    Imagine having Joe Montana being your qb and Steve being the backup. That would be a great problem to have. While I agree that Joe was the goat before Brady came along, people take Young for granted, especially the 49er fans, they were too spoiled by the number of great players they had

      Steve Young was a great QB, I just think Joe Montana was better. I'm not even a 49ers fan, I'm a Saints fan. Steve Young was very good, he just couldn't dissect defenses as well as Joe Montana

    • @lk5388
      @lk5388 2 года назад +2

      Montana easily is the better qb, but he suffered a ton of damage over time. It was time for steve young to lead the 49er. In revisionist history, 49ers made the right call. Joe lasted 2 more seasons with the chiefs and 49er had a core to get back to the superbowl. If it wasn't for the dallas dynasty, the niners would have probably at least made the superbowl one more time.

    I believe if Steve would have shown he was a better passer or equally better passer as he was a runner, he would have been the starter in 1987 or 88. Steve was very inconsistent as a passer back then, and I believe Bill Walsh used that as the determining factor

    • @weegeemike
      @weegeemike Год назад +2

      I absolutely agree. It was extremely obvious that Steve wasn't on the same level as Montana when it came to throwing the ball in the small number of games he played in 87/88. However, Steve was certainly more athletic and more what they call "twitchy" when it came to improvising with running the ball. If Steve was a little farther along in his development as a passer, he would have been the obvious choice at quarterback from 87/88 onwards.
      But Joe is Joe, and was a master at passing the ball and being a leader of men. Much like Brady, Montana was never an impressive physical specimen, but it was the things you couldn't see that made him the great player he was.

      Steve Young needed to be a backup for the first couple years, he had potential, but needed to put it all together.

  • @rockabye_baby187
    @rockabye_baby187 3 года назад +21

    Love the music intro. To me, it wasn't the quarterbacks fault. Bill Walsh did that on purpose. They knew Joe time was running out as an elite QB. His body was breaking down. Joe won that last ring in '89. Steve Young only needed to wait until Joe would inevitably get hurt again and the team was his. That's how it played out. Tough for Joe being that it happened in the NFC Championship Game but that's football.

    I remember watching a video clip of Mike Holmgren telling Bill Walsh during the 1988 season that the 49ers would continue to struggle unless he picked either Montana or Young as the starting QB. Walsh choose Montana and they would go on to win 2 more Super Bowls. Young was very patient and a team player. If he wanted to, he could of demanded a trade and start on another team. But he choose to wait until Montana was traded in 1993 and Young became the permanent starter.

    • @mikeybarboza3086

      @@mikeybarboza3086 Young could of force the 49ers hand by demanding to start games or sit out the season. He was in position to negotiate since he played well. I suspect just like any other "reigning king"..........it is always the hardest thing to do to pass the torch. NOBODY worth their salt GLADLY hands over those reigns (especially in sports). The kings always want to decide for themselves when to go thru the exit doors. They NEVER want that decision made for them. On any other team with Steve Young on a roster, his entry would have been made much sooner, but when you have a legend like Joe Montana walking the hallways of the locker room, there is NO WAY Joe is going to gladly hand over the keys to the locker room. I suppose Walsh, Seifert, and the entire DeBartolo family handled all of this with as much grace and class as they possibly could without stepping into ego land mines along the way. They did the best they could.

  • @mroberts453

    People forget the 49ers we’re every bit as bad as the Bucs were when Montana became the QB. Yea Walsh showed up and they were more competitive, but they still lost. Montana turned them into a Dynasty just as Brady did for New England. The great ones can do that. Young went to Tampa and was so bad that he was labeled a bust. When he was traded to the 49ers he knew he landed in a sweet gig. Yea young was bigger, stronger, and faster than Joe but almost every QB in the league was bigger, faster, and stronger than Joe was. Steve Young had several chances to leave after San Fran traded for him. Joe was winning Superbowls while Steve was holding a clipboard. However, Steve never left lol. He knew, he knew the cake was already in the oven. He didn’t have to create anything, just steer the ship that has already been created, a winning culture that he didn’t have to build, it was already in place. Sorry bruh, The 49ers will always be known as the house Joe, Jerry, and Ronnie Lott built. This is coming from a Saints fan who had to watch my team deal with these two forever. We respected Steve, but Joe….we as the entire League feared this dude. He gave you nightmares.

      Montana was better than young because his legacy was in the playoffs. He got better as the pressure built.....but looking at Steve's stats in the regular season he was the most efficient qb of all time when compared to his Era. He only had 8 full seasons with the 49ers that qualify him in league leaders. In 8 years he led the league in tds 4 times....comp pct 5 times....avg yds per pass 5 times....NFL qb rating leader 6 times.....and 2 nfl mvps. No qb in the history of the game lead the league that many times in an 8 year period....he just couldn't keep up those performances in the playoffs where as joe played his best in the playoffs and superbowls.

    Unpopular Opinion: I personally think Steve was better than most ( non-49er fans ) think he was. This video along with his career clearly states what I've been saying for years now... Young was better than Montana. Of course we all love Joe, he brought Super Bowls to the Bay, but let's be honest with ourselves. Not only did Young face stiffer competition, had 49er teams with slightly less talent than Joe, but just look at the stats.

      Your context is extremely lacking. Montana came to a team that was piss poor and had to build a winner from the ground up. The PreRice teams were loaded om defense, but their offense although good, didnt compare to the post 86 offensive talent. While Steve Young stepped into a loaded 4 time SB winning team in a pre salary cap era. Huge advantage. Competittion?? Young's comp was probably more top heavy(Cowboys, Packers), but Montana' s comp was deeper. Giants, Redskins, Bears hell even the Saints. Young underachieved continuously. He walked in with Rice, Taylor and Watters and couldnt play well vs Dallas until they literally broke the bank to get one measly title. Young had a litany of great players to win after the Cowboys collapsed. Bryant Young, Dana Stubblefield, TO, Garrison Hearst, Rice, Merton Hanks but he couldnt get the job done.

    • @poizie85g83
      @poizie85g83 3 года назад +1

      @@aaronjackson9385 Bill Walsh and Edward DeBartolo Jr. had more impact on building that team to be a winner then Montana. Compare Young's last season in Tampa to his first season with 49ers and you will see how much impact Walsh's system had on QB's. Not trying to take anything away from Montana, but you can't over look other factors.
      When Young lost to Dallas in the playoffs it's true he wasn't that great, but the defense also gave up 30 points and 38 points.
      Montana never won a playoff game in his career where the defense gave up more then 27 points.
      I also wouldn't put Saints in there while comparing competition, Saints were good the last 2 years Montana was QB and the first 2 years Young was QB. It's a wash.

      @aaronjackson9385 3 года назад +3

      @@poizie85g83 of course the Niners were a first class organization with elite coaching. I never disputed that. But the fact of the matter is, Montana came to a poor team.and his greatness was a major factor in their ascent to greatness, while Young came to a ready made championship level squad and comparatively he did a lot less. Ownership is only as great as its players. Name an owner that was praised extensively that didnt field a good team?? Ownership is a results business. I cant turn on film and watch an owner perform like I can a Walter Payton or Barry Sanders and marvel at their greatness despite having some talent starved teams at times.
