"Because I'm in pain. You are my father and you do not love me". A child cries in the night for their father but the tears turn dry by day because he's no where in sight. The sheer brutality of man kind has made us all some what ill in our minds.

The true tragedy was that Sado himself was not a good father. Sado, in feat of hysterics, even killed a concubibe, the mother of his infant son, and stabbed and threw the poor baby to the pond, to the king's fury. We can say the boy's later life was more miserable than that of Sado.
Sado had 4 sons from 3 women - the eldest from the crown princess, the others from 2 palace maids whom the strict king reluctantly elevated to official concubines. And there were other palace maids Sado slept with, but they couldn't get any title because they didn't get pregnant. Sado failed to care for all these women, including the crown princess, because he was afraid of his father would be angry again for his womanising and not studying hard enough.

This is one story that’s stuck with me over the years. It’s so tragic all around. His mental illness was caused and exacerbated by abuse and emotional neglect. I think he would’ve been much better off not as a crown prince. It sounds like he was also neurodivergent as well, which is also linked to having a higher likelihood of suffering from depression and anxiety...which, when severe and left untreated, can turn into psychosis...explaining his increasingly violent outbursts and strange beliefs and behaviors. I refuse to excuse the fact he should’ve been held accountable for his actions (cause rape and murder are heinous and their lives mattered too), but I wish they would’ve had the tools and understanding that we have today. I wonder how his life would’ve been if he had received proper treatment and been allowed to live his life freely.

    • @Faboostic
      @Faboostic 2 года назад +22

The worse part is that we don't even know if he was actually guilty? Like the first thing i thought was how it could have been his father who was clearly abusing him. I'm not sure if he was neurodivergent, all the "strange behaviors" are seen just "normal" if you're a to-be king being abused, like it can all be explained i bet if he's clothes weren't right he would get beaten, and he would very likely get beaten a lot a lot if it rained, since back then the people believed rains and storms were a sign that the gods were unhappy, so the royalty would go to the temple to pray all while the storms didn't stop and it could be a cause for a royal to fall off power, so that might have been some kind of traumatic flashbacks that led to hallucination, also really suspicious how he "got sick" than moved in with his wife and started studying more? That could have been because just royalty trying to hide something or just him getting sick because of some heavy emotional trauma. Really, he's father could have killed him in so many ways but he choose such a cruel way? In a rice chest, in the middle of the sun without water and food, bet the kid was also clausthrophobic, that sounds like a nightmare to me. Idk, the king sounds like A+ predator to me.

The father loved the son in his own way. They both were sons of lowly palace maids, not of queen consorts. Especially the father was the son of a servant of palace maids. So the father was the lowest born of all Korean royals, and had to survive the huge pressure to prove himself, and he wanted the same hard will from his son. Back then, all government officials were sons of wives of the upper class, not of cobcubines.

Sado was an inadquate heir to his father's eye, but the "raping women" part had some different meanings then.
Sado never slept with other guys' wives nor concubines nor widows. The first case would have been a real crime then, and the second and the third case would have made a scandal. People back then let their relationships matched by their parents. And every commoner in the whole country would have welcomed (secretly) the prospect of their daughters being his concubines, or even being his one-time girls

I understand what kind of points , you coming from, but even that times, what king yeongjo did consider as child abuse .
King Yeongjo started with such a trivial thing when he reprimanded the crown prince, and when he asked about the trivial thing, he was furious that he couldn't make a decision on his own, and if he didn't, he was angry that he did whatever he wanted. Therefore, the crown prince, who was already afraid of his father, had no choice but to tremble while looking at his father's face. King Sukjong, the father of King Yeongjo, was famous for being hot-tempered, but he was embarrassed when his servants pointed out, "It's not something to say so," admitting that King Gyeongjong was angry about Seungji, who deliberately entered the school an hour late during his son's cleaning. Furthermore, King Yeongjo suddenly called him out even when there was no problem between his subjects and Crown Prince Sado, and even insulted his servant who stopped him with anger, so he didn't even care about the caution in the military relationship when he was entangled.
In the meantime, he abused the crown prince by saying that he would take the throne to raise his authority, so that the crown prince shed tears and was carried away by the courtiers. Even though royal officials protested, "Why do you bully a good crown prince?" King Yeongjo was rather angry at them. In particular, among the bureaucrats who defended the crown prince, there were many ministers who opposed the crown prince and political opponents. This is proof that King Yeongjo's abuse and arbitrary decision had a greater impact on the death of Crown Prince Sado than partisan strife. In the first place, when King Yeongjo had time to be Crown Prince Sado,
The scene of shouting and criticizing and abusing with trivial things was seen as very negative to individual servants beyond partisans and tendencies. No matter how strict parents were with their children in that era, they were only strict when their children did something wrong or did something foolish. Moreover, King Yeongjo's behavior was unacceptable as a parent raising a child, even from the perspective of his followers, as a king of a country mistreated his own crown prince

Actually, it wasn't the death of his biological mother that pushed him over the edge. His mother, a former court lady turned concubine known as Lady Yi Yeong-bin, outlived him by 2 years and it is said that she is the one who encouraged Yeongjo to do something with Sado, fearing for the life of her daughter (Princess Hwawan) and grandchildren (Yi San, the future Jeongjo, wasn't Sado's only child, there were 6 more children-3 daughters & 3 sons), because he already beat to death one of his concubines, in 1761.
His mental state started deteriorating faster after his protectress, Princess Hwapyeong died in 1748, but what made it worse was the death of Princess Hwahyeop, his most beloved sister, who died 1752.
And what finally pushed him over the edge were the consecutive deaths (within a month of each other) of his adoptive mother, Queen Jeongseong (Yeongjo's primary wife and Sado's adoptive mother) and of his grandmother, Queen Inwon (the adoptive mother of Yeongjo, who was the biological son of a lowly palace maid that became a high-ranking concubine, Lady Choe Suk-bin), both of whom were very close to Sado and always defended him in front of his father.

It seems in every royal family all over the world.. being a royal not happy.
Being forced to study all day, being forced to marry, constant power struggle, death threats..
Its either you turn mad or you die.
Sado was written to have bipolar illness.
The king at that time also had dementia in his later years..
There a movie called, "The Throne" about their lives and its depicts both pov's wonderfully.
You have the king who finally had a son in his late 40s. As a first time parent, he didn't realize his love for the prince would be a burden. Realizing his son was a genius, he made him start studying at a young age.
He also appointed him as a crown prince when he was a child.
The crown prince was burdened by his position and wanted to escape. He just wanted to be normal, and thats why they spread rumors....
Also during this time, the goverment had so many traitors. Its exactly why the crown princes, son (yisan), also had assasination attempts on him throughout his life.
They, the noron/soron, wanted a puppet king.
You can't completely blame everything on the king because he actually lived an extremely hard life as well.. getting accused of murdering his brother. He knows are cruel the palace is.. and therefore was tough on his only son Sado. Eventually it caused misunderstading and eventually the 2 turn on each other.
Its said in history that, no one thought Sado would die so quickly inside the box... (dehydration).
He reinstates his son as a crown prince, and gave him the same Sado = sad regrets
Either way.. the old king was still overall a great one.
The king was a man who loved his people. Even when he was nearing death, he went his private resident outside of the palace to die amongst his people. (His mother was a commoner). This love for the common people was taught to Yisan (Sados son).

I just finished The Red Sleeve and now I'm immersed in learning everything I can about Sado.
I've read a lot of the comments, and some of them have been very informative. Many have contained at least empathy for Sado's abusive childhood and probable mental illness, while still rightly judging him for his adult crimes.
What I haven't seen in the comments is more curiosity about what kind of illness he could have had in 1746 (age 10 or 11) that would lead to episodes of lost consciousness and changed personality.
I am frustratingly curious about this!
I have to wonder if he perhaps suffered from a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and because they didn't have that kind of medical knowledge, they just called it an "illness". Perhaps the abusive father harmed him, or an accident from Sado's martial arts or horseback riding activities. He also could have hit his head during an epileptic seizure (lost consciousness?).
Sado's initial personality change (from bad student to more studious) was apparently a large enough change to make note of historically. But his increasingly eccentric, and eventually downright dangerous changes seems clinically progressive to me. People don't usually develop a stutter in their 20s.

This prince had never been properly loved from the very childhood. Was not taught the fact and morals of life and death from an early age. hence he craved love and attention unconsciously but dealt with things negatively just like his own father. He could not accept the loss of his dear ones. The father was to be blamed here.

The tragedy of being the king is the feeling of being all knowing and powerful as if interest in arts and martial arts could never make their heirs good kings. If Sado's existence was true, a king like him with disposition coming from reality, would have established a strong Jeoson against Chinese empires. The closed minded Yeongjo deprived his son the life he must had lived as a child; his low understanding of holding power by confucian classics expertise caused the crown prince of loosing his sanity.

Way to many kings and queens in the world have ruined their own children's life by giving them what they need when it comes to materiell things and hight education, but almost next to nothing when it comes to feeling safe and loved. They grow up lacking empathy for other, but if their parent are also extremly dominant and agressive, you can be sure that at least one of their children will end as mentally ill. We have (Sweden) Gustav Vasa's sons for an example...

Sado had a weak character because he could not rise above all those emotional abuse by his own father. If he had a dominant and strong personality, he wouldn't go imbalanced and went insane.
Sado's father had so much high expectations of him that he rebuked him of his offences. He could just strip of sado's title of being the "heir to the throne" and should have given the title to a worthy one among the other princes. That way, sado would be spared from the supposed "heavy responsibility"of being the heir apparent to the throne.he could live as he wished. he was very weak mentally and emotionally and he was not fit to rule the kingdom at all

It is very true that his father may have attributed to problems. But in the end he was a adult and knew right from wrong. Sometimes a person does so many evil things consciously that he finally gets so hard hearted he doesn't care or even think he is doing wrong. Then the Devil has complete control of the person. Sad, but you can't just let someone get away with doing all that. No respect for his wife. She was in a textbook abusive relationship and it was just a matter of him until he killed her. But like alot of women in relationships like that, they can't see past the person they thought they knee and see the actual person because "he really does love me", "he loves me he just had a bad day" or in her case "he loves me, he just has personal problems". I hope anyone in a relationship like that, gets out while they still can. It is scary, but you need and have to do it.

@skaiu I personally know traumatic early childhood. I was adopted from a extremely abusive and neglectful home. At age 4 I was diagnosed with battlefield grade PTSD. Very rare diagnosis back then out of the forces. So I know what that is like.
That NEVER EVER gives the excuse for what he did. If and or but.
That is one of the problems now days. People to use their problems as a excuse for whatever. Like the mentally ill plea in trials. That was made for people who where Autistic and stuff like that. Now everyone is misusing it.
Of course someone who does a mass murder isn't "normal", but that doesn't mean they are crazy. Just plain mean and evil.
But yes, Abused children do need alot of love and support. But in the end you are who you decide to be. Sad but true.

There was a prince who had a baby with his maid at 10 years old. 😅. His maid was much older than him .
In the Joseon royal family, they married the princes and princesses at the age of 7-14. Usually around 10. They received their own palace when they married. Their spouses were about the similar age. They actually consummated (started to sleep together) when they got older, 14-16.
Outside of the royal family, most people married at 14-18. 16 was the prime age. Marrying after 20 was considered very late, and not being married after 24 was illegal. -- nowadays Koreans marry in their late 30s…. What a difference 😂

What strikes me in the tragic story of Prince Sado, and all the events within the Korean royal court at the time, are the similitudes, by many aspects, with the tumultuous and very dramatic facts related to the reigns of the Ottoman Sultans in Turkey. Conspiracy, treason, madness, cruelty, siblings rivalry, jealousy , crimes, it all evolves around a throne, the power : who gets it and more importantly, who manages to keep it, very often by all means including murder and by
eliminating any potential rival. P.S. I have just finished watching the very exceptional series :
Magnificent Century : Kösem, about the life of a Sultana at the Ottoman court during the
17th century and I have found it fascinating. I recommend it to anyone interested in history,
great actors, costumes, etc ... dramatic and very addictive !!!!

King Yeongjo was his father's ( King Sukjong ) most favored son, it's said ministers were always against sukjong for favoring a concubine's son who has slave blood. But Sukjong had completely ignored ministers. King Yeongjo mother was a low class slave who rose upto the highest level of concubine. Sukjong named her Suk which means pure n she is known as a peaceful person. It's obvious King Sukjong has favored Suk Bin and her son so much cuz if not, how a low born slave survive like this in a palace ?? Then comes queen Inwon, Sukjong's 3rd queen consort who is also known as King Yeongjo adoptive mother. That time Norons werw supporting Hee bin's son while Sorons supported Suk Bin's son. Inwon was originally from Noron but she changed her political side to Soron just to make Suk Bin's son more powerful. ( Yeongjo) When Sukjong giving throne to Hee Bin's son he has even asked his son to name Suk Bin's son as crown prince.
King Yeongjo is a person who received all the love from his parents King Sukjong n Suk Bin even from his stepmother queen inhyeon n his adoptive mother queen Inwon. Why couldn't he love his own son tho????😢😢😢😢
