This is my favourite video of all time. I was literally screaming with laughter, I could barely breathe lool. I have done every single one of the things you mentioned, even the standing in the kitchen (with my girlfriend), saying nothing, attempting to make a "short film" haha. The flowers, the forest, the manual focus, the backlighting, the lens flares, every single thing was spot on. I keep sending my mum BEAUTIFUL videos where nothing happens and she has started replying...."yeah nice" hahaha. I won a Black Magic 6K in an international film competition 6 months ago and so I've been sucked into the world of gear hype and rigging out and trying so so so hard just to have battery life and stable footage and sharp focus. I'm absolutely loving the experience as a new filmmaker, but I'm so glad I watched this because we need to be called out on it...It is ridiculous. I've just sat and binge watched a bunch of your videos and they are super refreshing and sobering after all of the youtube salesmen and gear wars. Excited to see what you create in the future, big fan! Kyan

It's sad that this idea is so oversaturated these days. Though, it's kinda nice seeing all these idiots making art they don't understand since the medium is so accessible now; probably why it gets so many views (also, social media nonsense).
That question of "What is she doing? Where is she going?" was a big part of any photo for decades (centuries for paintings), because it drew the viewer in and made them imagine what that world would be... i.e. READ A BOOK, PLEASE!
It needs to be addressed. They're selling a pretty photo, or nice video, that means nothing so they can sell something.
Nobody is being challenged, and nobody is thinking passed the pretty colours.

You are 100% right. Most of the cinematic videos on YT are just 20-30 random takes filmed with one of the BMPCCs. In most of them there is not story, unless you believe that someone walking the dog is story enough. But some of them are very pleasing to watch. I guess every DP started somewhere, from shooting random stuff. If you know how to shoot staff, then if you got a story to tell, you are better prepared. And yes I love shooting random stuff with my BMPCC 6k ;).

I think that when Kasey talks about "filmmakers", he actually refers to those RUclipsrs delivering "cinematic" slow-motion b-roll without any story. To me a real filmmaker always creates a compelling story, which looks like a movie, with human element e.g. voice, great compositions, lighting, depth, camera movement, colors etc. There are true filmmakers in RUclips, and nowadays I tend to subscribe to their channels rather than another gear reviewer's channel. Thank you Kasey for raising this topic up!

I have been watching so many of your videos today. It started because I've been so mentally stuck on what kind of camera I have to get. And somehow while going down the rabbit hole that is you... I've come to this video and I'm sitting here thinking about all the things that I feel like I've had to push myself towards just to be "good" at video. And Now I feel like I don't know anything anymore. lol
I've been dabbling a little bit in "cinematic" videos and even though they've been well received, you've given me a lot to think about as I make them. I try to tell a story in them, but perhaps sometimes that is hard to understand. But on the bright side, it's not just me walking through the woods... Instead it's a lot of shots that have been described to me as "gross", "beautiful", and "I love to see the bunnies eating". Now I must go contemplate the future of my channel... And whether or not I need blurrier backgrounds to get more subscribers...

There is a "broadcast media vs blogger" snobbery with manufacturers (they don't even know its "Vlogger" now). I go to a trade show to record demos. I see "bloggers" treated like crap because they use little tiny cams. Once I saw a guy holding up his laptop to livestream. Fortunately, I've been taking a Sony Camcorder with one of those big shotgun mics attached. So I can pass as broadcast media and I'm ok. Thing is, local broadcasters, the clips are shown on the morning show and then gone. RUclips content is available forever.

I actually agree with the notion that most RUclipsrs aren't filmmakers. It doesn't matter how you make a film or a RUclips video. RUclips videos just aren't usually considered films, and if you aren't making films, then you aren't a filmmaker. I don't even consider myself to be a filmmaker unless I am working on a film. When I make a youtube video, I am a RUclipsr. Also... why the hell does it matter? Just create and enjoy. You make great content and we love it. So there.

I love your videos, especially the one on Cinematic video. I recently saw a RUclips video shot in smartphone vertical format which claimed to be be Cinematic because it was in slow motion. I saw Ben Hur in the 1960's in widescreen in a cinema and it didn't have
any slow motion shots or claim to be cinematic. It was simply a great movie to watch in its day. Your RUclips videos are so real and enjoyable to watch.
I wonder what you think of all the camera reviews on RUclips that focus mostly on video but only show a few samples of it and mostly show a lot of drab, dull Log footage which is not always converted to dynamic video. I think in 2020 "wide dynamic range" now means totally drab, dull and boring without any contrast and shadows, instead of vibrant and living.

Actual filmmaking is so ludicrously difficult, because it is a giant team event you can't accomplish alone.
Scheduling dozens of people, getting permits, insurance, union laws, contracts, releases, production design, props, wardrobe, makeup, choreography, location scouting, shot sheets, overheads, storyboarding, casting, crewing up, equipment, feeding all those people, working at breakneck speed to not waste any money paying 20+ people every minute. Somewhere in all that there is cinematography, lighting, and don't get started on post production.
It's really too bad that quality scriptwriting and content gets lost in the shuffle of "professional grade image quality"
A lot times, all that effort is bested by a guy in his living room with a camera ranting about something that resonates with our personal experience.
I can see it takes dedication to do youtube, but professional filmmaking can eat you up too in its own grueling way.

There's a youtuber called Shiey who actually behaves like a real filmmaker. He jumps trains with a stick. Only there's an action cam on the stick. Being a hobo youtuber and filmmaker at the same time!

LOL, this is one of my favourite episodes, spot on, I love filming nothing with lots of flares... I don't, I hate flares! My actor friends are all goofballs so my videos are just dumb.

Got you. You are a stand up comedy guy. A good one. Or should I say a “sit down comedy guy?”.

"That's sad! I don't want to watch a movie to feel sad!" I get this almost every time I recomend a good movie to someone that isn't an outright comedy.

Great rant. Filmmakers are a jealous bunch maybe? You tubers can be the same way - if you make selfish content (i.e. showcasing your lens flares) its just flexing. I click off youtube vids that are the same way.
