- I show how I prepare for the first engine start, the start itself. After the one minute engine I run, I take a first 10 mile ride to ensure the rings bed in correctly. You can read all the details here: brook.reams.me/bmw-motorcycle...

Your welcome Babur 😊
Congratulations Brook on a successful start-up!
Indeed. That's a long 60 seconds when you first get the engine to run and you are listening for any "bad" sounds. :-)
Thanks a lot for the video, and your always tidy quality workmanship, we all can learn a lot from. Haven't ridden much due to the 2020 situation, but had my R75/7 out today. Thanks again 👍
Hi Jacob, Thanks for coming by to watch. I too am hopeful that I'll get to ride this project soon and rack up some miles. I installed heated grips, so I hope to keep riding over the winter season.
Really enjoyed your videos. Your craftmanship and your very relaxed way of explaining.....
Haven't seen them all, but now this video! The cherry on the cake. And how it's running.... that's what makes BMW such a fine bike.
Wish you many happy kilometers ( :-) from Holland!
Thank you zeeland1044. I've put about 300 miles on "Cookie Monster" so far. Still sorting some things out, which is typical of a rebuild of this scale. :-)
EME dual plug conversion and brushless alt were really good upgrades for my RT.
That’s what I call the perfection in Art congratulations
Thanks Nader,
That bike looks brand new! Excellent job!
Thanks Grant. I can't wait to get the fairing installed. :-)
Thanks Grant. I can't wait to get the fairing installed. :-)
Just picked up an '80 R100. It's in pretty good shape but I am diving-in to familiarize myself with this bike. This is a great video. thanks.
Ian I wish you all the best on your project 😀
@@BrooksAirheadGarage Thanks!
I wished I was your neighbor and could learn from you. I love yout working accuracy and your passion for the old boxer
Steppenwolf, Thank you for the kind words.
What an Education, Thanks Brook.
You're welcome Malcolm.
Great to watch. Very informative. Thank you.
You're welcome Alan.
I was wondering about the time! that unit is new to me, very fancy!!............I really like that paint combination that you will have!!......Very nice video a lot of great information there!!
Thanks Alan.
What a beauty
Thank you Rey. 🙂
I have a BMW RT80R that am working on and have found the 2 bottle type 6volt coils faulty so have replaced with a single twin pole spark plug lead...🇵🇬
Cheers 🐝

Perfect work, well done, CONGRATS
Thank you Steppenwolf. The first engine start is always a moment of truth. You keep asking yourself "What did I forget?" This time the answer was "Nothing." :-)

I have set a R100GS from 1993 in operation after 12 years of storage recently. Thank God engine and transmission were okay 👌 and didn’t need work.
I love the old boxers
Very thorough.Attention to detail is on another level.A pleasure to watch,as I have the same model.Thank-you for all your posts.
You're welcome Don. Thanks for coming by to take a look.
Great overview - a very useful orientation for newbies to airheads, like myself.
(-:
Thank you EvLoutonian
Real world testament to EmE quality my Alt output wires were in a delrin connector pancake stacked and the wires had squish short for months then darkness due to constant short burning said connector. The great part the system did not fry or get damaged electronic ignition or 450 brushless which well is brushless so no real heat. Great customer service too! Great system 45 ooo kms on it at higher revs than beemer world may like. LOL! PS I bodged Lucas 30 years plus so appreciate the ditching of diode board. Germans 8x Lucas zenor diode thingy.
congratulatuons you re the best i fallow u and see all your video if you cant we want see new video about 80 rt frome A to Z thank u sur
great informative videos ! i couldn't help but notice that most of these airheads have oil coolers added to them should i add one to mine (1977rs) ?! is it mandatory ? now mine is not running yet, what should i expect from the engine temperature !
Hi Johan,
This is a decent review of the value of oil coolers and why BMW added them.
--> bmwmotorcycletech.info/coolers.htm
Unfortunately BMW really complicated the simple procedure of changing the oil filter when they added the oil cooler and changed how they seal the oil filter canister using a white O-ring and shims. Not their finest hour IHMO. :-)
Great idea about cross-wiring the coils on the wasted spark ignition to optimise the energy for each cylinder.👍
you all prolly dont give a shit but does anyone know a way to get back into an instagram account..?
I somehow lost my login password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me!
@Thiago Vance Instablaster :)
@Dane Damari i really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
@Dane Damari it worked and I finally got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thanks so much you really help me out :D
@Thiago Vance glad I could help :)
Any suggestions for the lack of 14mm master cylinder repair kits. Can the single use washer be reused with epoxy resin or similar.
Alan, For the master cylinder, try contacting Tom Cutter at Rubber Chicken Racing Garage (rubberchickenracing@gmail.com). He may have what you need. If something is "single use" I replace it.
Excellent! quick question; from where did you get your fuel lines? Thanks much
Hi Kevin. I think I got those from McMaster Carr several years ago. They are Tygon. There are different types of Tygon, so look for the kind that is ethanol and gasoline resistant. I also believe you can get this is black these days. I hope this helps.
@@BrooksAirheadGarage Thank you very much for your response
I've never seen the fuel level in the float bowl described as a depth measure such as you checked in this video. Where did that spec come from? Do you believe it is identical to that for the 32mm carburetors on my R100R?
MrTriple3, the depth for the 40 mm carb is different from that for the 32 mm carbs. The depth for 32 mm carbs is 24 mm and the depth for 40 mm carbs is 28 mm depth. You can read all about that in this posting by Robert Fleischer, a long-time BMW airhead mechanic and guru:
--> bmwmotorcycletech.info/bingcv-2.htm
@@BrooksAirheadGarage Thank you for the reply. My adjustment apparently resulted in the fuel level 2 mm too low. (It's consistent though, left and right lol). Your videos set the standard for excellence! Thank you for your outstanding work.
Hi Brook, I am currently at the point of first engine start on my 1983 r100. Just installed new set of Siebenrock jugs and pistons. It its currently winter here in Finland and i can't ride for another 2-3 months, so im wondering if I can do the first start now and the first ride later, or should I leave the starting for the spring? I would really like to start it to see if everything is working. Thanks.
Catas, sure you can to the 1st engine start now and wait for the break in ride. I've done that before. Good to hear you are keeping another airhead on the road. 🙂
@@BrooksAirheadGarage Thanks for your reply!
Your videos are vital information for us new airhead owners so big thanks to you! Hope you keep making more videos, restoration series is a fun watch! Take care!
Do you need to open up the gas line for the 2nd and carb on your right side before you ride it?
Lou, the engine will run with only one petcock open, but it's a good idea to open both to guarantee you have ample fuel flow when you have the throttle wide-open. Each petcock has a reserve position. My habit is to switch to reserve on the left only and when it runs out switch the right petcock to reserve. That way I get an idea of how many more miles I have before I get to walk. :-)
@@BrooksAirheadGarage thank you for your reply. Just curious how many miles can you go before you reserve runs out? Thank you in advance.
@Lou Primo I get about 50 mpg with a 6.5 gallon tank.
@@BrooksAirheadGarage thank you again Sir.
how do i run in new piston ring on old cylinders ? Thanks in advance.
I’d break them in the same way. After the 1st start, rude about 20 mins varying RPM to max of 4000. Also, I'd hone the cylinder walls before installing the new rings so the cross-hatch is renewed and the rings will seat in quickly.
@@BrooksAirheadGarage also on Nikisil cylinder from 1985 ?
