  • It's the first real test for the Hilleberg Soulo BL against strong winds in the Lake District. I take the Soulo BL on a 2-night adventure to see if it can stand up to the hype against strong wind and heavy rain.

Anyone that says it's overkill hasn't been out in the lakes on a typical day, trust me I've lived here in the western lakes all my life, just outside Ennerdale and there's never been a tent I've owned that's made me feel safe in bad weather until the Soulo BL.
If anything the weather is getting worse the past few years, more wind and rain than ever.

Anyone's kit is simply down to their own personal preference for their own reasons which is why there is so much kit out there to cater for everyone's need. Buy what you like, you've earned the money so reward yourself and enjoy. From this video we can certainly see the enjoyment you get from your investments. Keep up the cracking videos mate 👍

At the tender age of 57 I've wasted vast amounts of money buying "it'll do kit" in all of my hobbies: Motorcycling, camping, photography, video, hiking, cooking..... and you end up buying what you should have bought in the first place... and ironically it would have been cheaper in the long run. Enjoy your investment. All the best CK

Brilliant video mate and very well put together, love the drone footage too.
I love my Soulo, I have the red label not the black, but still I love it knowing I feel secure no matter how the weather changes during the night. Ive had my little Helm Compact 1 in some stupid wind to be fair and that has held its own while a lad with a Banshee has his pole snap! But it comes to a point with certain weather when you want that bit more lol. Especially on a summit camp!
Thanks for sharing looks like you had a great adventure there.

The area around Sprinkling Tarn is beautiful. Aside from allowing you to camp in nearly any condition (I’ve had a tent fail on me as well) … there is just something special about a Hilleberg! Enjoyed the video!

Great timing for the upload, I was out in my Soulo BL last night! Nowhere like this though, I just fancied a night in it so popped into a local woods and made steaks with a friend haha. Great video bud, really nice to see the tent holding up so well, as it should!

Firstly, what a beautifully shot video and I loved the drone footage. I slept in an MSR Elixir 3 on my Mountain Leader Training course in Nant Peris and the wind bent the poles. I’ve slept on Dartmoor in my Hubba Hubba and I thought the top cross pole was going to snap. When I got home from my ML course I bought a BL Soulo too and my only regret is that I got a green one rather than the sand colour. It’s been to Snowdonia and the Cairngorms but not the lakes yet. I’ve taken it on DofE camps too just because I love sleeping in it! I had my windiest camp ever in the Cairngorms last December and the tent survived even though I thought it was going to get damaged. I had 2 hours sleep that night and water was blown through the cracks in the zips. It was so windy I didn’t dare climb or camp higher up. I’m sorry that you have to suffer using the MSR trail shot too. I need a new pump even though I’ve replaced the filter and looked after it.

Hey Ben, I actually love my trail shot, although you’re not the first I’ve heard who dislikes it. Thanks for getting in touch, good to hear of your experience and glad you like the BL too. I’m back out in the lakes again at the end of may so watch this space for my next films.

Good morning Rich, what a smashing treat to start our Saturday morning! Love this area and sparked many fond memories for us ❤⛰
Smashing video as always, such a great mix of shots and footage, and great editing! Been looking forward to this since seeing you social media posts, the photos dont quite capture the harsness of the elements! Fair play to you and the BL for sticking it out, must be nice having that piece of mind in your rucksack 👍🏕
Well done for getting warm and dry, super important! Cant wait to get back to the lakes, still keeping our fingers crossed it will be this year 🤞 your videos only make our desire burn stronger! Going to keep watching waiting to see what's ahead in the morning!.....

Interesting to hear your thoughts on the tent and camping to Rich, each to their own isnt it, know where your going, what your doing and what you need to be confident and comfortable in what ever location you choose. Some of that experience can only be gained by a moment of awakening, that awakening might well be very literal with a tent collapsing on you! Something you need not fear in your BL 🏕❤👍
Loved the Tarn, just beautiful....well nearly 😐 litter louts! Still dont understand how or why people leave rubbish. Stunning stunning veiws and definitely worth the bad weather! Great 2nd pitch 🤗⛰....

Respect for carrying out other people's rubbish and reminding us why it's so important to leave no trace. 👍👍👍

Had a 3 season tent flattened in a storm so got a tarra which is considerable more overkill than your soulo to make sure it didnt happen again. Bought smaller hilleberg tents since then including the nammatj, nallo, akto and finally the soulo.
You can't compete with the man that said you are afraid becasue he is clearly a real man, afraid of nothing and goes hillwalking in storms wearing only his underpants.

The main thing i like sorry love about the Soulo is that its the easiest tent i have used to pitch in the wind......My old favorite tent nearly had me parascending off a mountain once in a bid to keep hold of it during a storm. Recently i just fancied a change and thought about buying the Tarp tent so sold my five year old Soulo for 750 0n Ebay than i had a deeper think and felt a sense of regret so the very next day i bout a brand new one from Tiso for 895 so when you concider how much use i had and worked out the cost per night its honestly an incredible investment and ultimatly like you mentioned all that peace of mind plus the confidence it instills...The amount of stories i have heard lately about poles breaking and other types of material damage is becoming more and more regular....Never underestimate the severity of the British Isles even on the low Peaks and plateaus of the Peak District it can equal the Alps..Great video ....Thanks

11:00 exactly how I feel in my STAIKA - no stress. I get much better sleep when I don't have to worry. Initially I could not choose from many of Hillebergs and went for durability. It was recommended for a cycling tour in Norway. Knowing their weather conditions I thought I can't go wrong. Black label with 10mm poles and stronger fabric does excellent job silencing wind and rain outside, not that much shake of tent.

But to be honest, even the standard Soulo could handle 97,5% of EVERY CONDITIONS you could and wanna be in it. I have the Soulo since it first came out in Summer 2008. And I had many many nights under very rough conditions in the Highland desert of Iceland in Summer and Winter. Believe me, it could handle it. The only situation I could think of to buy the BL-Version is for High Attitude Mountaineering or Hugh Amounts of Snow......but for Deep Winter the inside Space could become a bit cramped for a tale Person like me. And even 400gr more weight is a big MINUS....cause getting near to 3kg now for a Single P is A LOT of WEIGHT.
So my Decision was to keep the Soulo red Label for TOUGH Spring - Fall Tours where weight matters and smaller inside space is not a big problem. For long Winter Solo Trips with thick sleeping bags and cloths I have the Jannu ( both in red colour) and for all the rest of possible trips I have a Nallo 2 that I bouht recently as ( WAIT FOR IT ) NOS and First Generation from the end of the 1980ties in sand colour.. ( NEVER USED )......and the Nallo`s back from that periode were even made from the long time ago discontinued Kerlon 1500 and labeled MADE IN SWEDEN.
If I could only have one tent for a Single Person, even then I would choose the Standart Soulo red Label, because of it`s weight Advantage.
BUT ITS JUST MY 50 CENTs
    Cheers

    • @WildAstro
      @WildAstro  2 года назад

It makes sense to not upgrade from RL to BL, but as I’ve never had a Soulo until now, I chose the BL. If I had a RL, I wouldn’t have bothered.
