*EDIT: The part about the father and son of stones being Shigandang and the Stone Vanguard is incorrect*, they appear to be the evil guai and a strong guard. I’ll correct this in the next video! Ok real question: I want to improve how I pronounce Chinese names and the language in general... Anyone have any tips? Also thank you so much for watching! See you in Chapter 3!
While studying mythology, I personally watch Chinese, Japanese, German and depending on the country and language I would watch a video explaining the Lore. Listening to the pronunciation of how they say it and repeating it myself.
The tone of how you pronounce words are pretty important in Chinese, might feel awkward at first but onces you get used to it makes a huge difference. its not that easy tho imo, my mum still laugh at me when i say chinese word in the wrong tone .-.
Find the Chinese names on the BMW wiki, copy the original name into google translate and see how Google pronounces the word and try to mimic it, it works for most languages for me lol
10:06 Chinese here. The headless guy is not singing in standard mandarin, but with a strong northern accent of that region. Though this is obvious to all chinese audiences, it may not be the case for westerners. So I think that's why Game Science deliberately chose a scottish accent which is also a "northern accent" for the english version, to give a similar vibe.
@@Kodiakhunter the wording of this game in general is somewhat different from daily spoken mandarin, nor is it pure ancient chinese, but somewhere in between. Accent wise Lingi speaks in mandarin but sings in dialect. It would be too hard for average chinese to understand the semi-ancient script spoken in a dialect without any subtitles. I think that's why they let Lingi speaks in mandarin eventually.
The swordman's story is heartbreaking. He just wanted to save his boy. We know his boy was a very cheerful kid. As a spirit, he only speaks all the nice memories he had at the village.
Sadly not so much, the child, in death, was an almost perfect description of a "tiger's acolyte". He intentionally, or unintentionally, led you down the well, where the mad tiger could claim another life.
A lot of these enemies don’t seem like bad guys. Sure a lot of them do horrible things, but a lot of them also do very good things, like the yellow wind sage saving the villagers from the massive beetle and sparing a lot of his enemies after they attacked him. The tiger brothers too, the eldest brother had a moral code to protect and not hurt the innocent, and the younger one helped cure a sick child. Very cool how complicated and deep their individual stories are.
So many great tales from chapter 2, I found the story of the father swordsman and his son very touching. At first I just assumed that the child was consumed by the tiger, little did I know that there was quite a twist. The author also knew what the audience would think when the tiger gave the gourd to the child. Classic mis-direct in storytelling from 400 years ago.
and the destined one was taken it back as well. the coffin opening animation is the same for all coffin chests, expect for that one. there was a clear shock and pause when the coffin first opened. he took some time to dust off the coffin before opening it as well, hinting he might know whats in it already.
Interesting that every character in this chapter displays both good and evil characteristics. The yellow wind sage being forgiving and seemed to actually care enough to help the people but scheming and his help often meant he gained more power somehow The bodhisattva being kind but vengeful The elder tiger bro being a good leader, turned to eating rat people out of spite The younger bro having compassion for the child but needing flesh to live, consumes the tricked villagers
He does in the sense of it quelling his vengeance. He's imagining himself eating the sage every time he eats a rat guai. Basically the Black Myth Wukong equivalent of stress eating lol.
Hi, Chinese here, fist of all thank you so much for doing the heavy lifting, I appreciate that you let many people recognize how good the plot is in BMW. Also, I’d like to share some of my thoughts and insights on what went through the Yellow Sage’s mind from start to finish. 1. When he was caught stealing lamp oil from Lingshan, the Sage had no choice but to obey Buddha LingJi. From the start, he didn't like Buddha LingJi. 2. The Sage believed that by doing good deeds for humanity, he could gain recognition or even a position in the Celestial Court. However, after helping people during the Yellow Wind incident, LingJi punished those who trusted the Sage. Disheartened by this, the Sage left, feeling deeply disappointed. 3. After being defeated by Wukong and LingJi during the Journey to the West, the Sage once again found himself with no choice but to obey Buddha LingJi. At this point, he pretty much lost hope and probably accepted his fate. 3. Later, during a battle that killed Wukong, the Sage obtained a piece of relic. Seeing an opportunity to gain power, the Sage, fueled by anger, decapitated LingJi and fled with both the relic and the head. He believed that, with LingJi's head, he could've consumed the relic and became as powerful as Wukong-so powerful that even the Celestial Court would have to grant him a position. 4. The head of LingJi, in my opinion, had a strange effect on the Sage and everyone who is gaining it. Once the Sage obtained it, he no longer cared about those who worshipped him. He ordered Tiger Vanguard and Stone Vanguard to guard the entrance to his valley, locked himself away, and began practicing with the intent of consuming the relic. This led to environmental destruction, and Tiger Vanguard even started eating many rats, but the Sage didn't care. Notably, when LingJi became the headless monk, he actually did a lot of good for the villagers. But after reattaching his head, he never opened his eyes again and reverted to his previous behavior, embodying the idea that becoming a Buddha or something exalted often leads to neglecting ordinary people's life/needs. 5. In many ways, the Sage was very similar to Wukong. Both possessed tremendous power and sought recognition from the Celestial Court. Wukong was fortunate enough to achieve that, although he was eventually restrained and attempted to break free. The Sage, however, was unlucky and became the kind of person he despised. This explains his dialogues during repeated battles with the Destined One-the Sage knew he was in the wrong thing and wished for the Destined One to end his suffering.
I grown up watching journey to the west, the 86 version, even consider myself well versed in it, but your deep knowledge in both story and culture amazed me, your explanation of Yauguai is better than anything I could came up with for years!
Why Scottish accent: The original Chienese is sung with northern Chinese dialect, and the style is also northern. So it should pick a well-known and well-historical-feeded English accent, then Scottish is choosen.
i think it would be a great idea to do a wrap up video at the end with minor corrections, or reexamining previous bosses with the knowledge of later ones. great vid!
I find this deeper story so fascinating. This gives a great depth to such a fantastic game. I love your video it gives such a deep respect to the creators of this masterpiece piece
Thank ypu for this series,. I'm learning a lot already, and if you missed a point, it's OK. you give it your best shot so far and thanks to all the people who comment and add extra information or correction.
and besides, I want to correct the story about Guangmou in Chapter 1. In fact, Guangmou had resented Elden Jinchi for a long time, so after hearing about Guangzhi's plan, he took advantage of the fire to let Sun Wukong get rid of Elden Jinchi. the portraits described:"Guangmou glimpsed an untamed malice in the monkey's eyes--a hunger for vengeance.Building on Guangzhi's gambit,Guangmou goaed and prodded, weaving a merciless plot that left no room for escape." and"the world harbors such petty souls, capable of ensnaring the lofty and vanquishing them with cunning plots.Perhaps this is what is meant by'slaying with a borrowed blade'." this guy is just lived up to his name--wise strategy, but after all, it's just some little tricks, lead the fire to himself one day in the future.
The fighting styles of Guangzhi and Guangmou also correspond to a Chinese idiom, "fanning the flames(煽风点火)," which literally means fanning the wind and lighting a fire, and metaphorically refers to inciting others to do evil.
I absolutely loved BMW. My one issue was never understanding anything going on. this video solves that problem, and makes what i already enjoyed more fun to revise after learning all this. is also shows how great the developers were to be so lore accurate. W vid (also why tf is this chapter so dark bro)
25:56 this means the fight with the sage against the beetlr happens AFTER meeting Sun Wukong because Luigi still had the wind tamer orb thingy. And after the fight, the destined one claims it.
This is incorrect because Tiger Vangard (the original) was still alive when the Yellow Wind Sage bested Fuban. In JTTW, Tiger Vangard was killed by Wukong and Bajie before they fought the Yellow Rat
Theres also a question where if the sun sets and causing kid killing shockwave natural? Since the country must exist before that event as people will not settle at a place which their kid are risk every sunset. Seeing what the celestials does in this n every chapter, its likely that it is the celestial creating disaster and show up as saviour so people worship them, when the people stops worshipping, disaster strikes until its corrected. And the yellow rat guai also stated that he wanted to create a place where his kind can live like normal and not persecuted thus the "rat revering edict". From lingi words, he believed guai should be guai since they are born lower, disrupting the social class and disaster will follow, while its ironic as disaster is caused by him(the upper/governing class, celestials) to enforce this ideology. The fun part of rhis chapter is u feel like a hero of justice defeating monster here n there , then u read the lore n u realise u r the Empire's hero killing rebel alliance.
think about doaism, everything in balance and in its place. In other words humans shouldnt live with guai and humans should worship celestials, Even though it was just, the yellow sage actions went agaisnt the order of things hence was considered evil.
Just finished this chapter and had zero clue the secret area was in the past! It didn’t make sense to me that you had to help the sage!! Great videos, can’t wait for more!!
I hope to add a little bit of detail/ information about the Tiger Acolytes. The child of the "Tiger Acolytes" boss is actually also a tiger acolyte. The name Tiger Acolytes, or "虎伥,” actually originates from ancient Chinese mythology. In mythology, the tiger would trap the ghosts of humans it eaten and turn those ghosts into its paws-- "伥鬼“(in some versions of the mythology, threaten them to become its paws or otherwise their souls would be trapped by the tiger forever.) The tiger acolytes(虎伥) would show up in the evening and trick those passers-by into the territory of the tiger so that the tiger could eat them. They would also disarm traps for the tiger so that the tiger could avoid hunters. The mythology later developed into a Chinese idiom--"为虎作伥“ (usually translated as "play the jackal to the tiger"), the idiom is used to scold those scumbags that were hurt by evil but would turn their ways to help evil and harm the innocent. One thing that is worth noting is that in the original mythology, the tiger acolytes (虎伥)are ghosts, but the Tiger Acolyte boss we fought in game is alive. If you finished the Mad Tiger secret mission, you might notice something rather interesting. At the last step of the mission, the ghost of the child would trick the destined one into jumping into the well where the Mad Tiger hides so that the Mad Tiger could devour the destined one, just like what his father did with the villagers. The child actually became a more lore-accurate tiger acolyte than his father after becoming a ghost, thus making both the father and son tiger acolytes.
It is also worth mentioning that the child and the Mad Tiger actually formed quite a strong and positive emotional bond. The Mad Tiger boss went completely mad and became the Mad Tiger we see in-game after realizing the child was dead. It is presumed that this is the exact reason for the recovered mad tiger to continue to trap itself in the well: after losing the only friend it made, the Mad Tiger lost all expectation for the outside world.
Another amazing video! I love your narration of the story so much! Your voice is relaxing and the storytelling is so detailed! I love how you even give context to what’s happening by briefly explaining events from the Journey To The West novel! This is some true compassion and dedication you put into these lore videos! Please continue to make more!
This chapter has the best story imo. You can never see the whole picture. Who is the villain? What really happened? Every piece of information we get is subjective, but fragments of the past told from a dozen fixed perspectives. Yet nothing can be considered a proof except the results, and thus we never get a definitive explaination of the full picture, of what really happened all those years ago. And funnily, while the popular explaination is that Lingji is the bad guy, we can also cook up a theory where Yellow Wind is less righteous than he seemed, Lingji not as much as a villain, and this theory would also not contradict anything given in the lore. We can only believe what we are led to believe- or rather, what we want to believe. And this theme corresponds perfectly with the 2nd relic. Absolutely amazing story here.
Wonderful video! Clearly you've put A LOT of love and effort into it, and the quality no doubt speaks to that!! Can't wait for part 3!! One small correction: The Father of Stone left not because he wanted to follow the evil Stone Guai, but because he wanted to bring a helpless and abused human girl back to life. You will meet him in Chapter 5, the Flaming Mountain. You can read his portrait after defeating him. It's quite sad. The Son of Stone set out to find his father at his mother's request, as she, being a mountain deity, is forbidden from leaving the mountain. However, instead of heading west to the Flaming Mountain, the son went east and ended up at Mt. Huaguo (Chapter 6). There, he became so mesmerized by the giant cricket that he just sat there and chilled, which is why when you light attach him, he merely swipes you away. And this is just my personal take: I think the Yellow Wind Sage was aspired to do good. Otherwise, he would have had no reason to help the king tame Fuban while merely passing by. But when he saw what Bodhisattva Lingji did to the entire nation-reducing everyone to rats out of spite, in mockery of their admiration for him, a yaoguai- he was shaken to the core, changed, and left Kingdom of Sahali in doubt of everything he believed before. Bodhisattva Lingji is a hypocrite. He was still lying to us, the destined one, even in the final cut scence.
indeed the giant one is this rock guai. In the Journey to the west its spoken that on the end of wukongs journey he met a giant foe that had prevailed compared to the others.
I think the Scottish accent was meant to make him sound more "country bumpkin" compared to the formal sounding british accents of the celestial court because he's missing his head
Highkey love his break down , I’ve watched a lot of other ones and a lot of them don’t cover the minor boss or side characters and not even by section so w mans
After beating the game and now watching this makes me appreciate the lore amd story being told even more i cant wait for the breakdown of ch 3 and 4 since those were my favorite chapters in the game
I just want to say I knew very little about journey to the west and sun wukong until playing this game but I thoroughly enjoy the depth and level of detail you explain each character and the lore surrounding them. I am eagerly waiti g for the following chapters
Thank you for doing this bandit I played and beat this game and I really didn't have a clue what was going on. The mini movies after you beat the chapters help a little bit but if you don't know the story of Wukong (which I didn't know a whole lot) your kind just lost and confused! Still great game and my 2nds favorite game behind rebirth
Nice one, thank you for the deep dive on this, it was very confusing when i played it. Also, on min 35:00 you can kill the younger rat son only and leave the rat king. That way you will get a bit of a gruesome scene later when you meet the imprisoned big son.
Man you are awesome, Your videos are really great and so in depth, I was very confused by who the boy is who leads destined one to mad tiger... Now it all makes sense i had no idea the boy akd tiger acolyte were father and son... Thanks for this videos i loved the Chapter 1 video as well.. No one has explained the story of each bosses in such depth....Please keep this videos coming
People digged out there is an unfinished area with scripture from Diamond Sutra on the wall, basically saying one shouldn't had obsession with reputation or something like that. And the tatoo on Lingji's arm indicates he failed that.
watching these videos encouraged me to read journey to the west. it’s a little difficult due to some things get lost in translation as some of the most beautiful sayings in chinese turns into pure gobbledygook when translated to english, but my heart and desire to know more pushes me to persevere… 💀
Thanks for these videos man. I’m a sucker for lore lol every time I encounter a new enemy I read the portraits, but sometimes the order I encounter everyone makes it feel like I’m putting together a puzzle 😂 it’s fun but confusing
i like how you mentioned one of the pilgrims being forgotten last video. and then called em a trio in this one . everyone forgets the horse is a dragon 😭
The fight between the destined one and FuBan is purely for the sake of storytelling, happened in a timeline where wukong is still alive. Also FuBan and Shigandang are Linji's mounts, both demolished by Yellow Wind Sage.
Duuuuude, I just want to thank you for these videos. So much. I'm a long time lover of Sun Wukong, but I only read JTTW in the last 5 years. And looking at a lot of the lore and discussion lately with Wukong, I'm realizing that the version I read must have skipped over a lot of major stuff. I fucking love lore. I can't play games myself due to several circumstances, so watching game walkthroughs is like I'm playing and learning a long with the RUclipsr. So when I finally caught up on the story, I immediately went to looking for the Wiki (which is unfortunately still incomplete) to read up on the lore. And as helpful as it was, it was a lot of information that led me down a rabbit hole. So your videos were ABSOLUTELY AMAZING in helping me understand not only the focus of Black Myth, but how it tied into the JTTW and Buddhism overall. 😭😭😭🫂🔥🔥🔥 Thank you so much for making these two videos, and I can wholeheartedly say you've earned yourself another subscriber. I just want to let you know that you've got another person here who is immensely grateful for what you've made, and is waiting eagerly for the next videos 🙏📿 Keep cooking, and make sure to stay hydrated 🐵💛💨
*EDIT: The part about the father and son of stones being Shigandang and the Stone Vanguard is incorrect*, they appear to be the evil guai and a strong guard. I’ll correct this in the next video!

Yep, Shaanxi region in China is equivalent to Scotland in UK
Reminds me of what they did for the character Osaka from Azumanga Daioh
Since that character turns out to be a Buddhisatva, do you know if the Chinese translation gives him more traditional accent?

Yes!!! Chapter 2 LET'S GO!!! Thank you, Bandit. Keep the Wukon videos coming!!
Chap 2 and 4 are probably my fave chapters. A lot of tragic and dark lore in those chapters
Need the lore for chapter 4 the whole hollow thing was cool asf
Wonderful video! Clearly you've put A LOT of love and effort into it, and the quality no doubt speaks to that!! Can't wait for part 3!!
One small correction:
The Father of Stone left not because he wanted to follow the evil Stone Guai, but because he wanted to bring a helpless and abused human girl back to life.
21:13 we do meet and fight the gigantic rock gui in chapter 6. I believe that's the one rock gui in question here
indeed the giant one is this rock guai. In the Journey to the west its spoken that on the end of wukongs journey he met a giant foe that had prevailed compared to the others.
Yeah that was the mini mini mini version
The only series on youtube worh the wait for
You smashed this again bandit, thank you
Here from AfroSenju's video. Amazing video and series. Looking forward to what comes next.
Such high quality vid! Cant wait for chapter 3!
Here to spread some love from AfroSenju. Love your vids, keep it up man
I think the Scottish accent was meant to make him sound more "country bumpkin" compared to the formal sounding british accents of the celestial court because he's missing his head
Im only subbing for the rest of the parts- this was wildly informative and entertaining.
Highkey love his break down , I’ve watched a lot of other ones and a lot of them don’t cover the minor boss or side characters and not even by section so w mans
Insane lore tbh. Good storytelling as well man, keep it up.
After beating the game and now watching this makes me appreciate the lore amd story being told even more i cant wait for the breakdown of ch 3 and 4 since those were my favorite chapters in the game
These videos have helped me understand and enjoy the game more. Thank you 😊 waiting on chapter 3 soon
Always looking forward to more. I really appreciate the depth in which you go of the previous stories and the current
Thoroughly enjoying these videos and the effort you're putting into them. Thank you! I absolutely love this story, glad they made this game.
I just want to say I knew very little about journey to the west and sun wukong until playing this game but I thoroughly enjoy the depth and level of detail you explain each character and the lore surrounding them. I am eagerly waiti g for the following chapters
I will definitly be watching all videos in this series 🙌
Definitely subscribing, these videos are very helpful to put the lore together. Thank you.
Here from Afro senjus channel showing some love. Awesome video bro!
You get a like and a subscribe no one is doing such quality explanations like you please finish them all
Nice one, thank you for the deep dive on this, it was very confusing when i played it.
Also, on min 35:00
you can kill the younger rat son only and leave the rat king.
Afro sent me, Amazing content and channel.
you know how loooong I've been waiting for thisss
People digged out there is an unfinished area with scripture from Diamond Sutra on the wall, basically saying one shouldn't had obsession with reputation or something like that. And the tatoo on Lingji's arm indicates he failed that.
Please keep making these I love them
Ah man can't wait for the next video for chap3!!
This whole world is just so interesting! I’m really enjoying this game and your videos!! Keep it up please! I wanna see more for other chapters
dannng..i didn't know the story is so deep..im amazed, just amazing 😮 🔥🔥🔥
I really appreciate these lore videos. I’m looking forward to the chapter 3 videos and beyond. Thank you for this!
Coming over from Afros video reacting to your video! You remind me a lot of Vidya with his Souls lore coverage, so I am always down for that!
watching these videos encouraged me to read journey to the west. it’s a little difficult due to some things get lost in translation as some of the most beautiful sayings in chinese turns into pure gobbledygook when translated to english, but my heart and desire to know more pushes me to persevere… 💀
Ngl man I been waiting all week for this
Thanks for these videos man. I’m a sucker for lore lol every time I encounter a new enemy I read the portraits, but sometimes the order I encounter everyone makes it feel like I’m putting together a puzzle 😂 it’s fun but confusing
Can totally tell that you put your heart and great effort in making this video, appreciate it
My god these videos are so good. Actual S-tier content my guy! Keep it up
The lore keeps getting better.
This Wukong stuff is gonna send this channel to 500k subs easy and well deserved.
sent here by Afro, and wasn't disappointed. nice intro too
I love these so much
So happy to see this video
Bro i love those Videos. Cant wait for the next parts
Thank you so much for this video!❤
Love this series keep up the amazing work!
Been waiting for this to drop yessir
i like how you mentioned one of the pilgrims being forgotten last video. and then called em a trio in this one . everyone forgets the horse is a dragon 😭
The fight between the destined one and FuBan is purely for the sake of storytelling, happened in a timeline where wukong is still alive.
Also FuBan and Shigandang are Linji's mounts, both demolished by Yellow Wind Sage.
Keep it up! this is way better than the ones who just do an AI Voiceover to a script. it feels so low effort.
Love from AfroSenju's channel ❤
Actually amazing for doing this seriously ✨
This is well explained. Can't wait to get to chapter 5 to know where did red boy come from
Keep these coming!
Take your time making videos the quality is appreciated
Dude this was great I can't wait for the chapter 3
Loving this series!
I JUST finished chapter 2 and here's your video! Impressive 😍
Been waiting for this, thanks
Another great video. I love how this game has got so many western people into the story of Wukong
Thank you so much for making these two videos, and I can wholeheartedly say you've earned yourself another subscriber.
I just want to let you know that you've got another person here who is immensely grateful for what you've made, and is waiting eagerly for the next videos 🙏📿
Keep cooking, and make sure to stay hydrated 🐵💛💨
