I’m a baby hairstylist, I was taught this way by my teacher and it is beautiful. However I have had an issue with this placement twice. Once on someone who had very fine and low density hair. It barely showed up as a money piece. The other time I had an issue was with a client who had a lot of hair and a wider flatter head shape and it was the chunkiest ugliest money piece I’ve seen and was my worst colour I’ve done. I was really upset as I’m trying to do my best and gain a clientele, but what I learned is that depending on the hair type and density and shape of someone’s face/head can change this technique so warning! When done right with the right person it is the prettiest.
Hey Victoria, thank you so much for your comment. Depending on head shape and hair density will definitely determine the result of your face frame application. My tip before colouring is to comb the hair into natural fall, and lift and drop where you want to see the colour, and then section according to wear the hair falls and how strong or soft you want the application to be.
Live and learn! Most of us learn by mistakes. Especially starting out. Then we learn even more by correction! 😎

Well taught and presented, James, thank you! I have a request, if possible, could you please create a video on money pieces and/or face-framing for clients with a deep side part? These applications don't balance the highlights well on both sides of the part, and I cant fix the problem without filling the top of the head with foils (which weakens the look of a face frame and/or money piece---Or, simply isn't what the client wants). However, I can't figure out a foil placement that works. Help!"
Great suggestion! Best tip is to approach each side visually working with the density of each side individually. Obviously the side with more density will need more highlights than the other side. Even with a centre parting, each side of the head has different hair density and also hairline. Another tip would be to section out the vail that falls over the desired face frame, this could help you not to over highlight. Let me know how you go
