Allow me to be frank as a native Chiniase:
Perhaps those who are not familiar with Chinese culture might not understand the plot of this game from the very beginning.
So, let me help you analyze it here.
At 3:49, Erlang Shen mentions "a defeated subordinate doesn't want to fight again," subtly referring to the past when the Great Sage was tricked and defeated. It was not a glorious moment for him, and it might be a reminder to the Great Sage that the Heavenly Court has set a trap, just like last time.
At 4:26, Erlang Shen talks about "they" wanting to destroy the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit, using "they" instead of "we" twice, clearly creating a distance. First, it's to force the Great Sage to act without leaving him a way out; if he surrenders, it will only be worse. Second, during the fight, he's looking for a way for the Great Sage to survive, allowing him to escape, which leads to the scene
At 8:11 where he sweeps the others away, and
At 8:46 where he has a chance to sneak attack with an axe but deliberately warns the Great Sage instead. During the fight, he brings up the immortality of the Buddha's position, hoping the Great Sage will preserve his life.
At 6:54, the Great Sage mentions that "the blade is dull," wanting Erlang Shen to stop considering how to protect him and to act ruthlessly as needed.
At 9:03, Wukong says "the sunlight is dazzling," realizing that the Buddhas of the Spirit Mountain are behind him, and immediately reacts by transforming and flying away. He didn't expect that last time he was captured because the Grand Pure One took advantage of their fight to sneak attack with the Vajra ring; this time, he was directly trapped by the Golden Headband spell (so it seems it should be the influence of the Spirit Mountain's power).
In the original book, Erlang Shen himself is also dissatisfied with the Heavenly Court's tactics and "obeys the tune but not the call" to the Jade Emperor, but he has no choice. According to the story, Erlang Shen's thoughts here should be complex.

Why does the story of Sun Wukong remain ever-popular in China?
The key lies in the fact that the Great Sage Equal to Heaven is not just a naturally gifted monkey with extraordinary abilities. What he represents is a rebellion against power and injustice, and a story about freedom, family, and the desire to control one's own destiny.
Even if you are born from a divine stone that mends the heavens, master the seventy-two transformations, possess an indestructible body, and wield the Ruyi Jingu Bang, you are not merely a lone monkey.
When faced with the threats and oppressions of society and life, do you have the courage to stand up and never bow down?
So, the game begins with Sun Wukong after his journey to the West, unwilling to be a puppet of the Heavenly Court or the Spirit Mountain, wishing only to be with his monkey kin in the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit. Yet, this is exactly what the powers that be cannot tolerate, which is why the Heavenly Court's forces are determined to exterminate the monkeys of the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit, cutting off Sun Wukong's thoughts and hopes.
What the Heavenly Court or the Spirit Mountain wants is not a monkey with great abilities, but a story where no matter how formidable the demon monkey is, he can only be our puppet, fetching scriptures for us, and the purpose of this story is to let all beings with a rebellious spirit know that no matter how powerful you are, you must obediently join us in corruption to continue to exist in this society.
I also like a phrase from the game's creator:
"Embarking on the journey to fetch the scriptures is more important than arriving at the Spirit Mountain."
So, friends, I hope you can all become the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, unafraid of the eighty-one trials, always walking on your own path, and becoming the hero of your own life!
If you considered Wu-Kong as God-father you may have a better understanding of the whole story of the 《Black Myth Wu-Kong》. And the Orginal Books 《Monkey》 Actually are more than the game's concept. I checked today's game story found out the game's background are more close to the novel 《悟空传》 writed by 今何在。but original 《Monkey》 are more than these blackView of decipher even thoung i feel that more close to reality. orginal 《Monkey》 are talked more about "Having gone through hardships, understanding all beings, thus achieving clarity of mind and realization of one's true nature, and therefore becoming a Buddha." that's what called "cultivation". but i'm a young man so i liked more 《悟空传》 cause it talked about more about love and spirit of rebellion. Maybe as time goes by i'd like the original book more
Thanks for clarifying. I thought they did Erlang Shen dirty in the intro by making him the opposite of what he was. I was always intrigued by Monkey king and Yang Jian (Erlong Shen) relationship as rivals who respect one another.

this makes a good sense of what the game's setting is.
As a native Chinese, it makes me chuckle when I saw the headless bard showing up at the beginning scene of chapter 2, and he sang in "秦腔" (fold song using Shan Xi region dialect, which has a very distinct flavour) [Correction: pointed out by fellow youtubers that it was actually 陕北说书， from northern Shaan Xi region], and when he speaks (due to English dubbing) he speaks with a Scottish accent. I couldn't stop myself from thinking that the game creators are somehow drawing cultural parallel inspirations.

That Erlang is a famous demi-god in Chinese mythology, his mother was the Jade Emperor’s sister and his father was a mortal, Yang Tianyou. He has a mortal name called Yang Jian, and Erlang-Shen is his god name.
With his talent, Erlang became powerful above most gods, however his mother was punished and sealed under a mountain for uniting with a lowly mortal. He is known for saving his mother by cleaving the entire mountain open with a great axe (the one we saw in the game) and fought off everyone who stood in his way. After that, he overcame countless tasks and challenges and earned a rightful place in Tianting (The Heaven Court), as the three-eye warrior and guardian of heaven at his uncle, the Jade Emperor’s side.
Also, he keeps a hound called Xiaotian (name means Howling at the Sky).
Sun Wukong always make fun of him, calling him nephew because Wukong is “equal of heaven”, and Yang Jian usually don’t give a Fxxk.
The funny thing was, Erlang was literally Wukong's heavenly counterpart, being the very first being he ever encountered that can rival him in every aspect - personality aside, of course.

The second part you described about saving mum with mountain splitting axe is the story of Chen Xiang, Er Lang Shen's nephew. He fought against Er Lang. Did the two stories get merged or something?

That intro definitely sets very high expectations for both the story and the boss segments i hope it doesn't just become stale
Currently on the second chapter, and I can tell you is that the game involves grinding with new art displays. Such as drawing stories for the villains and secret bosses even some providing you new abilities or transformations. I don’t like any souls games yet I love this.
That intro is freaking amazing! This dude just flies head first into the most bad@$$ fight with no fear and pure arrogance. I knew a little about this story before hand and they nailed it!

Chapter 1 is referenced the story that the disaster that the Sanzang and Wukong faced during their stay in Guanyin Monastery. Abbot Jin Chi was a fanatic of kasayas and he targeted Sanzang's precious Jinlan Kasaya. Jinlan Kasaya was embedded Seven Jewels and it has magical power that keep Sanzang from any kinds of danger. Therefore, Abbot Jin Chi attempted to murder Sanzang and snatch that Kasaya for himself by setting fire on Sanzang's dorm. However, Wukong knew what he's planning and borrowed the Anti-Fire Lid from King Guangmu in the heaven. Wukong used that Lid to protect Sanzang's dorm from fire and the fire spread out to the rest of the monastery. Jin Chi lost everything but the Jinlan Kasaya got stolen by the Black Bear demon. Wukong seeked Guanyin's help to takedown Black Bear. Eventually, Black Bear surrendered and returned the Kasaya to Sanzang and he became the guardian of Guanyin's mountain.
Truee! I remember when Sanzang punished Wukong for setting fire to the monastery, thinking he was being evil again haha
It's really sad and tragic and the animation Cutscenes and picture at the end of ch1 depicts sun wukong saving his master and elder jinchi of his greed and paranoia wanted the Kasaya no matter his temple got burned.
the way MK played during the intro made me think this is his 2nd playthrough of the game like he played through the game once off camera to get some practice
Erlang, you've never bested Sun Wukong. Quit dreaming! This guy had help and even then Sun Wukong was only temporarily subdued. They couldn't kill him even if they tried.
Wu Kong had to flee away from him in the novel. I would say that he sure have the upperhand over Wu Kong. Both are protagonists in their storyline, and they did not intent on fighting to kill each other so I guess we would never know the final result. :p
@@duongtieuta223 nope he never flee from him he just playing cat and mouse with erlang ,wukong even take time to come to erlang temple and wreck havoc in it and they keep fighting forever and the jade empoir see this and think erlang cant beat him so he order another god to help erlang that is why wukong get capture but they cant kill him .
Erlang shen is powerful but even here a mcguffin with the headband caused Wukong to get distracted with pain mid fight, and Laotzu used some diamond rope thing to trap Sun Wukong the last time he fought Erlang shen, so yeah Wukong is still technically stronger, plus even if the gods somehow destroyed his mortal body he wouldn't really be dead for good and would live on in spirit due to his layers of immortality.
can someone explain to me what the heck happened at 10:25? Imho, that felt so weird and anticlimatic - such a bad ending to a really epic intro-fight.
@@15thMonkey The golden headband is a tool they use to control him because of his mischievous behavior during his "Journey To The West" to fetch the Buddha scripture. Originally, it was placed in inside a hat which was given by Guanyin to Tang Sanzang (Sun Wukong's monk master). She knew Sun Wukong would eventually put it on because he's a very curious monkey.
It is unclear if it actually came off when he became the "victorious" Fighting Buddha. Apparently in this game, it never did. It means if someone knew about the chant, then that person can effectively induce an extreme headache to Sun Wukong by chanting the chant.
The moment I saw the trailer years ago, you were the first person that came to mind that I really wanted to watch the gameplay from. Now that the time is here, I couldn’t be more exited!

As a Chinese, I grew up reading Journey to the West. It is necessary for me to briefly introduce the complicated relationship between Monkey King and Erlang God to my foreign friends. In fact, Sun Wukong's life was given by Erlang Shen. When he was causing chaos in the Heavenly Palace, he was stuffed into the alchemy furnace by the Supreme Lord and quickly turned into water. At this critical moment of life and death, Erlang Shen secretly told Sun Wukong that there was a direction in the alchemy furnace with the word "wind" written on it, which could not be burned and was the escape door. Sun Wukong escaped as a result. It's not that Erlang Shen is kind, he just can't stand the filthy behavior of the gods. He hopes to personally defeat the monkeys with his own hands. @user-tq2np4so4j the monkey story is like this: the monkey just cannot be melted/destroyed whatever is the length of time he is put in the furnace. Meaning he is indestructible which contradicts your own monkey story.

Westerner not know about chinese tale much because they core culture are diffirent, but i think the main reason is no properly translation, like watching some stephen chow movie with english subtitles and not know chinese

A lot of skills and abilities naming just lose something after translation. you can only gets it if you are a native speaker, and translation feels like explaining the joke. I won't say they didn't do a good job in translation, it's just two very different languages and cultures. I hope westerners can still enjoy the game without knowing all the culture references.

Idk what that guy is talking about man, this game is fucking fire, I’m not Chinese but Journey to the West is one of my favorite stories, and I’m so very grateful to the Chinese developers for making the story into a game, it’s a dream come true for me!
This is the most visually stunning game to date IMO. The cloud effects in the first fight are basically the best thing I've ever seen
Black myth wukong, Elden ring, god of war, and red dead redemption all have very amazing graphics

@@lovely1762 It'd be silly for him to deny it, seeing that Goku literally translates to Wukong in Chinese (even the kanjis are identical to the Chinese characters), and only people not familiar with the Monkey King would fail to see the reference in Goku's character design and back story. Doesn't diminish Dragon Ball in anyway though (in my opinion).

every East Asian (okay maybe not those who grew up in the West) knows that... The Journey to the West is a very famous classical novel. Kinda like Greek mythology in the (European) West.

I feel like this is one of those situations where its better to use the native language and just read the subtitles.

They were not smoking anything, the legend of sun wukong was inspired from the hindu deity Hanuman, also the entire story of journey to the west and travelling to "buddha's realm" is them travelling to India

What do you think about the opening scene of Wukong and Yang Jian fighting? I was very disappointed that I didn't get to see the army of heaven beating drums and blowing trumpets to show their power, along with the cheers of the army cheering for their general, this created a very epic scene like in the feudal war movies or the Three Kingdoms movie that I have seen, in the game the army just stood still and lifeless before being thrown away by the power of Wukong and Yang Jian, this is completely meaningless and nonsense, I am Vietnamese and right at that moment to me it was a huge minus point
Yang Jian is a very calm man, humble, and kindness he is not acting big talk like that in game. And If he open his third eyes Wukong and Yang Jian have the same power, no matter how they fight they can't kill each other due to both super strong power
You need to understand journey to the west is written in the Northern Song Dynasty period and its one of the 1st Chinese fantasy frictional novels along side with the romance of 3 kingdom. While there is a person call Tang San Zang, rest of the crew are pure Chinese fantasy.
As for why yang Jian is portrayed as a boastful character is the author “disgust” with that period of northern song. As that period while the kingdom is wealthy, majority of the population is very superstitious and highly engaged in religious worshipping and this is also highly encouraged by the imperial court government in Kaifeng

Scenery in this game was film from 36 different attractions in China, 27 of which are located in Shanxi Province.
Searches and bookings for these attractions have more doubled in China. Attractions and local governments are also geared up for the upcoming wave of tourism

As a Chinese, I agree with that, and without talking the gameplay, both two games have created a new main character who kills the characters in traditional story(Greek mythology, Chinese mythology), which is a very disruptive setting😂But this game is very important to us, it's the first 3A-level game and I am done with the fking money-recharging online games in China.

This game started like how i expected the ending of a game, movie or series to end, very epic. I never saw more than a teaser off Wukong but i was sucked in like a great movie i couldnt stop watching

It's just a kind reminder, all the skills Wukong uses can be found in the novel Journey to the West, immobilization, transformation, multi-form, and even the stick that can grow bigger or smaller. So it's not copying any games, instead, some games and cartoons were inspired by that novel.
I truly prefer to just read subtitles and have the dialogues in Chinese. I mean, the lip sync is not even there for the English voices, and its sounds goofy af

I don't necessarily like Soulslike games so I'm debating whether or not to get this. I've been following development for a while now and I'm definitely tempted.
It's not a soulslike, i mean it has some soulslike elements but it's more like god of war than a soulslike
It's simpler than soulslike games, just give it a try
The camera angles and the healthbars is the only thing this game shares with any souls game. The combat is hack and slash,there are abilities, the game doesn't work like a platformer but rather a linear experience from point a to b(I mean there are literal invisible walls),there aren't any builds or stats, the difficulty seem pretty standard and thankfully the storytelling seems strong rather than the lore based system soul games have. I personally I am relieved to see that this is in fact not a soulslike since those kind of kind game have been in abundance lately
I played this game then i uninstalled. I used to game like god of war. But for wukong very hard for me to even pass 1 boss. I just want to enjoy the story

Graphics look great. the only thing that worries me is the gameplay. To me it seemed lacking. Follow the same narrow path, no exploring. And kill 2 enemies in different spots along that path and eventually reach a boss. It has a GOW vibe for sure. The large chest being pushed open looked like GOW, but it had much more exploring involved.

Yeah it definitely does have that older gow game build going on. But I am guessing you are referring to the new ones cause the old one had zero exploration just collectables
It's not the game but the MK playing the game lol🤣. He's not that skilled and never explores. You're supposed to explore, they're a crap ton of hidden levels in the game. Most people don't explore while playing
The game feel empty in term of normal enemy encounter. Feel more like boss rush than anything.
The story line is not only about gaming, its about buddism pholosophy, its like a educational book exists as a interactive game
