      Decades of Timex Marlins, for sure, but I'm having trouble sourcing any other Casio watch with a Marlin logo (or even a salmon for that matter). I believe an older Casio digital was nicknamed Marlin due to its water resistance, but the Marlin name is registered to Timex, and has been since the '60s, if not before. Still, the Duro is a great beater for folks with larger wrists. Gotta love Casio for value!

    • @trevorhofmann1562
      @trevorhofmann1562 3 года назад +4

      @@donnyboon2896 I think it has more to do with trademark infringement than anything else. I believe Timex owns the Marlin trademark, but was only using it minimally to maintain control. Now that it has successfully brought back the Marlin line, Casio's Duro (which is only nicknamed "Marlin") likely infringes on Timex' trademark. The two companies' lawyers probably had a behind the scenes discussion, ending with Casio deciding not to fight a trademark battle over a nickname. We'll probably never know what went on behind closed doors, but I find this is the most likely scenario. Either way, as much as I like its specs, design and price, the Duro is too big for my 6.5-inch wrists, so I will admire it from a distance (and enjoy my multiple SKXs, 2nd-gen Monster, and other comparatively smallish divers). Cheers

    Under $55 is amazing for this watch. You're getting Japanese movt., screw down crown, screw case back, date window, 200m water resistance, and a rotating bezel... I think it's hard to even complain about all that. With the money saved you can buy several decent straps and enjoy wearing something that you know didn't break the bank.

    The Casio Duro is the very best bang-4-the-buck dive & quintessential tool watch. It's truly an economical budget dive watch treasure. On every scuba adventure, this goes with us, (& has never failed) while the far more pricey mechanical dive watches stay safely at home away from corrosive, salty, deep sea water. Back when I bought it, the cost was only $30. Cheers to all on this T3 channel & Jory's favorite Snyder's pretzel pieces! 🍻🍺🍺👏⌚
    FYI: Duro = Durable/tough/hard. The marlin is used on most Casio analog dive watches with at least a 200m water resistance. Plus, around 80% of these have the second hand hitting the hash marks perfectly...all the way around.

  • @martintanz9098
    @martintanz9098 4 года назад +240

    Respectfully, Jory, I think you missed the point of this watch. It really isn't a watch guy watch. And yes, it is a basic watch and so the second hand doesn't perfectly line up with the indices (try that with more expensive quartz watches and I would bet most have the same problem). And the plastic strap isn't great, and it is kind of big.
    Think of it more as a starter watch for someone who already has a G shock or similar watch who is looking to dip a toe into the world of analog watches. Maybe this would be a gift for a high school kid, or a working man who wants to switch things up but can't see spending more than $100 on a watch. For those people, this is a phenomena value.

      BigBoi Ganiga right, however you have to judge it based off the purpose in which it was made. Car reviewers do not hold compact economy cars to the same standard as luxury cars. It’s about the features you get for the price you pay. The water resistance and screw down crown alone is worth $50 in my personal opinion. I really don’t care about second hands lining up exactly on a $50 watch. That being said, he was being consistent with all of his other reviews. He looks at all of this stuff no matter the price range. Still a great informative channel for watch enthusiasts.

      I'm sat here looking at this watch and honestly, this looks perfect for me as a beginner watch without pushing the boat out too far.
      I already have a Samsung Gear 3, but i feel like it's too fragile to wear to work and basically anywhere, other than when I'm at the gym and need to track my heartrate.
      I want something simple, durable and functional and this ticks most of those boxes for a decent price.
      As far as I'm concerned it's basically the same as an invictus of the same style, but without the price tag and gaudy branding - which i personally detest.

    • @thetimeteller
      @thetimeteller  4 года назад +34

      You actually proved my point with your passive aggressive responses:
      Primates could be monkeys, apes, or hominids. Orangs and Gorillas are both hominidae, *but* they are part of a different subfamilies (Ponginae and Homininae)
      Now Billfish can only be made up of two families: Istiophoridae and Xiphiidae- (only 2 families compared to the Primate’s 4 families, and NO sub-families)
      Not only that:
      Sailfish and Marlin both come from Istiophoridae, which denotes there being less of a difference between Sail fish and Marlin vs. Orangs and Gorillas.
      The more you know!

    200m WR "it must have a threaded crown" - yes, the Duro does but threaded crowns are not necessary for WR. They prevent accidental activation of the crown under water but the gaskets inside the stem are what prevent water intrusion. Fortis and others have watches without threaded crowns that exceed standards at 100-200m WR. There are articles online about this issue, because many erroneously assert that WR is somehow dependent on crowns being threaded.
    As for the crown binding - try taking waxed dental floss, wrapping it around the threads, and running it back and forth a few times. Often eliminates that binding on stems-crowns if there are not any burrs in the metal.

    Good review, thank you. I enjoy what you do. But IMHO you missed a point or two. (1) This watch is referred to by many as "the Duro" because it has earned a reputation for durability. Less rugged than a G-shock, it is still a good daily beater. (2) You also noted that it is a good-looking submariner homage for the price - but it did not occur to you that appropriately strapped it can also be worn for dress or the office without apology. I doubt the comparably priced G-shock you prefer would offer that kind of flexibility. Good accuracy, durability, looks, suitable as a beater or for business or dress, and excellent value make it the popular winner that it is. Timepieces that cost five times as much too often fail to deliver five times the value of this watch.

    My Duro is 4 or 5 years old, and it's typically my work watch. It's been around the block a few times, so to speak, and has held up beautifully. The hands, including the second hand, DO line up on mine. The crown is not noticeably rougher than my Seikos or Citizens. Maybe you got one that wasn't their best effort. Mine has been bumped around, but the crystal has not scratched, which surprised me on an inexpensive watch. True, the lume isn't the greatest, but since the hands and pip do glow longer, it's usually good enough to tell time in the dark.
    If Casio decided to make a solar version, I'd buy one in a second.

    If you happen to be a diver who likes analog watches (like me) this watch is a great value. The less I spend on gear, the more I can spend on dives. As for the lume comments, that the pip and hands match lume intensity is fantastic. If you are actually diving the watch at night, all you need to be able to see where the minute hand is in relation to the pip. Other watches, including a lot of the more expensive micro brands fail that test, as the pip is often the first thing to fade. Long live the Duro!

    “Duro” is short for “Durable “ . The Marlin is on the dial because Casio used to have a dive watch called the “Marlin” they discontinued and replaced with the Duro. They kept the Marlin on the face to let people know this was the replacement.
    When I got my Duro, I replaced the plastic strap for a NATO Bond strap and it is a very attractive looking watch now. Never liked the way those plastic straps looked or felt. All in all, I’m very satisfied with it!

It has survived slamming into metal ovens, iron pans, splashing hot oil, being steamed, being drenched in lemon juice and salad dressings, being shaken vigorously and being cleaned under warm water every end of the shift. Still it tells me accurately when the chicken breasts and steaks are ready and when to flip the fish on the grill for 5 years. I wouldnt do that to any more expensive watch.

    i've got one of these and the seconds hitting the markers was so spot on i spent $1100 to get casio's oceanus dive watch, which also has secs hand spot on. YOU may not have noticed (but i did) that by the middle to end of your review, after letting the secs hand break in a bit, it was hitting spot on around the dial...as mine still does after a year. similarly, the threads will screw in more smoothly over use. this is an outrageous watch not only for the price, but compared to even $1000 quartz watches where the secs don't ever hit markers right on (talking omegas, etc). casio does it right in that regard. do go back and check the secs hand around 'after 12' to 30 side of the dial, and later in the review you will notice it's hitting. i love the watch, not only does it look super compared even to a rolex sub (why it is an icon), but it's the best watch for money probably in existence. no, i don't work for casio. p.s....the 'duro' stands for 'durable'.

Tough, stainless steel case and band hold up to solvents well, just something that feels more “proper” than a g shock. My seconds hand lines up well, and crown is easy to unscrew, however the bezel binds up the last quarter turn for some reason. It’s not the sort of watch you sit and look at and enjoy, it’s just a watch. Put it on, go to work, and it tells you what time it is. I went from G shocks to this mainly because I work around solvents, painting cars, and G shocks do not hold up to solvents over the long term. Stainless steel is easy to clean up, and strap is replaceable.

Call it a beater or what you will, I think you get more than what you pay for with this watch, which doesn't pretend to be what it's not. Yes, it's kind of large, but anyone who has small wrists knows that they're buying (one hopes, anyway), and for someone like me, with somewhat larger wrists, it looks and feels fine. The Duro is basically my "travel" watch, in that it's a quite satisfactory watch that can be replaced if lost or damaged for a price that won't break my heart or wallet. Thanks for the video!

Then when putting on my wrist, it slipped out of my hand and fell from 3 feet high onto my padded carpet floor. I picked it up and put it on my wrist and went to work. A couple of hours later, and the watch was running 20 minutes slow. It never kept time again, so I took it to a jeweler. He opened it up and said, "Yep, you have broken the mainspring." He could tell it was from an impact. This clearly would not be covered under warranty. He quoted me the cost of replacing the movement at about the same cost I paid for the watch. No point. I lost a couple of hundred bucks in that moment. From 1 drop. My next purchase was a Casio Duro. No issues at all.

When BOTH appear on the same watch you've got a durable & tough dive watch that can withstand 200m of water pressure without water ingress. Plus, around 80% of these have the second hand hitting the hash marks perfectly...all the way around.

      I don't think the word Duro has anything to do with the Marlin. Marlin is another nickname used for the watch, because Marlin on the dial of course. Duro is Latin and Spanish for tough rugged and hard

      @Ray Han Yeah, could be. From what I know, if silicon oil is used it will damage the lume in time. But if Fluorinert is used I think you're safe. This is especially designed for cooling electronics by submersion. However, successfully modding a Duro or another inexpensive watct (The black MRW looks like a million bucks when oil filled) if the watch fails after a few years, I wouldn't be mad...

    I'm going back and watching a lot of the episodes. I think we have nearly polar oppoisite opinions on so many watches. You my friend like the higher end watches and can be a watch snob. For less than 50 bucks, this watch offer crazy value for the money. So the hands do not always line up to the seconds marks. Not a big deal. This model here was a favorite of so many family and friends. After picking this up I decided to pick this up and love it. I think we agree on two things. I'll probably replace the strap on the Duro as well and I do love my DW5600 G-Shock too. Go back to the higher end watches as that kinda suits you the best anyways.

    I own this watch, hardly ever wear it. I mostly wear it when performing yard work etc. Very honest review. It’s nice for a $50 watch. Doesn’t see the light of day from the confines of my watch box! 😮

    My girlfriend bought me this watch for my birthday and I’ve got to say it’s one of my favorites but I would love if Casio made this model but with an automatic movement and not a quartz movement but outside of that absolutely love this watch I would recommend this one for sure

    Costco Canada had them on sale and I bought one. Great bang for the buck. I used a q-tip and brushed on a bit of silicon lube on the crown threads. It is also the quietest quartz analog watch I have.

    If you were around 50 years old and your short sight starts giving up on you like me (:P) then... no matter how many great G-SHOCKS you own (and i do)... you'd still neeeeed an analog watch just like this one in order to SEE the time in bed at night without your glasses. And thats a great reason to have it. Analog is great for elder people for a reason. :)

    This is a great little watch and actually fantastic for the price ... let’s be honest: many many of the very pricey watches available are just overpriced status symbols ... they do not really give you good value for money but only the snob appeal of having that brand on your wrist.
