I was born in 1977 and grew up a rabid Northern California niner fan. Joe Montana was a living legend. As a young boy I HATED that he was replaced with Steve Young. I still believe Seifert and Young just rode on the coattails of Montana. It was weird watching him as a Chief but I loved him so I loved the chiefs. I rooted for them in the afc championship game but unfortunately he couldn’t pull it off. I refused to call Brady the goat even after he won 5, but I eventually had to acknowledge it. It helps that Brady is from my generation and also northern Cali and probably felt the same way about Montana that I did.

Not a big autograph person, don’t need them, never ask for them. But I grew up in Sonoma County, CA. And I only rooted for one team as a little tyke. SF. So when my dad did a conference in the same hotel as Mr.Montana, he went over during a break and got me a 8x10 of ”Cool Joe” in a business suit, signed. He misspelled my name, and to this day I DONT CARE. It’s bloody Joe Montana! Who am I to complain?!
Such a smooth operator behind center. I honestly respected his choice to keep playing in KC. And to stay away from the press box after he played. He didn’t need the money, he deserved a private life. And in his words, “Who wants to hear from some old guy…” But it’s nice to hear his viewpoint now, glad he’s decided to share. Just an easy Legend, who’s as easy to root for now as he was over 30 years ago. Nice segment guys, thank you!

    49ers SB LVIII game plan:
On defense, 49ers need to put a linebacker on Kelce near the line of scrimmage to bump-and-run him on every play, to keep him off-balance, then double team Kelce to neutralize him.
On offense, if Chiefs load the box to prevent CMC from running, implement play-action pass for Brock who will torch them in the passing game.

“We had the lead when I left the game.” Yeah, and Roger Craig fumbled the football. Could have been to sabotage Steve Young’s chances of leading team to Super Bowl. That fumble has always seemed odd to me. He coughed it up a little too easily in my opinion. Just watched replay of that drive and yeah, my suspicions have been confirmed. Craig fumbles the first carry of the drive and 49er teammate dove on it. Any accomplished and experienced vet would remember after the first fumble: “number one priority is hold on to the football; don’t fumble.” Then he fumbles a couple plays later? And the ball wasn’t stripped either time. Sabotage.
Joe Montana was 4-0 in Super Bowl, finished career with a 92.3 passer rating which was significantly higher than other QB’s of that era except for Steve Young who finished his career with a 96.8 passer rating. Can’t say I’d take Steve Young over Montana because Montana led the 49ers to be the team of the decade. But Montana never had to face Jimmy Johnson’s Cowboys, and without Jimmy Johnson’s Cowboys, Young has four rings. I dunno, he didn’t get the opportunity to be a franchise QB until 6-7 years into his career but watch Steve Young highlights from 1992-1995, when he won two MVPs and threw 6 TD in Super Bowl. Nobody has played the position at a higher level. Staying healthy/availability take him out of most GOAT conversations but a 96.8 passer rating in that era is equivalent to 115-120 in today’s era.

Time might have blunted memories, but Joe Montana will forever be the GOAT. Brady is the greatest field general of an NFL team I have ever seen (matched in greatness only by longevity), but Montana was simply touched by God...end of story. You can't even describe exactly why Joe was great; you just watched him play & it just seemed superhuman. Elway, Marino, and so many others of that era were great, but Joe just had the extra something that was borderline spooky. It is a shame they banged him up as much as they did; he could have played so many more years.

Not an accurate comment. He was much more than a game manager. You were never out of a game with Montana at the helm. He led some memorable 4th quarter comebacks. Game managers don't do that consistently. He also put up remarkable numbers for his time; he led the league in virtually every category for the 80s as a whole; and was about second to Marino in stats per season. A little more than just a game manager.

I didn’t mean it as a knock, he had a great football IQ too. One of the all time greats

I saw Joe shed some tears in the locker room after a loss. Heart felt, not cry baby. “ Show me a good loser and I’ll show you a loser”.

Montana was my favorite quarterback even always being a Chiefs fan. Of course Mahomes is now but you can love a quarterback and be a fan of another team. He was the best.

When we called Alex Smith a game manager it was a positive thing and it was a change of direction in his career. From bust to playoff winning game manager.
With Purdy we've seen so much excellence. He was immediately better than Jimmy G. So people take exception to the label because he has been that good.
