generally small joints with paste are stronger than the wire itself and if I push it too far, the wire tends to break first. For me the key to success is endless annealing. I think what can happen is when manipulating silver the solder in a joint will work harder quicker than the actual silver itself so the joint goes brittle first. Annealing a fine delicate chain is nerve racking as easy solder melts only just above the annealing temperature of sterling silver so it has to be achieved with care. One other thing, I try not to clean up a soldered joint until I have finished stretching and manipulating. If you’re really struggling, it might be worth testing all your possible solders on some copper wire to see how much work hardening and bending they will take before breaking. Some solder may work better than others. Contamination can be an issue, I once had a whole batch of links start breaking. i stopped the proceedings reheated all the links pickled and cleaned and the problem was resolved … hope this helps in someway … and the biggest recommendation from me would be … anneal anneal and anneal some more … N
@@Nickscreativestuff Invaluable nick, appreciated. Thank you for taking time out to offer your advice. Will definitely be putting into practice, look forward to your next upload ❤️💪🏾

It took me a moment to realize these would not be located in the jewelers department. 🤦 Found them straight away in the automotive section tho. 😂 Brilliant idea! I love how you think outside the box. Thank you.
