What You Don't Know About Drew Brees Quarterback Controversy With Philip Rivers

- Drew Brees started his career in San Diego in 2001 when he was a backup to Doug Flutie. After succeeding Flutie, Brees became the starting quarterback but only a couple seasons later, the Chargers drafted Philip Rivers who would compete with the Brees for the starting position. However a shoulder injury would put Drew's career in jeopardy and ultimately led him to New Orleans to join the Saints.

I applaud Marty for having Drew Brees back like that
I revered head coach Marty Shottenheimer. I always respected him being a head coach for struggling franchises and making them formidable.
They would have been a dynasty if they stick with both him and Shotty.
Marty just needed an aggressive D cordinator to keep him from going to his one flaw the prevent D
Marty is one of the best coaches ever. Sad that he didn’t win the big one.
A.J did a lot of people dirty. Marty was atleast going to take care of team.
Right.
Nobody talks about how the chargers drafted 2 hall of famers in back to back picks in the same draft.
And won 0 championship with it
@@ghislainlarocque4415 that’s chargers football baby!
@@hogndog2339 Marty was the best coach they ever had and they fired him. The year after he was fired the Chargers started going downhill. Marty’s problem is he always had bad luck in the playoffs.
I don’t think Rivers is HOF. I honestly think the NFL is just putting so much hype into the 2004 draft so they can close the gap between the 1983 draft as the greatest QB classes.
@@StrikeTeam0316 they’re talking about Brees
Thanks Chargers and Dolphins! What's funny is that Drew is undefeated against both the Chargers and Dolphins since he's became a Saint.
I'm a lifelong Lions fan. Even though I refuse to watch the games and haven't followed the team for years for obvious reasons. But when people say the lions are the Lions and they will never win, I immediately respond with New Orleans Saints. Get the right coach and the right quarterback and you can win. Look at The Saints. Drew Brees and Sean Payton completely turned that franchise around.
For the record Nick Saban wanted Drew Brees and the training staff would not pass him on his physical. The chargers just didn't want him, Saban wanted Brees and was furious when the training staff did not pass him for his physical.
Oh and one more thing I'm from Michigan obviously cuz of The Lions (FML) and I'm a die-hard Michigan fan I saw Drew Brees play at Purdue a lot because I'm in Big Ten country and anyone that watched Big Ten teams knew Brees was good before he even got to San Diego. I love Drew Brees. One of the greatest competitors I've ever seen.

I think it’s pretty ironic that Drew Brees and Phillip Rivers both retired in the same year
Yeah
Yet, both lead very different careers upon retiring. The chargers couldnt get anything done with the talented packed rosters
@@ryaj2356 yup which sucked because I wanted Seau Flute Gates and LT to get a ring!!
If the Chargers traded a young Phillip Rivers they would've gotten a haul in return and became a potentially dynastic franchise with Ladainian Tomlinson, Antonio Gates, and a great defense. At least 1 ring. Biggest mistake of their franchise looking back.
@@bryantdixon8918 it's hard to say that in the moment. A lot of players dont bounce back from injury and drew was injured as his contract expired. Rivers was still on a rookie contract and untested so teams may not have paid out as much for him, maybe a 1st rounder is all he would have gotten. Given rivers didnt do shit in the play offs and rarely made it there with all the talent that surrounded them, the chargers got little out of him for how much they paid him to win it all.
Love those old Charger uniforms. Wish they were still back in San Diego
San Diego always has talent. They just don't seem to know what to do with it.
The charges getting rid of Brees is way the charges should never win the super bowl they go of furture Hall of Famers in his prime
@@gregoryfuller9736 nah, his release was actually totally understandable at the time. I actually have the same shoulder injury as him and the outlook is pretty grim. Who could have predicted that'd he'd come back stronger than ever? He didn't reach his prime until he got to NO. Nobody saw that shit coming. Also, what luck that Rivers turned out to be the HOF qb he is. In the end it really did kinda work out for everybody, as he said. Chargers are pretty doomed tho, unless the ownership changes
@@conorobrien1025 yup! If I remember correctly, they thought shoulder injury would end his career as a QB! Definitely wouldn’t have thought Brees would be Brees!

Especially when Evans and Nicks were on their game.
Not mention prisoner Darren Sharper was just incredible at football but bad at life I guess.
Man you (Ain't) lying blame it on the coaching staff
I think this proves the NFL doesn't give young QBs enough time to develop
49ers gave Alex Smith alot of time to develop. Only for them to be done with him a season and a half after finally developing.
Many develop in 2 years. Clearly SD staff doesn't know how coz brees immediately clicked in NO
@@docsylva2876 I mean you have a point, the rules have changed, but QBs can still be tackled, there’s still pressure for the QB because if the line rushes them he can still get tackled for a loss of yards they’re just protecting the QB from getting absolutely obliterated in the pocket or tackled when he already threw the ball, it still takes skill, you’re still rushed for time, they just don’t have equipment that protects from the brutality that the sport used to have
But make no mistake, QBs still get their asses kicked today, especially the ones who like to rush like Robert griffin III or Michael Vick, they suffered many injuries leaving the pocket and getting ran over trying to run for that first down.
I don’t think that rule change is absolutely a terrible thing, although players do choose to take that risk themselves when they join up

I dont know what you're running for, but you've got my vote.
Cowher and Roethlisberger were given an opportunity to redeem themselves in 2005, after getting their asses kicked by New England in the 2004 AFC Championship game at home. I have no doubt that, following a 15-1 season that ended badly, Dean Spanos would have fired Cowher and replaced him with Norv Turner or someone else who had no business being a head coach. Especially since that was Cowher's fourth AFC Championship game loss at home. That's the difference between stable and unstable ownership. The Chargers are on their fourth head coach since firing Marty following the 2006 season. The Steelers have had three head coaches since 1969.

As bad as Norv was, Mike McCoy was even worse. Frank Reich was the ultimate scapegoat for McCoy, and he ended up winning the Super Bowl almost IMMEDIATELY after getting fired. Drew Brees = HOF Saint Charger
I agree. I made similar comments above. It was messy and the GM could have used the 1st round pick to trade for multiple players to make that team a multi-super bowl contender but didn't have the wisdom to see what he had in his possession.
Brees didn't throw temper tantrums or roll his eyes after a int. I seen him mad one time at Jeremy Shockey for blowing his cover and the two went on to pass for a touchdown in a super bowl. Manning and Brady have so much film of their emotions, and to be fair, it's understandable to get upset sometimes, but Brees read the same body language every down. "Going to move these damn chains to that endzone and get 6". No matter the situation. As emotional as it is to play football as a QB, to remain zoned in and stay professional is impressive.
Marty was one of the best coaches the Chargers organization has ever had. Loved watching his teams play growing up.
They drafted two hall of famers in one draft damn
Steelers drafted 4 HOFer's in one draft
Cowboys 3
Bears have drafted 2 in one draft twice
Buccaneers in 95 also 2 in one draft
As a chargers fan this is really heart breaking
Jeez I think you did ok with Rivers! Lol.
This is one of the main reasons I think players aren’t bust. It’s all about situation. Drew looked like bust until Sean got his hands on him.
Of course coaches are a BIG fuckin deal. Vince Lombardi the man that the Super Bowl trophy is named after the year before he went to Green Bay the team went 1-10-1 his first year the team went 7-5 and the year after that the team went 8-4 and went to the NFL championship pre Super Bowel era. And from that team in 1958 that had a record of 1-10-1 seven went on to become hall of famers.
I think with Brees, he showed glimpses of what he could be in 2004 and 2005. Situation also helps too. Payton got him on the right track and by 2008, Brees could’ve been the QB he turned into on just about any team imo.
I didn't realize how many years Brees played for the Chargers. I always thought it was 2or 3.
It was three bad years, one very good, and one average. If it had lasted beyond 2005 in San Diego no way he makes the Hall of Fame.
Only played 1 game his rookie year, had a average year for 2002 standards, bad year in 2003, amazing year for 2004 non Peyton Manning standards and played great in playoffs, unlike rivers, and a great year for 2005 non Peyton Manning standards and rules but had a bad December in 2005 but great overall year.

I recall ray lewis discussing this on Undisputed about how the game is totally different and defenses arent what they used to be.
Great video. I was a Marine living in San Diego when this happened. The Brees injury during a meaningless game rocked the city. Really well done video.
Thanks!
Baffles me til this day that as a Chargers fan, I could’ve been alive to enjoy a Lombardi or two with Brees as our qb. I don’t have anything against PR as a person but I never liked his game as qb for the Chargers. I hope I’m able to witness a championship for my Bolts with Herbert as qb sometime before I depart earth lol 🤙🏾 ⚡️⚡️⚡️
Chargers fucked up. Not so much on Drew Brees but firing Marty was the dumbest decision and they paid for it with 15 years of mediocre teams with a high level QB. (not great, possibly because he wasn’t surrounded by greatness)
only coach i can think of that got fired after going 14-2
Chargers have always been trash it definitely has a lot to do with the Owners. They’re beyond sad.
Clasher Sports Marty was a great coach but always got way too conservative in the payoffs. One team that comes to Mind was his KC that lost to the Colts 10-7 after a 13-3 season
Marty was a great coach. I'm a Chiefs fan from a boy that seen them win in 1969 SB. He came to KC and made us a winning team but just couldn't get us to the big dance. He was good for football and for me as a fan.
They didn't win the SB in'69,
They lost SB#1 TO THE PACKERS,they won SB5/6,
I can't remember which one,
R. I. P. COACH
Marty was a great man. Didn’t know he passed. Bless you sir. You will not be forgotten.
This is dope to see I'm from SD. Nice Jeru sample.
When the east is in the house! You're like the only person that ever commented on my intro.. such a dope 90s track!
@@ClasherSports yes it is. 👌🏾
I remember this song.. come clean... was bumpin everywhere in brooklyn back in the mid 90s
the first rap song I learned all the words too as a child. 😆🔥

@Stan Darsh "Come Clean" ruclips.net/video/4lVH8wkp6J4/видео.html the dirtiest beat from the 90s
RIP Marty Schottenheimer. He was Kansas City’s head coach when I first started getting into football and a Kansas City Chiefs fan.
As a life long Bolt fan I really hope Herbert can get us to a couple of Super Bowls to make up for the mess we had in the 2000s.
Nah I wouldn’t say that. Till 2004 maybe but after he got a near career injury in 05, two teams still were willing to give him a big contract
I couldn't imagine drew Brees never going to the saints and becoming a legend, coming from a Steelers fan I always had mad respect for brees
Great deep dive on this! It’s crazy how one hit can change an NFL career and a teams trajectory. Bledsoe takes that hit and Brady takes over and the Pats Dynasty begins. Brees takes this hit, which send him to the Saints and they win a Super Bowl. Wild.
This is why I don’t understand why some of these GMs have jobs. Even Archie Manning know it didn’t make since for the chargers to draft a QB.
Great video! Thanks
Glad you enjoyed! Make sure to turn on notifications for upcoming vids!
Thank you for the Marty Schottenheimer tribute 🙏
I'm a Denver fan, but I have so much respect for Marty as a person and coach
I loved Marty ball. He is one of my favorite head coaches and the chargers did him dirty
I felt bad when they let him go, we all know who won that war though.
I also feel bad for Marty, he had the Chargers going in the right direction and then they canned him.
New Orleans will be forever thankful for Drew Brees. He helped turn the Ain'ts back into the Saints. WHO DAT.
Fantastic work! Keep it up
A note on those play-off losses:
1. The first loss against the Pats, the team had a complete breakdown in the 4th quarter to lose the game. 2 game ending turnovers were given back for free: 1 called back because our CB taunted, other called back because Marlon McCree tried to be a hero and got stripped after intercepting brady. Then our kicker missed a 52 yard field goal to send it to OT. Also, we fumbled a punt, and dropped a pick in the 1st quarter.
2. They weren't just "injured", they each basically all had season ending injuries but kept playing anyway. Merrimen was also injured, Titans basically cheap shotted the entire team. Rivers played the game on a torn ACL, LT didn't just have a bruised knee, he had the same injury that sidelined AP for 5 weeks.
Overall though, you really nailed it. I can say as a former die hard chargers fan that fans generally sided with Marty and it was well known that AJ was not great to work with. So happy Brees got to win the big one, always liked him, he was adored in SD. Wish Rivers could have won one. He was good enough. Any chargers fan can you tell you though, in that era, no one knew how to lose like the chargers. They knew how to play just well enough to get you invested in the outcome of the game, and then found the most agonizing way to lose. They'd make a miraculous 4th quarter drive and then fumble on the 10 yard line. I'm sure every team has their stories though.
Outside of the '04 season, he looked pretty average and even in that one bright spot season, they couldn't even snag a playoff win against the worst AFC team. Guess he just needed a change of scenery and a weaker conference. Wasn't really like the Chargers made a bad decision letting him go. Rivers had an overall better SD career than Brees did. That being said, Brees had a better overall career than Rivers did, but that may never have happened if he stayed with the Chargers.
Lmao
If brees turned out as great as he was in NO, then he probably would’ve won a Super Bowl with gates and lt. But who knows if he could get past Brady in the AFC playoffs, which was the reason for many teams including chargers why they couldn’t get a ring
@@deagle7602 was never Brady the chargers needed to get by. It was the patriots defense. Both playoff games in the late 2000s Brady was trash.
2006 Divisional vs Chargers: 27/51, 280 yards, 2 TD, 3 INT, 57.6 rating Awful performance but THE PATS STILL WIN. Defense forces 4 turnovers, & even after Brady throws a (likely) game-losing INT, THE CHARGERS FUMBLE THE BALL BACK TO THE PATS ON THE SAME PLAY.
2007 AFCCG vs Chargers: 22/33, 209 yards, 2 TD, 3 INT, 66.4 rating Another awful performance but guess what... THE PATRIOTS WIN AGAIN. Defense allows only 12 points and carries Brady back to another Super Bowl.
Brees was great in playoffs that 04 year though. 05 was a great year also for 05 standards and rules. For today's easy rules it would be an average season, but back then Brees had a season worse than only Peyton Manning and Carson Palmer. Brady, Brees, and Hasselbeck were the notch below them.
The legendary "Martyball" style of coaching & play calling will be emulated 'til the end of time!
To not mention Drews shoulder separation in the last game of the year prior to the drafting of Philip Rivers is ridiculous.
There was seriously NOBODY in this town that thought he'd ever play again.
Kudos to New Orleans fir getting Drew. But at the time, they - and everyone else - knew it was a risk.
Drew came back from what could have been a career -ending injury. Congrats to him. Bad timing if he wanted to stay in SD.
Regardless, at no time was he mistreated in SD, unless
you regard getting benched because better things were hoped for . . .
That Drew took motivation from the Chargers "moving on" from him is undoubtable. He's always been vocal about that.
He was a fan favorite here. The players loved him. Ladanian especially loved him,
but the injury was regarded as massive at the time. To say it wasn't or to disregard its importance at the time is changing history.
Really enjoyed the tribute to Marty at the end. He may not of been this or been that, but the man was all heart. He lived with his heart on his sleeve. Being a KC rez during those years and after he has always been held highly in the community because of the person he was. Rest in peace MS. Nice job on the vid and keep at it!
It wasn't a bruised left knee for LT, he had a sprang left knee he couldn't cut like normal and with Turner the Burner it was more productive to use him than LT.
We’re going to miss drew brees
Thxs for your hard work making this video
thanks for noticing! this really did take a long time
