  • The first step to doing an analysis in SPSS is having your variables set up properly. We are going to begin with a blank dataset, create five variables, and then learn how to set up numeric variables. You will learn about naming variables, variable labels, and coding values for categorical variables.
    This video teaches the following commands and techniques:
    Create variables in SPSS
    Numeric variables
    Naming variables
    Variable labels
    Variable values
    Link to a Google Drive folder with all of the files that I use in the videos including the Bear Handout and datasets. As I add new files, they will appear here, as well.

    If I am conducting a study using likert scales, would I put each question as a variable? If so I’m guessing I would then put the values as the different responses they could have to the questions. Thanks!

    • @ResearchByDesign
      @ResearchByDesign  4 года назад +2

      Great question...the answer depends on several factors. Best practices would be that your Likert scale items use at least 5 answer options, and be measuring the same construct. Then you can combine multiple items into a single score (mean or sum) and that becomes your variable. In this example, each facet of job satisfaction (i.e. satisfaction with pay, satisfaction with coworkers) was measured with three similar Likert items which were then averaged into a single score.

    Hello, I have tried to extend the column width in the Values column in SPSS Variable View and it still doesn't display all the information. Is there any way to make sure the entire contents of the Values columns are visible? Thank you.

    In my study I obtained basic demographic information but also wanted to know past medical history. I made a varible column and named it “history” then in the name section I made it 0-10 (0 being no history, 1 hypertension, 2 diabetes and so on). What do I do if a subject has more than one past medical history? For instance one has hypertension and diabetes. Do I need additional variables for each?

    • @ResearchByDesign
      @ResearchByDesign  4 года назад

      The way to code what you are describing is using "dummy variables". You would want one variable for each comorbidity, each coded 0 or 1 for if they have the disease or not (0 = no). You can then create a new variable for people with multiple comorbidities (also coded as 1 & 0) or you can examine each type separately or in relation to others.

    I have a question. In my survey, I have demographic questions as well as different measures. I was able to create variables for the demographics. However, I am not sure how to create variables for the different measures. Also, some of the measures have subscales which I am not entirely sure on how to create the variable.

      @ResearchByDesign  3 года назад

      Great question...but not one I can answer in the comments. You need to select related items and them combine them either as a total or as a mean. The validation article for the scales/subscales should have a description of how they are combined. You have to make multiple choices in this process, so I can't give you one-size-fits-all advice. I'd recommend you to a statistician or advisor who could help walk you through the process.

    If all my questions are coded with numbers do all the measurement types become Ordinal?

    • @ResearchByDesign
      @ResearchByDesign  5 лет назад +1

      Not necessarily...the standard for the level of measurement is the thing being measured rather than the numbers. If you are measuring categories, then your numbers would be nominal. If the categories have an order, they would be ordinal. But if you are measuring on a Likert scale with 5+ options, you can treat the answers as scale level. Hope that helps.

      I get all of my music from Digital Juice. It is all royalty-free and high quality. That one is called "Pull Me Under". You know, I really ought to go back and add that kind of information in the description. Thanks for asking.

    Sir why you have entered 2 in the Anxiety Decimal Cell ? Please explain

    • @ResearchByDesign
      @ResearchByDesign  3 года назад

      I entered 2 for decimal for the anxiety scores because I wanted to represent them as total scores that had the possibility of decimals. It was mostly for teaching purposes rather than about anxiety

    How can I code one correct answer multiple choice question item and analyze them?

    • @ResearchByDesign
      @ResearchByDesign  3 года назад

      I would recode into a new variable for the MC item. Let's say you have answer choices A, B, C, & D and C is correct. I would recode C = 1, all others = 0. Now you have a single variable that shows whether or not the individual got that item correct. You can do descriptive statistics from there. Good luck

    Hi Prof, could you help recode parity of cows into primiparous and multiparous. I would like to have cows who have calved atleast a calf to be primiparous and more than one calf as multiparous. Thanks so mcuh.

    • @ResearchByDesign
      @ResearchByDesign  Год назад

      Try the "Recode into Different Variable" approach. You would set "number of calves" to 1 = 1 and 2+ = 2. That way any cow with two or more calves would be in the multiparous group. I am assuming you have a scale variable counting the number of calves born to a cow

    what if we don`t change the decimal option to zero?

      You will still get the same output in SPSS. I like the zero decimal option as a way to make the dataset cleaner. Personal preference.

    what is the use of the other columns???

    • @ResearchByDesign
      @ResearchByDesign  3 года назад

      There are other variables in other columns, those are probably what you are looking at. I did not use those other variables in this example, but I do use them for different illustrations in regression, etc. Hope that clarifies.
