The lyrics capture the torture of bitterness against a world the "freedom fighters" envy and hate. "But I'll make em pay with an IED." Sonically aggressive, complicated, with a guitar solo that kills. Just like the subject matter. Wilson is able to capture the inner workings of an evil, tortured mind like no one else...and the music itself is an enhancement of that aspect. Just stunning.
What a song, in an instant there is the unique surrealism of S.W's music then in an instant you are transported to the sounds of Brian Auger in the 60s/70s....... Unsurpassed masterpiece!
This song, live, has an UNBELIEVABLE power. The bass ostinato, the instruments building up a tense sound cathedral, together with the background video with the dancing ladies-with-no-face, multiplying each other and marching to get and catch you! I remember I went through it in full apnea, and still feel the same watching this now...AMAZING
Same here. Discovered Porcupine Tree by accident when Spotify inserted "Time Flies" into a Pink Floyd playlist I was listening to in the background at work in September 2018. Within 3 months I got lucky enough to catch him a club show for the "To The Bone" tour about 200 miles from my house. I'd say that in the first year after I first heard him, 80% of all music I listened to was Porcupine Tree or his solo stuff. 80 percent. Every day. For a year.
@@har9020 have met SW and seen him many times as well as PT since 2007, lucky me! I feel compelled to steer you in the direction of Riverside and Lunatic Soul which is the brainchild of Mariuz Duda a Polish musical genius who has recorded with SW on a track called The Old Peace which was in memory of Alec Wildey who was a behind the scenes member of SW and MD and wrote lyrics to the track, a beautiful song btw. You will thank me when you do, check out Wanderings and also Untamed from LS and Caterpillar and the barbed wire, and Conceiving you from Riverside all on YT for a tiny taste... Enjoy!
SW lives out his songs on stage. The long stare (without blinking) reflecting the state of mind of the real-life psycho killer depicted in this song IMHO.
I saw Steven Wilson a few weeks ago in Atlanta and took my wife, she is not a big rock and roll fan but after the concert she told me she was converted... Thank you Steven Wilson
You are one lucky man. I had tickets for the show in Asheville NC the night before and a snowstorm kept me from getting there. I was as mad as a hornet and disappointed beyond belief. Steven is, I think, from another part of the universe musically...The Porcupine Tree work is fantastic and his solo and project work is likewise phenomenal. My best regards to your wife. She married a smart man.
@@MaynardGKrebs-gv4vy I had something similar happen. I won four tickets to the Toronto show last fall through a draw I think I might have been the only entrant in, but the show got cancelled due to a water main break on the day of the concert, and I had prior commitments on the day it was rescheduled to.
Holzman... what an absolute beast! He's having a blast on this one! They're all such amazing talents, how could one 'not' have fun??? I just dig watching him get into this show... he doesn't hold back, even a little.
This song contains 2 fantastic solos: keys and guitar, within a red-hot arrangement. Great closing song for the Royal Albert Hall concerts. Wish I had been there...
[Verse 1] Great God, I don't believe in you But still I will do what you want me to Stand up and fight in the city streets This much I know you expect of me [Chorus 1] And the ones who are given it all The good looks, the wealth And the charm and the innocence They are all gonna fall But I will take it back [Verse 2] Pale God, I had a dream of you And how you respond when your ego's bruised They laugh and sneer 'cause they know you're weak But I'll make them pay with an IED [Chorus 2] And the ones who are given it all The good looks, the wealth And the charm and the innocence They are all gonna fall But I will take it back [Verse 3] Whining God, who the fuck are you? This song is so good live. This band is way too awesome. What a cool video. It's my favorite song right now. Saw them live at The Capitol Theater Port Chester NY this past year. It was easily the best show I've seen in a long time.
Actually my personal favorite song from 'To The Bone' Album and has some 'Talking Heads' feel in this song for me... Just performed Excellent live here on You Tube or when I saw Steven and his Band Live in person...
It’s difficult for me to think of a better produced live performance I’ve watched. I recently found this song listening to “To the Bone” album as a whole with Detonation near the end and love it.
In my view Steven is one of those rare modern prog artists that has what I call a 'prog' voice. greats from the 70's that also have it are obvious. Lake, Gabriel, Anderson, Ian Anderson, Wetton, Gilmour, and yes even Collins! Todays prog bands are great but lack that 70's sound from the lead singer. Steven has it, as well as being a genius! when I first got 'To the Bone' my next door neighbours soon confirmed they too liked this track! LOL
Well those people are not too bright. There are pop elements but it's not a pop album at all. It's just his most accessible solo album yet. Anyone who's a fan of his knows he is a big fan of pop music and has always had a great ear for big hooks.
@@bandzsa I've never had a problem with his playing. It's his kit that I dislike. Maybe it's just me but his snare is pretty muffled, his toms get lost in the mix. It just doesn't cut through like Gavin's or Marco's kits do.
@@jayanthavasarala I think this is deliberately so. I mean, Gavin was the most technically superb guy in PT, while on the one hand, this tour band is full of highly skilled musicians, on the other hand, Steven probably doesn't want the drums to be so much in front. And even with that, the drums are very much present, even if it is not the way it was with Gavin behind the kit. For one, I am very pleased with how the whole music sounds in these recordings.
@@bandzsa he IS good. But simply not at the same level of Gavin Harrison. This Is just easy to understand if you listen both of them. Groove and power are so different.

Why? Too dark? Then skip the whole CD... most of Steven's song have a dark side. I found the scary look of Steven a bit uncomfortable at first. But then I realized he's playing the character of the song here. The whole thing is confronting, but I love it.

Post-production on this, is really fucking awesome!

Steven Wilson mixes his albums
Agreed. The sound, lighting, camera and editing work are world class.
The man is a freak. Has awesome live presence and the band to match his every word. One of the great prog musos of all time.
2 of the best solos I've ever heard: KEYS at 6:57 and GUITAR at 8:21!
I agree!👍. Solid bass and drums at beginning till end👍😘🇸🇪
you really need to hear more guitar solos, start with the crap ones. They'll be better.

[Verse 1]
Great God, I don't believe in you
But still I will do what you want me to
Stand up and fight in the city streets
This much I know you expect of me
[Chorus 1]
And the ones who are given it all
The good looks, the wealth
And the charm and the innocence
They are all gonna fall
But I will take it back

Pale God, I had a dream of you
And how you respond when your ego's bruised
They laugh and sneer 'cause they know you're weak
But I'll make them pay with an IED
[Chorus 2]
And the ones who are given it all
The good looks, the wealth
And the charm and the innocence
They are all gonna fall
But I will take it back

Detonation for the greater good
Swim here, come and hear my heart
'Cause when the world breaks
You will feel the blast
