No jim the finish to the 96 survivor series match was a callback to the wrestlemania 8 match bret had with roddy piper I'm surprised Brian didn't catch onto that considering he's a bret hart fan and has mentioned and watched with Jim that match
Austin was brilliant in the Hollywood Blondes as well. Him and Pillman took being put together as a tag team, when they weren't exactly happy about it, and made it work. In fact they did a lot more than just make it work. As for Bret Hart, when my friends were all fans of Hogan in the late 1980's, I was a fan of Bret.
Bret was by far my favorite wrestler in the 90's, but when I was a little kid in the 80's I remember one day I was wearing a Hogan shirt and one of my dad's friends asked if Hogan was my favorite wrestler? To which I replied, " no, I just don't have a Leo Burke shirt!" In the 80's in Nova Scotia, Leo Burke was the man!!
This is my favourite feud of all time. Both guys brought so much to the table and they killed it on camera every time. It's almost poetic that the previous flag-bearer and greatest in-ring worker of all time broke the biggest star WWE ever had. Huge kudos have to go to both guys for creating such an enthralling rivalry.
Bret also did that same roll up at Wrestlemania VIII against Piper as he had the sleeper on Bret and he used the turnbuckle kick off of and roll him up
I am shocked I had to scroll THIS FAR down to find this comment... I was watching that ppv live and as soon as Hart started walking up the ropes in the Million $ Dream, I yelled out "MANIA 8!!!!!!", lol... I just remember that ppv so clearly bc it was one of my favorite WRESTLEMANIAs
@@iVtheDemonKnight it’s just crazy that so many don’t remember that match, as it was on of his greatest matches during his 2 runs with the intercontinental championship. Also include the fact that Piper put him over clean and he rarely ever did that for anyone.
"When I actually do it and take this lousy stinking hyena, Stone Cold Steve Austin and beat him to a bloody pull. You somehow find it in your hearths to abandon me and cheer for him" - Bret Hart
I have been looking forward to listening to Jim review the most recent Rivals episodes with Bret, Shawn, and Austin because he was there working behind the scenes for both of them. he experienced both of these rivalries first hand.
My favorite feud ever , the best ever these guys knew what they were doing I still watch the old matches from this feud on Peacock 5 stars ... wrestling needs to do this again NOW!!!
The term "character" is used in wrestling or sports entertainment. Bret Hart and Stone Cold Steve Austin aren't characters. They aren't pretending to be something. They're genuine. They're both badasses and that's what resonated in the documentary. I imagine if a fan had jumped in the ring at that time during one of their matches, that person would be screaming for help because Stone Cold or Bret would be beating the hell out of them for fun.
Me too. Bret is my favorite and Austin is right behind him. For people that say Steve Austin can’t wrestle, the fact that Bret Hart had come out and openly said he enjoyed every time he worked with him and has nothing but tremendous respect for Steve should tell you something. Bret takes the business seriously, and he doesn’t respect a whole lot of wrestlers outside his own family and inner circle. Outside of Steve, Undertaker, and Mr. Perfect, I could think of anyone else
In my opinion, this is the best feud. It had everything. I'll never forget Stone Cold's black and white Surviver Series Promo to Bret. It's my favourite promo of all time. Bret's wrestling improved just when you couldn't think it could be improved. Love every bit of it
I love this rivalry just for Austin's promos and interview segments 😅. The in studio interview in October '96 was incredible and the post rumble '97 raw clips I always go back to.
So much a&e didn’t show. The ambulance part, the prt when Austin was in a wheelchair and challenged Bret to a wheelchair match. So much great stuff. Bret and Austin had one of the best rivalries of all time
I love this rival. I also liked Brett Hart and Jerry Lawler rival. And yes, Brian. Tele Savalis is cool not stunning. Austin was at the right place and the right time. Remember when The Kliq broke kayfabe? That messed Hunter and Shawn up, and opened opportunities for others
I thought the rivalry between Bret and Steve was more realistic than Bret and Shawn, which is funny because Bret and Austin respected each other and Bret and Shawn had some real heat!
I barely watched WWE back then but I must admit, those promos Austin did leading up to their matches got my attention because they were flat out the best I've seen in awhile.
Austin promos and interviews during the build up of their WM13 match are pure GOLD. Hilarious stuff but felt 100% real at the same time, Stone Cold talking trash and acting over aggressive during late 96- half 97 was over the top material, even better than later larger than life promos against Vince.
22:50 The finish to the Survivor Series match was a callback to the finish of Bret's match with Piper at Wrestlemania. Piper/Austin had Bret in the sleeper, and Bret kicks off the turnbuckles to fall back on Piper/Austin to pin them since they were wrapped up in their own hold. It has been paid homage by other wrestlers since then.
Bret recycled finishers a lot. He beat Bigelow with a victory roll at KOTR, then had it backfire when he tried it on Owen at WM10. He and Shawn had a Title match where HBK hit several top rope hurracanranas before Bret avoided it and caught him in the Sharpshooter. They used that same spot to end regulation in the Ironman Match at WM12.
@@nickash-crisler5773 agreed. i thought the wrestlemania 12 spot was genius, bc bret kept saying in the run up to the match that you jus thave to wait for shawn to make a mistake. Shawn made the mistake out of desperation and bret caught him. Except this time, time ran out.
I knew people who didn't like wrestling and didn't watch wrestling but they had a poster of Stone Cold's bloody, screaming face on their wall. Truly an iconic image!
10:28 IMO Austin would've gotten made regardless because Bret handpicked him for his comeback program which is what put him over, and Austin wasn't doing anything significant post KOTR anyway. However without KOTR there's probably no Austin 3:16 and Austin loses a massive marketing element.
It's crazy to speculate on because it comes down to one singular moment, however I think you're probably correct. I don't see Triple H magically becoming That Guy instead
The only part I disagree with Jim on. The fans were NOT behind Steve by the end of the match. I was there. When Hart won the building erupted. It was when Bret a) kicked Austin when he was down, and b) when he backed down from Shamrock especially, the fans booed the shit out of him. But until the VERY end the fans were 80% with Hart.
The match between Brett and stone cold at WrestleMania was probably my favorite match of all time. But a lot of people forget about that match at Survivor Series in 96. That match was just as good in my opinion
People love to trash Bret but Bret was the bridge between Austin and Hogan. Austin himself praises Bret's work and believes his feud with Bret helped make him.
Lol, I just watched this, and the Shawn Michaels episode earlier. Always found it interesting to see Austin's look and character change so much between WCW and WWF.
They didn't wrestle often or for long so it wasn't as great a rivalry as it could have been. But the short program between Bret's return and WM13 was legendary. Stone Cold vs Bret at WM14 would have been a fantastic payoff after having lost to Bret twice and getting hurt by Owen.
I wished Brett would’ve stayed in WWF instead of going to WCW so him and Austin could’ve had a longer feud can you imagine these two at wrestlemania going for the heavyweight title either if it’s Brett or Austin, it would’ve been a great heavyweight title match at that time 🔥🔥🔥🔥
The butterfly effect from that would've been astounding. Bret staying would've resulted in feuds with Jericho, Angle, Guerrero and Benoit in his prime and prevented him from getting the concussion from Goldberg. It also would've prevented Owen's death and maybe they would've had a run with the Tag Team titles against the Hardyz, Dudleyz and Edge & Christian.
@@Partyboy22 Bret staying also doesn't (probably) create the Austin-McMahon feud so unless Turner was still adamant about selling WCW, it's possible WCW stays on top or doesn't fall that far behing and they stay in business. A lot of shit would've played out differently with Bret staying home.
One of my favourite promo's from Austin during this rivalry was "If you put the letter S in front of Hitman, you'd have my exact opinion of Bret Hart".
Thing about WM13 is, the double turn wasnt complete until Bret attacked Steve after the match and powdered to Shamrock. When the bell rang to end the match, the crowd popped for Bret initially.
This was the perfect transition from the Federation to the Attitude era, the biggest eras in wrestling history, and my favourite rivalry of all time, with 2 of my favourite wrestlers
This was the greatest rivalry if all time to me because my best friend was a die hard Brett Hart fan and I was all about Steve Austin because I became a fan since his Stunning Steve Austin days.
A detail I noticed watching this: Bret & Steve never wrestled each other for an IC or world championship. All their matches were personal grudge style encounters, even when Bret had the new Hart Foundation in the late 90s. I love when things get personal & there's no championship on the line...just dignity, respect & raw toughness.
Their street fight at RAW is the most memorable to me The agony Austin put Bret in using Bret's own move (even stone cold used to put reasonable sharpshooter) For months he actually used wheelchair and walking sticks - only after full fall down of Kayfabe and autobiographies we know it was all work for Bret to actually get his knee operated Best rivalry ever for me
honestly, this was the best. better than Bret and Shawn or The Rock snd Stone Cold, this was the ONE in the 90's. These two guys actually resepected each other a lot, but it felt so epic and real when they faught. Kudos to both for putting on great performances.
This was an amazing Episode of WWE Rival stone Cold Steve Austin Vs Bret Hart is my favorite Feud especially when Austin Challenged Bret on WWF Superstars to a match at Survivor series 1996 that was great their Match at Wrestlemania 13 and Revenge at the Taker in April 1997 was awesome this was a great episode.
Ringmaster was dead before Wrestlemania 12, I don’t think Ringmaster gimmick made it to second set and of Raw tapings in 1996, already was Stone Cold Steve Austin vs Savio Vega. I remember on commentary Vince saying his fellow Superstars dubbed him Ringmaster but Vince sees a Stone Cold individual, sure Vince pass the buck on lame Ringmaster name and take credit for Stone Cold. Curtain Call was WCW’s demise. Austin 3:16 said on PPV before NWO formed in 1996 on PPV. WCW already lost Monday Night war just didn’t know it yet. There were no Austin 3:16 signs the next night at Raw tapings in Green Bay…took a while for that to start, not next night, despite WWE’s narrative. How would Wrestlemania 13 double turn worked without the crimson mask? Vince sure profited off of it with the Blood Stone shirts.
HAHAHAHA ! My baby-mama just "Jared Leto n Fight Club!!! Remember?" When we watched it and he shaved his head , she said I quote..."Oh...he's just STUNNING!"HAHAHAHA!😂😎
Jim, the Survivor Series Austin/Bret match, it may have ended like Stasiak & Morales, but the very second I saw how it ended, as I watched it live, I knew immediately it was the same as the end of the WRESTLEMANIA VIII Match between Hart vs Piper. Same finish.
After watching this and the Shawn one, all i could think was, if only WM14 main event was him finally getting his win over Bret for the title. That Shawn rivalry was nothing.
I've been recently rewatching 96-97 Raw so I didn't need to watch this but everything JC said about this rivalry is dead on. The thing is, if you brought this type of booking and presentation back, it would still work infinitely better than the BS presented today, especially the extra shitty stuff that is Dynamite. Sure, you don't have Austin or Bret, but the fans would eat this shit up still.
Bret interacted a lot during 96& 97..Survivor Series,It's Time (PPV),Royal Rumble,Final Four (PPV),WM13,Revenge of the Taker(PPV)..they kept the rivalry hot ..while getting Bret bak in the Title picture/elevating Austin. WWF got that feud right.

And Austin used to be a technical wrestler before the botched piledriver that fucked his neck up
tbh Austin was actually really good at wrestling in general as well, but after his injury he quickly adapted and switched to more brawling and less rolling around while doing it in a way that was still legit
Austin wasn't a brawler yet not until after Owen broke his neck
Heel Bret was where he shined
on balance, Bret Hart is the greatest that ever was
Some reta ded freaks would lose the will to live reading this.
Bret could go over but legitimize u
You goddamn right. Or he could put YOU over and make you look like you EARNED it
Hart is for sure in that convo Austin before the neck injury was amazing I know he is hated for good reason but Benito is up there Rick and Scott Steiner Steamboat Bob Backlund people don't relisze how good he was Mr Perfect Kurt Angel
@@dominiquejones3805bs excuse for Bret never wanting to do the job . He wanted to win every single match because he was mark who thought it was real . Steve Austin was mega hot and was becoming a star regardless of Bret hart
My first wrestling tape was WM5 I got from my uncle. U could see it n the tag match, Bret was ready. His mic work as a heel🔥
in the 80's I was a Piper fan over Hogan. Piper was the best heel I ever saw. In the 90's Bret became the man once he went singles.
I was watching that ppv live and as soon as Hart started walking up the ropes in the Million $ Dream, I yelled out
"MANIA 8!!!!!!", lol...
Also the ring bell. Piper used it to become a babyface while Bret used it to become a heel.
This was my favorite rivalry back when I was a kid.
Same.I feel it didn’t ever get a good ending.
Mines was Jake vs addiction.
I always prefer how some wrestlers say that who they are in ring is themselves pushed to 11.
They just amped up their personalities. Heel Bret was definitely coming from a genuine place
This was so great to watch. And I love how much respect Hart and Austin have for one another, and the fact that they’re still friends now.
He have a great respect to Randy Savage too
I wished we could of seen Austin vs pillman . rattlesnake vs lose cannon
"Pillman's Got A Gun" is one of my favorite episodes of Raw ever.
Austin introduces Brian Pillman Jr to WWE Universe
Do another watch along. I know they did their Mania match. I’d love Jim and Brian to do Shawn and Taker mania 25
The rivalry that saved the WWE
AOL and Time Warner?
@@baboracus that's the dumbest comment of the day lol
the montreal screw job and the curtain call were two huge butterfly effect moments in WWF history.
Wow. Very I sightful lmao😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
"Ringmaster sucked but it was my foot in the door." One of my most favorite things Steve has ever said out of character.
The Travelin' Man gimmick is a hilarious idea. Reminds me of the Randy Orton gimmick when he sent in updates about his injury recovery.
This video has been saved to my favorites purely for the manscaped ad at the end. Amazing.
You know Jim Cornette is a legend when he makes the advertisement entertaining.
5:07 "You can't be bald and stunning, I'm sorry"😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
In my opinion, this is the best feud. It had everything. I'll never forget Stone Cold's black and white Surviver Series Promo to Bret. It's my favourite promo of all time. Bret's wrestling improved just when you couldn't think it could be improved. Love every bit of it
@hollaatmeross Pink tights...what the hell is that all about Bret? This ain't no Ballet class...what a load of crap!
"It's 3:16, Bret! Time to whip your ass!"
41:57 The end of this manscape promo.....🤣🤣🤣🤣😭
Awesome enough said about this rivalry. Shame we didn’t get more. But it was perfect.
They really made u believe they hated each other come 2 find out they were cool
Lol Austin's nose hair best Segway into a sponsor and dog gone what a pitch I'm dying laughing
I knew people who didn't like wrestling and didn't watch wrestling but they had a poster of Stone Cold's bloody, screaming face on their wall. Truly an iconic image!
One of the greatest feuds in pure wrestling terms...great story line...great wrestling
I live in the UK I'm so pissed that I don't get to see these A&E documentaries!!!
Jim nails everything that has gone down the tubes with wrestling since then.
Damn I wished these guys would’ve had a year long program
Imagine if Vince wouldn’t have reneged on Bret’s contract, and if Owen hadn’t broken Austin’s neck, shit would be bananas.
Wish Bret stayed and we got a WM match between the 2 where Austin got his win
@@korubi_eCSTatic imagine if Vince didn't back off The Black Hart character on Owen. It writes itself
Jim singing lyrics to “Words” by Missing Persons is a DEEP cut.
12:20 Man this really sounds exactly like what it's happening to LA Knight right now.
28:24 His finisher was literally a submission - Million dollar dream
This is the only show in the world where you look forward to the commercials because Corny’s advertising chops are hilarious 😂😂😂
It was short but it was memorable as hell.
My all time fave rivalry is Austin vs Bret Hart (& the Hart Foundation)!! It was pure magic! The BEST story telling in a d out of the ring ever!
Telly Savalas, good call, Brian. I am bald, and Jim’s right, I am not stunning. Maybe stunning in a Shrek sense.
Here’s a question, would it work in reverse? Like if Austin kept his hair, could he still embody the Stone Cold character?
I was 11/12 when I saw this feud and I honestly believed these 2 wanted to kill each other. Amazing rivalry!!
I watched the Survior series match last night and I never knew that Steve Austin was so good at selling. I only ever saw Stone Cold as a kid
@@manuelper Exactly. It really makes you think whether it was for the best that the Montreal Screwjob went down if you're a WWE fan.
Didn't have a choice
One of my favourite promo's from Austin during this rivalry was "If you put the letter S in front of Hitman, you'd have my exact opinion of Bret Hart".
The ad that they did was fantastic! 10 out of 10
Thing about WM13 is, the double turn wasnt complete until Bret attacked Steve after the match and powdered to Shamrock. When the bell rang to end the match, the crowd popped for Bret initially.
They highlighted the stone cold's face when he heard Brets music
can someone tell me where these rival shows stream online ? peacock ?
A&E
This was the perfect transition from the Federation to the Attitude era, the biggest eras in wrestling history, and my favourite rivalry of all time, with 2 of my favourite wrestlers
This was the greatest rivalry if all time to me because my best friend was a die hard Brett Hart fan and I was all about Steve Austin because I became a fan since his Stunning Steve Austin days.
One if my favorite things about Brett vs Steve at Mania was the fan (when the action was in the stands) was able to rub both wrestlers heads.
SCSA is one guy Bret Hart has never had a bad word to say about.
Their street fight at RAW is the most memorable to me
The agony Austin put Bret in using Bret's own move (even stone cold used to put reasonable sharpshooter)
For months he actually used wheelchair and walking sticks - only after full fall down of Kayfabe and autobiographies we know it was all work for Bret to actually get his knee operated
Best rivalry ever for me
The Survivor Series finish was like Piper/Hart from Wrestlemania
honestly, this was the best. better than Bret and Shawn or The Rock snd Stone Cold, this was the ONE in the 90's. These two guys actually resepected each other a lot, but it felt so epic and real when they faught. Kudos to both for putting on great performances.
Wakes up screaming and pissing the bed! That should be gargoyles new t shirt. Lol
It was Roddy Pipper had Bret in the full nelson, and Bret did a turn buckle roll up for the win of the IC belt. BTW
Bruce and Conrad had a Deep Dive about Steve. Even up to when Steve left the company.
@William Mitchell I was just listening to that episode a few days ago that podcast is awesome
Jim is 100 percent right I literally shave because when I’m chilling at night watching RUclips it’s itchy I hate it. 😂
Johnny Gargano was embarrassing on this, he's still the 10 year old watching instead of remembering BEING the 10 year old watching
Trav pulls through once again,!!! This thumbnail art is effing BRILLIANT. Id buy and wear it if it were a shirt.
Jim, the Survivor Series
Austin/Bret match, it may have ended like Stasiak & Morales, but the very second I saw how it ended, as I watched it live, I knew immediately it was the same as the end of the WRESTLEMANIA VIII Match between Hart vs Piper. Same finish.
After watching this and the Shawn one, all i could think was, if only WM14 main event was him finally getting his win over Bret for the title. That Shawn rivalry was nothing.
Lmfaoooo that manscape ad was WILD 36:00
I love it "Traveling Man" cause I like being on vacation 😅😅😅
I've been recently rewatching 96-97 Raw so I didn't need to watch this but everything JC said about this rivalry is dead on. The thing is, if you brought this type of booking and presentation back, it would still work infinitely better than the BS presented today, especially the extra shitty stuff that is Dynamite. Sure, you don't have Austin or Bret, but the fans would eat this shit up still.
Quick Question when is the last time we seen a Press Slam with a few presses before the slam....ill wait???????
Bret Hart truly is the best there was, is and will be. He loves wrestling and was absolutely selfless in getting Steve Austin over.
Canadian stampede
In terms of straight wrestling this is one of if not my faviorte rivalry of alltime the Undertaker and Mankind was great to Cactus Jack and Vader DDP and Savage Austin and Vince Steamboat Flair there were so many great ones even Hart Michales but those were just of few of my faviortes that come to mind
Hollywood Blonds was only a couple of months? Felt like they lasted for at least a year.
One of the best rivalries hands down. Bret brought out the best in Steve.
I’m only here for the arbitrary On Her Majesty’s Secret Service Blofeld reference.
Died into laughter with the nose hairs 😂
I was such a Bret Hart fan in 97, I thought Shamrock was a heel for slamming Bret off of Austin.
I never really understood that Bret was a heel at the time. I 100% thought the American fans were the heels lol 😂
One of the best promo lines came from this feud when austin said "You put S infront of hitman you have my exact opinon of bret hart"
