On the evening of 11 August 1986, a Westland Lynx helicopter flew a 15 kilometre course across the Somerset Levels, England. G-LYNX achieved an average speed of 400.87 kn/h (249.10 mph).
It became the world's fastest helicopter!
The Lynx helicopter which achieved the record, commonly referred to as ''G-LYNX''-its civil registration, had undergone a short modification programme to make it capable of high speeds, yet it retained the basic airframe, rotor & transmission system of the standard Lynx that was in military service worldwide.
To this day the helicopter World Speed Record remains unbroken!
This short film explains the remarkable period that led to the record attempt, speaking to those people that helped to make it happen.
This short film is presented, and narrated by the late Paddy Ashdown MP.

Sikorsky and Eurocopter will try to say we beat it, but it's just not true, this is a true helicopter, the Eurocopter is not, and the Sikorsky has never ever tried for the record, not sure if it is even a true helicopter, this is still the fastest.

The lynx did set the speed record.....BUT it was modified and standard production models could not achieve the same speeds.....Also this record has been beat by Sikorsky X2, Sikorsky Raider, Eurocopter X3

GLYNX did have some modifications, but in essence it was a production helicopter. The main advantage GLYNX had was the use of the revolutionary BERP rotor blades.
GLYNX still holds the world air speed record for a 'true' helicopter! Hybrids not allowed.... :]

the Eurocopter X3 cant beat this record because it not a standard helicopter and the Sikorsky X2 sits in a grey zone and even if it where consider standard helicopter they never even tried for the official record so the GLYNX is still unbeaten.
