Because it was pretty much the end of the Swedish Empire. Today we are kind of the laughing stock of the world, but back then we were feared and respected.
Nobody knows, Billy, because it was war. The fog of war covers a lot of things, even here in the US. Same reason that no one knows who fired "The Shot heard 'round the world" at Lexington.
P.S. He's known to history as Charles XII, Carolus is just his Latin name.
CARL XII, the anglo world calls him charles. i have always hated the changing of the kings' names.

@@lionfromthenorth4580 Well respected as well, both by his men and by his enemies. He was with the men and dug the trenches, cleaned muskets and rapiers. He took a lot of the heavier duties for himself, and thus earned the respect of his own men. Many leaders weren't respected by their own men. But Carl was very well respected.
Karl the 12th was shot in the temple in Norway 1718 at 36 years old. He had been crowned king at 15 and fought of most of northern Europe for the past 21 years of his reign. Some claim the shot was fired by an enemy sharpshooter, others that it was an assasination from within his own ranks.
Yeah the sharpshooter theory is way off. No rifle at that time could hit that target at that range.
@@peo4989 Well it wasnt necessarly fired from that long a range and he was at the very front. There is also a theory that it could have been grapeshot but as the song says we will never know for sure.

@@erlandvonhofsten3970 he was approx 125-150 metres from the fort and any enemy watchman would need to dustinguish the king at thst distance. Then fire accurately the rifles at that time were not even accurate 90 metres away

BTW as a Swede i can say this. Karl XII had enemies that had taken control in the capital when the king was forced to retreat to Turkey after invasion of Russia and after battle of Poltava. The ruling council in Sweden saw it troublesome to continue the war because Russian warships encroached on Swedens trade routes and shores. Even though Swedish and sometimes british/dutch navies helped. When the cat is away the rats rules and dance the table is the saying and that what happened in Swedish politics. Despite Karl XII instituted great tax reforms which we use to this day etc and made farmers excempt from taxes for their contributions to the state etc. The rich and powerful had dealings with Russians. When king Karl XII returned to Sweden and raised an army to achieve a better peace settlement by removing danish influence over scandinavian neighbour Norway Karl XII recieved several messengers from Stockholm. Most likely one of these emissaries fired a pistol at the king on his routine observings of the danish fort. This happened in the dark so its IMPOSSIBLE for an enemy watchman to take aim and fire that accurately when king Charles observed from the trenches. The weird thing is the "bullet" that was used to kill the king was made out of a meltdown button from a soldiers uniform. The saying said over the course of the war that king Charles XII was "too hard to shoot" because he had been in the front of many battles leading the cavalry on scouting and in charges and had recieved alot of bullet shots but none had pierced his skin except from a bullet he took to the foot prior the one only battle he ever lost POLTAVA. So bear with me....Basically an assassin would take the legend for true and meltdown a soldiers button and use it to kill the king CLOSE UP.
He was killed at night during a siege, if I remember correctly he was observing the area when musket ball hit him through the temple.
Militarily he was actually really skilled and at that time the Swedish army was one of the best in the world seeing a lot of success in the Great Northern War.
Carolus was a people's person in the army. He slept in the barracks, he patrolled camps, stood guard in watch towers.
During a siege, he was there in the trenches. And it scared the hell out of his officers, his final words were "don't be afraid" and as he looked over the trench a musket ball flew through his head.
Was he shot by an enemy sharpshooter or by someone in his own army either by accident or on purpose to end the war? They haven't been able to find hard evidence, and they've apparently dug him up three times to examine his skull with the most recent being in 1917.
We still don't know.
Great reaction. Thanks. The Carolus Rex album deals with the wars in northern Europe during 16-1700 and is a fantastic piece of historic musical story telling. I love every note on this album. Its so well made.

Sabaton is a Swedish Power Metal band from Falun, which was formed in 1999. The band's songs are inspired by various historical wars. Even the band name is military inspired, as Sabaton is also the name of the part of the armor that covers the foot.
As you can see above, Sabaton make music ONLY about historical wars and nothing else as you mentioned about these mass shootings, Covid-19 and other things, you've got the back foot that they sing about everything that happened historically, but only about war, that's therefore their stage clothes consist of camouflage pants.

I would say Lifetime of war is one of the most moving and impactful songs on the album.

Well, they don't know who killed Carolus/Carl the XII, it's speculated that one of his own soldiers killed him or it could have been one of the enemy. All they know he was killed at night while besieging the fortress Halden.

New evidence that came out just this year points to it being a bullet shot from the norwegian side. Meaning he wasnt killed by his own. So good timing on this one!
Hey Billy, I think you should really do a video on Sabaton's song Union. It's a personal favorite of mine even if it is one of their lesser known and less popular songs. The song is very triumphant and is about the allied nations bringing an end to the battle of Monte Cassino during the Italian Campaign of World War 2, which I personally think is cool cuz I like learning about history and the Italian Theater dosen't get much attention.
Carl XII of Sweden was shot in the head during the Siege of Fredrikshald in Halden, Norway, in 1718. He was one of the best military masterminds through history, up there with, if not surpassing, Napoleon Bonaparte, Alexander the Great, Genghis Kahn, The Lion From the North (Gustaf II Adolf/Gustavus Adolphus. aka the inventor of modern warfare), Arthur Wellesley, etc.
It began with Poland-Lithuania invading from the south into Livonia and laying siege to Riga. The Poles had 14 000 men but the Swedes counterattacked and the Poles were shattered and their general laid dead. They were now in full retreat back across the border.
Then the Danes attacked. Carl XII raised money from all across the empire to fund the military and personally lead (at 17 years old) an army to conquer Denmark. He made Denmark capitulate in 1 single month, doing what no other Swedish king before him has been able to do, so quickly.
In November 1700 (Carl is now 18 years old) Tsar Peter I decided that it was a good idea to invade Swedish Estonia and try to take Narva. Narva had a garrison of 1800 men and only a few artillery pieces. The Russians numbered 40 000 men, entrenched, with multiple artillery pieces. Carl XII had just lead a beach landing against the Poles and Saxons and marched 150 miles just to face the Russians at Narva. Carl was outnumbered 4:1. 18 000 Russians were slaughtered on the battlefield or drowned in the river due to the bridge collapsing. But being outnumbered was going to be sort of a common scene in the war for the Swedes as most battles they were outnumbered at least 2:1 but still didn't lose a single major battle until 1709 at Poltava where 20 000 sick, exhausted, sleep deprived and starved Swedish soldiers met the Russian elite, numbering 40 000. But even so, at the beginning of the battle and into the middle stages it actually looked like the Swedes might win the battle. The Russians were retreating in panic but rallied by the tsar himself. It ended with 18 000 dead Swedes and a king that got shit in the foot. Had the leadership of the Swedish forces not been conflicted (since the king was injured with a musket ball in his foot and rule was left to the two generals Carl Gustaf Rehnskiöld and Adam Ludwig Lewenhaupt who didn't agree on what to do) the Swedes would have a considerably high chance of winning or being able to fall back and regroup to live to fight another day.

The newest and most certain theory is that the sweedish king got killed by a cannistershot, fired from the norwegian side. They had a examination of his remains few years ago, to find out if the diametre of the bullet hole in the skull matched the swedish or norwegian rifle calibre. It' was neither.

The tragedy of Carlous Rex's death reminds me a LOT of Robb Stark from Game of Thrones to the point I'm almost certain George RR. Martin based Robb off the Swedish king. Both were young when they took the crown, both were excellent military commanders and good men but unfortunately not very good kings and both died young, Robb definitely betrayed by his men and Carlous likely also suffered the same fate.

If you mean a song that was released more recently, then no, Panzer Battalion was released several years prior. If you mean a more recent event in history, then yes. Though I think the albums after Metalizer are better.
Billy, please react to Sabaton- Lifetime of wae. it's so impactful and while it's about the aftermath of the thirty years war, the message still holds true to today. the Swedish version is even more impactful, this is a song i think you'll appreciate even more because you're a veteran.

He was 100% killed by one of his own. If you read about it and the "coup" that happened after and how a new king from a new line got to power after they forced his sister to abducate and the new king gave the nobels more power because of his death etc. A man also confessed to killing him, he shouted it from his window out to the streets because he couldnt bare the guilt, but then the nobels with new found power said he was sick and delerious. Also, the bullet goes from temple to temple, someone put a gun to his head and shot. The fortress was on a hill looking down the trenches, for the bullet to go temple throught temple the king m ust have had his head in a REALLY weird position. You can also look up photos from his skull, the exit wound is on the wrong side.
AND a person told a priest he had the "bullet" that killed the king but it was not a bullet, it was a copper button from one of the swedes uniforms. The priest told him to throw it away and never speak of it again. They also couldnt find any traces of lead in the kings skull. To many coincidences imo.

Came out before ISIS was the threat it turned into. So more for Al Qaeda or the Taliban, though the Taliban were known to only operate in their home country.
