he started his career too well. simple as that. one of the like 3 best starts to a career ever… real goat potential… younger than tatum and shai. He has set the bar way too fucking high and a 27-7-7 line for him looks pitiful relative to what he has shown to be normal for him. suffering from success if you will. yet, he’s too good to squander his career - he’s gonna go down as the 1b to jokics 1a in this generation of ball.

Way too sensational. The answer to that is, without any semblance of a doubt, Joel Embiid. Can play like an MVP when healthy, but he plays a disgustingly awful brand of basketball (tons of flopping, foul baiting, and dirty reckless play), can’t stay healthy to begin with, hasn’t made it past the 2nd round no matter which stars he’s paired with, and never takes any personal responsibility for the 76ers’ shortcomings, always blaming either the coaches, other players, refs, or even the fans, as was the case in the 2024 playoffs

Luka was carrying his team while he was literally BLEEDING through his knees
They gave him so much meds so he could only play
And he still got injuried this season as well
He didnt play in the early season and even tho his injury wasnt that bad, it still annoys him and if you ever seen Luka play for more than 2min you can clearly see that there is still something wrong with him
Still he drops freaking 28 POINTS EACH GAME
And ppl still give him trash
The mavs are going through a build up

If he doesn’t have the ball, he’s fucking USELESS. If he doesn’t have the ball you are essentially playing with 4 people on the court, he doesn’t do shit if he doesn’t have the ball.
Lastly, he’s got a terrible attitude that gets swept under the rug by the league. There’s been examples of him being an absolute dog shit teammate and premadonna but it doesn’t get big coverage because the nba wants him to be the face to get an even bigger Europe fan base.

Also the fact that people shoot more threes just makes any point comparison between eras nearly irrelevant. The average game in the 2000s went around 100-110. Now it is common to see 120 weekly. That also goes for assists and rebounds also. Everything is inflated.

Luka is the most talented player in the NBA. It is heartbreaking he refuses to put in the work to realize his talent. Even with his current "playing his way into shape" plan, he is 2nd only to SGA in production for PGs. If he avoids injury, he'll make a run at another title. Does he have enough talent to overcome his refusal to train or play defense? Not both. But his defensive metrics are above average so far in 2024-25 (not that he still doesn't have the bad habits of standing around and taking plays off). Personally, I like him but I can't invest time and energy in him as a fan, if he isn't willing to invest in himself...

having watched the mavs without him, i cant help but love the way they play. luka is a blackhole on offence, much like wilt was. he has little fluidity and settles for these 3pters that look forced. the mavs have insane role pieces that are used to having to play as a team, as a role player. Without luka they continue this style but without the burden of Luka taking the selfish shot over and over again so they find the right shot, the correct time to drive and space the floor so much better. But idk if its sustainable, Lukas best games are still unbelievable and the guy you would have to rely on during the play offs. He just has to be a team player a bit more. eitherway im happy watching the nuggets, their basketball is fucking beautiful.

Yes his defense is lazy and yes his conditioning is bad, but whoever questions him or says he is hurting his team needs to just check the stats. He has been winning since his first day in the league, has led his team almost singlehandedly to deep playoff runs putting up monster numbers, has been snubbed for MVP at least twaice and on defense the refs disrespect him giving him bs calls, just because of the narative that he's bad on defense.

I hope someone who really understands advanced stats/sabermetrics can help me/& us out here.
Last year it was clear to me that Luka was one of the 4 *best* players in the World.
Joker was best for 4 straight years .
Giannis was near the tippy top for years. SGA ascended to Mount Rushmore status.
And Luka...He does have those flaws. But he like Harden-who was the best player in the league/world for several years-even counting in defense total production per minute or overall: is up there too.
Even above Tatum, Edwards never approached that level yet-he is just not very efficient yet, an extremely poor man's Jordan.
But WHY does Luka get a better Value Over Replacement rating last year?
Same time, conference, positions: what justifies his greater rating relative to his box +/-, win shares, WS per 48, efficiency, etc.?
Again, the critiques may all be fair-but that did not look like an offensive foul to me-but Luka, Harden & others like, say Ali in boxing...STILL are among the very very best in Total Value!

Lazy take. Harden's playoff implosions are well documented. Luka has been the complete opposite, he's an all time great playoff performer. That's a pretty big delineation if you ask me.
It's easy to see the Boston series as Luka's fault. Again, that's lazy. Boston was just the deeper team. Jaylen and JT performed TERRIBLY but they had enough other guys to contribute. On the other hand, Kyrie didn't contribute as he normally did and the Mavs as a team were missing wide open shots at an unprecedented rate. Even with all Luka's flaws, Mavs defense held Boston to about 100 pts/game but they didn't have enough offensively as a team.
Also just focusing on the Boston series ignores how Luka led the Mavs to series wins over 3 of the top 4 teams in the West without home court. And we all remember what he did to the 60-win Suns in a Game 7 on their court.
Long story short, sure he may end up being ringless like Harden but to date their playoff resumes aren't comparable in the least.
