- Blender 2.9 Animation Dogfight of Second World War soviet fighter aircraft.
✅ THE ARTWORK: www.artstation...
This short CGI film tells the story of the Normandie Niemen regiment, an air squadron of the French air force that fought Germany during the second world war on the eastern front from 1942 to 1945.
Here is a one short film I rendered inspired by the Normandie Niemen stories. I was learning and getting myself up to date for the new 2.9 version of blender and decide to create a 3d CGI animation of this fighter squadron.
➡️ The workflow:
- Assets modeled and animated on Blender 2.90 Alpha
Some free and paid assets are from Blendswap, CgTrader, Turbosquid... Thanks to the artists who share their work online.
- Assets textured on Subtance Painter. Full PBR Textures, on all assets.
- Assets rigged in Blender 2.9
- Characters: the base mesh comes from Adobe Fuse. Animation are from Mixamo, skining done in blender.
- FX Simulation on Blender 2.9 Mantaflow
- Render with Blender 2.9 Cycles & NVIDIA OptiX Ray Tracing on a RTX 2080TI
400 samples for the interior shots
200 samples for the outdoor shots
Render times: 119h in total
- Post-production and compositing on After Effects 2020
Thanks for watching!

This is beautiful. It is people like you who display what blender is capable of.
Yes, I am trying to get to this level of animation but it will take at least 5 years lol
And then there's people like me who see this and realise how very little i know about blender
@@marcusolivieri7374 oh hell yeah, I will have to get like 3 2070 supers to get much done in a reasonable amount of time, especially if I use cycles....
Too bad the artists often lack understanding how airplanes behave and it shows in the animations. For example in this animation the scene with planes taking off below moving at the exact same speed like the ones cruising above is not realistic at all.
@@dingdong2103 Homey, I have no idea what you're talking about.
Its greate to see what people can do with the Blender software. The modeling and camera work are an A+ Hope you continue to share your work. Thank you.
Me: This is sick! Let me try to make something like this!
Also Me: Haven't finish the donut that I start making half a year ago
same lol
Did you finish donut now after 2 years?😂
@@AntonioMedvidovic-wm1uq haha not yet🤣🤣🤣
did ya finish it now?
@@soggypieceofwetbread still not yet🤣
Not only is the modeling, texturing, and animation fantastic... The choice of camera angles, frame composition, and subtle camera shake really bring this scene to a different level. And if we look at the details, the attention paid to the convoy of trucks and tanks near the end is seriously impressive. Easily could've left this as a blank road, but you went the extra mile. Simply astounding
Everything can be taken care of if you have a god level pc
First of all as a blender user myself, I really have to say that your videos are some of the best out there, especially when it comes to compositing. Do you have any tips regarding camera movement because I simply do not achieve this natural movement of the camera in my projects?
@@julienvfx Thank you.
Bro my pc would've fried itself if I tried to render that, cant even imagine how long that would take
He probly hosted it so he didn't have to render it on his own pc
@@MrFantom_ I never thought of that, that's smart.
@@sleetler1427 It's not even that expensive. If you have a bad PC and you really want to render something good you could do the same.
He prob used a renderfarm
@@revcus7437 Yeah, that's what I said...
Stunning work!!! This is amazing!!! Well done!
@Ryan King Art, what?? I didn't know you liked this video too! Are you from BlenderNation too?
Hello @@ExpertManOfficial . Yes I post my stuff on Blender Nation as well.
@@RyanKingArt thanks for answer!
0:58 seconds video.... 48 hours rendering
Wow, do more ww2 birds please.
@@julienvfx thanks, subscribed.
Very good job 👍👍😀
This is hands down the best Blender animation I have ever seen. The amount of detail put into every model, the noises, just everything is perfect. Those planes look like they were dragged from real life into a computer. The movement is realistic, and the crowd at the end is the cherry on top. Bravo!
I'm just a child and I'm already learning blender I hope I will be able to make animations like these
How's it going?
WOW Is this done 100% in Blender or there is another 3d software used in this video
Modeled, rigged, animated in Blender
Textured in Substance Painter
Post-production on After effects
Thanks for watching, Yes, all 3d animations are made in Blender. However, I add some graphics elements in post-production with After Effects (like fog, flares....)
@@julienvfx incredible work
Did u rendered this in blender cycles?
It's because of people like you that create amazing 3D works of art and is the reason I began using Blender in hopes of achieving such great works. I look forward to any/all of your tutorials.
Holy shit man!!!! This is too much amazing work! I mean, too much! Please, be less amazing then this!
amazing work!
a question:
how did you go about making the field in 0:44? is it just an image texture mapped on a plane?
or is it actual geometry?
same goes for the distant field in 0:32! its so realistic! is it a texture, or actual scattered geometry?
Fuck, I love your short films, I never get tired of watching them over and over again. Hopefully we'll see the movie, one day. 👏👏👏
Wow, awesome work! 😍
very realistic great. but his voice should have been a little louder
I'm confused How to put background sky Maybe someone can teach me here
Fuck man....Just how could you render so many people ...tho loved the output very much
00:04 --- "A group of french pilots continue the fight alongside the russian people .
They form the "NORMANDIE-NIEMEN" squadron."
I know russians...
Because i'm russian...
So, i thinking, you know russians too, yes? Or where did you get information about them?
@@julienvfx thanks for answer!
Can you please give the tutorial for this video
The best
Holy crap. You are seriously under subscribed.
AMAZING WORK!!! LOVE IT!! Also, can you do a tutorial/s to make something similar?
Awsome work. What kind of asset manager do you use and how many of the models are self made.
Worth time rendering 119hours
Bro this is the single work or group work
Яки Нормандии-Неман
World of Warplanes vibes.
I love this Spitfire or hurricane scene
Or YAK idk if i guessed it it but this is amazing!

This is absolutely incredible!
woow independetvfx hello
These animations are stunning. I'm curious, how long do they take you to make on average?
wow absolutely amazing
HolyShit!
Realistic!
Amazing!
Amazing. One man army 💪🏻
this is amazing
Beautiful work! I have a question (well not just one :D) How did you manage to render that much grass and vegetation, and trees, I made a realy simple scene just for testing and I had LOD 2 Poly haven grass scatered on a 50 by 50 meter plane and 9 trees and 2 tanks and I couldn't swich to rendered view cus my blender just crashed and it said one time that I ran out of gpu memory? (I have an RTX 3060 and AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 6 core processor, 32gb memory) Also I want to make a scene with a tank just going fast on a field and I want to have like dirt dust effect comming from the tracks, can you give me advice on how to do it? Thanks and again FIRE ANIMATION !!🔥🔥🔥👊
There is still time for us to collaborate I start my new WW2 epic in Feb still in pre production ATM if u could "lend" me any of your shots I would be in your debt mon ami
good!
Amazing, truly cinema grade quality work!
@@julienvfx
Cool, i think alot of ppl will be happy for a tutorial on it.
IMP Q -
can i get similar results with dual core intel 6th gen i3 core, 2gb GPU, 8gb DDR3 ? answer ASAP
500 Hours of rendering time? Sheesh!!
Can I just ask one thing?
PLEASE TEACH ME EVERYTHING YOU KNOW!
Me calculating how mitch time out will take me to make this on my i3 7020u and 4 GB Ram
0:26 I would have left out this scene where the rudders go back and fourth, the Russian pilots wouldn't have done that during the war, but other than that fantastic job, 10/10
Let me guess....even in their cockpits, they had sunburned armpits ??
This is just incredible!! Amazing work! Could you please tell us one thing: how do you make the grass seen from large distance like in 0:24? Are these grass clumps or texture with bumps? It looks so realistic! Would you give us some clue how to make such grass? Thank you very much!
If it wasn't for the shot at 0:15 I would've been left trying to figure out if this was really CGI or actual video footage 😅
just took a look at the wireframes its awesome man... do you have a short making of....
Just amazing...
Спасибо! Merci! Très agréable! Bonne chance! Et merci pour Saint-Exupéry et Alexandre Dumas aussi! )
Really love the lens flares and other elements. The depth and motion in that last shot is killer! Great work, Julien!
it is so great but ı wonder how can ı do this can you make a tutorial video? btw ı know how can ı use blender but the background voices and making the animation ı just want the learn progress its kinda hard for me
this is the coolest animation i have ever seen made in blender, i really want to see more of this, especially with ww2 aircraft
Ah Soviet MiGs. Congratulations bro,

This is really nice! I’m working on a WWII film. Are you available to do CGI work for a film?
Highly appreciate the clear and orderly info you provided about the workflow. Thank you very much! :)
Thats awesome man.. 😲
Man this verry EPIC keep it up
This would probably take me 4 years to make and another 4 to render
Nice work, mate!
Recently made a similar video, but in worse quality (because AMD Athlon X4 860K & GTX960)
WOOW! Thank you very much! Haven't heard of this before! ♥
