dfoley63 Whatever economic value his 'visit' entailed, doesn't change the fact that he threatened a nation who wished to be left in peace to open up so America could 'set-up shop' in the far east. It can also be argued that his counter isolationist policy turned Japan into the brutal Imperial Japan that raged through the Asia-Pacific in the name of Industrial Expansion introduced by the west.

I just finished my master's in US history but am watching these videos to brush up on my world history knowledge for my teaching certification exams. I have never read the comments before but knew I had to for this video for the Matthew Perry comments-- did not disappoint!

A couple of problems. The Tokugawa Shogunate actually did centralize power, otherwise there would have been constant war between the Daimyos. Also, most samurai during that time were not bureaucrats. Most of them were semi-employed warriors with minimal duties, a bunch more were ronin, and another bunch were bureaucrats.
The Arbitration Ridiculous reply to pointless comment in which the author's appreciation is evidenced, even exaggerated to the point he feels the need to show it off by a personal profile modification.
No no no no no! Hideyoshi's wife did not call Hideyoshi a bald rat, at least not on any record. It comes from a letter written by Oda Nobunaga to Hideyoshi's wife, where Nobunaga called him a bald rat exactly one (1) time that we know of, in order to berate Hideyoshi for not paying enough attention to the wife. (Also, while there are texts that say that Hideyoshi did indeed look like a monkey, it's quite unlikely that anyone would have actually called him that.)
According to EU4, there was no Tokugawa Shogunate. The Ashikaga remained in power, and not only united Japan, but also gave the Koreans a smackdown! They took quite a bit of land, and forced Korea to expand into Manchuria. Then when the Ming was busy in a war with the countless hordes, Japan struck! Japan won the war, forcing Ming to release several kingdoms, including the Qi, who Japan had as a vassal. All the while, they did the unthinkable. They colonized the Americas! Japan sent a fleet with a bunch of samurai, cavalry, and yumi people and royally crushed the Colima, and took their land. And boy did their presence surprise the Europeans.
Identity is gained by contrasting it with counteridentities. The constructed differences are real and fantasy at the same time. Therefore inherent to identity is the struggle for definatory power (agency). The main problem is the overidentification with an identity or disregarding it entirely. The key is to destabilize static identities by questioning its natural and cultural cores. Especially the hegemonic ones (common sense) to gain a dynamic of change and decentralized positioning. The politics of identity (feminism, classism, ageism etc.) are a strategic form of opposition that tends to focus just on one category. The hegemony just shifts from one identification to another (e.g. homonationalism). The key is not the political acception and tolerance but the destabilization of structural/discursive hegemony itself (dialectical emancipation).
Well, somehow it's sometimes good to blur the lines a bit. I would like to have more everyday language at university to overcome this gap. The same goes for art and everyday live. But you're right I might've limited my audience and potential partners in dialogue by writing in that way.
Pre federation in Australia no one would call themselves Australian, you would be a Queenslander or Victorian ect. Alternatively you identified as British
Same was true in the US per-civil war. In fact, George Washington had a heck of a time getting anything from the states despite his fighting a war against Britain for independence. Of course, there were many that did not want independence. I would like to apologize in advance of whatever horrific embarrassment our imbecile that occupies the White House does during his visit to meet the Queen. There is a rumor that under British law the Queen could kill Trump with a sword and it would be fine. If so, I support my queen. No, I have NO problem wishing death on this racist, narcissistic, and completely ignorant con-man that fooled 60,000,000 of my countrymen to vote for him - with Russia's help, of course.. Three million more voted for Clinton but under our twisted, antiquated Electoral College, which has twice given us conservative presidents that received fewer American votes than the Democratic opponent. Nonsensical!! Go Queen!
PS: Thank you Australia for being by our side in EVERY fight we have ever been in. Sorry the idiot personally attacked your Prime Minister over refugees we AGREED to take. This president views it as if America is HIS now and he doesn't need to honor the good name of America because all the other "weak & failed" presidents that proceeded this guy, who I swear thinks he is doing the best job since Abraham Lincoln. There are no words... we're just holding on, hoping he gets impeached because he is the most corrupt in more than a century and laundered Russian money since the 1990's. Otherwise, we just wait for it to - and hope to GOD it does - END soon and with a peaceful transition of power we have always enjoyed (so far anyway). You to Canada!! You've been with our military blunders too - AND you gave us HOCKEY!!!
Every time I watch one of these video series I get overwhelmed by so much info Can't u just talk about one thing individually I really don't remember anything after I finish watching it
It is probably not a constructive pursuit to attempt to determine which was a more important or influential phenomenon of the 19th century -- nationalism or industrialization -- but I think it worthy of being pointed out that mass industrialization changed people's daily (practical) lives in ways that nationalism did not. In fact industrialization enabled some nationalists to better fulfill a variety of aims through increased access and more ready supply of weaponry that could be used to wage war against other nations. I just can't help but question John's assertion that nationalism was 'the' most important -- perhaps it would be better to say that it was one of the most important; as a part of a general cohort of highly influential phenomenons that were rapidly changing people's practical and more philosophical actions and ideas.
This guy kinda sucks, brush over information but no actual insight into what was really happening. Its like he just read a wikipedia and then makes a video.

I am no longer nationalist at all. The very idea of being proud of being born somewhere makes absolutely no sense to me. Are people born in Mexico, or Pakistan, or Texas... any less human than the rest of us? We're all in this together.
Then you don't value you or your people's existence, this world was formed from culture wars and borders is what stops culture wars from happening, borders are necessary to preserve society.
Well then you are a very, very simple individual who hasn't actually begun to even think about any of the basic ideas or truths that underpin or apply to: societies, communities, the concept of the self, identity, literally humans in general... etc etc.
It's great to be proud of a country, but is it OK to leech resources off of other countries in hopes of increasing resources in yours BECAUSE you're proud of your country? Is it worth making enemies because you love your own country so much? Patriotism always has to be taken with a grain of salt.
The thing is, it divides people. People literally fight about whoever’s country is better. Like, in the Middle East (where I live), you have Syria and Lebanon. You can’t tell between the two because they’re so similar, I’m Syrian and I’m always mistaken for a Lebanese. Some goes with the Gulf, they all look the same, dress the same even have the same dialect. Why divide yourselves instead of being united? I honestly really hate nationalism.
@D.SéЬasтiaпо Sçalia What? the word "FOREIGNERS" Wouldn't even exist. Why? Because we're all of the same group. That is humanity. That's what happens when a world without nationalism exists. We wouldn't have different ways of thinking. We wouldn't have a race or national identity. We wouldn't call people who come from Africa "Africans" because we don't think there's a difference. We won't call people who live in Europe "European" because we don't think there's a difference. You're making the logical fallacy that a world without nationalism is like ours except without nationalism. Please, consider reading a bit more and not watching this channel for a while. Also, you commented on a year old comment. That's dumb. Really dumb.
It's honestly like a lot of other things. Supporting a team, believing in a religion. Don't take it to far and all is good. This is coming from a Belgian, otherwise known as some of the least nationalistic people in the world, having a Belgian flag out outside of soccer championship time would make you seem weird.
+Londronable Well first of all I think your mean patriotism. Nationalism is patriotism on steroids. Second of all nationalism is never the answer it leads to to much vanity and a hell allot of hatred. Third it doesn't help that 1/3 of your countries population wants to join France.
Third statement is false, that 1/3 doesn't want to be a part of France since they have differences and historically are the same people as the other 2/3. Besides that they're econimically better of with Belgium. But it doesn't matter because a big part of the 2/3 are tired of them and would love for them to join France. Your second statement seem more like an opinion to me than a proven fact. And to awnser your first statement I think you're mistaking nationalism too much with Imperialism and Fascism. Some Nationalists just want their culture to be left alone and accept other races as long as they're willing to respect the local culture. This would apply to Belgians since I don't see them trying to conquer other lands.
Nationalism is also starting to bloom in Sweden today. Many are skeptic with how it will affect our future as a country, and some are glad that this is happening

I honestly really hate nationalism.

What?
the word "FOREIGNERS" Wouldn't even exist.
Cringes Nationalism god I hate nationalism.
+King Francis Alexander I and then the another 1/3 wants to join Germany
You clearly does not know what nationalism is.
Mathew Perry is so badass
FINALLY, we meet Raul :)
Nationalism is also starting to bloom in Sweden today. Many are skeptic with how it will affect our future as a country, and some are glad that this is happening
