I ran into him at A&M several times, but once in the spring before he left for the draft. It sticks with me because it was in a stair case alone. I never used the elevator and never saw anyone in the staircase. He was in there heading down from the advisors office (probably wrapping up whatever admin stuff was left at A&M) and he clearly just wanted to be left alone. He was in the staircase to avoid people. We made eye contact and I could tell he was dreading me talking to him, so I just nodded and passed by. Dude looked worn out already and he was only 21 years old. The celebrity status he had at A&M was unheard of and unhealthy for his situation. Every other time I saw him was at a bar or restaurant, but mostly bar. Most times he was still under 21 and his entire posse would swarm around him so he could take shots without anyone being able to get pictures. A picture of him drinking at that time would’ve been viral and on ESPN within minutes.

31 and I don’t get partying in a club or rave environment. Didn’t get it during undergrad and certainly didn’t during my MBA. I sound like a lameo (and yeah I am) but the appeal of getting so blasted you don’t know what’s up or down doesn’t really make a lot of sense. I get other kinds of drugs that involves self exploration or relaxation but those usually aren’t addictive drugs and can easily be switched off.
Doing something that gets you hooked for life without intervention just to have ‘a lot of fun’ that you may not even remember next day seems like a bad way to have fun. Means that what you’re doing wouldn’t be much fun sober.

As someone who went to A&M (and attended a season's worth of Johnny home football games as a student), I have a different take on the Cleveland thing. Johnny liked being the superstar, and that's a lot easier to do in college. I think he saw Cleveland as a place where he'd be the alpha right from the start, and then he'd ride in on his white (powdered) horse and save the franchise and the city. You don't get drafted by, say, the Tom Brady era Patriots or early Cam Newton Panthers and expect to sit at the big boy's table right away. At Cleveland, he legit thought he could save the franchise through talent alone as soon as he got there. But as you said, the modern NFL doesn't work like that. I hope he continues the good fight against his addiction and mental health issues.

It’s not about being a scrambler, it’s about basically who you think of when you remember Playing football as a kid. Visually there are better picks, accolade wise there are better picks, stat wise there are better picks, and I think as an all around pick Baker (has the accolades, the visual style, and the superior stats) is easily a better pick than Manziel. Lamar Jackson is easily the best pick though. He had the style and speed of Vick and could run like Braxton but better and could throw bombs down the field. I just watched this all the way through and the similarities that Johnny's life has to mine are shocking. Although I come from nothing, but addiction beat me down for years. Now I find myself clean and writing some of the best music I have in my life, not caring who or how many people see. It's honestly such a more healthy life, and I still have cravings almost everyday, but you learn to work through. I pray for anybody watching this who also struggles, and I'm glad Johnny was able to turn his life around. The spotlight ain't all its cracked up to be.

I don’t know, if a hiesman winning qb was texting me as an owner I might have done it too. He seemed like he really wanted to be there. I know it went the way it went, but had it gone the complete opposite and Johnny had actually turned the browns around we could be looking at the text and saying “look how hungry this guy was to turn things around there, that’s awesome.” Hindsight is always 20/20 for sure. Johnny doesn’t need the money, he never did. I hope he works on staying healthy and clean and if he enjoys playing some fun football league then that’s awesome for him. He wasn’t an nfl qb, he was a bust, he threw his nfl career away, whatever you want to say. But in the end I hope he finds happiness and contentment and stays away from drugs and alcohol. Who knows, I’m the future he could be speaking to rookies coming into the nfl about what to avoid and he could have just as big an impact doing something like that as any QB ever could in the nfl, he could help save some kids on the edge of falling down the hole he did
