Sounds like Bret's wrestling expertise was on such a level that even many of the most knowledgeable wrestling minds around him (Jim included) didn't even recognize it for what it really was. Bret was the embodiment of everything Jim often says is missing from the major promotions today.
What I’ve noticed Bret gets buried a lot in interviews but I’ve also, at the same time, a lot of wrestlers will say the best match they had was with Bret.
Everyone talks about in ring abilities of guys like Flair but Bret could have a great match with anyone and always seemed to tell a great story in the ring too! Nobody was better in the square circle than Bret
I honestly like the Bret Hart wrestler I guess we can call it his in-ring person. It isn't trying to be something else, it just feels like it's him being a wrestler and a tough guy. It isn't over the top and it isn't in your face like Ultimate Warrior. Those guys outside of the fanbase (maybe in but these are just from observing people who aren't into wrestling like we all are) either get made fun of or just questioned because seriously, seeing Ultimate Warrior run out the ring like that and shake the ring then talk just made you wonder about that guy and take him less seriously. Bret was just that calm and collective guy who I felt showed and never told. So when you see the whole "best there is, best there was, and the best there ever will be" line, you believe it. Plus he had a badass theme song. I remember watching wrestling for the first time and seeing Bret do this one back breaker (think it is in his titration video in his return in 2010) just looked super deadly. I also love his submission finisher and the name sharpshooter... Not sure if he made that name up or not but it also does kind of fit with his Hitman nickname.
I feel Bret was a master storyteller in the ring, where every move felt like it mattered. As opposed to now a days, you're lucky if they sell a move longer than 1 minute.
@Kwame brown and Jim cornette burner account I started wrestlinling in the mid 60s with Fritz Von Erich vs. Johnny Valentine in fort Worth. Got away from it during high school and college and got back into it when living in Daytona 1980-1981 with Georgia Championship Wrestling on TBS. And then back in Texas with the Von Erich boys 1980-1985 until they pretty much all DIED. Two best wrestlers ever as far as talent, work and promos BY FAR were Flair and Piper.
Growing up I remember that line and always thought Bret seemed silly saying it. Then I believe it was with Shawn, he cut a promo with actual emotion and used that line towards then end, and I was taken back. It was the first time I ever thought “oh, he actually believes that shit.” It’s a little sad he was starting to be at his best promo wise when he left.

Bret's execution of offensive grappling moves was far superior. Shawn could take bumps beautifully and there was a grace to his movement that's unmatched to this day. His high flying also looked awesome without the excess of today's gymnasts.
@Hidden Sword Shawn can’t sell, well he could but sometimes he did goofy stuff that took me out of the match. I hated when he would flop around. Bret always made it look legit. Bret > Shawn

Bret will always be the most underappreciated wrestler of all time. In the post-1983 world we've lived in, he's a top 5 all-time talent. He was better than Shawn, he was better than anyone else in his day. In my lifetime, no one except maybe Kurt has made it as real.

@@stephonwilliams5232 WWE is unique in the sense that its business, at least back when it was WWF in the 80's, was so integrated with the Canadian market. They were essentially one and the same. WWF would not have become what it is today without its Canadian connection from back then. All this to say that it's really hard to consider Bret Hart a "foreigner" when Canada was such a huge part of Wrestling back then.
It fascinates me, the parallels in Brets life and that of Mick Foley in their youth. Both were trying to be film-makers. Both worked as life-guards. I'd love to hear them have a conversation about that.
Bret mentions in his book how he clicked with Mick because they both "had the ability to see the match play out in their mind beforehand". I think that director/film maker mentality really helped with their careers

I also doubt any US wrestling fans consider how uninterested European fans are with some Roider telling you how great America was, and to drink your milk and eat your vitamins..... then a male stripper....
Seriousness is seriously lacking these days. Especially the way, on WWE tv these days, they insist on making sure we all know it’s a work. They always talk about “their character” this and “their character” that. I think Cornette has talked about that before. Plus even the work of these “stars” has been so sloppy. They don’t even try that much. When a guy like Bad Bunny has the most realistic spot in ages that says a lot about the product IMO.
Bret Hart IS the greatest wrestler that's ever walked the earth. Bar none. NOBODY was more believable than Bret Hart. Nobody before him and nobody after him. His matches hold up, his title reigns speak for themselves, and his career as a whole proves it.
Bret was the first wrestler in my era (1980's - Present) that I remember won all three of WWF's titles. Tag-Team Champion, Intercontinental Champion, and WWF World Champion. He was the man! Edit: I didn't watch Pedro Morales, so nothing against him. He was the first to do it, so it should be noted.
Does anyone else want Jim and Brian to put up some of these matches on RUclips that've been lost to time that only they have tapes of ? I'd love to watch these old shows ✌️
Bret is the G.O.A.T. You can say Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair, Stone Cold, Kurt Angle, Buddy Rogers, Bruno Sammartino, the Rock, but Bret Hart was incredible. He had the cool look, the technical ability, he was an athlete, he was amazing at in ring psychology and has had many classic matches. My all time favourite and hero growing up. He made everything look real and accomplished everything. Bret was also innovative, taking the first bump through a table on WWE PPV against Diesel. He brought the ladder match concept to the WWE, he invented the figure four around the ring post, he carried Davey Boy Smith to a five star match at summeslam 1992, he elevated Austin to the top, he took part in the best match in WM history against Austin at WM13, he has the best opening match in WM history at WM10 against his brother Owen Hart, he was in the first WWE iron man match on PPV held at WM12. Bret could make any wrestler look better while winning or losing. Bret never injured anyone in his entire career, which is incredible because he adopted the hard hitting Calgary style which can be snug. I can’t say enough good things about Bret and how much he gave to wrestling. The best thing is that he didn’t even need a gimmick! Bret Hart was Bret Hart. The best ever to Grace the squared circle. Bret Hart is an artist and the ring his canvas. the excellence of execution is the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be.
He's had 4 or 5 of the best matches ever, in my opinion. Yes, his singles career was what elevated him to the very top of the WWF, I think that his tag team stuff with Neidhart, as the Hart Foundation, is great. Some of the best tag team wrestling you will ever see. I loved the stuff they did as a heel team with Jimmy Hart as their manager.
My all time favourite wrestler. I was lucky to see him live vs Bam Bam in 93 and Hakushi in 95. Both matches were genuinely ppv quality and it was clear that Bret was there to work and not phone it in like others on the card. Really looking forward to checking this special out.
Bottom line, Bret was THE most "believable" wrestler I have ever seen. You can put a Bret match on for the most skeptical, smart ass pro wrestling critic, and even they will have to respect the match. I had an uncle who was the "wrestling is so phoney" guy, and it drove me nuts. One day I was watching wrestling and he sat down and started in on me. He laughed that I was watching. I put the Bret vs. Mr Perfect "King Of The Ring" match on and he actually popped. He asked "do you have any other matches of this Bret Hart guy"? I was beaming with shock and pride. So I played Bulldog (Summerslam 92) and Owen (WM10) where he lost both, and he was loving it. That's when you KNOW a guy is captivating.
Hitman Hart: Wrestling With Shadows is still the best Bret Hart biography, but A&E's take added some important history and gave us an epilogue where Bret finally seems at peace, which was nice.
I had the pleasure of seeing Bret, Davey Boy and Dynamite Kid live and in person when they were younger and they really learned their craft well !! And the Victoria Pavilion in Calgary and it’s clone The Sales Pavilion in Edmonton both held around 2000 people and was so much fun to watch the matches in !! 👍🏻
Bret is one of my favorites. Every match was sheer perfection, and even the matches with Jerry The King Lawler was hilarious!!! He was entertaining all around. More of these modern wrestlers should study him.
Most modern wrestlers idolize Shawn Michaels. Nothing wrong with that but if at least half of the guys today pattern themselves after Bret Hart, I feel like there would be more of a balance in the business.
Bret Hart is the best wrestler I've ever seen. I consider Kurt Angle to be the best overall performer I've ever laid eyes on, but in terms of making a match look believable, look real, selling the impact of a move done against him and making his opponent look good, he's the GOAT. One of the funnier compliments I've read about him years ago was that he convinced WCW that Kevin Nash could work. And while I think that's a tad harsh to Big Kev, you'd have a hard time naming a great match he was in that didn't involve either Bret or Shawn...that's how good they both were. I just prefer Bret's more believe style.
Yea I think what sets Bret apart from Shawn is he took the matches seriously. You would never ever see Bret pull that flimsy Ric Flair turnbuckle bullshit or the stunt he pulled with Hogan at Summerslam
It's refreshing to finally have Jim admit he's often been wrong about Bret's attitude. He used to say Bret took himself too seriously in one vid here, then five minutes later he'd be talking about how the clowns in AEW do not. If more wrestlers were like Bret, wrestling wouldn't be the cirucs it is now.
As a guy who grew up folk wrestling etc..Bret was the guy that when I watched his matches I could tell these guys actually know how to grapple finish predetermined or not.
My favorite line from Bret was when he talked about Austin. He said something to the effect of “He was the nastiest, most rotten foul-mouthed guy, and the people loved him. It would be like people loving the shark from Jaws.” 😆
Bret had some fantastic matches a lot mention Stone Cold Submission, but I loved watching wrestle Mr Perfect. Against Perfect you had 2 of the best technical wrestlers I was a huge fan of Perfect as a heel because he was such a great Wrestler, promo etc
And that was with the knowledge that Mr. Perfect needed back surgery! Armed with that information in hindsight, could you tell Kurt Henning had a fucked up back because i couldn’t…
On a related topic- my fantasy match would have been Hart in his prime vs. Angle in his prime. Can you imagine the athleticism and storytelling they could have achieved?
Bret was my hero! He moved me in this documentary. He is raw, real and honest! I respect that he never changes his story. This was the best out of the series. He truly was one of the best there ever will be. What a wrestler.
Absolute legend in his day and forever, people say he’s bitter etc but really he speaks the truth even though sometimes it comes off like he’s bitter or pissed. He made wrestling believable
Bret Harts ex wife Julie was from my province and was an old friend of my moms. Everytime the WWF came to our province we would always get to meet him. My uncle also owned the local hockey team that played in the arena where the WWF shows would take place so we always got to meet some of the guys after the shows. I will never forget Hulk Hogan vs Savage, and years later seeing Bret win the belt from Flair at a superstars house show in Saskatoon. My mom probably has the picture of me with his glasses and the belt over my shoulder. Flair never left character when we met him either. I swear my mom was going to leave with him and my dad would have probably been proud of it lol
Bret Hart matches were the closest thing to Picasso paintings. They were logical, they had a sense of realism to them. Bret portrayed himself as a true world champion because he believed and made you believe. No secret that the business drew better when people believed versus the high schoolers drawing average ratings on Wednesday nights. Everyone from kids to grandmas loved Bret and his matches because he loved his fans. He never felt fake but like a guy grateful for his success. People can call him bitter all they want but if you lost your career despite being loyal to to the company you worked for, your parents, two brothers, countless friends, suffered a debilitating stroke and cancer within a 20 year period, you would be mad at the world too. The only people who say he was bitter are fat slobs living in their parents basement and post on Reddit. Seeing the last few minutes of the doc with Bret with his family was euphoric. To see your childhood hero get a happy ending in a industry where his peers dropped dead before they could collect social security is a beautiful thing.
Bret Hart had the unique ability of making all of his moves look like they hurt, without actually hurting anyone. He didn't call himself "The Excellence of Execution" for nothing. To my knowledge Bret Hart never injured anyone in the ring and all of his stuff was crisp and clean. Did he have an Ego? Yeah, but not any bigger than any other Main Eventer at the time. Bret also had great pride in his work. Modern day wrestlers seem to only care about doing moves to pop the crowd without worrying about the danger or the execution of a particular move, which in turn makes their stuff seem either sloppy or way too choreographed. And when everyone is wrestling at similar paces, doing the exact same moves, repeating the same spots over and over again, well, everything just seems to blend together and lack variety. Whilst you can watch a Bret Hart match and appreciate all the little details. Especially when facing other greats like Mr. Perfect, Davey Boy Smith, Owen Hart, Jinsei Shinzaki "Hakushi" or Steve Austin.
Bret Hart is still massive here in the UK. Growing up in the early-90s Bret was *THE GUY* everyone loved. Biggest loss to wrestling was WCW's bungling of this legitimate wrestling GOAT, what a shitshow that was. Ending was very sweet though, didn't have Bret down for a lover of brown sugar.
You mentioned Dynamite Kid and just how good his shit looked, and I gotta reiterate how right you are. I must have seen the spots he did with Tiger Mask recreated a million times by now, and it always looks phony and cooperative with sloppy indy guys whipping their arms around, not even getting a grasp on their opponents, and the opponent rolling with them as if they had. But with Tiger Mask and Tommy, it really looked like two guys fighting for control and countering each other at break neck speed, I've honestly never seen anyone make that exchange look good before and now have a better understanding of why so many people do it.
2 words why nobody watches wrestling anymore “Canadian Destroyer” When I first saw this trash move I didn’t understand who was supposed to be hurt from it. It’s pure and utter pain to watch. Whoever thinks this flippy flip garbage is wrestling is only fooling yourself. We need more people like Bret. Thank you Bret! I remember watching Bret vs. Owen as a kid and when Owen won, my younger brother started to cry... I may have teared up too. But it felt real to us...ESPECIALLY for that time in wwf wrestling. Same thing with Bret vs Davey. Love the Hart family. I hope I get to meet Bret one day just to say thank you.

I just watched it and it is a masterpiece! It should seriously win an Emmy. The entire series was great, but the Hart one is in a league of its own. Well done A&E. 👏
I'm late to the party I just watched these A&E docs, the Ric Flair doc. These were fairly great, and it had a very candid insight on how the wrestlers thinks about their work. I respect Bret so much, he treats his stuff seriously because that's what he grew up with, he wasn't just a fan, not to mention he grew up with a family that treat it the same. I could say the same for Rock, whenever he shows up in this docs he always have great insights.
People who say Bret took things too seriously were mostly from the clique. Razor/ Scott Hall was the first person I heard say that shit. An not only was he never world champion in the ring he wasn't shit outside of it. His bio will be mostly him being drunk & rehab not taking life seriously
Interesting that no one shits on the Undertaker for taking things too seriously. Personally, I believe that if they had Bret and The Undertaker as co-head trainers at the performance centre (along with firing the writers), it would probably help the product immensely.
Scott Hall was nothing more than a drunk and jealous that he could never get as over as Bret. Hall will always be remembered as the drunk that he is, he excelled at that compared to wrestling.
I never would have thought that Bret's story would wind up so positive after all of the heartbreak and hardships that he's suffered due to the business. I'm happy that he and Julie seem to have an amicable relationship as well.
This episode had everything: made me laugh, made me cry, and also happy in the end. Best episode from the biography series. I rewatched the Bret vs Mr. Perfect match from 1991 Summerslam after seeing the clips from this episode...and holy hell, I didn't think much of it back then, but compared to what you see today in wrestling, that match was a freaking masterpiece, absolute perfection in my opinion.
The early to mid 90s WWF gets a bad rap but I have many great memories of the "New Generation". Even if it wasn't mature enough for some people, it still had great wrestlers telling stories that made sense. One of the earliest Raws featured Heenan trying to sneak into the Manhattan Center and that one theme carried throughout the entire episode. It made things interesting. Before there was Raw I used to love watching Prime Time. I looked forward to syndicated shows like Challenge and Superstars. I had a nostalgia moment but you get the point.
Bret Hart always delivered - great PPV's matches,... great feuds (Steve Austin and USA vs Canada in 1997),... great DVD in 2005,... great HOF speech in 2006,... great autobiography in 2007.
You can tell from this documentary how important Stu Hart was as well. Stu's love for wrestling and the fact that he was a family man really helped Bret develop into the man he became as a wrestler, because Stu strove for excellence and instilled that within his family as well.

As a huge fan of HBK, I must say that my respect for Bret was remembered and magnified. The issue I had with Bret was his bitterness, non-forgiveness , and his ability to make it seem as though he was always right, and other people were wrong. Now, I feel as though his seriousness and love for the profession is what set him apart. I still prefer HBK in the ring, but Bret was a better champion and leader, and now that he has forgiven and admitted he wasn’t the perfect man he presented himself to be, I want to go back and watch Bret Hart stuff.

Timeless. I still watch his matches a lot more than what’s being shown now.
Same here 👍
I honestly like the Bret Hart wrestler I guess we can call it his in-ring person.
Same.
I feel Bret was a master storyteller in the ring, where every move felt like it mattered. As opposed to now a days, you're lucky if they sell a move longer than 1 minute.
@Kwame brown and Jim cornette burner account As opposed to Shawn who was a master at bating...
The best there is, The best there was, and The best there ever will be...,
Growing up I remember that line and always thought Bret seemed silly saying it.
Then I believe it was with Shawn, he cut a promo with actual emotion and used that line towards then end, and I was taken back. It was the first time I ever thought “oh, he actually believes that shit.”
It’s a little sad he was starting to be at his best promo wise when he left.

Would be cool if the two guys who took it the most seriously were co-head trainers at the Performance Centre. Bret Hart and the Undertaker.

Bret Hart is an artist and the ring his canvas. the excellence of execution is the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be.
his matches all were the same match
So many WWE stars had their best matches with Bret...Piper, Perfect, Davey Boy, Dynamite (rare singles match), Stone Cold, Owen Hart, HBK maybe...
Well said
Bret Hart will always be one of the best. Top shelf.
Bret's whole program with heel Owen are some of my favorite memories of 90s WWF. That cage match was fantastic.
If You Were A Bret Hart Fan As A Kid, You Are Still A Bret Hart Fan As An Adult.

Pretty much. He seemed like a jerk in some of his interviews later on though.

Bret is one of my favorites. This bio was really well done and maybe the best one of A&Es so far
Very well said my man couldn’t have said it any better than that
Bret Hart had the unique ability of making all of his moves look like they hurt, without actually hurting anyone.

You mentioned Dynamite Kid and just how good his shit looked, and I gotta reiterate how right you are.

Cause kids now of days believe what. They are told to like not what they have seen. Shawn Michaels on his best isn't as good as Bret on Bret worst day and that was very rare if any that wasn't the best Shawn has had some bad matches summerslam 96/ King of the Ring 97 were dog shit.
@@williamgraham8680 You don’t have to downplay Shawn to pump up Bret. Most wrestlers will tell you Shawn is the best in ring performer ever. It all left up to taste, but Shawn could wrestle a broom and steal the show.
@@Director2024 i do have to down play Shawn compared to Bret because it's simple Shawns had bad matches when he was the top guy in the company. When has Bret had a bad match when he was the top guy. The answer is no I don't recall. shawn is great a wrestler. He is top ten for share. I feel Bret is better that's it.
@@williamgraham8680 You Mean when Bret was wresting the likes of Doink the Clown, Repo Man, and all the other C rates?
@@williamgraham8680 King of Ring 97 Shawn had a banger match with Austin
Canadians are dry ??? What are you taking aboot ...like Terrance and Phillip said "you sir are a racist and I am writing a letter to our Prime Minister Celine Dion" 😉
Like the ginger ale?
Canadians are like Brits, very acerbic and sarcastic. Often catches Americans off guard I find.
Well, us Canucks drink good beer...we're good haha.
Lmao only South Park fans are going to get the Terrence and Philip refrence hehe
Thanks Jim and Brian I was eagerly waiting for this review.
For me Bret Hart was the king of the ring and world champion. His matches and fueds were awesome and he made me wrestling fan. Today wrestling is aweful video game and movie like which make you realize how amazing Bret Hart was in making wrestling a legit contest with story telling and wonderful finishes.
He truly was the best there is the best there was and the best there ever will be.
The best there is, was and ever will be.
Bret Hart agrees with this comment. And says it to himself several times a day, even now.
Bret Hatt, Kurt Angle, and Eddie Guerrero are three of the best of all time.
Travis nails it again. :D I was waiting for "wtf is this thumbnail about" and sure enough I got the explanation :'D
This makes me very happy. Bret is My favorite of all time. He was more then just a Chsracter, he was my hero.
He was not the strongest, or the biggest, but he was the best wrestlers, the smartest, and always had something prepared. As a kid I learned that if I knew my craft, and employed myself to the hardest, i could overcome anything, just like the Hitman.
A bio without any random podcast, unknown actors and comedians is always a plus.
Hell of a career, especially with losing a few family members in wrestling.
Brets ring post figure 4 ..perfect. why is no one using this now? He will always be the goat
Bret Hart is the greatest professional wrestler that ever lived
Can we get some more watch alongs? Have they not been doing them or I have just missed them??
Bret sent me a personal happy birthday thanking me for being a fan and a family man. No birthday present can top that. I watched Hart v Perfect 100 times at SS91 with my brother and that was the most excellently perfect match ever and for him to thank my brother and I is timeless. Thanks for the memories Bret and Curt!
