@@jewishjedi It seems so counter-intuitive to start with the upstroke. He's really onto something because no one sounds like him especially when he does that shit like in Idiots Are Taking Over.
I think he sometimes gets Matt Freeman from Rancid to play his parts on the records (I think he mentioned this in some interview), but nevertheless Fat Mike rules!!
After some banter and laughs and photos upon a chance meeting one day in Leeds 2015, I am so glad and will forever be, that as they walked away, I jogged up after them, called Mike and said Mike you are so appreciated, always remember that and don’t ever give up! He gave me THE most sincerest thank you. 🥰
2:29 of Fat Mike expressively deciding when to jump back in on that fretboard is on par with jumping onto a speeding train from a horse. This man is a veritable bass legend! As a bass player myself, I have taken his advice in using 0.60 Dunlop picks for my playing and I’ll forever stand by it. It just gives you a more fluid feel when dancing on the strings. Love this man dearly!!
I like to think that look is saying "yeah, it's fucking simple and boring, and I can drink beer in the middle of a song. Do you think that's a coincidence?"
Great job Fatty. Always appreciate these intimate videos where you give your loyal fans some face time and show off your mad bass skills. Keep up the great work bro-ham and cheese
When I was a youngster learning how to play and listening to NOFX, I never knew bass could be played that way. Fat Mike deserves way more credit as a bassist, he's fuckin great!
I'm a bass player 25+ years and grew up listening to 90s punk and even though now I progress to progressive metal I hold Mike to be one of my favorite and most brilliant bassist. The dude plays outside the box and I respect that.
Epic mike, just proves you are one of the best base players in the world. Your style I have followed since I was 7 and I am 34 now keep going Mike you are a legend
Thanks Mike. You’re looking great and sounding great and I really appreciate how much content you guys are putting out in these times. I know you’re all “working” hard and your fans are stoked. The world is going to hell in a hand basket but the soundtrack still rocks!
I feel bad I didn't listen to these guys in the 90s. He has a great style that is all his own...all the chords and clever stuff he throws in. He's underrated as a bassist. His name should come up in conversations about different styles
Mike’s playing is pretty unique. Love the straight forward verses. Something so loveably punky about grinding on the high notes. You just don’t hear it as much these days, especially modern pop punk.
Haven't played punk in a long time, but even now Mike & Rob Pope from the Get Up Kids/Spoon are the two players I come back to the most when writing parts.
Thanks for sharing Mike! From one less successful bass player to a successful one... I hope you stay sober. I picked up my bass just to learn that cool riff.
Thanks for that Fatty...I too am a punk bassist/singer heavily inspired by nofx for quite some time. I'm digging seeing you do this kind of stuff more now. Long overdue keep listening to your publicist haha
Some but probably not all key great things about this video…. 1- The way Mike matches his pitch and cadence perfectly to his self Introduction pitch and cadence used in his Dunlop pic commercial from Fat Mike’s, Fat Mike. 2- The immediate, smile on the dial when he first started playing, I just love it when someone loves what they does! 3- The song selection is completely dope! I love the evolution of the members of this band, in particular Melvin. How’d we go from, some tell me i can’t sing, from theme from a NOFX album, to now singing complete studio tracks or sharing track vocals and even taking on singing old songs, previously sung on studio albums by Mike like ‘stickin in my eye’ at the live shows for example? Kicks ass. 4- Well funny Liquid death product placement, looking after the friends that look after you! Classy, cute and fun. 5- Seeing an artist that I adore. 6- Them leather pants.. 7- Closing out with that Jim Dunlop pic plug to round it all up nicely. Gonna go give coaster another spin, love blasphemy…. Cheers Mike.
This is great to see mike coherent, still funny and explaining his bass techniques after all these years 😊👍👏 I have seen a couple of these now and was like oh!, that's how he plays it!? Haha. Always cool to see how someone else plays 😎
One of my influences, he is one of the reasons I picked up a bass guitar. Great to see him sober and really talking shop, showing off his chops and some technique tutorials as well. Much more interesting than him rambling on about BDSM and blow. Keep em coming Mike!!!
That was so bitchin!! Fuck, I have to slow it down to learn what you did there lol! I'm just a drummer of over 40 years, and recently started playing bass again, but I'm not sure if I can teach myself this one unless I slow it down lol! One of the most underrated and best bassists/song writers in punk rock. I'm using a Dunlop .60 pick and up/down stroking so much better now after observing you play. Thank you Mike! The new material rips!
It’s good to see Fat Mike sober and doing more online stuff
So you’re saying it’s good to see him online instead of on lines
Yeah...sober...as he swigs a big drink of liquid death.

@@cacadordorio liquid death is sparkling water in a can
I've been waiting 25 years for Mike to start explaining his technique that no one can duplicate.
Same
It looks so weird because he starts with upstrokes instead of downstroks
He talks about laying his pinkie on the bass in the Drinks with Johnny podcast. It's real easy to see it here in this video.

Banjo picking!

Its funny how. Nothing seems much fun anymore to me now that Mike quit to drink.
He literally drinks a beer while playing this song. It's an improvement though.

Just got myself a streaming service, and have been revisiting lots of skate punk from the '90s and 2000s. NOFX still my favourite!
I love the look of that bass. As a bass player, this is one of my top 10 Nofx songs.
Wow, something actually worth watching on RUclips. Thanks Mike!
