      Coleton Donaldson tbh at this point, saying “I hate anime” is pretty much a meme. Save for a few people, almost everyone says it as a joke, though sometimes it can be hard to tell who is being sarcastic and who isn’t.
      You made a great point in defending anime, and I do agree with you. Anime as an art can be amazing, but as I’ve said in my first paragraph, you kind of missed the point of the joke. And I can’t believe I’m saying this, but...

    A good historical comparison is Japan and China in the late-1800s. Both countries were "locked", both had their doors kicked open by the Western Powers, both were forced with unequal treaties, both adopted reforms to try to "catch up"...
    But Japan went on to become an Asian Power equal to the West, and China ended up as "the Sick Man of the East" (and pretty much remained messed up af until the 1990s).
    I'm Chinese myself and this period of history always fascinates me.

      The 51st Division I wonder why the Qing government thought it could somehow stave off the monumental changes in every conceivable aspect happening around the world and in europe in perticular? I have read accounts that even after seeing a live artillery demonstration the imperial court shrugged it off like the artillery was just a toy. I also think that the meiji restoration was like a proxy war between Britain and France. It is still weird why the Chinese and Japanese acted so differently.

      @The51stDivision 7 лет назад +83

      Well, China DID attempt to reform. You can look up the Self-Strengthening Movement, China's version of the Meiji Restoration. In fact, by the First Sino Japanese War in 1894 the Imperial Chinese Navy was technologically superior to the Japanese... but still lost the war. There were LOTS of different factors involved.
      The more you delve into it the more complicated this shit gets.

      I just think that when China started radical reforms in 1903 it was already too late. If they had acted earlier there wouldn't have been a revolution and probably leave the empreror in power but more Meiji like. If this happened there probably wouldn't even be the CPC in power today.

    What is always overlooked about Japan becoming a modern nation in a short period of time due to the Meiji Restoration is the spread of Japan's urbanization and education in the Edo period. Even before Matthew Perry arrived, Edo, which is now Tokyo, was the largest city in the world and had the world's highest literacy rate due to the spread of private cram schools called terakoya. The legible public carried out various cultural activities, and the mass consumer society flourished. Each domain controlled by a feudal lord tried to promote local specialties and competed with each other, and handicraft industry developed at the highest level. Under such circumstances, modern political systems and the machinery industry were imported from the West, and Japan succeeded in modernization at once.

    Samurai were not completely removed. The Satcho alliance formed the backbone of the imperial military. The Choshu formed the heart and foundation of the Imperial Japanese Army, while the Satsuma formed the core of the Imperial Japanese Navy. These two clans were historical rivals for a thousand years, which made the Satcho alliance so unlikely and unthinkable before it happened. That rivalry continued for the entire imperial period, and significantly hampered prewar preparation and settling on doctrine before WWII. This led to a disjointed military that struggled to cooperate and held very different ideas for the future of japan.

    In addition to the world's highest literacy and urbanization rates, Japan's rapid modernization is believed to have been achieved because of its redundant social systems compared to other Asian countries. The redundancy is the domain system and the existence of the emperor. Because of the domain system, there was a stronger decentralization system than other Asian countries, and there were many capable samurai under each local lord. Even after the collapse of the Tokugawa Shogunate, which was the central government, they were able to lead the modernization of the Meiji period using the emperor, who had no real power but only authority.

Third, a Swedish guy in Quora said, that, he had some Muslim friends of immigrant background who lived in the worst areas and, that, they and their families didn't like the situation caused by ohter Muslim immigrants there and wanted action to end it, they even wanted it more than native Swedes because it was tarnishing the reputation of the whole Muslim immigrant community. It's truly amazing how far the Imperial Dynasty has come. Emperor Hirohito ruled during the 2nd World War and saw his country go from ruin to a Constitution and later to an Economic Power before his death in the 80s. His son Akihito continued the trend, evolving Japan into one of three Asain Super powers that today projects itself on the world stage.
    Going forward with Naruhito on the Chrysanthemum Throne, who knows how far Japan can go.

      The finns would even massacre soviet units and multilate the corpses. They'd leave the weapons and supplies though. This was to spread tales throughout the soviet forces of a beast that lurked in the forests that couldn't be killed and that was preying on soviet troops

    "Creating for the first time a centualized Japan" I have to disagree, What about the Emperors of the Nara and Heian Period? They certainly tried to rule Japan as centralized autocrats based on the Tang and Silla model.
    And I have to add, Meiji's Japan was by no means ruled directly under the Emperor, but rather, it was ruled by an oligarchical cabinet that had the young Emperor as a figurehead on top. A voice to carry out the small cabinet's wishes.

      I mean, whether it was a crime or not is irrelevant. I think most people are curious about the internal politics of the kingdom and how its precarious position made it a target for literally every large power in the Pacific.

      Fun fact: the kingdom of Hawaii sought help from the Japanese empire to avoid being annexed by the US. They thought an Asian empire would be more friendly than a Western power.

    • @noticedruid4985
      @noticedruid4985 4 года назад

      Another fun fact the Hawaiian Kingdom was overthrown by its own people. And secondly the reason why was the people were angry was that the last ruler of Hawaii Gueen Lili'uokalani wanted to be absorbed by Great Britain. Hence why Hawaii's flag has the union jack on it to this day.

    Part of the reason for the success of the Meiji Re-something was the devastation of China by the Taiping rebellion. The rebellion wrecked the Chinese silk industry, effectively giving Japan a monopoly on silk production. This monopoly financed much of the industrial projects.

    Iemochi became the Shogun in August 1858
    The Perry expedition happened in 1853 and 1854, before Iemochi became a shogun. So Iemochi wasn't the one who signed the treaties. Hell, he was like 6 years old when Perry showed up

    There was a little bit more to explore on the Japanese military and their impact on Japanese society in the early 1900s. Because of the Meiji restoration which was built on clan and daimyo alliances the defeated were expelled from power, and the supporters naturally gained position but this led to allies vying for power in the new government along clan lines.
    On one side there were supporters for doctrine of Japanese spirit vs technology advancement. Japanese observers from the technology side had gone to the WW1 trench battlefields and knew the outcome of morale vs machine guns.
    The spirit faction ousted the technology faction in the 1930s which led to more emphasis of Japanese spirit during soldier and officer training. The direct impact would be the costly banzai charges. Had the technology side won they would have used less confrontational tactics.

    1:44
    Incorrect:
    This is the actual order:
    1. Shogun
    2. Daimyo
    3. Samurai
    4. Artisan
    5. Merchant
    6. Farmer/Peasant
    The peasant/farmer was regarded as the lowest class, but often interchangeable with the merchant. Either way, they were both at the bottom. The only reason the merchant was regarded higher was through trade and wealth. However, socially, they were treated no differently than a peasant, and Samurai had impunity to kill peasants/merchants. Artisans such as Swordsmiths and Architects were more protected. Although priests are considered artisans, they werent offered the protection, thus they protected themselves, creating warrior monk societies which were the bane of Iyeyasu Tokugawa, and Hideyoshi.

    • @jacobbrennan442
      @jacobbrennan442 6 лет назад +9

      Actually he is completely right, farmers were right below the samurai, and merchants were at the very bottom.

    • @Longardia
      @Longardia 6 лет назад +8

      Merchants originally were at the bottom. This was more or less for ideological reasons because merchants did not actually create anything. They climbed the ladder after Sengoku Jidai when being a merchant was more profitable.

    • @ztp013

      Omega Rasetsu where ever you read that, don't trust that source anymore. If its a book, throw it, nothing is more dangerous to the mind than an inaccurate book.
      Here's the reasoning for the classes
      Shogun = coz duh!
      Daimyo = lesser lords
      Samurai = coz martial society
      Farmers = coz they create something out of nothing
      Artisan = they create something but require something first
      Merchant = lowest because they dont create anything but make money out of other's toil. This also meant that merchants are considered only one notch better than gamblers and criminals. These three outcast classes were usually not protected by the daimyo and must manage to protect their own and thus the yakuza clans were born.
