Goryeo rulers from Taejo (1st) to Wonjong (24th) should be emperors, not kings
Goryeo used imperial titles and organizations until Mongols defeated them, and demoted it to kingdom status
The only times Korean rulers were emperors were during pre Mongol Goryeo era (935~1274) and Korean Empire era at the end of Joseon (1897~1910)

For your information, Yi and Lee are the same last name. Lee is todays English standard and in Korean, it's still written and pronounced as "Yi". Side note: The first president of South Korea, Seung Man Rhee, is also a "Yi" or a "Lee". Rhee, Yi, Lee, same last name though they may be different lineages (or the same, you can't tell from just the name). The confusion just stems from Romanization of the Korean language. Ryu and Yoo are the same, Seo and Suh are the same, Park and Bak are the same, Choi and Chwe are all the same last names from different times. The former ones are todays standards

Great video as always, but few notes to add:
Yi Seok is definitely one of the most famous claimants (as he was a singer), but Yi Won, as the adopted son of Prince Yi Gu - son of Crown Prince Yi Un and the previous head of House of Yi - is the one who is commonly recognized as the Prince by the House of Yi and the Korean public. Yi Won is the one who carries out the Royal confucian ceremonies in Jongmyo as of today. Even if the adoption is illegitimate (which was a common practice in Korean succession but illegal according to South Korean law), Yi Seok is the 10th son of Prince Yi Kang while Yi Won is the son of the 9th son of Prince Yi Kang, so Yi Won has a better claim under primogeniture law. Yi Seok has not released any information how Andrew Lee is related to him (Lee and Yi are the same).
It's odd how Korean wikipedia lists Yi Won as the current head while English wiki lists Yi Seok instead. Successful propaganda perhaps? Haha

I think it's because as you said he is way more famous than Yi Won... Yi Seok had few tv appearances, what I heard he teaches the history of Korea in college and he seems to be very enthusiastic about his heritage while looking like a nice kind-hearted grandpa (like emperor Akihito type). In the end korean people do not really pay attention to any of royal descendants because after they got freed from Japan, they blamed them for handing over and younger korean generations do not want them because of USA propaganda where the most liberal country according to US is a republic with US army base on their ground.

Royal Ark that has an extensive genealogy of the Yi family doesn't know about this Andrew Lee who himself has only referred to his father being related to the family without further details. But like you pointed out, this crown prince mainly exists in English language media about Korea, and maybe it's fitting he picks some.distant American relative as his heir.

Even treated the concubines (esp DI) better. I think they chose not to include her in the drama that way so the story would only focus on the love story between YiSan and Deok Im. It's hard to put the Queen in the picture and not create another drama or complication for their love line.

This is really great video. I just wanted to add some additional info: As you said Yeonsangun was one of worst king during choson period. Notice how his title ends with "gun" instead of "jo" or "jong". It means he was a king who was not worthy. There's another king with title "gun" btw. Called gwanghaegun. He was deemed not worthy as well at that time. But modern historians argue gwanghaegun might have actually been smart and practical king. He did not care for traditions and did what seemed right for choson. Many court officials wanted to stay royal to Ming since they viewed Ming dynasty as true successor worthy of being the Middle kingdom. But gwanghaegun being practical king, often changed its allegiance between Ming dynasty and Qing dynasty if it benefited Choson. This was viewed highly unorthodox at the time since Choson viewed manchu dynasties as savages. Thus gwanghaegun earned "gun" title

No problem! Specifically, "gun" is a title applied to all males with royal blood. Crown Princes, brothers of the king, other random princes, nephews, that guy that's descended from the king from over a 100 years ago, etc. Being given the "gun" title means that that king wasn't able to receive a temple name, which all kings, retired or not, get when they die. I'm honestly surprised that the last Emperors of Korea, Gojong and Sunjong didn't get the gun title. To be fair, the Imperial era did work differently from the Joseon era, so I guess there is a difference.
And yes,Gwanghaegun was a pretty neat king. He started a massive rearmament program to repair damages done by the Japanese invasions. He was kicked out for not wanting to get involved in the war between the Ming and Qing, as the Joseon Army was still not up to full strength from the Japanese invasion. The Ming never recognized him as the king, and when Injo usurped him, the Ming certainly were happy. Injo continued to fight the Qing, and went on to be humiliated by the Qing when they inevitably won.

She said they would be pretty but it was a pity there would be no smell. She also built the first observatory in Asia. It has 365 stones. There is a king in the Joseon Dynasty who ends with a "gun" at the end, such as "Yonsan-gun" or "Gwanghae-gun," which means that these two were expelled from the throne. In fact, Yeonsan-gun lost his mind due to his mother's death, and he became the only crazy king of the Joseon Dynasty. The servants expelled the crazy king from the throne. So he was kicked out to the island, and eventually got sick and died. The will was 'I miss the Queen.' Gwanghaegun was not a crazy king. He was a man who took care of the people on behalf of the king during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, which was his crown prince, and made great efforts to rebuild the broken country. The Ming Dynasty, which had a close relationship with Joseon after he became king, began to weaken, and soon seemed to collapse with the advent of the latter. Gwanghae-gun will engage in neutral diplomacy between the Qing Dynasty (Hugeum) and the Ming Dynasty to prevent damage to Joseon. This was an unacceptable behavior in Joseon, which was founded around Confucianism. In addition, Gwanghaegun kills his stepbrother and stepmother. This is because their relationship was very bad and threatened their own throne. Crucially, however, Gwanghaegun is expelled from the throne. It was because he murdered his mother and brother and abandoned his loyalty to the Ming Dynasty. Naturally, Joseon officials drive him out. The reason he was expelled from the throne was that he did not follow Confucian doctrines.
Well, looking at it like this, the power of the kings of the Joseon Dynasty seems very weak. However, the power of the king during the Joseon Dynasty was not as weak as expected. However, the power of bureaucrats was only able to become powerful.

I think I remember reading that the language of Goguryeo (the dominant kingdom prior to the unification by Silla) may have been closely related to Japanese, due to the few surviving words (mostly place names) that we have from that language. Also, the "Who would be king today?" section definitely made me think of the Korean manhwa and drama "Goong" which is based on that very same scenario.

mostly because of strict rules over childhood. Every crown prince in Joseon discipled so hard and watched by eunuchs and courtladies 24/7 and being controlled in almost every way. They finally set loose once they became a king but still the strict rules of confucianism doesn't allow them to completely set free. I'd say the main reason why Korean kings usually die early is because of the stress and its side effect.

Goryeo's name comes from the earlier kingdom Goguryeo, whom Silla defeated with Tang's help. By all measures, for most of the Three Kingdoms period, Goguryeo was the dominant power, boasting by far the most superior military and a strong culture. Baekje was also quite strong due to its maritime commerce, and it also had strong culture. Silla unifying the peninsula was honestly a stroke of good fortune for them. Goguryeo and Baekje were just not going through the best times, and Tang was very strong because of Emperor Taizong's amazing rule. Also, the reason Silla's unification was considered incomplete was because Goguryeo had a successor kingdom called Balhae, founded by the son of a former Goguryeo general, Dae Joyoung. Its territory stretched from the very north of North Korea all the way into parts of what is now Russia. Balhae is controversial because records are spotty and it's believed that most of its people were not Koreans, but it's almost certain that its elite were. When Balhae fell, its elite migrated to Goryeo and were integrated into the ruling class.

fyi, i think there's a typo for King Sejong's son, he is Munjong not Mujong. Otherwise great and accurate content! I can see you did alot of research on it.
*Edit: Just to add on, I feel like the Japanese influence on Korean history is quite minimized in this video, especially during the mid-Joseon era and right before the colonization. Korea experienced a war against Japan in which Japan instigated during Seonjo's reign which is called 임진왜란(Imjinwaelan). This was a massive war that caused a huge impact on the country. The result of the war was a victory for Joseon, but people had to suffer from famine, disease and poor management of the post-war damage by the monarchs. I've seen that you've only highlighted the war with Joseon and Qing, but Imjinwaelan is as significant to Koreans as much as the war against China.
Another additional thing is that during the war and post-war management, Gwanghaegun as a Prince lead the army and tried his best to take care of the suffering people. This lead to the people loving and supporting him as a future king and Seonjo becoming jealous of his own son. This is only a speculation but people think Seonjo being jealous and "bullying" him mentally destroyed Gwanghaegun, making him an incompetant, power hungry king after the passing of Seonjo. This additional information is not really an important part of the history, but its drama and interesting:)
Plus, near the end of Joseon, you noted how Japan and Korea traded somewhat peacefully, but even during his reign Japan pressured Joseon with their advanced military, pressuring Joseon to sign an unfair treaty, influencing Koreans who were friendly towards Japanese influence to form a coup under the military sponsorship of Japan, pressured Joseon to sign an unfair treaty also after that, and people had a very negative opinion on Japan even at that time. Around the time, many Koreans tried to form a movement to repel the Japanese influence from the country. One of the distinctive revolutionary movement was the Donghak Uprising. This movement started off as a revolution against the exploitation of the governers, but soon turned into a war of Korean people against Japanese/Chinese military and the Donghak Uprising tried to fight against the influence of foreign countries. One lead to another and the fall of this revolutionary movement lead to the war between China and Japan in Korean land, the assasination of the Queen, the palace being taken over by Japanese soldiers, and King Gojong being chased out of his own palace. The background of the birth of the Empire of Korea is Gojong, after forced to take refuge in the Russian Legation, trying to fight against the Japanese influences and secure Korea as an independant country. I felt like peaceful is a bit of an odd term to use for these times, and I also hope that term wouldn't misinform people as if Koreans had somewhat a friendship with Japan.

Its interesting how few cross marriages between the rulers of Korea/Mongolia/China/Japan are on the chart.
Is the mongol marriages the totality of them? Or did you just consider any others of little importance?

I'm not aware of any others.

Korean royalties considered marrying foreigners as "barbaric", so cross marriage was not as common as in the West. But there are records of marriage between Kingdom of Baekjae and Japan.

I don't know about Korean and Chinese views on marriages to other royals, but as for Japan, once you reach the Heian period (794 - 1185 CE), noble families (most famously the Fujiwara) arranged for their daughters to wed the emperor, and arramged for only the sons of said daughters to be allowed to succeed. Having a foreigner enter an Imperial marriage would not have been beneficial to those families.
Also, I believe Genghis Khan was said to have taken at least one consort from every people he conquered following their submission.

@@myunghokim7313 That's also got to do with the fact that Europe was a lot more fragmented during this period, so diplomacy was both more important and less structured (as in there not being a tribute system). Also, European kings in that context were both more used to people of different cultures and had more people of "equal/similar standing" to marry... In that context, it doesn't surprise me that there were more marriages between European royal houses than East Asian ones. The whole international system worked differently there.

In the unified Silla , what happened to the nobility of Gogoryeo & Baekje? In the Goryeo dynasty, are the leaders mostly from Silla nobility?
