This song is a bit weird. The fedora and him being nice makes you think it’s about a “nice guy/incel” but the way he acts shows he isn’t malicious or hateful just bad with relationships.
This is the step before nice guy. He's someone who believes he can get the girl by being nice. If he then decided to be embittered by this he'd fit those definitions. Those types tend to have already tried and failed. Yet the, "You'll be happy without me," is him somewhat depressingly accepting it.

I think it is fascinating to see the change in perspective on this song. When it first came out, the comments were filled with people who voiced their sympathy for Jack and said they related to him. But nowadays, with people being more aware of incel culture and r/niceguys making the rounds, impressions of the type of person Jack is have changed dramatically.
Funny because I've seen it happen the other way around. When I discovered the song, people were trashing poor Jack and people relating to him, saying how this sond is the r/niceguys anthem. But now I see a lot more of compassionate comments, not necessarily relating to Jack but trying to help him, or somwhat validating his feelings. People have gone from hating nice guys to actually feeling sorry for them and trying to show them a different perspective.
i was similar to jack in a way. but different. i was a very late bloomer. didnt see anyone as more than a friend until i was 15 and a half. i didnt go and look for relationships. i am also autistic, so i dont notice signs until... a month or two later when i remember it in the shower. not all incels are "bad people" or "neckbeards" some are just a little bit different. now, you _should_ bully the neckbeards who wear fedoras and expect someone to want a relationship for being a decent human being. even now, kindness helps a lot in this world of assholes.
Same, I think I discovered this video around 2014 or 2015-ish and I remember how the comments were so sympathetic towards Jack, it's so interesting how our culture had changed in less than a decade.

I think Jack is a bit different from that stereotype. If anything the lesson is that he wasn't being forward enough, rather than being too much. He was trying to take it slow and careful and it didn't pay off.
Only a bit tho. His "not being forward enough" still comes from the same place: not understanding social cues and not being able to relate to others. And outside of that, he's the same as the stereotype in most other ways.
I think this is a much more sympathetic lens than the typical incel though. He's clearly trying to the best of his ability, but he just finds skills that come easily to others very difficult (which is very true when it comes to relationships). He gets angry at times, but who wouldn't if you thought you were doing everything right? At no point does he seem to come off as especially creepy, he chases a little but not too much. As for the fedora and toothpick, well that comes from the same vein as dyed hair and horn rimmed glasses for radical feminists. The look has been spoiled somewhat by its attachment to a personality.

Here's my takeaway from this song: Jack is a Nice Guy, but doesn't seem to take out frustration on people he's expecting romantic advances from, which makes this facet of his character significantly less problematic. Despite being a Nice Guy, Jack has basically no awareness of sexual "signs", which creates issues in relationships that he DOES manage do cultivate, and ultimately results in their dissolution (by his partners). This will also be true about people approaching him for one night stands. Jack either has low confidence (which women tend to dislike) or wants an asexual relationship (and is terrible at informing his partners of this fact). Jack is very frustrated by all of this and reacts appropriately (anyone who says masturbating to deal with breakups is a problem has clearly never had a breakup). The Narrator urges Jack not to chase after women he broke up with, and to look for other partners, wishing him luck with finding someone who will connect with him better.
People are saying jack is a “nice guy” but they’re saying it like he’s an incel who demands affection for being nice. But in the video, jack is legitimately being “nice” to the girls. He doesn’t demand affection in return, he just wishes they had feelings. Jack isn’t an incel “nice guy” he’s just a genuinely good person, looking for love.
Except the girl did have feelings, the point of the song is that he’s literally a “Nice Guy”. He was just so Nice that he missed the signs that she was flirting with him. In the beginning of the song it established that he thinks simply being “Nice” would get him the girl. The song is about Jack being a static character, never growing out of “Be nice to her” phase.

Well, in my case, I'm trying to find another guy. Mainly for the reason that I never had a strong loving figure in my life who showed me compassion. My father has a disorder, aspergers, that doesn't let him feel the same way others do, and my mother takes medicine for depression, so she ends up being less emotional and more logical. I haven't been hugged in three years, and I have no older siblings. I really have no one to look to, and I'm afraid of facing the open world any more without having someone there to comfort me.
Honestly, I interpreted this song as a guy and a girl who used to date, but when the guy didn’t really push further into the relationship (“She took her skirt off, he didn’t notice” really shows how it seemed like he wasn’t ready for sex), she ended up breaking things off with him. This is further shown with the ending, where it sounds like he’s desperately trying to hold onto the relationship, but realizes that it’s pointless, and that he’s lost her. In my opinion, the song is a story about a couple who ended up splitting, and the guy trying and failing to get another girlfriend. The song lyrics constantly mock him, which could be an indicator of low self esteem. Jack is not the bad guy, he’s just someone who didn’t want to rush into things to fast, and is now beating himself up over it.

Total Rohem it's a stereotype that people who wear fedoras are often douches, because they always blame other people for their perma virgin status and think they get laid just by being nice to girls. They often consider themselves as "the nice guys" but in reality they start insulting girls when they find out they aren't interested in sex. I personally think the hat itself isn't really that bad or ugly looking, but I would never wear one because of the negative stigma surrounding it (and also because it looks ugly on me).

The different interpretations of this song is Amazing. Is Jack a loser who girls shouldn’t waste their time dating, or is he a lost soul trying to find love. Yes he wears a fedora and has a throw pillow from his favorite show, but does that make him a loser, or does it make him comfortable in is own skin. Should being nice get you the girl? Being nice is hardly a bad thing, but, is being nice bad when there is other motives behind it? Perhaps he did notice her taking her skirt off and didn’t act out of respect, or, he was to nervous. If he was to nervous does that make him a loser for not being good with girls, or does that mean the girl pushed him to fast. Truely an amazing song that everyone can relate to.

I think he's not supposed to be sympathized with, but more rather a message of what not to think.

littleblueclovers So yeah it's super easy to demonize Jack. Jack however isn't bad, more specifically the line that says he she wanted a kiss and he gave her a hug. What this says is jack is hung up the idea that she wouldn't want him so he doesn't make the moves he should. That the things he does that are respectful and therefore are what she wants. Jack isn't trying to be nice because he wants poon. Jack is nice because he wants a relationship which he attributes as sex on certain levels. Jack is doing the things he believes will make her like him. It's purely a failure on the part of his interpersonal education. The problem is girls don't know what they want until they are older. They say things like they want someone nice but that's not the whole story. They want someone they get along with that is interesting just like any guy. Moral of the story be interesting.

It's trying to say that you shouldn't just think being nice will get you the girl, that you should keep an eye out for the signs, and that if it fails, you should just move on. One interesting comment pointed out that Jack may be asexual, this might be true, one can be asexual and yet romantic, thus why his emphasis is on being romantic and missing the signs she wants to have sex. This in no way makes Jack a bad guy. Take this as you will, this is just my opinion of Jack and the girls and I wanted to try my best to maybe give a different point of view for both sides :) I notice how everyone either calls Jack an asshole or the girls assholes, but try to see these characters in this way: Jack is just a lonely guy that wants to have his happily ever after. He seems to live a lonely life, that can make someone down and whatnot. He just wants that special someone so he won't be so lonely and a "loser" like he sees himself as. He wants his happily ever after, which is something that everyone wants. I know a lot of guys that are like this, lonely and to the point that they are practically searching for their special someone when that's just something that happens with time. They get to the point of desperation that they believe that any kind gesture they do for a girl is the start of romantic feelings and when they are rejected, they will get upset, sometimes even thinking it's the girls fault and thinking they are a "bitch" or something. This doesn't make him an asshole, it just shows how desperate he has become for the special person and how lonely he really is, plus we're human, we aren't perfect (don't act like you haven't thought of someone as an asshole yourself for something similar like this). The girls seem to have found an interest at Jack at some point, but they also date because they want either to progress or to just fuck Jack, but the problem is that Jack seems to also be naive about dating as well, not even realizing that his previous lovers wanted to progress the relationship and take an extra step (even if that extra step was sex cause, you know, taking your skirt off can be a pretty obvious sign). He treated them the same as usual and didn't go farther in their relationship, which is important to do when dating someone. That's what makes dating and relationships fun: you guys are together and with time you progress and see how far you go and what more you both do with it. Jack didn't do this, and the girls got fed up and left to find someone that will take a relationship more seriously. I see relatings from both sides of the spectrum. I've had friends that wanted relationships like Jack did, but they would get to the point that they were practically looking for it instead of just letting things happen, to the point that they would assume that simple nice gestures that people should do for anybody can lead to something more. These friends would even become so desperate that they would depress themselves from it, a few even contemplating stuff like suicide just because they thought they would never find the one. Meanwhile, the girls want to progress in relationships, they don't want to stay in the same point forever. I personally can relate to this because I've dated guys that wold never make a single move to progress in the relationship. I'm not saying I wanted sex, but I never even got to make out or cuddle my exes after months of dating and, yeah, it can be pretty exhausting when they act oblivious or you try to make the move yourself every single time. There has to be effort from both parties, otherwise it won't work out.

to me it sounds like the narrator is taunting him, but also trying to give him genuine advice as well. instead of being prideful and masking his sorrow with anger, he should just accept that not everyone is going to like him back, and admit she doesn't want him. go find another; one who you can actually see yourself getting along with, rather than wasting your life away going after someone whose presence merely boosts your ego. the last one is a stretch. just my assumption of what he could be going for, and what i assume it'd lead to, based on my own experience.

I think it is fascinating to see the change in perspective on this song. When it first came out, the comments were filled with people who voiced their sympathy for Jack and said they related to him.
But nowadays, with people being more aware of incel culture and r/niceguys making the rounds, impressions of the type of person Jack is have changed dramatically.
Funny because I've seen it happen the other way around. When I discovered the song, people were trashing poor Jack and people relating to him, saying how this sond is the r/niceguys anthem. But now I see a lot more of compassionate comments, not necessarily relating to Jack but trying to help him, or somwhat validating his feelings. People have gone from hating nice guys to actually feeling sorry for them and trying to show them a different perspective.
i was similar to jack in a way. but different. i was a very late bloomer. didnt see anyone as more than a friend until i was 15 and a half. i didnt go and look for relationships. i am also autistic, so i dont notice signs until... a month or two later when i remember it in the shower.

I think Jack is a bit different from that stereotype. If anything the lesson is that he wasn't being forward enough, rather than being too much. He was trying to take it slow and careful and it didn't pay off.
Only a bit tho. His "not being forward enough" still comes from the same place: not understanding social cues and not being able to relate to others. And outside of that, he's the same as the stereotype in most other ways.
I think this is a much more sympathetic lens than the typical incel though. He's clearly trying to the best of his ability, but he just finds skills that come easily to others very difficult (which is very true when it comes to relationships). He gets angry at times, but who wouldn't if you thought you were doing everything right? At no point does he seem to come off as especially creepy, he chases a little but not too much. As for the fedora and toothpick, well that comes from the same vein as dyed hair and horn rimmed glasses for radical feminists. The look has been spoiled somewhat by its attachment to a personality.

Here's my takeaway from this song:
Jack is a Nice Guy, but doesn't seem to take out frustration on people he's expecting romantic advances from, which makes this facet of his character significantly less problematic.
Despite being a Nice Guy, Jack has basically no awareness of sexual "signs", which creates issues in relationships that he DOES manage do cultivate, and ultimately results in their dissolution (by his partners). This will also be true about people approaching him for one night stands.
Jack either has low confidence (which women tend to dislike) or wants an asexual relationship (and is terrible at informing his partners of this fact).
Jack is very frustrated by all of this and reacts appropriately (anyone who says masturbating to deal with breakups is a problem has clearly never had a breakup).
The Narrator urges Jack not to chase after women he broke up with, and to look for other partners, wishing him luck with finding someone who will connect with him better.
The point of him missing sexual signs is the fact jack wants a meaningful relationship yet the girl seems to only want a hookup

Honestly, I interpreted this song as a guy and a girl who used to date, but when the guy didn’t really push further into the relationship (“She took her skirt off, he didn’t notice” really shows how it seemed like he wasn’t ready for sex), she ended up breaking things off with him.
This is further shown with the ending, where it sounds like he’s desperately trying to hold onto the relationship, but realizes that it’s pointless, and that he’s lost her.

The different interpretations of this song is Amazing. Is Jack a loser who girls shouldn’t waste their time dating, or is he a lost soul trying to find love. What this says is jack is hung up the idea that she wouldn't want him so he doesn't make the moves he should. That the things he does that are respectful and therefore are what she wants. Jack isn't trying to be nice because he wants poon. Jack is nice because he wants a relationship which he attributes as sex on certain levels. Jack is doing the things he believes will make her like him. It's purely a failure on the part of his interpersonal education. The problem is girls don't know what they want until they are older. They say things like they want someone nice but that's not the whole story. They want someone they get along with that is interesting just like any guy. Moral of the story be interesting.

Hm, I think you missed the meaning of the song. It's trying to say that you shouldn't just think being nice will get you the girl, that you should keep an eye out for the signs, and that if it fails, you should just move on.

This is obviously a song about mismatched expectations. Jack wants a LTR, she wants a ONS, (nothing wrong with either) however, he is somehow the one to blame (according the comments in this video for not matching his expectations to hers and parts of the video itself) this is very much in line with the current dating scene.
One interesting comment pointed out that Jack may be asexual, this might be true, one can be asexual and yet romantic, thus why his emphasis is on being romantic and missing the signs she wants to have sex. The lyrics mentions rubbing one out out of frustration more likely, as even for asexual people, masturbation can simply a way to release stress, much like, hell, a massage would be. This in no way makes Jack a bad guy.
A few other comments pointed out that Jack, like many guys, is afraid to escalate, low confidence; might have noticed the signs but didn't feel confident enough to act on them. This in no way makes Jack a bad guy.

Take this as you will, this is just my opinion of Jack and the girls and I wanted to try my best to maybe give a different point of view for both sides :)
I notice how everyone either calls Jack an asshole or the girls assholes, but try to see these characters in this way:
Jack is just a lonely guy that wants to have his happily ever after. He seems to live a lonely life, that can make someone down and whatnot. He just wants that special someone so he won't be so lonely and a "loser" like he sees himself as. He wants his happily ever after, which is something that everyone wants. I know a lot of guys that are like this, lonely and to the point that they are practically searching for their special someone when that's just something that happens with time. They get to the point of desperation that they believe that any kind gesture they do for a girl is the start of romantic feelings and when they are rejected, they will get upset, sometimes even thinking it's the girls fault and thinking they are a "bitch" or something. This doesn't make him an asshole, it just shows how desperate he has become for the special person and how lonely he really is, plus we're human, we aren't perfect (don't act like you haven't thought of someone as an asshole yourself for something similar like this).
The girls seem to have found an interest at Jack at some point, but they also date because they want either to progress or to just fuck Jack, but the problem is that Jack seems to also be naive about dating as well, not even realizing that his previous lovers wanted to progress the relationship and take an extra step (even if that extra step was sex cause, you know, taking your skirt off can be a pretty obvious sign). He treated them the same as usual and didn't go farther in their relationship, which is important to do when dating someone. That's what makes dating and relationships fun: you guys are together and with time you progress and see how far you go and what more you both do with it. Jack didn't do this, and the girls got fed up and left to find someone that will take a relationship more seriously.
I see relatings from both sides of the spectrum. I've had friends that wanted relationships like Jack did, but they would get to the point that they were practically looking for it instead of just letting things happen, to the point that they would assume that simple nice gestures that people should do for anybody can lead to something more. These friends would even become so desperate that they would depress themselves from it, a few even contemplating stuff like suicide just because they thought they would never find the one. Meanwhile, the girls want to progress in relationships, they don't want to stay in the same point forever. I personally can relate to this because I've dated guys that wold never make a single move to progress in the relationship. I'm not saying I wanted sex, but I never even got to make out or cuddle my exes after months of dating and, yeah, it can be pretty exhausting when they act oblivious or you try to make the move yourself every single time. There has to be effort from both parties, otherwise it won't work out.
