What ppl need to understand that those chunky lines actually look better on naturally curly and frizzy (also vety long) hair like mine. That's why i have to do my own highlights. Every time I go to a hairdresser for highlights, and i tell them i want a bit chunkier highlights further apart, they still put them too close together. It's a mess. After 3 attempts i gave up and have to do it myself. Just let people have the hairstyles they actually want. It's a matter of taste, not right/wrong.
Yes, I do chunky highlights on my brown, curly hair peek-a-boo style where they don't highlight right where I part my hair, and that helps let it grow out a little longer before needing a touch up. I have color done every 10-12 weeks! Too fine of highlights changes the overall color, but chunky leaves it brown with the blonder color coming through. Benefits to both!
Curly hair is a very different animal altogether! Overall though, I think this is a really helpful video. I am going to try these techniques with much thicker pieces of curly hair in my foils.
I actually came to take notes on the "Don't" side bc I asked for the chunky look (I also have 2c/3a curls) and $425 & 3 returns to the salon they did not do what I asked. I can't even see the different colors in my hair bc they foiled them so soft and fine and close together. INSANELY frustrating. So now I'm doing them myself. Just do what I ask. I want the chunks!!
Can you explain why chunky highlights are better for curly girls? I'm a curly gir so maybe i can help direct my stylist next time she does my highlights? l
I am not a hair stylist at all, I’m actually a nurse lol. I do a lot of stuff on my own after a TON of research. I have been obsessed with learning everything hair these days. You are so kind to do this. All the little tips and tricks and reasoning is invaluable. I would think for anyone, especially those that are color specialists and want to continually educate themselves. Those that critique you and make comments about how your doing it is quite laughable. I don’t understand why this is such a touchy subject for some. Let people be. She’s really doing everyone a favor and giving really good information. Pride is a crutch. Put it aside. Keep doing you girl!❤
❤❤❤😊 absolutely agreed 👍🏽 😊. Professional colorist here 👋 WELL SAID! Her tips done like this ABSOLUTELY help me so much! I’m shocked anyone would disagree or take the time to complain. Love it! I’m so glad btw as a professional myself, that if you choose to do so at home you research it and do it correct!❤❤❤ good!
Haha! Nurse here too! I do the same thing! Big do it yourself-er, especially with a 15 year old daughter who likes to color her hair a LOT. Thankfully my niece is a stylist (but quite a distance away)so she tells me what to do. But videos like this are invaluable! I’m a doer….so seeing it helps a LOT!
Funny- found myself in a good bit of your comment. Nurse who has a big interest in hair and whose been doing a lot of research. Finally got to a place to give my own hair a go. Happy with the results. I’ve always loved hair and nails ( I do my one as well ) hair more so, and was missing parts because of different terms used for the lighting process and toner. What confused me was the toner talk always sitting in the blonde realm. Any content I came across only explained how to reach the highest level of lift. I wasn’t looking to be platinum but wanted medium copper and caramel highlights. Once I did the bleaching on my hair and stopped mid way so it wouldn’t get too light, I discovered I was able to get my results. Didn’t use “ toner “ but hair color which worked . Now I see content explaining how to achieve copper and other fashion colors which includes the bleaching and how you don’t need to have it sit for the directed time and toner is used with a level of developer that professionals typically have access to. It’s fascinating how much I’ve learned and how much I’ve yet to discover. Good luck and thank you to all of those who freely share their knowledge, expertise, and experience . I’m truly grateful.
I saw one colorist apply the bleach onto the foil first to help saturate the other side of the weave and keep it in place on the foil. Seemed like a good technique
I just started Cosmo school two months ago and had to do 60 foils as one of my tasks to transition to the floor. I struggled because of mainly making more work for myself and taking too long. You helped me be okay with taking 30 min-hr longer than my classmates that get done in two hours. Thank you for tips on going vertical at the hairline, thin sections, and being thorough!
I honestly do like the effect of the chunky lines on the don’t side lol. But as a hairstylist I see value in every kind of effect and technique no matter how old or out of date it is because those things can always be used in modern coloring. I think these days nothings off limits but I do really appreciate your showing us some examples of both do’s and dont’s. Great video thank you
This video needs to be shown in every beauty school! I have been doing hair since 1986 and was not taught how to foil ( cap was king) much less properly. Had to teach myself. I remember the first foil highlight i did took me 4 hours to put up lol...thank god I used Sunglitz (heat activated) otherwise that poor client would have foils dropping on the floor. A video like this would have saved me much time and heartache. Well done.
I started in 1986 too and I concur we were not taught foils. The "frosting Cap" with the hook that removed scalp skin and hair. Self taught and I was sweating it in the 90's. I love kristi' videos. What's the closest airport to your Salon, Kristi? Seriously, I would save up and fly from FL.
I commend you for the care and respect you give your clients. After I found a stylist/colorist w your approach I was so happy then she moved. From then on I couldn't find anyone who did it your way. I would try to suggest w/o offense but most do not want to be told by a layperson how to do. I used to wonder if they knew the foils were sliding because that would mean faster regrowth lines and I'd have to come back sooner so more money for them but guess what..I never went back. I just resorted to doing ac tone on tone at home..its no longer highlighted and I miss my highlights so I started exploring how to do it st home and that's how I found your video. I wish you were in my area..I'd definitely go to you! Good work!
I’m not a hairstylist but I have resisted getting all over highlights because of the “don’t” method which is what I’ve ended up with in the past. The “do” side is what I’ve been longing for but I had no idea how to ask for it! Now I do! This is genius and is appreciated by us lay people just as much as hair stylists!
Girl you save my life with your videos!!!! I used your technique and for the first time today I felt my clients hair came out PERFECT! You’re amazing and I appreciate you!!!!! Thank you!
Thank you so much. You have no idea how much your videos help me understand, and fix my techniques! I felt hopeless for the first few months of cosmetology school but hair is finally starting to make sense thanks to creators like you. ❣️
So true ! I’m attending Paul mitchell school! And I feel very lost ! Their education is very lacking !!! Sometimes I feel like I wanna give up ! But no ..
i went to cosmetology school when i was in high school 5-6 years ago and they still teach the dont side 😭😂 i remember the first time i did highlights on my mannequin miss debra she had chunky highlights and i had so many bands in her front hairline 😂 when i become and instructor i will be showing your video to my students lol thank you!!
I know! And it was so discouraging for me because I tried so hard to do exactly what I was told and it just made no sense why it would come out so terrible and sloppy.
Thank you 🙏🙏 this is so helpful!!! I had no idea hair color sitting out could oxidize and I have been guilty of not utilizing the whole hair, but zebra stripes that are horizontal have been avoided and they do not look good at ALL! Also squeezing Will cause a crease and having to cover those up is not 🚫 ideal! I'm not a hair dresser at ALL but OMG I have had hair dressers butcher my hair color with these mistakes and a few that were AMAZING! I wish I could get in with someone like U but where I live I have yet to find anyone in Years so I just do simple things I'm comfortable with that probably takes more time than a real pro.... so Thank U! 🙏🙏🙏
It's funny how they change the name of a technic when it's what we have been doing all along. I do love they way to teach and I agree with Elizabeth Kemp, they should tech it in beauty school. The sad thing is if you don't get a good teacher that really cares, it just because a cash cow for the beauty school.
The don't side is EXACTLY how I was taught in school. One day in a salon someone I was apprenticing under said " why are u choosing that way to section and foil." Not to be mean, but to make me think of the why and how. I later started doing more diagonal foils, which does give a softer look, but I am excited to try your foil placement. I have a client with a heavy side bang, ( early 2000's style lol) how would you highlight that? I mean she cut it herself and there is little to no transition between it and the length of the rest of her hair.
I have been DYI my hair for 30 yrs. But I don't usually highlight it. Today I did foils for the second time and did a couple of your don't. I will be saving your video to reference the next time I highlight.
I am not saying this lightly.. You are the best when it comes to describing these videos and the way of coloring the hair is beautiful ❤ thank you so much stay blessed 🙌 I myself need a bigger weave due to my natural waves but I doo agree the tease is important and it's nice to not need a shadow tap. 😊
They don’t side is from the 90s and early 2000s and aside from that chunky highlight, she demonstrates at least 6 (that I counted) other technical mistakes. It’s more abt those issues than the overdone chunk lights
This is absolutely amazing and so clear. Now I understand why I've had those bad, stripey highlights in the past....and now I know I know why I paid $300 for the best highlights I've ever had (only did that once!!). Question for stylists: Is it rude to ask your stylist specifically to do the verticle highlights? Would they be annoyed like your trying to tell them how to do their job? If not I will definitely mention this.
Hello! I personally wouldn’t be offended if you say it like, “oh I love the vertical highlights I saw that created this effect, could we do that?” Or if you’ve tried explaining the look you want but are having a hard time getting those results, being more direct or saying, I saw this technique for this like I like, idk if that’s the same as what you do but could we try that? Also, thank you for watching.
I would say I have definitely made the stripe mistake once and never again lol! 🤣 now I been doing hair for 5 years and I definitely prefer the more tedious method of soft highlights and balayage to the wam bam thank you maam type of foils :3
Thanks so much for taking the time to do this. Super helpful. My only criticism would be that the left side was done chunky and the right said was done with fine weaves. Maybe a good comparison would be to do the left side with the same placement as you did but the same size weaves as the right side
I can definitely see where the foil was creased, it's such a good Tipp not to do so. I'm going to follow that on my own hair next time I do my highlights. Thanks for that :)
I got that same mannequin from Amazon awhile ago and still haven’t used it lol.. it’s interesting that the manufacturer who makes them makes all the pivot point mannequins.. loved the video hope you make us more do vs don’t videos or how to correct the don’t side!
Very good on explaining the details of foiling - we sometimes forget about details & wonder why things screw up.thanks for showing - I stopped folding my foils on the sides unless I have a part that’s a tiny area..
Dont side is my worst nightmare. It's ok if somebody likes this style. I prefer natural, effortless looking finish. Thank you ever so much for this tutorial ❤️
I'd love to see a video of your pattern for partials vs heavy partials, vs full highlight and heavy highlights and how much you charge for each. I think I've been doing heavy partials for a regular partial price, as far as how many foils I do (compared to other stylists anyway).
Hair is such a huge deal for self esteem and coming from just growing back bald spots I NOW see and feel that! Also having hair being all cut off as a young gawky kid lol 🤣 didn't feel so well. It may sound trivial but what U do changes lives...trust me! Especially bc U do it well and with passion! It shows and it's so beautiful... Like you!
Gurlllll whyyyyy do I have to live as far across the country from you as possible!? LOL! If I was rich I swear I’d fly to the PNW every 5 weeks so you could highlight my hair! So sick of trying to find someone here who can do it without including every single thing from your “Don’t” section! 😂!
You mentioned that u see people have their color mixed sitting out with a 30, a 10, a 20 volume ALL mixed prior to application! May I ask do u see this in videos or in salon settings? Bc I would appreciate the advice if it is given in a kind manner especially from a pro like U... But I also understand that some people get VERY sensitive!? I would thank U! If it's already too late and the colors are mixed, maybe U could say something for next time? I do not know if I could in that situation either so it is easier said than done! ❤ ✌️ I adore THIS though and your Jason Bourne...esque professional hair guru auto-pilot (from your immense skill, hard work, talent, passion, & experience) kicked in bc u were hesitant 2 do the "Don'ts" side applications with your hands but you did it anyhow as an educator! WOW 🙏🔥
Love this video! I would love to see a whole head done on a person with fine hair. I wish I knew where I could get this done on my hair. Unfortunately, every place around here does the “don’t “side😩
Very cool😊I hope I don't remember the don'ts ,that was a long part of the vid , I'll totally confuse some of this in my mind lol🎉at 1 point I got distracted and lost the thread a sec and had to watch some again and go back silly me😂but thanks , very useful and I think the do sides brill❤
Good lord, I'm more on the "don't side" versus the "right side" but hey, we weren't born knowing so continue practice and diligence will get me to the "right side" LOL :) Thanks for this video. Been binging on your videos and can happily say I have been using your money piece method...haven't mastered it yet but not definitely not where I used to be!
Thank you for this video, I now know what has been happening to my hair highlights at the salon. I always walk away with "roots" and chunks. I always ask for highlights that look blended, no roots or chunks and it never happens.
So u remember in the early 2000s this striped look was so popular remember Mohawk section on top and back to back bleach and lowlight slices lmfao lol. Hell no . Then the dark Hair underneath and the blonde on top lol. I’m licensed in Cali . U did good :)
Girl this helped so much especially with the foils because mine would keep coming out splotchy because of me folding them so tight, and its really hard for me to do foils on myself regardless but this has still helped so much
I use a smaller Mohawk because I feel like I have more control (more tension and less hair to slip) , but since I have more experience now I feel like I should try taking bigger sections. Thank you for this video I can’t want to do my next highlight with these tips!
Curly or not , chunky hihgliths has the Dos and Donts, I personally messy around all the time with my hair, britney 90s, brit 00s, and all kind of "fashion" ... it depends what effect you wanna have, and how you USE your hair. Just because some people doesnt like chunky or babies, yada yada yada IT DOES MATTER THE FOIL HONEY! the time, the temperature, aproximety with the head, all that jazz !!! it takes 2 to tango , but takes 1.000.000 videos and tutorials a life experiences to do the way you wanna do BUT without F... YOUR HAIR, I loved this video, hate some comments. be free from " dictators" , shes is HELPING people! cmon!!! sorry my english, Xs from BR.
Back when I went to school, the don’t side was on trend. Stripey streaks like Kelly Clarkson was the look! Now it’s so taboo. I always angle them now. I have NEVER creased foil. What do you think about the flap that some foilers leave under the bottom so they can tighten the foil Afterwards???? Thoughts on highlighting boards??
I personally don’t like re tightening my foils that way, I feel like it’s too much movement. I just hold at the top corners to tighten up if I need to. Also, I love boards now, especially with such long hair. It has helped prevent wrist paid and I get better application from the hard surface.
I like the fact you do baby lights around the front part of the face. I dont understand why you would go so close to the edge of the foil. I kind of get that you cover more hair. But when using bleach, it expands, and if your that close to the edge then there is a good chance that the bleach will bleed out the sides and on to the other hair, causing spotting. That is why i do leave a small amount of space in the foils. But i do like the technique you use and i do agree with most of what your talking about.
I understand what what you’re saying…. However I slightly water my bleach down to prevent so much swelling and don’t get bleeders. Sometimes just knowing your product helps with being able to get right up to the top of the foil….
@@hairbykristijennings6648 i work with all kinds of bleach and i do know my products very well because you get the best out of them when you know them. But i think your technique is good but i dont agree with everything. Thats the good thing about seeing how others work. I appreciate your work and thank you for loading this video.
@@hairbykristijennings6648 ok. Just a quick question. When you dilute the bleach, do you use a higher peroxide so when its diluted its stays a reasonable strength, e.g. 12% diluted makes 9%. Or is it just a dash of water. I know with Goldwell you can add a highlift to the bleach to prevent it from swelling as much. Ive never seen a colourist pinch their foils like you showed on the "dont" side. Which was good to see as this is a giant No No. I have found the schwarzkopf 9+ bleach very good to work with and is by far my favourite. I did my colour application and colour correction at the academy in London. Before they brought this bleach out. Paul Mitchell bleach was pretty much the best.
Thank you so much for taking time to offer these tutorials! If it takes longer to foil the back to front, do you suggest using lower volume developer so it won’t be too developed from the front?
Yes! That way it processes evenly. Unless they have very dark hair, I'd stay with 20 vol and just pull out earlier. But generally darker hair has the strength to sit longer
Hi Kristi! You mentioned in this video that you have a technique you could demonstrate for moving/lifting foils without causing slipping or bleeding. This seems especially important for times when foiling horizontally starting from the top of the head and working your way down. I’ve seen this in a few of your videos and it seems you are also teasing at the root in those....not sure if that’s the trick? Thanks! 😃
I absolutely love your videos. I've learned so many great tips from them. I have to laugh though. Everything on your 'don't' side is pretty much what they taught me to do in beauty School... LOL
I've watched this video maybe ten times and I'm still too scared. I have very long hair, past my rear which makes it more expensive and I've never been able to afford to get really nice tight highlights done an with my length doing it myself isn't an option, and now that I can afford it, I'm too worried that I'll get someone who will do all those "don'ts". I wish you could do my hair 😭 you blend it so beautifully.
Great educator. Well done. That don't side is awful. Maybe just a beginner. Fair enough But we all grow. And with your teaching, people will. Well done.
I'm currently studying to be a hairdresser and we learn a whole different technique of sectioning! We have five sections. One that goes from the middle of their head to the back and then ear to ear!! We call it the cross!! Do you also use it or is that just a thing that exists in my country? I'm from Sweden btw!
Hey loved the video, very informative. I’m guilty of squeezing the foil. What would you do to a client that came in with the don’t side & wanted to blend it in better ?
The DONT is how we were taught in cosmo school wtf ?!?! Lol! Thank you for this !

@@hairbykristijennings6648 thanks so much, this is super helpful!!
I would say I have definitely made the stripe mistake once and never again lol! 🤣 now I been doing hair for 5 years and I definitely prefer the more tedious method of soft highlights and balayage to the wam bam thank you maam type of foils :3
Exactly! And to be fair, we've all been there!
Great point about using the entire foil!! Makes so much sense. Thank you for doing this great video.
Of course! Thank you for watching!
Absolutely loved this video!! Thank you sooooo much for uploading!
Thanks so much for taking the time to do this. Super helpful. My only criticism would be that the left side was done chunky and the right said was done with fine weaves. Maybe a good comparison would be to do the left side with the same placement as you did but the same size weaves as the right side
I actually did a standard slice, not chunky at all
I can definitely see where the foil was creased, it's such a good Tipp not to do so. I'm going to follow that on my own hair next time I do my highlights. Thanks for that :)
Oh good! Thank you so much for watching!
So simple! you are the best educator!!!! Love your work! Thank you!!!
Oh wow! That means so much, thank you!
I got that same mannequin from Amazon awhile ago and still haven’t used it lol.. it’s interesting that the manufacturer who makes them makes all the pivot point mannequins.. loved the video hope you make us more do vs don’t videos or how to correct the don’t side!
I sure will! Im always wanting suggestions from you guys so I have an idea what you like!
I love love your demonstration and explanation. Very impressive and I am loving the final result!
Very good on explaining the details of foiling - we sometimes forget about details & wonder why things screw up.thanks for showing - I stopped folding my foils on the sides unless I have a part that’s a tiny area..
Hi Kristi.. can you do a video on how you would do highlights on super thin hair??
Dont side is my worst nightmare. It's ok if somebody likes this style. I prefer natural, effortless looking finish. Thank you ever so much for this tutorial ❤️
I mix each quadrant fresh right at my station. My clients love it and they know the processing time is more even.
I like the don't side look. But that is the look I like personally. Great video. ☺️
Really you are the best in telling us abozt the donts. I am from germany and i couldnt find such a good video. Thannkkk you for your help
I'd love to see a video of your pattern for partials vs heavy partials, vs full highlight and heavy highlights and how much you charge for each. I think I've been doing heavy partials for a regular partial price, as far as how many foils I do (compared to other stylists anyway).
Yes me too. I struggle to do partials I always want to put in too many foils
Love to see this too
Hi Kristi, would you please show the whole head with the proper weave highlight technique, thank you so much!
Yes! I before I have a few blonde videos where I foil this way....
Please show a video for sold grey hair with low lights thank you
Great job!! I’m showing this video to my students in hair school tomorrow!! They fold their packets like Christmas presents!!!! 🤦🏼♀️
Oh wow that's so awesome! Thank you so much! I hope it helps!
I love it when you said racing stripes I definitely had tons of those thank you ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Such a good do’s and don’t’s! Thank you for taking the time to do this❣️
Of course!
Like you!
Oh thank you so much for the thoughtful comment! You’re very right, it’s huge for self esteem! Thank you so much for watching!
This was soooo informative. Getting ready to give my frontal some white streaks and this really helps…a lot.
The quote-on-quote “don’t” side isn’t necessarily incorrect. That streaky style is called “chunky highlights” and I’m going to be getting them soon! 😊
Thank you for this video! Many clients encounter stylists who do these don’ts… that’s why they won’t return to a salon. 😢
Thank you!
You are the professional hair designer
Thank you so much for showing us the details of your technique, it's really helpful ! You are the Best!!
Thank you so much for watching!!!
I love the chunky highlights. But my era is early 2000s. I like the dimension with low lights
This is my third time watching this video I can’t thank you enough for all of your content!❤
When the "don't" looks like my hair circa 2003 😆
Yes!! And honestly... it’s kinda coming back!
WOW 🙏🔥
Very helpful for so many people. I have seen so many don't sides through Covid.
Really a huge difference! I love your video
Thank you so much for watching!
Love this video! I would love to see a whole head done on a person with fine hair. I wish I knew where I could get this done on my hair. Unfortunately, every place around here does the “don’t “side😩
Oh geez! I’m sure you could find someone on Instagram... that helps to find a stylist
Yes this! Everywhere does the don’t side!
Heyyy! I love hearing about binge watching! We all start somewhere, we all keep learning !
Best advice ever!! I love the do's and don'ts, you can clearly see the difference! Thank you so much for doing this video!!
Hell no . Then the dark
Hair underneath and the blonde on top lol.
Yes! You should try now that you have your confidence up! Less work for you! Good luck!
I love highlighting boards! I went to school around the same time you did!
Yes! Thank you for watching! I just meant I’ve used Schwarzkopf enough to know how much it will or won’t swell with adding water
Girl you are awesome! I certainly wish I could have you do my hair 💕
That’s so sweet! Thank you!!
Thanks! 😃
Oh yes! Maybe I could do a live video with that. Great suggestion!
Awesome I would love that! Hope you are hanging in there! ❤️❤️❤️
@@hairbykristijennings6648 thank you. So useful.
Watching your videos is gonna make me the best kitchen sink non professional hair do-er on the block
Omg 😂😂😂 cracking up at this!!
I absolutely love your videos. I've learned so many great tips from them. I have to laugh though. Everything on your 'don't' side is pretty much what they taught me to do in beauty School... LOL
Thank you! And honestly, same with me. It's a preference, I think and not that its wrong, I just find most clients don't prefer that way of placement
I’m in cosmo school and I do all the donts 😫😩 that’s how I was shown 😭
Thanks for this! Great tips..I'll be using on Friday
Thanks a lot Kristi, I learning a lot with your videos.
Great Video on foil techniques!
Hey, shit! That sure was me lol thanks a million, I learned so much! Love your personality, keep em up!
Oh me too! Those chunks are definitely making a comeback! Lol
This was a good video 👍 u do see alot of ppl doing the don't side more times then not smh. They need to watch u😊
Brilliant learnt a lot thanku Kristi💕x
Wonderful! Thank you!
Excellent tutorial! Thank you so much. A huge difference. ♥️♥️♥️♥️
How do prefer to do a paint between 🤔. Thanks girl I’m sharing this video with the team❤️ your amazing I appreciate these videos.
I have found that cream lighter puffs up much less than powder and i rarely have any stripes & bleeders.
Hiya Thankyou for this video, what foils are you using please? Also can you do a video on sectioning for full head highlights??
Hello! I’m using framar foils and I don’t really section, I just foil as I go…..
I never laughed so hard, you kill me foil anxiety🥰 Love this channel
Thank you so much for your video. It’s great information. Thanks again
Thank you for watching!
I really truly love the bad side the best!!!!!!!!!! Seriously
Isn't that funny! I love chunkier pieces too! I just know the general public like more blended
The dont side would look just great and grow fine if you give it a smudge with a demi cream based color.
Hey! Did you ever do a video on how to do a modern high contrast?
Hello! Yes, theres a few....
Here is a link to a video and il put together a playlist of modern contrast
ruclips.net/video/clIWfAmxeNs/видео.html
watching this to learn how to do this on myself 🥺😅
me too..lols😂😂😂😂
thank you for this video. I learnt alot...cheers 🎉
Great video. Thank you so much for sharing!!
You are so kind ! Thank you for sharing ❤❤❤❤❤
OMG that is brilliant thanks Kristi
Thank you so much! I appreciate that!
You are a God send i needed this Thank you!!!!
Great educator. Well done.
That don't side is awful. Maybe just a beginner. Fair enough
But we all grow.
Oh yeah! I don't think we called it that but I know what you're talking about
REALLY GREAT DEMO!!!! Thank you for the tips 🤩💇🏼♀️
You're welcome!
Hey loved the video, very informative. I’m guilty of squeezing the foil. What would you do to a client that came in with the don’t side & wanted to blend it in better ?
Yes! Here's a video on how to blend stripy roots and eliminate hard lines
