- Easy Full Head Highlights - Scalp Bleach To Highlights
A Difficult task at the best of times when your client comes in wanting to convert from a full head scalp bleach to highlights.
In this video we take a look at me tackling one of my clients this is the third time my client has had foils since she stopped having scalp bleach.
I am going to show you a easy full head sectioning pattern for a full head highlights and some really key things to think about when taking on a technique like this. as well as very key part of all my blonde techniques the toner, i think for me toning is almost the most important parts of blonde techniques, toning is make or break for me.

I have been a hair stylist for 39 years now and I keep learning every day new styles new cuts but I can truly say I have learned so much from you it's made my life so much better thanks for the great videos !!☺❤
That is absolutely wonderful to hear Deborah thank you for letting me know it is massively appreciated when people get in touch to let me know that they have learnt some new stuff from me.
I dont mean to be so offtopic but does anyone know of a way to log back into an instagram account??
I was stupid forgot the login password. I would appreciate any tips you can give me!
I agree. I’m so grateful for all the wonderful education
Thanks so much
Congratulations for the amount of years youve been a hairstylist...not many people are this dedicated! Im sure your amazing at your job...its a work of art honestly! Ur either talented or not....cus some claim to be hairstylist but they mess up so badly because they just dont get the chemistry or how to style....x
in school and i am SO glad i found you! i have learned so much and you showing the full process is so helpful! thank you
Wonderful Chloe glad you find the channel useful good luck on your journey
I 100% agree with your sectioning, foil placement and spacing. Saturation is absolutely KEY. I am partial to 9 part sectioning.
Thank you very kind glad you joyed it 😁👍🏻
I agree 😏
Thank you for always teaching us your style and want nothing in return. You have such a great heart and full with talent.
Thank you very kind
@@TheLifeOfHair amazing your a true artist
When doing this kind of work I start with 10 vol, until I do the top section I use 20 vol so I don’t need to rinse. I don’t like rinsing, it’s messy and difficult to do thoroughly. Also I find when only doing regrowth, thin foils get me closer, thick foils are my go to when doing first time blonding or tipping the ends out to have more of a sturdy base. In this case i would have blurred the warm band with an 8 ash while all foils are in and after rinsing tapped the roots with the remaining demi to soften leaving the hairlines out. Your outcome was beautiful though!
I agree 100% I love allowing their own natural color for dimension vs. over lightening and then adding artificial depth that fades funky
This video has helped me decide what I am going to do for my client, who has the same hair colour problem. Thank you x
This was maybe the most informative and educational of all your videos, loved that you took the time to thoroughly explain not only what you were doing but also why. Thank you James, you’re the best 👏💖
Wonderful glad you enjoyed it
I can't wait to try out this new sectioning for highlights..I was taught the 9 sections for highlights and as a newly qualified I find this is really taking me a long time..... so hopefully this will help my timings and make it quicker 🙏
Wonderful yes it will definitely make you quicker to work like this one thing I would mention is that its best if you work with wider foils in standard 90 to 100 mm wide foils work really well for this particular technique you do not have to split any of the back quadrant where the hair is at its widest just above the ear
Absolutely…you’re so right about lowlites… I feel exactly the same and I will avoid them as much as I can…. Love your content!
This is the same technique I use , it's definitely the best look and easiest organized technique 💋
Thanks for this James exactly what I need, I have to do a full head for my exams and can't get my timings down, going to practice this sectioning pattern to see if it helps alway's find the sides so difficult for some reason.
Hi Sinead thanks very much glad you enjoyed it hope you’re well all the best
Thank you for your consistent supply of quality education, and also being present through these challenging times.
I hope you and your family stay well, mentally as well as physically.
I’ve been a subscriber of yours for quite some time and I love when I get a notification that there is new content!!! I always learn at least one piece of education that I can immediately incorporate into my work so thank you 🙏🏽 😊)
Thanks dear James. It was so helpful🌹❤
Wonderful thank you
That looks so clean
Very helpful! I wouldn't have seen highlighting as a solution to such a dramatic line of demarcation.
Super glad you found it helpful
Your work is so good to watch and always explained brilliantly

@@TheLifeOfHair When I find a channel I like I'll binge watch videos and sometimes forget to subscribe lol. I'm glad you said something in your video about it!
BTW love your channel and you're a great teacher!
In these times of confinement, I’m trying to inform myself as much as I can to see if I will be able to highlight my own hair . I know your videos aren’t for non professionals but it really helps to see how your way of doing it is working out. Thank you for being so easy to understand ! Now that all the ladies have to stay inside and can’t really go to the hairdresser, they will love to watch your videos on your tube and learn from them. I’m sure you’ll get a lot of views😉
Superb glad you enjoyed it and you found it easy to understand good luck 👍🏻👍🏻😁
I used this technique today and it came out amazing. Thank you
Fantastic Rebecca thanks for letting me know
Super natural results ...... love it 😍 and totally agree about starting at the back to rinse easily and not over processing the products too much...... 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
What a great video! Thank you so much

Full foils are my favorite to do in the salon! great video!
Yes I like a good full head to Olivia 👍🏻
Great presentation!!! What a great teacher you are ✂️
Thank you Lisa much appreciated
Beautiful work ❤️
Fantastic video as always James I will be using this next time I like the perfect blend ! I took my back highlights off with a spray of water and gently wipe and wash, it made such a difference when I toned second time around going lighter slower is the best way, I saw my mistakes last time and have learnt from it ! what a lovely blonde !
Superb Mandi, It’s always important to learn from my mistakes most of my discoveries have been from my mistakes but that’s life 😁👍🏻
Beautiful! Completely agree with you about low lights looking muddy, I don’t tend to add them in when there is a lot of blonde.
Thank you so much for your videos, you explained and demonstrated in a way I understand, I’m still a student and I still find it hard to understand when my instructors explain to me, I’m a visual learner so thank you
Superb Tori I’m so pleased that you took away some information that helped you on your journey to it being a hairdresser 😁👍🏻
Beautiful!
Wonderful thank you very much
Great work! I learn more from you then anybody! 💕🙏
Beautiful finish
Thank you very much
Fantastic! I could watch you foil all day! AmaZing education! Also thank you for the formulations.
Wonderful Robert very kind of you to say buddy
You’re so great !!
And it’s easy to follow your explanation. 😊
Thank you very much Vida
I have always used the same hi lighting technique and weave pattern! Although I often use a herringbone weave as it makes it even more timeless. I time the base slice starting 40mins and I change the volume of peroxide for the top of the head lowering it for the hairline! Nice lights!
What is herringbone weave ?
I love watching your channel
Ah that is lovely thank you very much
Absolutely beautiful work
Thank you 🙏🏻
Hi James wonderful placement I used to be a 9 section wella trained guy! However experience helps over the years but absolutely love this one👍 definitely agree with the baby lights around hairline and following head shape something I've only tried about the last 6 months but getting much much nicer results with 😊 I also love the 9 level on root toner followed by the 10. Something I've yet not tried but makes perfect sense as I've had the "ashy" ends grabbing on some clients😳 however.... after watching one of your recent tuitions been using your warm/ cool toning recommendation and have to say Amazing and just what I've been wanting! Your the Best James and Really appreciate all your wonderful Free classes! 👍🙏😊 so come on guys get pressing that Subscription Bell for this Amazing Educator 👍🙏😊
We also need to encourage people to get notifications.... that’s the part that really going to get things going for him!🙏🏽🤛🏼👍🏽💕

Just watched this again. Beautiful work James.
Finally! A great, well informed video! I’m definitely subscribing to you!
Wonderful glad you appreciated the video thank you for the subscription
Hi James, another great video, love watching your videos and learning new things from you, i changed the way i fold my foils after watching one of your videos, and now cant wait to try this new sectioning technique as normally i do 5 sections at the back. Your a brilliant teacher, keep up the good work;-)
Oh fantastic thank you for commenting and letting me know I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos 🙏🏻😁
James. Please ALWAYS give the EXACT formula that you are using so that we may have similar results and there is no guessing involved. Thank you. Very nice look.
Thank you!
You’re very welcome
Hi James, thanks for all your great videos. What way would you say is best for dealing with the top of the head so you don't see lines when doing highlights close to the scalp? I get lines at the top.
This was a great video.. explained very nicely, very informative... Love the sectioning
Wicked Honey Bea ✌🏻😁
Love it , it's perfect ✨ thanks for the details can't wait to try this , good job 👍

Beautiful
Looks great as always!
Thanks Dianevery kind
Amazing your a true talented artist 💪❤
Great job! I love the way you share information. It’s so important in our field. It seems the new normal is highlighting and then shadow and tone - I’ve been doing hair so long - I started with a highlighting cap. 😷😂😎Lol. My question - what is your timing on a full highlight like this ? ( mine is about an hour ) and what is your cost ? I charge by the hour now - instead of by service. Works better for me in my business model. Thanks again!
Thank you Christopher yes great question so I generally book out around an hour our like yourself and for this type of thing exclude toning I would charge around £135 And I have different prices for different toning services for a root shadow it’s around £57 I book out 30 to 45 minutes depending on the contrast of the colour, the more contrast in the more time I give myself. Hope that answers your questions Christopher 😁👍🏻
Tip for nape....do bottom 3 rows after you complete up to the crown....these process so fast and often girls hv breakage here from pont tails or over processing due to heat
Nice tip thank you very much
Impressive. I thought for sure you wouldn't get the orange banding in the midstrand above the previously lightened hair with such a nice clean application folding the foil twice. Bummer when that happens. Yet you were able to correct it and finish with a flawless blend.
Hi James, another great video!! I've learnt so much from watching you. I agree with you about removing the back foils as soon as they are done, it's something I always do, yes it's time consuming, yes its messy but it's worth it to ensure the client still has hair left, I sometimes find I have to do this by the time I reach the top, even though I start with 20vol most of the time, especially when the client has thick heavy hair as the heat soon builds up. Thankyou for keeping us all up to date with your great techniques and problem solving!! 👍
Glad you enjoyed it the game player HD yes I find that too sometimes if the clients really hot or it’s a really hot day or like you say they’ve got really thick hair you can seem fine the back is ready and you’ve only just got to the top I still take them out at that point actually attend to Subdivide head into 2 back then front even So when I finish the back I then go and check my first foils and if I need to remove them then I do It before I start the top as you said
Thank you I’d love to use this technique.
Wonderful I hope you get on well using it
I do love this technique. But I would done the first two bottom quadrants then work my way up.
Thankyou so much for this xx
You are very welcome mollieglad you liked it
very good look and learn! keep it up!
Thank you Dany
thank you very much for the video! question : why do you use clay lightener rather than regular lightener? you are so right on saturation, it is more tricky than it looks! gorgeous result!
Thank you very much Juliette I just like the consistency of this particular light now it’s just a regular bleach that is based on clay and honey for a nice texture it looks just like the bleach eight levels It’s a bit kinder to the hair than normal bleach though. 😁👍🏻
Beautiful thanks
You’re welcome Debra glad you liked it 😁👍🏻
Love your videos!
Thank you 🙏🏻
You are amazing👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I love how you explain as you go and share the formula too. I’m new to Redken SEQ toners.
Can you pls mention how long does it take you start to finish ? So we have an idea what to expect from similar projects. I know it’s different for every canvas who seats in the chair.
Also I find it takes from 2 to 5 hrs and ppl finds it expensive- whenever they bring in a SM inspiration pic. I need to identify the technique used and based on it I customized but still takes so much time for little money.
Prices varies depending on location and stylists experience and expertises, and I figure ppl don’t care how well educated u are in the subject! They just want it done excellent, affordable and fast! In my consultation I tell them the pros and cons that I may encounter along the way.. I almost never promise but I try to over deliver it. Yes they are happy but then I don’t see them like in 6 months down the Road. I think 🤔 SM is full of unrealistic expectations for guests bc artists make look so easy , they aren’t showing it all the cons they encounter when doing those models hair. Not everyone got virgins H root to end, majorities come with a color correction mess look like. Thanks for sharing J, I learn everyday “15 yrs in the BI” ❤️🇨🇦
Wonderful thank you for this comments of a yes I will try and remember to add in how long it took me to do these processes it is very important for people who are watching us who are not hairstylist to fully understand the time that this takes to do sometimes and the expectations of maintenance et cetera thank you for your comments as always
Beautiful!!!
Thank you 🙏🏻
Amazingggggg..good work .like it
Wonderful glad you enjoyed it
Awesome thanks 💜
It is my pleasure Tanya glad you enjoyed it
Awesome job, love how you did the foils as well! How long was this process? I know different prices can vary depending on the salon , but what you accomplished what would you recommend on charging the client?
Thank you for sharing, wish I lived close to you , I’d come to you…😊
Gosh you have a beautiful face. I love the accent ( for us it’s an accent 🤣) . Great hair artist as well.
Thank you licensed and insured very kind of you 😊
Hi I’m just wondering what tone the level 9 was at her roots? You said 9 shades EQ but that’s it. I am learning so much from your videos and would also like to know more about becoming a patron. Thank you
Charlotte
Very beautiful!
always enjoy watching your work
Thank you very kind 👍🏻😁
I’ve watched few of your videos and saved them. I find easy to follow. So thank you for that.
My question is, how do know / determine that new hair ( root area) and previously hilighted hair will lift to the same level?
Thank you .
Waiting for a reply
Fantastic videoooo ❤, please advise which developer have you used (20,30,40) on entire head, or you used differently volumes, ty 😊
Been getting ALOT of clients lately with CRAZY THICK baby hairs around the hairline. I know all of them have had covid and this makes doing them hairline so hard! Please do a video about this if at all possible I’m struggling so much
Love it
Gorgeous
Thank you 😁👍🏻
Absolutely stunning 😍 I’ve got the same root after baby lights but my ends are very orange my mid length is a cool tone blonde and I need now to do it at home . Please could you advise 🙏🏻
That sounds quite tricky maybe I could help you better if you send me a picture on Instagram @thelifeofhair1
Very nice good job
Great work as always. I really enjoy your videos, thank you for all the content you put out. On a somewhat similar note, can you please do a video on how to color gray roots at home and do a light touch-up on highlights. Being that we are socially isolated at this time, my gray is out for the world to see. I’ve been gray since my late teens and usually get my hair done professionally. However, since one never knows, I always have backup of Wella Permanent Color at home in 8NN & 9NN and 20 volume devolver. I also have some powdered blue bleach I pick up at the beauty supply store that I’ve used a few times with 20 volume developer to touch up my highlights. I’ve never done roots and highlights in one step but I really prefer to try that way as it’s done at the salon since I find it looks better. Perhaps I have too much hope that I can achieve all this at home on my own so feel free to offer any feedback you think would help. I’m sure so many people would benefit from some content of this nature since this CoronaVirus has many of us feeling stuck and we really don’t know when the quarantine will be lifted. I’m in the States and all non-essential type businesses have been closed at minimum until the end of March, perhaps longer. Thank you in advance, I really appreciate any help you can provide.
Hi Alice thank you for your lovely comment yes I have thought about it long and hard on how I could create some content to help you guys out I can’t say I’ve come up with anything comprehensive yet but I am working on it I know there are a lot of people out there just flinging out information but if I’m going to do something I need it to work and be effective for those who I am aiming at so keep your eyes peeled and if I come up with something I’ll definitely do it, Stay safe in these strange times Hopefully it will all be over soon. 👍🏻
The Life Of Hair THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Very amazing result: my sincere compliments!
The RUclips automatic translator is not accurate, so the translation in my language is not reliable and I would kindly like some detailed clarifications.
1) Were you able to get such an intense lightening only with 20 Volumes oxygen?...
2) Also, I didn't quite understand with which different colors you toned the roots, lengths and ends.
3) Please also tell me how many volumes of oxygen you added to the toning colors and how long did you let the toner work on the hair.
Could you describe this to me better in detail? Thanks!!!!!
Wonderful glad you appreciated the video! So the first question how did I get so much lift from 20 volume that is purely down to the fact that the hair that I was working on was a natural level seven and therefore 20 volume didn’t have a lot of work to do to get it up to another 9/10.
Question to the toner are used 09N Redken shades EQ on the root area and stretched it down past the Occipital bone and the parietal ridge on the head. And for the ends are used 010 and Redken shades EQ.
And for your third question are used 6 volume Redken shades EQ processing solution.
@@TheLifeOfHair - Many thanks for the detailed answer! Since joining your channel I have perfected my working style a lot, even though I have been a professional hairdresser for 35 years. We must always learn with humility and ask those who know more. I congratulate you and thank you again for your extraordinary skill that you spread by your videos.
Good boy!
do you have any tips for removing semi permanent hair color? i tried everything and it just turned green
and you're amazing btw 💕💕
Well when leaving Demi permanent shouldn’t be that difficult as two options here really bleaching or using a colour remover but if it keeps going green there’s something else going on there and old direct die direct dye maybe purple Purple is notorious for going green when you bleach it The best thing you can do really is to lift the hair turn it green and then neutralise the green with the appropriate neutralising shade whatever is opposite it on the colour wheel if you’re getting the green is yellow result then you will need a light/pale pink violet result like a magenta for instance or something that is on the level that you’ve left it to say 8/26
Have you tried malibu color remover??
