really nice highlights and detailed information. like the fact you added the toner information in. please do highlights and in between colour to cover gray tutorial. I will use this half head highlights method in salon
Welcome to my channel William Charles, your lucky you have flexible time. In Australia it's common to have a 45 min appointment time for a 1/2 head of foils
James at the salon I work my boss will complain if I say this half head highlight. I thank you for this tutorial. Really appreciate it. From California.
Hi James, I like your technic, I'm returning back to hairdressing after a longtime, so I'm learning foiling & find your video's really easy to follow....I'm in N.Z
Thank you so much James.. This helped me so much today! The way I was taught never quite worked for me and I've not enjoyed it.. this was perfect and I'm 'actually' looking forward to doing future services 🤣😉🙏
Beautiful work! I'd really like to know what brush you are using to apply the lightener? It's the perfect size and I love the handle on it. Looks like it would be easy to work with. Can you share which brand and name please?? Thanks, Cat from 🇨🇦
Hi James, really learnt a lot from this thank you. If you were doing full head foils, do you do the same sectioning and just start at the base of the neck? (By kids are called James and Annabelle BTW 😊)
@@HairByJamesAnnabel thank you for your reply, I've been practising on my block head following your video, I'm just slow! But my foils look so much neater which is great 🤌 Yep Annabelle is 11 and James is 7, great names 🥰 I'm in the UK. I would book out about 1.5 hours for half head, I'm self employed so I can do that but I want to get quicker. Would u recommend just practising over and over until you get quicker?
@@jackiehall-hn3ll Hey Jackie, yes practice makes perfect. I used to mix flour and conditioner and practice my foiling to get quicker. I also pre fold my foils exactly in half. This allows me to close the foil faster. Also remember to pivot your sections, maintaining depth behind the face frame and parting whilst placing brightness in the face frame and parting. I always think how can i achieve the same result with less foils. Over foiling eliminates dimension, i always educate my clients that dimension will create a more natural result, the depth will make the blonde highlights look brighter, and the bonus is the grow out will need less maintenance. If you can accomodate your apt for 1.5 hours that is amazing. When i first started foiling i would be given 1 hour, now i recommend 3/4 heads to every client and do them in 45 minutes. Keep up the amazing work
@@HairByJamesAnnabel thank you I will take that advice on board, pre folding foils definitely helps, and if I can use less foils that's a bonus! Appreciate your advice a lot!
Would you still section this way to put a money piece in or would you have to section the triangle like your other video? Sorry I’m currently learning and my friend wants half a head but a money piece so trying to figure out how I would section it to incorporate both xxx
Do you foil top leaving side part in place? little hard to tell. Also if client wanted more dimension could you do half inch sub sections instead of 5mm? Final question: when foiling top 2 sections do foils have to meet exactly in middle from left side/right side on top? Sorry so many questions I am trying to perfect my organic highlights.:)
Hey there! this colour application was zoned to the centre parting. You could do it to a side part. You could take larger sections if you wish, the result will be heavier and will look stronger. In the top zones you can always blend with zone toning. Otherwise with back combing and foiling under the parting so it blends. I hope this answers your questions
@@hottiejmd1987 it's from both. You can highlight with different tint colours and high lifts, you can also create highlights in reverse with low lighting and toning. Open your mind to all your options
Hey Martin, i'm using Contrast foil (12.5cm x 20cm) it is textured for firm grip. I also pre fold my foil, helps to work a little faster and cleaner. I highly recommend this foil, it's really nice to use
Привет, я из России. Набор прядей на пооголовы делаю долго, целый час. 🤦♀️мало практики, не понимаю как красиво сделать эффект, рисунок на макушке, где вихры)
I have a question! Can I do this on old flat ironed hair? I have coily Afro hair and this would just be impossible on myself in it’s natural state 🥲 I’d let you do my hair in a heartbeat! So skillful ❤
Hey Noodles, on Afro hair i do this on wet hair (it makes the process work well). You can also do the same sectioning and use freehand balayage techniques.

Isn’t that considered back to back sections? Along hairline? Besides slight pivot, would you need too diagonal rows in side sections? Thank you.
Sorry Seeleygirl i don't understand what you mean by two diagonal sections.
Thanks master❤❤❤❤❤
You are most welcome, Glad you enjoy'd it
James , fantastic once again. How do I make an appointment, with you?
Thank you so much Pauline. If your in Melbourne Australia i would love to cut your hair.
Did you put more sections in second side in order to get some closer to the hairline? I would love to see each coil on second side.
I put the same foils in both sides as mentioned in the tutorial, i edited the second side to be faster as i was repeating exactly the same application
This is exactly how I was taught to do foil.
Can't beat all the classic applications

Hey Sabina Runka, thanks for watching
I want to do this on my daughter’s hair. She is a dark blonde naturally but how do I know what colour highlight to use?
Hey! you can do the same application highlighting with bleach and 20 vol. And then choose a lighter blonde than her natural to tone
Different color highlights is created from toning the highlights. Not the highlights themselves
@@hottiejmd1987 it's from both. You can highlight with different tint colours and high lifts, you can also create highlights in reverse with low lighting and toning. Open your mind to all your options
How many foils do you need for a half highlight?
Depends on how much hair density your client has. I never count
What foil are you using mr?x
